"Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) has just been made available for download a few hours ago. First came out into beta back in September 2010, Microsoft’s IE9 supports HTML5 and comes with a lot of bells and whistles.

Some of the features included in IE9 aren’t really new and have long been available in other browsers like Google’s Chrome.

And as I’ve said before...

The new IE9 feels faster, looks cleaner and more integrated (design-wise) to Windows 7. So far, I’m a somewhat impressed with the additional bells and whistles. It’s like Chrome + ActiveX = IE9. The address bar also serves as search box.

It’s got a smaller footprint too and event he installation file is just 18MB (though Firefox is only around 8MB and Flock is 13MB). I was pretty interested with the HTML5/CSS3 support and the web app approach which is something I’m planning to include in the upcoming re-design of this blog.

And just like what Chrome does, each tab of IE9 runs as a separate process so even if a windows freezes up or crashes, you can close it and the other windows will remain open and running just fine.
"

InfoMaxx selling iPad 2 for Php36,500

Source: YUGATECH.COM:

"Spotted just this morning are a couple of new iPad 2′s being sold at local store, InfoMaxx Megamall. Their grey market price — a cool Php36,500 a pop for a 16GB WiFi model.

There’s been a really short supply of iPad 2 nowadays and even the Apple Online Store is delaying shipments by as much as 4 to 5 weeks from date order.

The entry level iPad 2 retails for $499 (might go for Php23,999 when it officially arrives in the Philippines). The Php36,500 price is primarily driven by low supply and huge demand.

Anybody will to pay premium price just to get your hands on the first few iPad 2 in the Philippines?"

Pre-Order the Nokia E7 at Php32,000

Source: YUGATECH.COM:
Sanjay Jha and various leaks already told us as much, but here's the official word: the WiFi-only Motorola Xoom is launching on March 27th for $599. Retail availability will be truly widespread, with Amazon, Best Buy, Costco, RadioShack, Sam's Club, Staples and Walmart all offering up the Honeycomb tablet. Other than the omission of the 3G and 4G radios of the original Xoom, you're basically looking at an identical hardware package. That includes a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, 1GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 5 megapixel autofocus camera, and a 10.1-inch display with 1280 x 800 resolution.

A round of leaks today has potentially pinpointed the second week of April as the launch window for RIM's slick seven-inch PlayBook. An email purportedly sent out by Sears up in Canada confirms earlier echoes, informing buyers that the device will up for grabs on April 10, with preorders possibly beginning as soon as tomorrow. On top of that, an image from Staples' backend sent to Crackberry pegs a 33-day count down to start on the 15th, which lines up nicely with another leaked shot denoting an 'ad date' of April 17. We've also received an unconfirmed tip from a Sprint rep saying that the PlayBook would be landing on the 15th, along with an a smattering of cases and a... stylus? Finally, we've been sent shots of some PlayBook signage apparently on display in a Future Shop in Canada highlighting the device's multitasking capabilities, reminding us 'it's whats on the inside that counts.' Oddly, the same signage mistakenly attaches the Xoom moniker, though we'd imagine that's just a blunder on the retailer's part. Of course, all of this is still completely unconfirmed by RIM itself, so until we hear otherwise, anything could happen. Signage shot after the break, and other photo goodness available at the source links."

New 2011 Macbook Pro arrives, priced

Source: YUGATECH.COM:
"A rep from local Apple reseller, Power Mac Center, sent a note informing me that the new batch MacBook Pros has just arrived. These are the ones that have the Thunderbolt technology (10Gbps port speed, formerly referred to as Intel Light Peak).
Was actually hoping the local stores would sell the laptops at a much lower price than the SRP provided by Apple. Not sure if this is the trend with Power Mac but the last time I bought a Macbook Air at iStudio, it was cheaper than Apple’s official prices."

Asus U36 Review

Source: YUGATECH.COM: "

The U36J is Asus’s latest thin and light entry in the 13-inch ultraportable category. But unlike the other laptops in its category, the NVidia Optimus-touting Asus U36J didn’t save on processing power and packs an Intel Core i5 460M. See full review of the Asus U36 after the jump.

The U36J is pretty thin and light for a 13.3-inch laptop. At just 3.7lbs., it feels as light as my 12.1-inch Asus UL20FT. The thin profile only allows for the biggest port (the VGA port) enough room to fit from top to bottom of the body.
The lid comes in a matte finish and crawls right inside up to the palm rest area. It’s still prone to some slight smudges but not that much to be a bother.

The battery pack at the back protrudes downwards in a cylindrical shape which also serves as a stand to offer some ventilation. It’s rated at 5600mAh (83wH) and offers between 4 to 6 hours of battery life on a single full charge depending on the power mode.

The 13.3-inch display has a glossy finish but is crisp and bright. The standard resolution is in place — at only 1366×768 pixels — though I’d wish they’d offer something higher. The screen is prone to glare but that’s expected of glossy finish.
Keyboard lay-out is wide and comfortable with chiclet-type keys. Some of the keys are are smaller though, like the left Shift key and the Enter key (reverse L-shape but smaller) which can affect typing accuracy sometimes.
The trackpad is spacious, smooth and easy to use with the left and right click buttons separated by a biometric scanner (fingerprint scanner) in the middle.

Aside from the sleek form factor, the specs of the laptop seems pretty decent. The inclusion of the standard voltage Intel Core i5 460M running at 2.53GHz is a bit surprising since I’m used to seeing ULV processors (in the 1.2GHz to 1.73GHz range) in the thin and light category. Here’s the full list of specs, as indicated by Speccy:
Asus U36Jc

13.3-inch display @ 1366×768 pixels
Intel Core i5 460M @ 2.53GHz (2 cores, 4 threads, Turbo Boost 2.8GHz)
3GB DDR3 RAM
Nvidia GeForce 310M + Intel HD Graphics
500GB HDD
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
HDMI port
2 x USB 2.0 ports
1 x USB 3.0 port
3-1in-1 Card Reader
Fingerprint scanner
Webcam
Windows 7 Ultimate

8-cell Li-Ion battery 5600mAh

Laptop performance is above with the CPU getting a sub-score of 6.9 on Windows Experience Index while the GPU got a 5.8 sub-score on gaming.

Battery life is actually impressive — I’m getting around 4 hours on High Performance Mode and just over 6 hours on Power-Saving Mode, thanks to the 5600mAh (83wH) Li-Ion battery. Asus claims this unit can reach up to 10 hours of battery life at very optimized settings though I doubt that’s achievable in real world scenarios.

Asus sacrificed the ODD and dropped it from the unit in order to achieve the slim form factor. It’s a trade-off but something expected for its category. Would have been nice if they bundled an external ODD though.

The Asus U36J is a very capable laptop with very decent specs. It’s a good workhorse that’s also very portable and light to carry around (weighs 1.6kg and 19mm thin). We’re still not sure how much this rig would cost when it hits the market and have not really yet seen it yet in stores (my guess is north of Php35k).

2 pages
Last night, Canon Philippines finally launched their new EOS dSLR line-up — the entry-level Canon EOS 1100D and the Canon EOS 600D (successor to the 550D) along with a slew of point-and-shoot cameras.

Announced back in February 7, the Canon 600D (Canon Rebel T3i elsewhere) replaces the popular 550D and now comes with a vari-angle screen (like the 60D). See full specs of the Canon 600D here.

A new entry-level dSLR was also introduced — the Canon 1100D that comes with upgraded specs.

Canon EOS 1100D
12-megapixel sensor
DIGIC 4 image processor
720p video recording
ISO 100-6400
30s – 1/4000 sec shutter speed
SD card slot
2.7″ LCD display

Suggested retail price:

Canon EOS 1100D – Php31,950
Canon EOS 600D – Php44,990

"The Communicator is alive and has transformed into what is now the Nokia E7. It has gone a long way — slimmer, lighter and faster while retaining that signature form factor. Check out our full review of the Nokia E7 after the jump.

If you’re familiar with the popular Nokia N8, the Nokia E7 looks very similar — a solid, metallic unibody design with a large 4-inch touch screen — but when you flip it sideways and open up the sliding keyboard, the handset transforms into something totally different and reminiscent of the N900 or the decades-old Nokia Communicator. It’s basically an N8 with a physical keypad.
The body is relatively thin (just a few millimeter away from the slimmer N8) and has a somewhat rounded edges with the top and bottom corners a chopped off to make room for ports and buttons — a USB port, HDMI, power button and 3.5mm audio jack is positioned on top while a slender Home/Menu button is placed at the very bottom of the front panel.

Since the Nokia E7 comes in a unibody casing, the battery is built into the device and is not user-replaceable. Likewise, the SIM card slot is accessible from the outside via a small cradle that slides out from the top right side of the unit. Beside it is a slider for controlling the zoom of the camera and on the far end, a dedicated button for the 8MP camera.
On the left side is a single switch that’s easily accessible by the middle finger or index finger that controls the screen lock. At the back is a non-descript 8-megapixel fix-focus camera with dual-LED flash (more on that later).

The slider mechanism is similar to that of the Nokia N97 as it is positioned in a titled angle once fully opened. Nokia was able to make this handset a bit thinner but carving out a few millimeters off the unibody which somewhat buries the display panel into the body.

The full qwerty keyboard is large and spacious although the individual keys are a bit buried into the surface and comfortably typing with both hands could get a little bit time to get used to (the review unit given to me has a different language setting so I’m still groping around with the keyboard ).
When closed, the touch screen has a virtual keyboard you can use to navigate and make calls or send text messages. Sliding out the full keyboard allows you to type longer messages at a much faster rate — like composing mails or even mobile blogging."

Talk N Text Panalo Phone at Php499

Source: YUGATECH.COM: "

Probably the cheapest phone in the market so far — Talk N Text’s today launched a co-branded mobile handset they aptly called Panalo Phone.
The handsets are simple candybar phones which were co-branded with Cherry Mobile and ZTE. The phones are also locked to the TNT network and it’s highly likely the telco is subsidizing for the cost of the handset.

The one in the photo is one of two cellphones in the Panalo Phone line-up (a Cherry Mobile B1). Single-SIM and very light, they only cost a mere Php499.
I am told they won’t be normally sold in stores but will be targeted to markets in the provinces with a direct-to-home sales approach. So if you’re in the rural areas, expect a knock on the door with one of them sales people peddling Php500 phones to your entire family.
The move should increase cellphone penetration outside the cities and hopefully increase the average monthly usage of prepaid users."

NASA says International Space Station is now 'essentially' complete

Source: ENGADGET.COM: "
The news got a bit overlooked among the hubbub of Discovery's final flight and the first humanoid robot sent into space, but the recently completed shuttle mission also marked another significant milestone: it delivered the final room to the International Space Station. While there are still some additional components to be added, the new room dubbed the 'Permanent Multipurpose Module' is NASA's final contribution to the actual assembly of the station and, according to the agency, it means that it has 'essentially completed' all that it had planned. The two remaining shuttle missions will just be carrying supplies and spare parts, along with a little $1.5 billion experiment called the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, which will be used to search for fun stuff like antimatter galaxies and dark matter."

Safari and IE8 get shamed at Pwn2Own, Chrome still safe... for now

Source: ENGADGET.COM: "
Ahead of the most recent Pwn2Own, Google made a rather proud challenge: it'd pay $20,000 to any team or individual who could successfully hack Chrome. Two takers signed up for that challenge -- and then both backed down. One individual didn't show up and a second entry, known as Team Anon, decided to focus their efforts elsewhere. There's still time left for someone to come out of the woodwork and scrape off that polish, but as of now no brave souls have registered intent. Meanwhile, IE8 was taken down by Stephen Fewer, who used three separate vulnerabilities to get out of Protected Mode and crack that browser's best locks. Safari running on a MacBook Air got shamed again, cracked in just five seconds. That, at least, is better than it fared in 2008."

OpenFeint and The9 will stimulate devs to port their games to Android with cold hard cash

Source: ENGADGET.COM:
"Are you a developer seeking the widest and most profitable distribution for your mobile software? The traditional platform for achieving such goals over the past couple of years has been Apple's iOS, but Android's rabid ascendancy has recently turned that into a legitimate question. A question that OpenFeint is looking to sway even further in Google's favor by announcing it will fund the porting of games from 'other app stores' to Android with the help of Chinese online game operator The9. The specially selected games will of course get saddled with OpenFeint integration and the whole effort does have the waft of a publicity grab to us, but hey, it's another few pennies thrown into the bottomless well known as 'Android gaming.' Surely something worthy will eventually come out of it, no?"

Sony-Ericsson Xperia Arc up for Pre-Order

Source: YUGATECHBLOG.COM: "
They will also be accepting pre-orders for the upcoming Sony-Ericsson Xperia Arc on these said dates (update: suggested retail price is Php32,750).

Revealed just last January, the Xperia Arc is a 4.2″ Android smartphone that will succeed the Xperia X10.

The Arc’s camera uses an Exmor-R mobile sensor with the f/2.4 lens. All pictures and videos can be shared in HD on your living room TV via the built in HDMI-connector. The screen now uses Reality Display which is supposed to be brighter and clearer than regular LCD.

Sony-Ericsson’s local PR did not specify the exact date of the release nor an estimated retail price but the pre-order offer might indicate it could be sooner than later.

2 pages
Visited the JBL Concept Store at the Bonifacio High Street earlier this week upon the invitation of their rep who showed me a new line they’ve recently introduced in the Philippines — the AKG Personal Audio collection.

Frankly, I am not very familiar with AKG and this is the very first time I’ve seen their products (mostly microphones and headphones). The local distributor only got the permission to release the AKG line just this January.

I also learned that AKG was actually bought by Harman since 1994 and they’ve been in the audio business for over 60 years.

One of the items they demoed to me and eventually lent out was this AKG K830 BT which is a wireless Bluetooth headphone. The headphone can be paired with your iPod, iPhone or any other music player or mobile phone that has built-in Bluetooth.

Device pairing is pretty easy and simple — just press the button in one of the headphones for 8 seconds and it will show upon your media player or phone and ready to be paired. Pressing it another 8 seconds will also turn off the power of the headphone.

One pretty nifty feature of the AKG K830 is the embedded microphone hidden in one of the earcups. That allows you to make and receive calls when paired with a mobile phone — just press the receive button and you’re talking hands-free in an instant.

Audio quality is impressive, IMO. Sound is pretty sharp and crisp even at significant distance from the streaming device. Bass is good but not that very emphasized though you can feel the omph when the music calls for it. Volume control is also found in one of the ear cups. I reckon you can do as much as 10 meters between the headphone and the music player and still get good sound quality with minimal attenuation (the Bluetooth transmits over a 2.4GHz radio link using the Kleer technology).

Tried the built-in microphone and got good reception despite it’s odd position in the headphone. Had some problems with my iPhone 4′s Voice Control — was having a hard time making the device correctly recognize my voice commands.

The AKG K830 is a neat, light-weight and portable headphone with good audio performance both for streaming music and handsfree phone use. Just could not figure out how they priced this at Php12,990 which, IMO, a bit on the expensive end."

iOS 4.3 out for the iPhone 4, iPad, iPod Touch

Source: YUGATECHBLOG.COM: "
