Where people use brown paper bags instead of plastic bags when they purchase items from the supermarkets or groceries. Also, detergents or other cleanings stuffs are mostly made up of organic ingredients instead of harsh chemicals that destroys the environment. I’m not sure is there is a strong demand nowadays of biodegradable detergents as per the article I read in a magazine but I think the reason perhaps is the awareness of people on the global warming and protecting the environment.

And with respect to the cleaning power of the biodegradable detergent soap versus the commercial detergent soap, it is also said that it is comparable and with other benefits like being mild to the skin and clothes. But if you ask me, I’ll choose the biodegradable detergent so we can protect the environment because this planet is not like a piece of clothing that you can throw away when old and ragged. Mother earth is only one and cannot be replaced.

So how can we make the biodegradable soap? below is the procedure I got from entrepreneur magazine which I think will be helpful to you if want to start a business or let say just wanted to make your own home made detergent soap.

Ingredients:

1 Kilo Sodium Sulfate
500 grams Magic Ultra (coconut-based)
200 grams coconut powder
6 ml bilimbi fruit (kamias) extract
10 grams blue speckles
120ml fragrance (kalamansi scent)
5 grams sodiumtripolyphosphate (STPP)

Most of the mentioned ingredients are imported from China, Malaysia and India but you can also buy them locally in soap supplies in Divisoria. You can also produce kamias extract at home by fermenting 1 kilo of kamias fruit in a jar with 2 tablespoons of salt. After 24 hours get the extrac and strain it then transfer to a clean container.

Procedure:

The first step in making the soap is by measuring up all the ingredients as per the above list and put each in individual container for convenience so all you have to do is pour each one and mix.

Prepare a mixing bowl large enough to accomadate all the ingredients. Mix first the sodium sulfate, magic ultra which serves as a foaming agent to the detergent and coconut powder until it becomes powdery.

Then add to the mix the STPP along with the kamias extract and kalamansi fragrance. Mix again, then add the blue speckles which serves as the bleaching agent. Once you thoroughly mixed all the ingredients, it is done and you can pack them and label them if you want.

Where to get the supplies:
ESF Cake and Bread House
2/F Emer Bldg., 13 Rizal Avenue Extension, Kalookan City
Landline: (02) 948-6112
Mobile: 0902-6566943

I know that this is not new and have been around a few years back. If you can use your cellphone to surf the internet, you can also use it to surf using your computer by plugging the USB data cable of your cellphone to your PC or use bluetooth if your cellphone is capable but some PC don’t a bluetooth device and you have to buy it and attach/configure it to your PC. Whichever you prefer, what is important is for your computer to have access on your cellphone. Even though I know that this can be done years back I didn’t bother to do it myself because I have no need for it, that’s because I’m using a landline from dial-up (before) to dsl (now) and I always think that those people who are always on-the-go are the only ones who really need it. But there are times that you need a back up if ever you loose a phone line connection, going out of town or if you are relocating. Relocating your land line will take some time so at least you need this kind of a internet connection using cellphone GPRS or 3G capability. It works either on a prepaid sim or a post paid sim.

You can also purchase a USB dongle from Smart or Globe telecom. The USB dongle from Smart is <a href="http://smart.com.ph/smartbro/"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Smartbro ( prepaid or postpaid ) and from Globe is <a href="http://www1.globe.com.ph/feature.aspx?artid=98"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Visibility ( prepaid or postpaid ). But it requires you to buy the dongle for Php4,500. If you have a cellphone with a GPRS/3G, then why bother to buy the dongle? All you need to do is to configure and activate your handset then there you go! So how to activate it? it depends on the network provider. There are different configuration depending on the network provider. You can configure it manually or you can just text them or call their customer support to send you the configuration setting then save it on your cellphone. In my experience, the second one is better because it eliminates the frustrations and headaches.

When I was in the process of configuring my cellphone, even though my manual configuration is correct, I can’t make it work. I even went to the Smart customer support in SM and told me that my configuration is correct but my cellphone is incompatible. Then unexpectedly when I went back home my cellphone received a configuration setting then I saved it then it worked! what a relief. The same thing with Globe, not until I called their customer support and ask them to send me the configuration setting for my mobile phone to work properly. Maybe it depends on the cellphone model and brand and it might work on you if you configure it manually. If you want to know more about configuration, <a href="http://mobile.tipidpc.com/viewtopic.php?tid=1677"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">click here.

Basically, all you have to do to configure your phone is:

For Smart:

Step 1: If you are using a 3G handset, go to Tools > Settings > Network Mode > select Dual Mode. If your phone is only GPRS then skip this.

Step 2: Activate your handset by texting Set 3G and send to 211(for 3G hanset) or SET GPRS to 211 (for GPRS only) .

Step 3: Save Settings sent by 3401. Key in 1234 if prompted.

Example: If you have a Samsung SGH-X640, that’s “SET GPRS SAMX640”

To download Smart MMS phone settings:

Key in SET MMS and send to 211.

To download SMART 3G phone settings:

Key in SET 3G<phone model> and send to 211.

If you don’t know the abbrevation of your phone model, key in SET LIST and send to 211. If you can’t receive their configuration setting for days, then call the customer support and ask them to send it to you.

For Globe:

You just have to call the customer service 211 and let them activate it and ask them to send the GPRS or 3G setting on your phone. This will save you time and hassles on setting up your phone. Even if you manually configure it, in my experience, your phone will still not function properly. But just in case you want to know more about manual configuration, just visit the site <a href="http://customerservice.globe.com.ph/bmw/csportal/user/portal-user.jsp?sid=371"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here.

Configuring your PC

Now we will go to the tricky part, configuring your computer to hook it in your mobile phone. At first I thought a GPRS or 3G modem is a separate device you have to purchase and install in your computer. But when I made some research, your mobile phone is actually the modem itself. You just need to install a GPRS or 3G modem driver to your computer depending on the type and model of your cellphone and use your USB data cable. The USB data cable usually comes along when you purchase a mobile phone together with a CD containing a PC suite for you to access your phone in uploading or downloading pictures, ringtone or messages. But if ever you don’t have one, you can purchase it in some cellphone store or buy it in ebay if you are having a hard time finding the data cable for your mobile phone.

If you have already installed a PC suite in your computer, I assume that the modem driver is already there and all you have to do is to configure your computer to activate the modem driver. But in case you don’t have a PC suite software or modem driver, I found a site that I research for you. Just go to this site <a href="http://www.nodevice.com/"rel="nofollow" target="_blank">NoDevice.Com. Search for the modem driver by typing your cellphone model and download. If you can’t find the modem driver, just look for a PC suite and install it and probably the modem driver is already included with the installation package.

Now, before you start configuring your modem, you should first make sure that the com (communication) port is available (e.g. com1, com2, com3). First plug the USB data cable in the PC USB port.

Go to Start>Control Panel>Add Hardware

Click “Next” button and select “Yes. I have already connected the hardware” then click “Next”

Select “Add a new hardware device” and click “Next” then the wizard will search for the device (which is the data cable) and will assign a com port.

How to Configure Modem

So after you installed the driver or the PC suite(for Windows XP users):

Go to Start>Control Panel>Phone and Modem Option>Modem.

Click the “Add” button and click the tick box that says “Don’t detect my modem:I will select it from the list” and click the “Next” button.

Then you will see a list of modem on the left side on the “Manufacturer” column and select the kind of modem you prefer. for example, if your mobile phone is Samsung, select it then the “Next” button.

After that, select the port for your modem. It is the port assigned to the USB data cable which is either com1,com2 or com4.

Then click the “next” button again and it will automatically create the modem for you. Afterward, click “finish” and thats it!

Create a Connection

It will be better if you have a software like a Easy GPRS which is only for Samsung brand handset but maybe there are also other kinds of software available for other handset like Nokia or Motorolla. But just in case you don’t have one and wanted it to be simple, then you can create a connection similar to a dial-up connection. To do this:

Go to Start>Control Panel>Network Connections>Create a New Connection. (again this is for windows xp users)

A new connection wizard will show. Click “Next” button and select “Connect to the Internet” radio button and click “Next” again.

Then select “Set-up My Connection Manually” again click “Next” and select “Connect Using a Dial-Up Modem”.

Click the “Next” button and select a device by clicking the check box. If you see some device that have a check on it, unselect it and choose the GPRS or 3G modem appropriate for your handset.

Click “Next” again the type a name or invent any name for your short cut dial up icon. Click “Next” again and the window that you will see will prompt you for a dial up number. This is tricky if you don’t have an idea what to put in it. At first I thought I’ll put my cell number in it. But it is simple as *99**1*1#

Again click the never ending “Next” button and a window will prompt you for a username and password. Leave it blank and click “Next”.

Then click “Finish” and your done!

That wasn’t too hard isn’t it?

I think everyone knows this vegetable. This is commonly added to a dish called chop suey where it is mixed with vegetables like cauliflower, chinese cabbage, cabbage, bell pepper, sayote, carrots and added with squid and some chicken meat or pork.I guess there is a good income opportunity in producing baby corn because I don’t see it often in the wet market or in a supermarket so there is a possibility that producers were seldom also. So if you want to know something about producing baby corn, below is a guide I found in Bureau of Plant Industry website.

Young cob corn (Zea mays L.), the newly developed corn, has been used by Chinese as vegetable for generations and this practice has spread to other Asian countries. It is used as ingredient in most food preparations. It has nutritive value similar to that of non-legume vegetable such as cauliflower, tomato, cucumber and cabbage (Yodpetch and Bautista, 1983). This vegetable has a great potential for cooking purposes and for processing as a canned product. Canned cob corn export to Thailand, Japan and Europe is increasing and has a good future.

Generally, corns farmers strive their competitive position by improving yields and cutting costs of production, for instance, through shortening cultural risks by harvesting for either green corn or baby corn. Young cob corn has a short growth thus a farmer can grow four or more crops a year. It has a wide range of adaptation and does not need intensive cultivation. Pollination is also not a problem because young cob corn is harvested before kernels are developed. Considering these factors, young cob corn has good potentials.

Varieties

Sweet corn varieties are commonly used for the production of baby corn. In some areas of the country, Pioneer 305 and SMC (hybrid) varieties are being commercially grown for young corn. Golden Cross Bantam and Supersweet were also found to possess the best attribute of young cob corn. (Yodpetch and Bautista, 1983). IPB Var 1, IPB Var 2, IES Cn 1, IES Var 2 and Supersweet corn # 33 were also proven to be suitable for young corn production (Masana et al., 1990).

Soil and Climatic Requirements

The best soil for corn is a well-drained with a texture of silt loam or loam type. It should be a type of a soil with a high moisture holding capacity, high amount of organic matter and be slightly acidic (pH 5.3 to 7.3). A rainfall of 200 to 1,500 mm is required in its growing period. However, the optimum requirement of corn is 400 to 600 mm per growing period. In time of moisture deficiency, irrigation is essential.

Land Preparations

A seedbed which is deep, well pulverized yet fairly compact is excellent for corn.

A clayey and weedy field requires more plowing. In a field where trash is plowed under, a second or third operation may be needed to obtain a clean seedbed.

Plowing is done when the field is at the right moisture, when the soil particles 13 cm. below the ground separate, only a thin portion sticks to the finger but no ball is formed.

For animal-drawn plow, a depth of 4 to 7 cm is sufficient. When tractor is used, 12 to 14 cm is preferable.

Harrowing is done at the time the soil has the right moisture content. It is done again within two days before planting to level the soil.

Planting Method

1. Surface or Flat-bed Planting

Seeds are drilled or hill-planted on a level to slightly rolling topography at a desired depth and row spacing. It is suited for areas with abundant precipitation and heavy soil types.

2. Listed Planting

Seeds are placed at the bottom of the V-shaped furrow. A lister, which is double moldboard blade, is used for opening furrow of this kind. It is practiced in areas where rainfall is a limiting factor, where soil drainage is good and the soil is friable.

3. Ridged Planting

The seeds are placed to a specific depth on top of the ridge. The conditions described in listed planting are also appropriate for this type.

If the soil contains considerable moisture at planting time, the seed should be planted from 2 to 5 cm. deep. On the dry, soil the seeds should be planted 5 to 8 cm. deep.

Rate of Seeding

The amount of seeds needed in a hectare to have a population density of 80,000 to 100,000 plants/hectare is 27 to 30 kg of hybrid seeds. The rows are spaced 100 cm with a hill spacing of 25 cm with 3 plants/hill or drilled 25 cm between hills. No thinning on corn seedlings will be done.

Irrigation

The field should be irrigated moderately even at the time of seed germination and during the early growth and development of corn plants. Weekly irrigation must be done especially during summer.

Fertilization

The recommended rate of fertilizer per hectare is 3 bags 14-14-14 and 1 bag Urea. One half of N and all of P and K is applied in the furrow and then cover 2 to 3 cm layer of soil before planting. Fertilization may also vary as recommended by the Bureau of Soils as a result of a soil analysis.

Weeding

Weeds are the unwanted plant companion of crops. Besides serving as hosts to plants pests and diseases, weeds can reduce corn yield by as much as 50 to 80 % if left uncontrolled.

Weeds are commonly controlled by hand weeding, hoeing within the row and cultivation in between the rows.

Detasseling

Detasseling is achieved by removing all the tassels of corn plants. This is done as soon as the tassels emerge

Crop Protection

Baby corn requires practically no application of pesticides because the crop has short growth duration thereby eliminating the residue factor and minimizing in production cost.

Harvesting

Timelines is the most important consideration in harvesting baby corn. Ideally, young corn is harvested 2 to 3 days after silking or 50 to 55 days after emergence. Harvesting duration may lasts for 15 to 18 days, which is carried on by, hand picking.

Cobs for market must have a good quality. Young cob corn of excellent quality is straight, has uniform ovary alignment, is 4 to 11 cm. long, 0.8 to 1.8 cm. in diameter, slightly yellow to yellow color, sweet and not fibrous (Yodpetch and Bautista). Cobs must be free from bites of corn borer, must be clean and not broken

Since this is wireless, you can take it anywhere you want like a cell phone. No monthly wireless bills, service plans, or commitments—Amazon takes care of the wireless delivery. It also has a rechargeable battery and a charger too. The only disadvantage now on this device is wireless is capability (Whispernet™ ) only available in the US for now. But maybe soon it will be available worldwide by merging with other local network providers. There also a business opportunity on the launching of this device.

I’ve read an interesting story in Entrepreneur magazine about a tool steel businessman who’s business was almost brought down to it’s knees due to cheating employees, Asian financial crisis back in 1997 and his spending attitude. It’s really common sense that living in frugality will really help a business manage it’s finances well, not only in business but also in our ordinary daily living as a typical worker. But not everyone have that discipline especially if your spouse is not thrifty enough even though you did your best to become frugal. The COO of the Special Steel Products, Inc., Joseph Anthony Pardo said so himself that “although the Asian financial crisis was totally unexpected, the company would not have been as hard hit if they handled their financial well.”

Another aspect that became their major problem is the employee’s dishonesty. In 1986, when some of their former employees started selling cheap steel to their clients, claiming that they were the same as Bohler. The company lost a number of clients to the copycats who offered a cheaper yet substandard alternative. They (dishonest employees) also resorted to unethical means just to sell such as cheating the customers by substituting materials, and spreading black propaganda about their company.

Employee honesty is really hard to predict and determine. It’s beyond the employers control to make an employee honest even the employer is fair to it’s employees. Based on the story, I think, a contributing factor that solved his employee problem is the creation of human resources department. Having a human resources department will, at least, minimize the error in employee selection. The problem is prevented before it start by selecting the proper personnel suited for the job and from the very start the HR will determine the employee’s attitude by giving psychological tests on the hiring process or conduct evaluations and trainings with it’s existing employees.

On the marketing side, to beef up sales, Joseph and his staff studied customers’ preference and needs more carefully and used them as a guide in deciding on their inventory mix. ” Before it was more of a gut feel. But now we support that gut feel with some figures through surveys. Among our staff, we started having sessons for inventory forecasting” he shares. For example, slow moving inventory was sold at a minimal mark-up just to turn stocks into cash. They also took better care of clients, focusing more on customers who were loyal than those who were price conscious”.

On “focusing more on customers who were loyal” it is interesting to note that customer retention is very important because it shows how you make a customer happy and I think that no advertising and marketing gimmick will top that. If you have happy customers, the word of mouth advertising will take care of itself.

As I’m browsing the internet I found a business idea that scoops dog waste and made it into a business. I’m not sure if this business will work in a third world country like us but I think there are places in this country that have a high standard of living like in some exclusive subdivisions.

As I was reading the article, I can’t help myself laugh on this kind of business but as long as it’s not illegal, why will I make fun of it? right? One reason I think why this is a good business idea is the answer on number 9 on the frequently asked question:

9) “Why would anyone pay you to clean up after dogs?” Busy dog-owners are delighted to pay someone to have this done! Many dog owners need a way to dispose pet waste that is both legal and practical. Some cities’ refuse departments prohibit the placement of animal waste in with residential refuse. Uncollected dog feces is a significant contributor to ground water pollution. Uncleaned back yards stink, they annoy the neighbors and attract flies that lay their eggs on the feces and then move on. Pets and people using dirty yards track poop into the house. You can provide simple, neat, and cost-effective solutions to all these problems and more. Lack of time; physical difficulty; and the “Repugnance Factor” mean many people are more than happy to pay someone to do this necessary chore. Some clients even tell us we are a “godsend” and credit us with stopping family quarrels!

According to the news “The “lifeline aid” programme, limited to about four million poor households, will see families receive a one-off payment of 500 pesos (13 dollars) to help meet rising electricity costs, Social Welfare Secretary Esperanza Cabral told reporters.” ( Source: Yahoo Asia News )

Salesperson approaches with her usual “bili na” (”Buy Now”) or “how may I help you Sir/Ma’m?” welcome. Customer brushes off salesperson and continues browsing alone. The customer’s reaction may seem a bit rude, but reasonable. Unless they have a question or need help, most customers would rather do without the sales routine. They don’t want to listen to another hard-selling pitch or have someone trail them around the store. Whether you’re selling clothes, food or insurance, you and your sales staff must know the low down on clinching a sale. This experience happens to me not usually but on one particular department store it does. On the Philippine souvenir section in Robinson dept store in Cainta. Not only the sales staff follows your trail and watch your every move, some employees are annoying and guarding you like a thief. So what’s a salesperson supposed to do? Well, they can continue their age-old, ineffective, and irritating way of approaching customers, or they can try the following pieces of advice to see to it that the customer is comfortable, interested, and ultimately taking out his wallet to make a purchase:

Dress the part. Good grooming is important in practically every job-but even more so in sales. Salespeople are at the front line, and give customers their first impressions of the business. So, look your best and put on what’s most appropriate for the job. If you are selling apparel, take special care with your own clothes and appearance.

Believe in your product or service. An insurance sales associate, says, “If you yourself are not convinced of your product or service, how will you be able to convince others? In any business, your credibility is important. Don’t say things that you won’t be able to support, or you will eventually embarrass yourself or tarnish your name ”

Have a good offer. According to The Irresistible Offer by Mark Joyner, customers usually have four major questions in mind when approached by a salesperson. “What are you trying to sell me?” “How much is it?”, “Why should I believe you?” and “What’s in it for me?” Therefore, Joyner stresses the importance of having an irresistible offer - a product that is both attractive and useful. After all, a customer can spend their hard-earned money in other ways; give them a good reason to spend it on your product or service.

Consider their time. People usually don’t have the whole afternoon to listen to a sales pitch. Make sure the person whom you wish to talk to is free and willing to listen. It’s usual for a client to already know the background of your company and products, and would like to go immediately to the cost. This is not a bad thing-he probably doesn’t want to waste time, But if a client has only 10 or 15 minutes to spare, perhaps you can re-schedule the meeting because chances are, he will not focus his attention on what you will be presenting.

Show you are honest. Clients usually sense if you are just after their money, so get a little bit more personal with them. For example, if family is important to a female customer, then make her see the importance of your product not only to her, but to her family as well. That is where building rapport comes in.

Ahem…I was just kidding about the new computer table in my post title, since it was just a remake from an old antique office desk. For more than a week I painstakingly build my own design using those hardwood parts from the old table. I also use AutoCAD making the design to speed up the designing process but since I lack woodworker tools like an electric saw, a plane and electric sander to make a more professional look on my creation, I spent more time making it but still the end result is not bad at all. I have a portable compressor and a spray gun for applying the varnish but decided to use a paint brush instead because it was messy.

The only electric powered gadget I have is an electric drill. The rest are done manually. If you like to get the drawing plan in AutoCAD format, just visit my other blog http://www.cadblog.net and I’ll make another post about the details. So without much ado, just see the photo below:

On the lower left side, the CPU is located. The reason why I chose this design is for the CPU to be more cooler unlike if you will put it under the table like most computer table in the market. Air circulation is better this way specially if your CPU casing have a box fan on the left side. On the table top, the monitor, keyboard, speaker and mouse will be placed. It is more comfortable because the printer and scanner will be placed on left side shelves (see photo). On my initial design, I didn’t have the drawer on the middle. It was for the keyboard but I hate throwing away the old drawer from the old office table so I decided to put it back again. Last but not the least, the best thing about this computer table is you can dissemble it for transportation and fasten all the parts again with less than 40 pcs of wood screw, no nails or glue! I promise!
