The New Information Technology Marketplace

As our country begins what I can only hope is a new era, I find myself wondering about the future of our industry. Information Technology took a very hard hit in the Dot Bomb Crash of 2000. I was under contract to Lucent Technologies at the time and the impact there was enormous. Jobs were lost by the thousands, and so were retirements. Now, in 2008 and 2009, we see another financial bomb–but we also see a new vision.

In 2000, the world discovered that just being on the Internet did not guarantee success. Prior to that, business was doing well at moving money around, if not actually producing much. The cash had to keep moving or it would settle to the ground and people would notice that there wasn’t that much new money–just the same funds moving in circles–redistributing. Maybe that is what finally happened. Maybe the music stopped and everyone realized that there weren’t enough chairs for everyone–and panicked.

The financial bomb this time is a bit different and as I am not a financial consultant, I will not try to explain it–even if I fully understood it-which I do not. My concern here is the impact of this market on my industry, the Information Technology Industry. This time it seems, we are not dead center on the bull’s eye–instead we are the arrow point. We went through our decimation and many of us retired, retrained in other fields or just gave up. Others stayed on and have continued to grow with the technology. It’s leaner and meaner and there are far fewer of us to do what needs doing. But, it is also the foundation of the new economy to come.

New energy systems and a rewrite of the way that the Health Care Industry does business will be heavily steeped in Information Technology. Our skills are going to be in more and more in demand as companies around the world, and here in the United States, scramble for ways to create a sustainable future for our planet and our respective countries. We will be right in the middle of it. Are you ready for that? Are you really?

One side effect of the trimming down of our industry has been reluctance to invest in upgrades, to improve efficiency of systems and, most importantly, to create. Older equipment and technology are often still in place–in mission critical positions. Products at the end of their support cycles, that are still working, are still in place. After all, why fix what isn’t broken? Money is tight.

Here is why you should fix it while it is still working.

(1) Because it IS still working. Once a component fails, you will end up scrambling to replace it–making bad decisions and building sloppy installations.

(2) Because new software tools, operating system manufacturers, (think patches), and other manufacturers of equipment, do not perform regression testing back to the beginning of time. If your operation system or other software tools are past that magical line in the sand, new-supposedly helpful-patches and upgrades could break your systems in unforeseeable and unsupportable ways.

(3) Because it is not about keeping your position in a company or in a market. It is about creating new technologies, processes and markets. The old ways don’t cut it anymore and whoever creates a solution to a problem, regardless of country or marketplace, will drive the economies of the world–and of their niche in the global marketplace. If your company creates products or provides services, you need to be on the crest of the wave.

President Obama has asked us to be willing to make hard decisions and to work to create the new technologies that will drive the world’s economy. I for one, embrace the call. Let’s stop trying to make our money by moving money from one pocket to another and begin once again to create. You, the people of the Information Technology Industry, are going to be right at the heart of it. Technologists, look for companies that want to be there too. Information Technology Managers, look for people with passion. Let the wonder that first led you to master an aspect of the magic of technology once again inspire you. This is our moment. This is our challenge. It’s time once again to have some fun with this stuff!

West Virginia’s health care system could save over $1. 1 billion by going digital and centralizing patient care, according to a first-of-its-kind report presented to lawmakers Monday.

Those savings would be seen not just by government agencies, but by private insurers and policyholders, who could benefit directly in the form of lower premiums.

The report should lend urgency to some initiatives that have already begun, like electronic medical records and prescriptions, according to the groups behind its creation.

Lawmakers with a joint interim committee that oversees health care policy responded Monday with cautious praise for the report.

“I think it’s very positive, and certainly provocative,” said House Health and Human Resources Chairman Don Perdue, D-Wayne. “It’s gratifying to see that once again, West Virginia is ahead of the game. “

The estimates in the report, prepared by CCRC Actuaries for the West Virginia Health Care Authority, used insurance claims data from more than 800,000 West Virginia residents, including people in public plans like Medicaid and private plans like Mountain State Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Both the volume and the range of information make the report’s estimates uniquely valuable, Bryant said.

“I don’t know of any other state where private insurers have voluntarily pooled their data,” he said.

The three pieces of “low-hanging fruit” in the report are electronic prescribing, digital medical records and the so-called “medical home” concept of patient care, which prizes close relationships between patients and doctors to provide a broad spectrum of care.

West Virginia has already made steps to adopt these strategies, but the report’s estimates are based on their statewide implementation.

In the case of electronic prescriptions, the report estimates an overall savings of $164 million in 2014, including nearly $51 million in savings to private insurers and $42 million in savings to policyholders. After that, the fruit doesn’t hang quite so low. The report estimates that a statewide rollout of medical homes would cost about $45 million up front and incur ongoing costs of about $368 million.

When subtracted from the estimated 2014 savings of $643 million, though, that still means an overall break of roughly $274 million, with the report estimating that savings growing to nearly $2 billion in 2019.

The most difficult of the three measures to implement is a statewide system of electronic medical records. West Virginia has already installed digital record keeping systems at seven state hospitals, but getting private physicians on board is not so easy.

Estimates suggest that about nine in 10 health care offices still keep everything in paper. As the new report says, up front costs for physicians run from $25,000 to $45,000 and have annual costs thereafter of between $2,000 and $9,000, steep amounts for small practices.

If electronic medical records are adopted statewide in the next four years, though, the report estimates a savings of more than $317 million, including $85 million for private insurers and $84 million for policyholders.

Lawmakers at Monday’s interim meeting questioned whether the federal health care legislation in Congress might complicate the West Virginia efforts cited in the report.

“I’m concerned about the blending of the two,” Senate Health and Human Resources Chairman Roman Prezioso, D-Marion, told Bryant. “I’m glad to hear you say we’re ahead of the curve. I didn’t anticipate that. “

Bryant urged legislators to press ahead with the state’s initiatives, particularly the medical homes, whether or if something emerges from Capitol Hill.

I have one question. Is Capitalism alive or dead in the United States? Is the free market socialist that we claim to have and live in really a mask for a socialist or one day communist society?

Well after the action by the federal government over the weekend taking over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac I must conclude move over Moscow there is a new socialist regime in the world and it is the USA.

Was this action a form of greed or a desire for more power over our society by Washington so that they can have a new reason to raise our taxes to cover shareholder losses as well as so that we can bail out greedy homeowners who bought more house or financed all their toys on their house because they thought they can afford it? Probably yes to both.

Why doesn’t the government just take over all of the financial markets since that is what it is slowly doing every 6 months? All the banks, all the investment firms, all the lending companies and while we are at it lets do the same to oil and farms.

This notion of the housing market getting saved because the federal government’s intervention is just a pipe dream; it is a perception that everything will be ok. Well it won’t. Not until people have money again and can afford mortgage payments or even food.

The problem is that we are so damn materialistic that we want and want and want that our greed has now tied our hands and has forced big brother to come in and take over. You all complained that you did not want it but you are not even responsible enough to take responsibility for your actions and deal with your consequences.

First you say “Stay out of my business government, Banks you should lend to me with out me having to prove anything because I am an American and it is my right!” It is my right to be in debt. The when you are in trouble because you overextended yourself which no one forced you to do but you cry to Uncle Sam for help. No wonder the rest of the world hates the people of this country. Live beyond your means, deplete all other countries of their natural recourses, and woe is me because I cannot afford the new IPod as if you ever needed one in the first place.
