Top Ten Motion Pictures of 2019: Loyalty, Friendship, and Family

I had the opportunity to watch 64 movies from 2019 over the past 13 months. To me, the recurring theme was all about loyalty, friendship, and family. In honor of Oscars weekend, here’s my eighth annual Top Ten list. Which ones were yours?

Honorable Mention: The Kingmaker and Just Mercy.

10. The Nightingale (Dir. Jennifer Kent)

One of the toughest films I've had to watch in a while; an imperative one though, especially in these times where misogyny, racism, and the exploitation of mother earth seem to be the norm by many of our leaders and "men" in power. I highly recommend this piece by the woman behind "The Babadook." Also, congrats to Aisling Franciosi for a phenomenal performance.

9. Jojo Rabbit (Dir. Taika Waititi)

I found this to be more sad rather than funny. It worries me that we, as a generation, seem to be forgetting about the consequences of the past. What an original cautionary satire. Go see it!

8. Ready or Not (Dir. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett)

A fun ride that feels like an homage to home board games. It felt like I was seeing my family or friends during a game of Monopoly or Trouble, as everyone has different motives, goals, and reactions. I believe that in order for this film to be enjoyed to the fullest, it must not be taken literally and you should just go along with it... the drama, the gore, the comedy, and the absurd. The cinematography and edit were a delight, and it looks like it was made for double the budget it was made for. However, I am a little biased, since my boyfriend developed this for Searchlight. I encourage everyone to go watch it with a big group. Congrats to the filmmakers, the cast, the crew, and team at Searchlight.

7. Ford v Ferrari (Dir. James Mangold)

A ride of a movie that is fun, engaging, immersive, and moving. This was a nice break from cars that claim to be fast and furious... This is the type of movie that is just cool to watch in a theater. I truly enjoyed it from beginning to end.

6. The Two Popes (Dir. Fernando Meirelles)

Life is like a soccer match! We may root for opposing teams, but it's the love and passion for the game that unites us. Great film! I wish I could've caught it in theaters. I want to watch it again.

5. The Farewell (Dir. Lulu Wang)

As a product of two countries, I was completely immersed in this story about family, the human spirit, and the similarities we all share as humans, whether we're from China, Mexico, etc. It's subtle, funny, interesting, and effective. There are some amazing shots with multiple people in confined spaces, which is difficult to achieve. There are conversations about identity and culture that anyone who comes from a different country or is a second generation American can relate to. There's so much information on screen that allow the viewer to walk the shoes of our main character; from certain terms, food, "family-isms," etc. I want to watch this again and hope that many people (especially in this country) do. I'm aware it's only July, but as of now, this is my favorite movie of 2019.

4. Pain and Glory (Dir. Pedro Almodóvar)

A story of forgiveness, reconciliation, and overcoming through cinema and the life of Almodovar, through the character "Salvador," through a vulnerable and different Antonio Banderas. This film has everything you love about Almodovar films: pops of color, dry humor, movie references, "taboos," and a full circle payoff. The provocateur is back!

3. Waves (Dir. Trey Edward Shults)

Get ready to swim through waves of ups and downs, and everything in between, as you experience this unique cinematic experience that breaks the rules and doesn't apologize for it.

This film reminded me of movies I enjoyed such as "Mommy," "American Honey," and "Moonlight," due to some stylistic and music choices; however, it doesn't feel like a copycat version of those and it has a director's stamp. Such stamp though is shared with the cinematographer, sound designer, music supervisor, and composers, all of who make "Waves" the true emotional experience it is, allowing it to flow seamlessly. From bold colors, interesting music choices, and camera movements that feel risky, the movie would've felt flat (even boring) without this collaboration.

"Waves" is truly a visual, auditory, and emotional experience that demands you hang tight, as if a wave was coming towards you, but also let loose as if floating gracefully after the wave disassembles. A beautiful movie about family, tough love, opportunity, growing up, fucking up, and forgiveness. One of the best of the year.

2. Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood (Dir. Quentin Tarantino)

Wow! What a fun and exquisite homage to the city of Angels, below the line crew members of Hollywood, and the making and experiencing of movies. I got to watch it in beautiful 35mm and I want to see it again immediately (this time in 70mm). It made me happy live in this amazing city. This might be my favorite Tarantino movie! Tarantino has a gift of storytelling and attention to detail that is respectable and a testament to his love of the craft. This movie is eye-candy and a gem. The way he re-wrote history a la "Basterds" was also a neat move, which leads one to wonder, "What if?" "What is Sharon had lived?" "What if Hollywood wasn't once upon a time?"

1. Parasite (Dir. Bong Joon Ho)

Fresh off Cannes. We need more movies like this. I'm so full of anxiety and wonder, and I'll probably have this movie linger in my head for a few weeks. I HIGHLY recommend this thriller that explores social classes, privilege, and the will to succeed. Thanks PGA for the pre-release screening.

Top Ten Motion Pictures of 2018: Power, Identity, Belonging

It’s that time of the year for me to share my (seventh) annual Top Ten Motion Pictures list. Over the past thirteen months or so, I had the opportunity of witnessing 76 feature length movies with a 2018 release date. The following ten either impacted me in an emotional or intellectual way, they brought back memories, they made me question human behavior, and they reminded me why I love the movies and this industry so much. As I’ve done in the past, I come up with a theme for each year based on the types of movies I listed; this year was all about power, identity, and belonging.

Honorable Mention: Green Book and Shoplifters

10. At Eternity’s Gate (Dir. Julian Schnabel)

Hands down, the best male performance of the year. I’m so glad Dafoe is nominated for an Academy Award. This movie is a reminder why The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is one of my favorite foreign films. There’s beauty in even the most tragic moments. What a treat of a character study.

9. Thoroughbreds (Dir. Cory Finley)

A fun, sexy psychological thriller where sounds, stings, and music stand out.

8. Widows (Dir. Steve McQueen)

Discussion after conclusion is art, and there was a lot of discussion.

7. If Beale StreetCould Talk (Dir. Barry Jenkins)

Woah! This movie is elegant, bold, poetic. It is superior than Moonlight. Scored by the ever talented Nicholas Britell.

6. Love, Simon (Dir. Greg Berlanti)

The gay studio rom-com we’ve all been waiting for. A fresh take on coming out and everything in between.

5. A Star is Born (Dir. Bradley Cooper)

A treat of a movie. From the magnitude of feeling like you’re at a rock concert, to the intimacy of feeling like you’re watching a documentary about a couple in love. Also my favorite music album of the year.

4. Vice (Dir. Adam McKay)

Funny, sad, tragic, and important. A prequel to "The Big Short."

3. Generation Wealth (Dir. Lauren Greenfield)

I waited over a year for this documentary from one of my favorites, Lauren Greenfield (The Queen of Versailles). This is the movie America and the world are in need of right now. You'll laugh, cry, wonder, and question humanity in what I dare say, is one of the best documentaries ever made about human behavior. Support women in film.

2. The Favourite (Dir. Yorgos Lanthimos)

So precise and screwed up. You know a movie is great when your dreams are framed the same way as the movie for the following nights after watching it.

1. Roma (Dir. Alfonso Cuarón)

Mexico is seen and felt in this movie; the good and not so good. Family, the traffic, the music, inequality, the people, the human... There’s grandiosity in this simple love letter to Mexico. It is perhaps this is the best film by the maestro Cuarón, and simply the best of 2018.

Top 10 Motion Pictures of 2017: Not Much Has Changed

Over the past year, I was fortunate enough to watch 73 feature length films with a 2017 release. Welcome to my sixth annual blogpost, where you'll get a chance to read about my top ten motion pictures of 2017. I consider these to be the strongest ones of last year because of the impact they left in me, not just right after their conclusion, but for days, months, or as I type this. These pictures made me question and wonder about my life and the life of others. There's fantasy, period pieces, and diversity (both on and off camera), but what they all share in common is a reflection of society today, that not much has changed despite the mistakes of the past. It is my hope that these pictures inspire and motivate others to seek internal and collective change for the better.

Honorable mention: Coco and Alejandro González Iñárritu's virtual reality piece, Carne y Arena.

10. The Promise (Dir. Terry George)

This is an important movie about the Armenian genocide that changed the course of history forever. It's unfortunate that it didn't deliver in the box office and that not many people got the opportunity to see it; maybe this blogpost can change that a little. I dare to say that Oscar Isaac delivers the best performance of his career.

9. A Ghost Story (Dir. David Lowery)

As someone who contemplates about our mortality on a daily basis, this movie haunts me to date because it makes me question my purpose on earth and whether or not I'm on the path to accomplish such purpose. I didn't love it immediately, but it's one of those movies that stick with you and you learn to love more and more as time goes by. This movie is a reminder that this physical life is fragile and temporary.

8. Okja (Dir. Joon-ho Bong)

Global warming is very real, and this fantasy movie is a representation of that, as well as the greed and irresponsibility that corporations sometimes show towards mother earth for the sake of their interests. Okja the giant pig represents the earth, and the treatment you see her get isn't always too pretty. Jake Gyllenhaal delivers an underrated, stellar performance in this film.

7. The Post (Dir. Steven Spielberg)

This is the reason I love Spielberg movies and why they can be so epic. It's sad that it feels like we're currently living in the same era it takes place due to the current political climate of the country. It's relevant and an important reminder of the mishaps we've experienced as a country in the past. Meryl Streep makes this film hers.

6. Detroit (Dir. Kathryn Bigelow)

Another unforgivable story about African Americans that I wasn't aware of and should be in school history books. Kathryn Bigelow executes another war movie, this time at home. It's upsetting to watch and it is another movie on this list that takes place in a different decade but might as well be today.

5. Baby Driver (Dir. Edgar Wright)

This is an example of why I go to the movies. This was the most fun movie-going experience last year. There's action, drama, suspense, romance, comedy... It's a true V8 ride. Hats off to the music supervisor and choreographers.

4. Hostiles (Dir. Scott Cooper)

A movie about a dog-eat-dog world during the early years of the United States. A movie about empathy, acceptance, and forgiveness. Christian Bale is incredible, and so is the score.

3. Lady Bird (Dir. Greta Gerwig)

A wonderful coming of age movie. Having gone to an all-guys catholic school and figuring out who I was in a small city, allowed me to fully identify myself with many of these characters. Each character is fully developed, no matter how big or small their part is, and the balance between comedy and drama is perfect. This is the feel-good movie of the year that reminds us that attention and love go hand in hand.

2. I, Tonya (Dir. Craig Gillespie)

Another reflection of American expectations and the things that as a society we consider important, such as looks before talent. This is a movie about being underprivileged, seeking perfection, hypocrisy, and being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The pace of this works, breaking the fourth wall works, having comedic relief works. Everything works. This was close to being my favorite movie of the year.

1. The Shape of Water (Dir. Guillermo del Toro)

The most well-rounded movie of the year from my compatriot del Toro. It covers various subjects, such as man v. nature, handicap relationships, being an outcast in a world ran by straight, white men unable to empathize. I loved the use of green and the homage to cinema and classic monster movies. This movie is basically about how we are all the same, and I hope many people got that.

Full Sail University: Hall of Fame 8

This past week I had the immense pleasure of participating as a panelist at Full Sail University's eighth Hall of Fame. This annual, week-long event consists of industry panels, job fairs, screenings, and an induction ceremony where six graduates who are doing tremendous work in their respective fields get inducted.

I participated in five panels, three of which were recorded and you can watch below. It was so humbling to share the table with greats such as Sound Designer David Farmer (The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogy) or Co-Executive Producer Troy DeVolld (Hollywood Game Night, Dancing With the Stars). I'm thankful to the students who showed up to the panels I was a part of and asked great questions, which taught me new perspectives and reinforced my knowledge in what I do.

For me, this event was a retreat. Despite the lack of sleep and my lost voice, it has recharged my batteries and inspired me to go back to Los Angeles and work even harder and more passionately.

I want to thank every "Hall of Famer," fellow graduate, student, and the faculty & staff for making me feel at home and motivating me so much. Listening to your stories and experiences, and spending time with you have affected my personal and professional life significantly. From DJ Swivel's Grammy for Closer to Steven C. Miller's new movie deal to direct Escape Plan 2 with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. I am so grateful for this new group of people I now get to call family. I'm looking forward to seeing you succeed this year and I can't wait for Hall of Fame 9.

Top 10 Motion Pictures of 2016: The Perseverance of the Human Spirit

2016 was an excellent year for motion pictures. I had the fortune of watching 57 movies on the big screen and one on the small screen (Comment below if you’re curious which one it was). From those 58, the following are my top ten of the year. As I’ve written in past “Top Ten” blogposts, these are the ten that in my humble opinion are the best due to production value, technical elements, story, acting, and the impact they left on me after experiencing them; they were topic of non-stop discussion and they made me contemplate. I also want to note that I found the diversity behind the camera (in these movies) quite fascinating; three were directed by women, two by African Americans, and one by a Chilean. Also, a shout out to A24 for distributing four of my favorite ten.

Honorable Mention: The Neon Demon, Hacksaw Ridge, Hidden Figures, and Sully

10. 13th (Dir. Ava DuVernay)

I’m usually picky about including documentaries on this list, but it was so impactful, chilling, and eye-opening that I had to include it. This is an important piece that should be shown in schools all over the country. It shows a sad but true reality in an engaging way. Hopefully Ava finally gets the Oscar she so rightfully deserves.

9. Hell or High Water (Dir. David Mackenize)

Thrilling and fun, yet an accurate portrayal of the racial and economic tensions that face the country. This was a sort of modern western that is scarce on the big screen.

8. 20^th Century Women (Dir. Mike Mills)

An homage to mothers and women, this is probably the most human movie I saw this year. The use of pictures is something that stood out to me. Brought to us by one of my favorite producers, Megan Ellison.

7. Moonlight (Dir. Barry Jenkins)

A movie that breaks rules and exposes you to a rarely shown world in a raw way; growing up as a black, gay man in underprivileged America. A shoutout to my friend and casting director Yesi Ramirez, CSA for casting the best ensemble of the year.

6. Lion (Dir. Garth Davis)

Similar to last year’s Room, this two act film is a magnet and a reminder that things aren’t that bad here in the United States. It's about family and finding one's roots and purpose.

5. Nocturnal Animals (Dir. Tom Ford)

This is probably the most suspenseful movie of the year (It’s up there with Don’t Breathe). I almost wanted to walk out of the movie theatre at one point, but that’s a great thing. It’s a story within a story, which makes it interesting and engaging.

4. Into the Forest (Dir. Patricia Rozema)

Directed by a woman, Into the Forest is a pro-women, pro-life movie that is underrated and should have been more widely released. Evan Rachel Wood delivered one of my favorite female performances of the year.

3. American Honey (Dir. Andrea Arnold)

My favorite release from A24, this is another movie that exquisitely portrays the disparity among social classes in the country. Intersting use of music, credits, and aspect ratio too! A must-see.

2. Jackie (Dir. Pablo Larraín)

Where do I begin with this one. Every decision on this film was on point. The score (which is my favorite of the year), that super 16 mm, the minimal use of stock footage, the production design. Along with my favorite movie of the year, I watched this twice and enjoyed it even more the second time.

1. Silence (Dir. Martin Scorsese)

The film that finally got made! After almost 30 years, Scorsese finally brings this dream project to the big screen. This was the most thought-provoking and impactful film of the year. Garfield, Rodrigo Prieto, and Scorsese deserve accolades for their work. There’s still hope for the Academy Awards.

Why Isn't Caitlyn Jenner Tweeting About It?

Hello! I hope you’re as excited as I am for Sunday’s telecast of the 88^th Academy Awards. I’ve already filled out my ballot at the production company I work at. While filling it out, I stopped for a minute when I landed on the “Best Original Song” category. It brought a smile to my face to see that two of my favorite songs from last year’s movies happened to be nominated. They are Manta Ray from the thought-provoking documentary Racing Extinction, and Simple Song #3 from my third favorite movie of the year, Youth. I would have selected one of those two, but I reminded myself that I need to win this ballot and filled out the most obvious choice. (Wonder which one it is?)

However, I was deeply saddened earlier during the week one morning on my way to work. I was listening to a segment on KPCC about ways in which producers will shorten the awards show. It was heartbreaking to hear that I won’t get to hear my two favorite songs performed live simply because they are not “commercial” enough. As opposed to having all five nominated artists perform their songs like they normally do, this Sunday you’ll only be seeing The Weeknd (Earned It from Fifty Shades of Grey), Lady Gaga (Till It Happens to You from The Hunting Ground), and Sam Smith (Writing’s on the Wall from Spectre).

I haven’t really jumped on the #OscarsSoWhite bandwagon or been vocal about the lack of diversity (I mean, it’s a good year for Mexicans. Viva México!) at this year’s awards, but I wonder if I now have observations in regards to this because these are my favorite songs, or because it is now beyond the lack of diversity in the acting category. Anohni, who would have performed Manta Ray, is the first transgendered performer to ever be nominated in the category. Why is this not making headlines? Why isn’t Caitlyn Jenner tweeting about it? Sumi Jo, who would have performed Simple Song #3 is a South Korean soprano.

I can only imagine how these two phenomenal singers felt when the weeks passed by after they learned they were nominated and not hearing back from anyone working on the show. Anohni wrote an open essay voicing her thoughts and concerns, and explains why she decided not to attend the ceremony on Sunday.

“…Now the papers were naming me as one of two artists to have been ‘cut’ by the Academy due to ‘time constraints.’ In the next sentence it was announced that Dave Grohl, not nominated in any category, had been added to the list of performers,” Anohni wrote. “…The deeper truth of it is impossible to ignore. Like global warming, it is not one isolated event, but a series of events that occur over years to create a system that has sought to undermine me, at first as a feminine child, and later as an androgynous transwoman. It is a system of social oppression and diminished opportunities for transpeople that has been employed by capitalism in the U.S. to crush our dreams and our collective spirit.”

This blogpost is not a rant but an observation. I wrote this because I’m a fan of both songs (and movies) and wanted to bring it to your attention since no one really is. If you have not listened to these fantastic songs, you can listen to them below.

Producers Guild Awards: A Night for the Books

This past Saturday I had the opportunity to be a part of one the most exciting industry events for the second time. As a Producers Guild member, I attended a nominees breakfast and discussion presented by The Hollywood Reporter. The event, which took place at the Ricardo Montalbán Theatre on Vine, featured a producer from each PGA nominated picture. The discussion included topics such as the hardships of production, the casting process, and the controversial lack of diversity on and off screen. Dede Gardner (who went on to win the award later that night for The Big Short) suggested that change starts with us as Producers when it comes to the representation of minorities. Gardner is responsible for the PGA and Academy Award winning 12 Years a Slave, as well as last year’s Selma.

The day continued later that evening at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza where nominees and guests kicked off the night with drinks, dinner, and the awards ceremony. It was really nice catching up with colleagues and friends, as well as meeting with a bunch of inspiring producers and directors. One of the highlights was an appearance by Lady Gaga, who performed her Oscar nominated song, Till It Happens To You. The song is nominated for the documentary The Hunting Ground, which was honored with the Stanley Kramer Award for the positive impact it has caused in the nation.

January 23^rd is definitely one for the books. Besides the fun (and drinks), the night served as a reminder of why I’m here and the goals I set for myself. Congratulations to all the nominees and winners.

Top 10 Motion Pictures of 2015: Survival

After a lengthy hiatus from contributing to this blog, I am back for good! My goal is to write three or four posts a month as part of a new year’s resolution. To kick off that resolution, I found it fitting that my first post of 2016 is a flashback to last year (Notice it’s Friday? #FlashbackFriday) and since we’re currently in awards season.

From forty seven movies I watched (released in 2015), these are the ten that in my humble opinion are the best due to production value, technical elements, story, acting, and the impact they left on me; you know, there are movies you simply can’t stop thinking about or they lead to thought-provoking dialogue, and these were it. And don’t worry, my thoughts on each movie are very brief and don’t contain spoilers. If you’re interested in the post of my top ten from last year, click here; no, here!

10. Ex Machina (Dir. Alex Garland)

Chilling, fascinating, and scary at the same time. Ex Machina makes you question the direction in which we’re going as humans when it comes to technology and artificial intelligence. I found the use of arechetypes and foreshadowing exquisite and not over the top.

9. Macbeth (Dir. Justin Kurzel)

I wish this movie had been on the radar during the awards circuit. It’s such a piece of art with phenomenal production design, breathtaking shots, and an interesting use of red and yellow colors that aid the story visually. It requires full attention and commitment, due to the nature of the dialogue and language, but it’s a feast to the ears and eyes.

8. Beasts of No Nation (Dir. Cary Joji Fukunaga)

My biggest complaint is that I wish it had been released in more movie theaters! A Netflix representative agreed with me. I had the fortune of watching this on the big screen, absorbing all the sounds and visuals the way they were meant to be experienced. Abraham Attah, is a first time actor from Africa who plays our protagonist and he’s a gem.

7. Mad Max: Fury Road (Dir. George Miller)

Talk about the definition of an action movie. This was probably the most fun I’ve had at the movies in a while.

6. Steve Jobs (Dir. Danny Boyle)

This movie is a roller coaster of high energy that’s divided into three phases that take place in different years. The way it’s structured is what I enjoyed the most, and the tempo of the storytelling. If music was visual, this is what watching good music would be like.

5. Room (Dir. Lenny Abrahamson)

Dark, haunting, and hopeful. Room is another movie where the edit and structure worked really well. Two acts, very different from each other, that deal with human issues that anyone can relate to in one way or another. Along with Abraham Attah, Jacob Tremblay is not only a breakthrough child actor this year, but a breakthrough actor, period.

4. The Hateful Eight (Dir. Quentin Tarantino)

This movie is a treat to any cinephile. I had the fortune of watching it in 70mm with the 12 minute intermission. Another fun and challenging movie to watch from Tarantino.

3. Youth (Dir. Paolo Sorrentino)

An incredible artistic accomplishment that is classy, funny, and interesting. If you’re into music, I doubt you won’t enjoy this. It’s different from many things that are out there at the moment.

2. The Big Short (Dir. Adam McKay)

Probably the most important movie in terms of the story and theme. What a great way to compile a heavy load of critical information into a two hour movie. The dark humor fits with the unforgivable damage and tragedy that was caused during the 2008 housing crisis.

1. The Revenant (Dir. Alejandro G. Iñárritu)

I watched this three times; I think there’s no need for me to write much to describe my admiration for this ambitious and elegant movie. As many of you know, Iñárritu is my favorite filmmaker and a huge inspiration in my life, but that’s besides the point. The Reventant is a game changer that will move your senses in various ways.

26th Annual GLAAD Media Awards

This weekend was one for the books. I got to be a part of the 26^th Annual GLAAD Media Awards! For those of you who aren’t familiar, GLAAD is a non-profit organization that works to amplify stories from the LGBT community and issues that build support for acceptance. Every year they put together the GLAAD Media Awards, which recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate, and inclusive representation of the community and the issues that affect their lives.

I came on board as part of the planning committee for the awards thanks to my friend Cody Lassen, who is a member of the board of directors. These past few weeks consisted of seeking local talent for the ceremony’s reception, obtaining donations for a silent auction, selling seats to the event, and some other things. I am thankful to my friends Rob Schneider, Darren Bousman, Keith Blau, Phil Pallen, and Roland Emmerich for their valuable donations to the silent auction. At the actual awards show, which took place at the Beverly Hilton, I worked as a talent escort to Roland Emmerich, who was presented with a Stephen F. Kolzak Award for his contributions to various non-profits that support prisoners’ rights, shelter for homeless LGBT youth, marriage equality, and children in Cambodia. His upcoming independently financed film, “Stonewall,” covers the 1969 riots in New York that sparked a civil rights movement.

As someone who’s all for diversity in film, television, and entertainment in general, I’m proud to have been able to share my time, talents, and connections to this respectful non-profit that is saving lives, opening minds, and changing hearts. I want to thank Craig Bowie and Ricky Carter for leading the planning committee, Cody Lassen for encouraging me to do it, the five individuals who donated to the silent auction, all the hard-working team at GLAAD, and my friends who made this such an exciting night. This was an invaluable experience that I would love to be a part of again next year.

Top 10 Motion Pictures of 2014: Survival, Anger Issues, and Superheroes

It’s that time of the year, where I get to write a blog post with a “Top 10” list of what I consider to be the best motion pictures of 2014. Last year was full of surprises. As I’ve been mentioning for the past couple years, my list consists of movies that I consider to be technically and artistically beautiful. These ten pictures have impacted me in different ways. They’ve scarred me, they’ve activated my brain in thought and philosophy, they’ve made me cry, they’ve made me laugh, they’ve challenged me; most importantly though, they opened my mind as a filmmaker, movie geek, and individual.

10. Nymphomaniac (Dir. Lars Von Trier, Melancholia)

The Film Journal International couldn’t be more right when it said, “Who needs 50 Shades of Grey when you have Lars Von Trier.” The provocateur offered me the most challenging movie to watch of 2014. It is raw, intense, mind bending, but most importantly, a rule breaker. Dalai Lama said, “Know the rules well so you can break them effectively,” and I can’t think of a quote that better fits this movie. From the fact that it’s divided in two volumes (Does that make my list a “Top 11” instead?) to his cast choice. From the storytelling done in chapters to the abrupt change in music style. This movie, which is for a limited audience, deserved to be on my Top 10 from the moment I saw both volumes earlier this year at the Nuart Theatre in Los Angeles.

09. The Grand Budapest Hotel (Dir. Wes Anderson, Moonrise Kingdom)

Here’s another film from early 2014 that breaks the rules and has a stamp signature by its director. This “moving painting,” as I like describing it, is quirky and beautiful to observe due to its hurricane of a cast, bold colors, art direction, and the composition of the shots. It feels effortless even though it is such an elaborate and grand piece of work.

08. Interstellar (Dir. Christopher Nolan, The Dark Knight Trilogy)

Some loved it, some hated it, some didn’t get it. This was probably the most emotional film I watched last year. Beyond the outstanding visual effects and suspenseful moments, this movie has heart and does a great job grabbing you instantly and taking you through a black hole (Literally!)

The soundtrack by Hans Zimmer is tremendous and Jessica Chastain once again proves why she is Hollywood’s “It” girl. She definitely got snubbed this awards season.

07. Lilting (Dir. Hong Khaou)

I had the honor of watching this limited release independent film at Outfest Film Festival in Los Angeles. What a treat! It’s a compelling story about a traditional Chinese mother (Pei-pei Cheng from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) who goes to Great Britain to pick up the belongings of her son who passed away, only to discover that he had been in a loving relationship of many years with another man. The language barrier between Cheng’s character and her son’s boyfriend, portrayed magnificently by Ben Wishaw (Cloud Atlas, my favorite of 2012) makes it much more interesting and there’s an amazing 360 shot that will require you to watch the movie if you don’t want me to spoil it! As a supporter of diversity in film, this had to be my movie with LGBT leading characters for my list. Sorry The Imitation Game!

06. Foxcatcher (Dir. Bennett Miller, Capote)

This very slow-paced movie won me over as it kept moving along in the middle of the second act and last act. Those last thirty minutes made it all worth it! Another project by the genius Megan Ellison that is cold, twisted, and heartless and gave me the ability to empathize with the main character, no matter how insane he was.

05. X-Men: Days of Future Past (Dir. Bryan Singer, The Usual Suspects)

I had been waiting for this movie since I watched the first X-Men movie fourteen years ago. This was the best treat for the child in me, to bring Bryan Singer back as a director, a big chunk of X-Men characters from past movies in a thrilling and adventurous movie that has soul and tones of social issues that are current in today’s world. Where else can you go watch a movie consisting of a cast with three Oscars, six Golden Globes, one BAFTA, two Emmys, two Tonys, five Oliviers, and one Cesar award?

04. Unbroken (Dir. Angelina Jolie, In the Land of Blood and Honey)

I had the opportunity to attend the LA premiere of this film at the Dolby Theatre and it was an unforgettable experience. This is a great example of why I appreciate historical pieces. I got introduced to a character I was not aware of, who was able to persevere, forgive, and live to tell his story besides the horrible atrocities of war, the shameful situations he was put in, and the obstacles he faced that determined whether he would live or not. Angelina and cinematographer Roger Deakins did an amazing job representing this person and the scenario he was put in. It’s a shame the movie was underrated and didn’t do well this awards season.

03. Mommy (Xavier Dolan, Tom at the Farm)

A 25 year-old director envisioned this? My respects to Xavier Dolan for directing two strong female characters, a rebellious teenager with anger issues, and for breaking aspect ratio rules. Now I can see why he won the Jury Prize at Cannes. This film made me smile each time a song would come up. From Dido’s “White Flag,” to Alfil’s “Blue,” to “Wonderwall” by Oasis, this film was sort of like Boyhood on steroids. I’m so sad it didn’t get any love in the foreign language film.

02. Whiplash (Dir. Damien Chazelle)

Whiplash was the most thrilling film I watched last year. I was on the edge of my seat most of the time! Who would think that a movie about a college drummer could create such reaction, right? J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller are terrific together, the way the music merges with the pace of the edit is outstanding, and the fact that it was shot in 19 days made have even more respect for the film. This is one of those movies you want to keep watching over and over again.

01. Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance (Dir. Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu, Amores Perros)

If you know me well, don’t say anything before I clear my case. I know Iñárritu is my all-time favorite director, and no, that is not the reason why this monster was my favorite film of 2014. Birdman is so phenomenal that I don’t dare to write anything about it. It is genius! It destroys critics, Michael Bay movies, and YouTubers. So many things about it are true. I enjoyed the mix between real life, the play, and the mind of Riggan/Birdman. And of course, my respects to Chivo Lubezki for that amazingly choreographed cinematography.

Last night I had the pleasure of attending the opening night of Pop 2 Action, a collection of original artwork inspired by pop culture and mass media influences. The event took place at the Hero Complex Gallery in Los Angeles and was organized by Dana Ashmore (Mob City) and Laura Bousman (The Devil’s Carnival).

These amazing ladies are the founders of Gratitude Collaborative, an organization with the mission to generate art that serves a purpose. The goal of this weekend’s exhibit is to raise money to teach art classes to kids, purchase school supplies, feed the hungry, sponsor after-school programs, and support young playwrights.

I found out about the event on Twitter through Darren Lynn Bousman. The director of Saw II, Saw III, and Saw IV is a fellow alumnus from my alma mater, so I figured it would be great to support his wife and this great cause.

There were several pieces that really struck my attention. One in particular by artist Tou Vue. His painting portrays a couple laying on the ground with their backs to each other and holding a cell phone. The artist used this as a way to express how technology and social media is a double-edged sword; it brings us together but at the same time it separates us.

There was art inspired by Kill Bill, The Wizard of Oz, Pokemon, and much more, but I ended up acquiring an amazing painting of Morpheus from The Matrix. It’s basically Morpheus’s face wearing a set of 3D glasses, which represent the red and blue pill that he presents to Neo. The artwork is titled Red Pill, Blue Pill and was created by Lord Byron Bradley.

If you are in the Los Angeles area make sure you swing by the gallery this weekend, check out some art, and support this great cause. They are located on 2020 South Robertson Blvd. In the words of Dana and Laura, “Let’s create a generation of gratitude.”

Help Us Adopt

Hello my friends, happy hump day! I hope everyone’s having a great week and is taking advantage of the season changes such as sweater weather, pumpkin beer, or orange leave-filled streets. Several days ago I had the fortune of supporting Becky Fawcett and Help Us Adopt at their second fundraising event in the Los Angeles area.

Help Us Adopt is a non-profit organization that was launched in 2007 by Becky and her husband Kipp Fawcett, who are adoptive parents of two kids. The goal of the organization is to overcome the financial obstacles of adoption to build everlasting families, regardless of religion, marital status, race, or sexual orientation.

Something I’ve learned since meeting the crew of Help Us Adopt is that adoption is a lengthy process that many families can’t afford due to the high cost. “It’s not only about the kids, but also about the parents,” Becky said at the second LA event that took place at Everson Royce Wines on October 9^th. How important is it to have a presence in the media for the growth of the organization and how has it made a difference?

Media coverage has been essential to the growth of Helpusadopt.org for several reasons: 1) We are a national organization and media coverage helps us extend our reach into markets that we serve but where we don’t have a physical presence. 2) It has helped us reach members of the adoption community. Believe it or not, in general the adoption community doesn’t readily identify itself. 3) Authenticity. Having coverage like The Today Show, CNN, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal helps a young organization like ours establish its authenticity and credibility to those that don’t know us personally.

What's your dream news channel, talk show, etc to appear on? Why?

We’ve gotten an amazing amount of media coverage since our launch in 2007 and for that I am extremely grateful. But there is one name missing: OPRAH.

What is your goal and vision for the organization specifically in LA?

I believe there is a real opportunity for Helpusadopt.org to establish a solid support system in the Los Angeles area. Our mission of family equality resonates in Los Angeles and really means something to people. Family is Family.

Where do you see Help Us Adopt in ten years?

In ten years? I imagine we will have some amazingly strong fundraising events in the Los Angeles area (as in hundreds of guests/donors). I also see that we will be raising several millions of dollars a year and giving away most of that in adoption grants. That kind of significant financial growth will impact our adoption grant program with the growth we need to help more children find the forever families they so rightfully deserve. I would also imagine in ten years and hopefully MUCH sooner, that we develop a very strong celebrity following. Celebrities that have been touched by adoption or care about saving the lives of children who need homes could really impact our work in such a positive way. We need their voices!

What do you think has to be done to facilitate the process of adoption? There are clearly thousands of families waiting to be formed, yet, why is it such a lengthy process and what are some ideas to ease it?

I wish I had the magic answer and I hope someday I come up with it because the number one obstacle standing in the way of millions of children being adopted into loving homes is the fact that adoption is expensive and most families are challenged by the lump sum payment of $30, $40 and sometimes $50,000+. In the meantime, you are asking the wrong person this question. I didn’t write the adoption laws and I certainly didn’t set the bar for the fee structures. I am simply a mother who saw a void in the world of adoption and a group of people who needed help, that’s why I created Helpusadopt.org. Your specific question needs to be addressed to the adoption professional community.

An Electric Night with Mexican and Latino Filmmakers

Hello everyone, I hope you all had a great weekend and had some time to read my previous blogpost. I’m writing to share that I had the opportunity to attend the opening night gala of the Guadalajara International Film Festival in Los Angeles at the Egyptian Theatre on Friday. The festival showcases a compilation of the best films screened at the Guadalajara festival over the summer.

The night kicked off with an introduction to the festival and the contributions it has made for cineastes in Mexico and Latin America. There were also awards presented in different categories to some of the top films showcased in Gudalajara this summer. Then, the “Arbol de la Vida” awards were presented to Emmy-winning reporters Ruben Luengas and Gabriela Teissier, and Academy Award nominee Demian Bichir (A Better Life, The Bridge). The award, which literally translates to “Tree of Life,” is presented to people in the industry who have made significant contributions in their fields.

Following the awards, the film Las Horas Contigo (The Hours With You) was screened. This feel-good dramedy is about family, growing up, and forgiveness. Presented by La Banda Films, it is produced by Roberto Sneider (Frida, Arráncame La Vida) and serves as Catalina Aguilar Mastretta’s directorial debut. I was lucky enough to meet Sneider and interact with him briefly; unfortunately for us, there was an amazing live group performing some salsa and merengue with the volume a little too high, so it was a challenging to engage in conversation. Regardless, it was great meeting people with my friends Marco Molina from Veva Entertainment and Isabel Echeverry from Olmos Kontakto.

It made me so happy to be part of such an electric night with Mexican and Latino filmmakers and fans. It’s comforting to know there’s such a great community of artists that are hungry to tell new and compelling stories. I feel lucky to have expanded my network and I look forward to keeping in touch and potentially collaborating with some of the people I met. Write About Things You Know

Hello everyone, please forgive my hiatus from this blog! It was a busy summer shooting a new sitcom and I just started working in a new Reality show, both of which I’ll write about in the near future.

Last night was definitely one for the books. I got to attend “The Writer’s Room” at the DBA Hollywood. Moderated by Reza Aslan, the discussion panel featured one of my idols, Academy Award winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (Milk, J. Edgar), and Academy Award nominee Craig Borten (Dallas Buyers Club).

The evening started off with a glass of wine and some house music, followed by a stand-up act by a funny man whose name I can’t remember. Anyway, the main event commenced with Mr. Aslan introducing the gentlemen.

So many things were covered. From screenwriting methods, getting started in the industry, issues that ranged from lgbt rights to religion, and pressure to keep momentum after working on Academy Award winning films.

“The most important thing about the story is not an event or a place, it’s a person,” said Dustin Lance Black. He stated that stories are compelling not because they revolve around events, but because they happen to a person. “The king of note cards,” as Mr. Aslan called him, said that even though his stories are based on true events, they are tweaked in a way to provoke the present and spark a bomb that will help change things for the future. For example, he thinks documentaries are interesting because they are informative, but his goal when writing a movie based on true events is to make it applicable to current events so that it can inspire action by people. Something else that Dustin said that really stuck with me was, "Write about things you know."

It truly was an inspirational night. I’ve been a huge fan of Dustin Lance Black’s work since 2008 and getting to sit in the front row and listen to him speak was definitely a highlight of this year. I also had an opportunity to ask him a question during the Q&A at the end of the discussion panel. I asked, “What is the biggest mistake you’ve made in your career that you don’t regret because you learned from it?” He thought it was a difficult question and it took him a while to think about it, but he gave me good advice. Black thinks it’s important to place your projects in good hands and to be on top of everyone and everything. He recalled an earlier project that didn’t come to fruition the way he expected because he let others take too much control of it. Borten also added that it is much better to let producers make creative decisions instead of actors. Now, go write something that moves you!

My Experience Working on La Voz Kids

Hello everyone, I hope you all have a great week! I’m taking this time to share with you my experience working on La Voz Kids. Even though the second season of this Spanish/Kid version of The Voice started a few weeks ago, I waited until today to write about it because I worked on the “Battles” portion of the show, which concluded last night. The show, which airs on Telemundo Sunday nights, had three episodes (April 27, May 4, and May 11) of “las batallas” where 18 out 54 kids made it through to the live portion of the show which starts next week.

I worked as an assistant on the contestant management department, so I dealt directly with the kids and their families. Throughout the week before rehearsals and the tapings began, I made sure they were on time for their meals, their tutoring hours, voice or dance practice, etc. Once rehearsals for the tapings began, I was in the soundstage coordinating they’re arrival to the holding area before it was their turn to go up and perform. At the same time, I also managed to assist the audio department micing lavs on contestants and two family members. Once the actual tapings began, it was pretty much the same drill, except it got crazier but more exciting, since it’s shot as if it was live. The kids were divided in groups of three, totaling eighteen groups. Only one kid per group made it through, so it got pretty intense. It was pretty much “Hunger Games,” as I like calling it.

I must say this has been one of the best, if not the best, work experience so far. One of my dreams came true, which was to work on a singing competition show. I got to be back in Orlando for almost two weeks, which meant I had the opportunity to catch up and work with friends and colleagues, I swinged by my favorite local spots, and I visited my alma mater and spoke to students about life after college and LA. I got to work on a new department and I learned a lot from both the people above me and even the contestants. It was also nice seeing these three episodes on TV after going through that process with my colleagues, the contestants and their families. I wish the best of luck to everyone on the live portion of the show.

My First NOH8 Picture

Hello everyone, are you wearing pink today? I am, and I promise it is pure coincidence. Not only is it Wednesday, but it is the tenth anniversary of the theatrical release of Mean Girls. On another note, I am writing a slightly different blogpost than usual to share my first NOH8 picture and my experience with the campaign since I started volunteering back in December of 2013.

For those who aren’t familiar, the NOH8 campaign is a photographic silent protest that was started in direct response to the passage of Proposition 8 in California back in 2008. Founded by photographer Adam Bouska and Jeff Parshley, the mission of this charitable organization is to promote marriage, gender, and human equality through education, advocacy, social media, and visual protest. Since its inception, over 30,000 portraits have been taken around the world. Many politicians, athletes, and celebrities have joined the cause, including Larry King, Cady Heron (sorry, Lindsay Lohan), Shailene Woodley (The Descendants), Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games), Bryan Singer (X-Men), and even The Power Rangers.

My personal reasons for posing are to raise awareness for voiceless victims of bullying, violence, and hate simply because of the color of their skin, their beliefs, the person they’re in love with, or for being different. As someone who is in the early stages of a Film and TV career, I also pledge to keep producing my own content that represents the voiceless in a respectful and honorable way, such as Know Your Status and Vicissitude, and I'll continue to do so until eventually I’m able to create material for a global audience.

Being involved with the campaign is a great way to be part of something bigger than yourself. I am also grateful because I’ve had the opportunity of meeting amazing people the last times I’ve volunteered, including Adam of course, whose work I’ve been following since high school, Rachel Crowe from Season 1 of The X-Factor, and Keith Blau, someone I can now call a great friend and who has been of great advice when it comes to important career decisions. He's an entertainment lawyer at Universal who's been volunteering with the campaign for four years.

Turkey Donut

Hello everyone, I hope you enjoyed my last post on Lindsay. If you had the chance to catch the docu-series, feel free to comment on it. I’d like to see if you agree or disagree with me, or if there were some shocking moments I forgot to mention.

This post includes a Q&A with director/writer and my friend Ethan Barrett. He is the creator of Turkey Donut, a YouTube channel he launched a few months ago. There’s also a surprise if you scroll down. I was involved in one of his videos. Make sure you click and watch to find out how.

1. What inspired you to pursue a career in filmmaking?

Ever since I was a kid, I knew I wanted to make movies. On weekends I wanted to go out to the movies. When my friends came over, I asked them to bring movies over. I can't really explain the motivation behind it; it's just always been there. However, I had no idea you could do "filmmaking" as a "career." It never occurred to me - as kids we're told to become something like a firefighter or doctor or teacher or engineer. That lasted basically until I got to college, when I found out other studies were actually taking "film classes" where all they did was talk about and make movies. My first semester I added a film major and the rest is history.

2. What kind of content will we see on your channel?

For my channel you can expect the unexpected. It's a no-holds-barred type of comedy in which the most outlandish thing (within limits) happens and takes a huge turn. Hopefully no one sees the endings coming in Turkey Donut Videos, and it’s all the better for that.

3. How did you come up with the name for your channel?

It's hard to say... Originally the name for the channel was, "Challegne Voidoes." I don't need to explain that was almost impossible to refer people to. So I needed to come up with a new name, and the idea of a walking and talking donut popped in my head. Then I mixed it with a turkey, because they're funny, too. Right?

4. What's the story behind "Haunted Shoes?" What motivated you to do it?

The first time I ever watched a reality show, I laughed my head off because I thought the whole thing was supposed to be a joke. I mean, who's really that vocally open about what's going on around them when it's so obvious? Who needs narrators to elaborately exaggerate minor conflicts? Just taking the idea of having two people walking up to each other and introducing each other on television - that's kind of dumb! There are a dozen camera people around, and of course these people have met before. You can just see it in their faces. Reality TV's just funny to me, and it's never funnier than when it takes itself absolutely seriously. Then, one day a friend was watching one of those "spooky house" shows where a ghost-hunter explores a haunted house in night vision, pokes his head around the corner, and has to TELL us that something really scary is going on. Haunted Shoes was my reaction to that show. Reality TV is just hokie; it tries to convince us that the situation is much more dire than it really is. Because even though we may be exorcising evil ghosts, in the end they're still just boiling shoes in ketchup. 

5. What is your favorite scene from "Haunted Shoes?"

Probably the scene where Bob runs off and we hear the sound of the ketchup squirting out of his shoes. Because everyone's taking everything very seriously while all the while the situation is pretty ridiculous. 

6. Can you give us a sneak peak on videos we might be seeing in the near future?          

You can definitely expect to see a lot of more of the favorite characters from Turkey Donut. More planned with Major Tim, Bill of Bill Rates, and Shirley Martinelli Buford, Jr. And Sigmund will soon be embracing a career in hip hop.

I still love Ethan, even though he totally just dissed Reality TV...

Hello everyone! It’s nice to be back after two months. You might remember a blogpost from July 14^th of last year in which I talk about the announcement of Lindsay Lohan’s docu-series on the OWN network. Well, today was the finale of the seven-episode show and I will be giving my personal points of view. So, if you haven’t finished watching, stop reading as there will be spoilers.

I can’t say I didn’t like it since I watched each episode religiously; however, I had so many issues with the show! First of all, I was taken away from the experience many times (especially at the beginning when I was figuring out the tone of the show) because it wasn’t strictly shot like a docu-series, and there was a lot of intervention by the crew. Audio was really bad on some scenes, such as Lindsay’s audio when she’s being interviewed by Oprah at Dina’s house on episodes three and four, and the literary agent’s audio in the sixth episode. One of the things that made me laugh took place on the fifth episode. It’s a scene with the personal assistant, AJ, and someone else having a conversation on the street. People are walking by, aware that they’re on camera but not knowing what to do. They look at the camera, try to hide from it, walk quickly, etc. I just thought it was pretty funny, but also wondered where the second camera was.

Story wise, Lindsay was pretty much a lost cause until the last episode, maybe? I sympathized with many of the people around her who didn’t get the credit they deserved, which are AJ, the sober coach, and the best character of the show, her personal assistant. I am happy though that the show didn’t really take sides and didn’t mind showing Lindsay be a total b****, as the Indonesian lady from the “natural lighting” photo shoot called her. (I love that they showed that).

This show was a guilty pleasure that kept bringing back the audience to see if Lindsay could ever clean her act. Oprah reminded us she is a total boss with her speeches, and even though it wasn’t great on a technical level as I’ve mentioned already, I think the people in the story department did a good job considering all the footage that was recorded and all the events that took place.

#IAMSORRY: An Art Experiment for Many, A Patience Experiment for Me

Unless you live in a cave with no Wi-Fi or don’t work in the entertainment industry, you probably have no problem associating the words #IAMSORRY (Hashtag included) with actor Shia LaBeouf due to his ever growing eccentric behavior these past few weeks.

LaBeouf, who is better known for his roles in the Transformers trilogy and Holes, has been topic of discussion on tabloids and social media lately. The 27 year old plagiarized a graphic novel in his directorial debut, a short film that premiered at Cannes in 2012. Also, he plagiarized fourteen apologies he made. You thought that was strange? Well, he stormed out of a press conference for his latest two-part film, Nymphomaniac, and wore a paper bag at the Berlin Film Festival premiere of such film with the words “I am not famous anymore.”

The paper bag occurrence led to a so-called art experiment in Los Angeles called none other but #IAMSORRY. Taking place at a rented spot across the Buzzfeed headquarters, the experiment consisted of the actor sitting down (with a paper bag of course) for hours. People had the opportunity to walk in and tell him whatever they wanted for as long as they wanted.

Since I recently wrapped on a show and had the week off, I decided to swing by on the third day of the “show.” Doors opened at 11:00, so I got there between 10:15 and 10:30. Little did I know that the line would already be lengthy, but worse, that I wouldn’t get in.

You might think I’m crazy for waiting in line that long, let alone for wanting to talk to a stranger with a bag on his head. Honestly, it was refreshing and much needed. I got some sun and observed hundreds of “different worlds” who where there of the same reason. I got to meet people who work in the industry, I witnessed weird and unique people share their stories about moving to LA. Some talked about their favorite music, someone even brought a boom box. Another one in particular, claimed his upcoming book was plagiarized by LaBeouf. The man stayed there all day handing out flyers and explaining his situation. Even Ray J (Known for being Brandy’s brother and the reason Kim Kardashian is famous…) pulled in. He didn’t get in either. He thought he was too good to cut in line, but everyone refused to let him in.

It was 17:30 and there were still twenty people ahead of me. Doors closed at 18:00, so my chances of getting in were hopeless. I think the reason I didn’t make it was because some lady stayed in the room for almost an hour! I wonder what she told him. That lead me to ask myself what I would’ve said. Honestly, I didn’t plan anything. I probably would have sang Chingon’s version of “Malageña Salerosa” or I would have told him my story about LA in Spanish. The idea of attending was to see what all the hype was about, to experience something I would normally never do, and to test my patience. I was successful.

Top 10 Motion Pictures of 2013: Three Matthew McConaughey movies, four period pieces, and a ton of LGBT characters

It’s that time of the year, the “Top 10” list of the best pictures last year had to offer. 2013 was one of the strongest years in a very long time. If you read my “Top 10” list of 2012, you may recall I wished it could be a “Top 20” list instead. A year later, I’m glad I didn’t “break the rules” and create it; if that had been the case, I would’ve had to make a “Top 30” this year. Anyway, as I mentioned a year ago, my list consists of movies that I consider to be technically and artistically beautiful. These ten pictures have impacted me and left a mark in me. They offered different points of view, and even though some were challenging to watch and analyze, they were of value and importance to me as a person and filmmaker.

10. Mud (Dir. Jeff Nichols, Take Shelter)

Mud is a fine example of a strong independent film with an amazing story about loss and recovery. I’m glad I had the opportunity to watch it at the Florida Film Festival. There is something about the characters, especially Ellis, the leading young boy played by Tye Sheridan (The Tree of Life), that make them relatable in various ways. (I’m glad he was nominated for a “Best Young Actor” award at the Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards; he definitely steals the movie). This is an underrated movie, at least among my circle of friends and acquaintances. I wish it had gotten a bit more attention.

9. Prisoners (Dir. Denis Villeneuve, Incendies)

Prisoners is a movie with talent galore. It’s sad it didn’t get any recognition in the awards circuit, except for Roger Deakins’s cinematography in the Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards and the Academy Awards. Hugh Jackman and Paul Dano steal the show with intense and unforgettable performances, both of these incredibly talented actors, along with the cast, got snubbed from nominations.

8. Kill Your Darlings (Dir. John Krokidas)

Kill Your Darlings is another underrated movie. No one I’ve talked to about it has seen it. This provocative film, which played at Sundance, presents to us a more mature Daniel Radcliffe. “Harry Potter” portrays a young Allen Ginsberg, the American poet who was part of the beginnings of a movement known as the Beat Generation.

7. The Wolf of Wall Street (Dir. Martin Scorsese, Hugo)

If I had to describe The Wolf of Wall Street in one word, it would be “grand.” The movie is out of control and all over the place, which is why I love it. The art direction is the element that appealed to me the most; the clothes, the cars, the houses. Unfortunately for Leo, this year was very competitive for male actors. He delivers the best performance of his career. As the movie develops, you root for him, he makes you laugh, you despise him, you feel sorry for him, and you root for him again.

6. Blue is the Warmest Color (Dir. Abdellatif Kechiche)

Once more, I’m going to go ahead and use one word to describe the next film, and that is “fearless.” Blue is the Warmest Color is a three hour-long film about how two French girls meet, start a relationship, fall in love, and everything that comes after. I wouldn’t be surprised if twenty-year-old Adèle Exarchopoulos didn’t undergo a nervous breakdown during and after shooting this film. I’m glad she received the “Best Young Actor” at the Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards. Winner of a Palm D’ Or at the Cannes Film Festival, the controversial, NC-17 Rated film, is probably the most honest, brutal, and real story I have seen about a relationship.

5. Blue Jasmine (Dir. Woody Allen, Vicky Cristina Barcelona)

Blue Jasmine has to be one of the funniest movies this year. It is heartbreaking to go through Jasmine’s journey as she falls and jeopardizes the relationships she has with the people closest to her, who also happen to be the most distant. This is one of those movies with strong characters and good dialogue. Cate Blanchett and Sally Hawkins nail their roles.

4. Philomena (Dir. Stephen Frears, The Queen)

The story of Philomena, which is based on a true story, is incredible. Despite some of the tragedies our leading character goes through, it is a feel-good movie with charming moments, all thanks to the chemistry between 79 year-old Judi Dench and 48 year-old Steve Coogan. Another great Weinstein Company art piece.

3. Dallas Buyers Club (Jean-Marc Vallee, C.R.A.Z.Y.)

Dallas Buyers Club is an informative and eye-opening film about a subject that unfortunately is still taboo in a way. I have many friends who were literally scared to have contact with another human being after watching it. It shouldn’t be that way, but at least I feel that the film left an impact and created awareness in people. This is a film about survival, forgiveness, and starting again. It’s nice that after 15 years, the script finally turned into an outstanding piece of work.

2. Gravity (Dir. Alfonso Cuarón, Y Tu Mamá También)

Gravity is a film that has no categorization. I remember being on the edge of my seat during the entire hour and a half; it felt like 45 minutes. I describe Cuarón’s best film to date as a roller coaster of emotions. You laugh, you sweat, and you cry. Many people bash the story, saying it’s too plain, but I think it’s perfect. Its simplicity makes it grand, going deeper than what you see on screen. There are a lot of metaphors and foreshadowing. If you think about it, this film is pro life, it roots for women, and it is a reflection on the fragility of life, to mention a few. I remember hearing and reading about this film for years, so it was very nice to finally experience it.

1. 12 Years a Slave (Dir. Steve McQueen, Shame)

12 Years a Slave is a film that needs to be shown in US History classes all around the nation. It is sad I didn’t know about the story of Solomon until I saw the movie, like many other people. It is a shame (and a blessing) that this is one of the very few films that truly show what slavery was about. I’m going to have to use the word “fearless” again to describe this film and its director, who happens to be a British making a film about slavery in the United States. McQueen and Fassbender collaborate for the third time and need to continue doing so. This film scarred me but also made me appreciate life a little bit more. Every element works, and even though it was tough for me to decide between this and Gravity, this just had to be the best and my favorite film of 2013.

Ad Lucem

Hello friends, I hope you had a great weekend and that you’re looking forward to Thanksgiving because I know I am. It is an honor to share with you Ad Lucem, a short film I had the pleasure of working on back in September. This is a three-part music video for Queensrÿche, a progressive heavy metal band that started in the 80s and has sold over 20 million albums worldwide.

The Veva Entertainment Co. production is produced by Marco De Molina and directed by Daniel Andres Gomez Bagby. The duo was kind enough to answer some questions, making this my third “Q&A session” on my blog. (You can check out the previous one by clicking here). So for those of you interested in producing or directing, I hope this Q&A is resourceful.

MARCO DE MOLINA (PRODUCER)

What was the most challenging aspect of producing this short?

Logistics. We had the band available for only two days since they were getting ready to go on tour, so we had to coordinate numerous things around these dates. Locations, talent, crew, equipment, etc. I had to work many deals on many different levels to make it work because we shot on a Monday. And as you know, in L.A., if you shoot over the weekend, you get equipment One-day rentals over the weekend, so, that was a challenge.

We were fortunate to have Brian Krause, Cathy Baron, Erik Aude, and R.J. Adams, who were interested in the project and came on board – they have busy schedules, so we needed to also find a way to accommodate them into the mix too.

When we realized the actual magnitude of our project, and the considerable amount of setups, and sets we needed to pull it off, it is when we decided to shoot with two cameras, which will allow us to move faster. But as you know, more cameras, more crew, more money. So we needed to be very savvy about where to allocate our resources the best. It is sad that we had to scratch a scene altogether so we could get the best piece. We were a little bummed out because we were excited about shooting that particular scene, but it was simply not possible. So Daniel Gomez and Christian Moldes (they both wrote the screenplay) needed to re-write things. There were still changes even the night before the shoot that the script needed to be adjusted to. It was great working with both of them on this level. Producers always feel like the bad guys because they say yes or no to things based on costs/availability. So it is great to have a team that understands that, and vice versa. We all want what's best for the project. And we did it.

We looked into different locations, studios, stages, etc. We like to build our own worlds, and we are fans of practical effects, so we were very fortunate when our 1st AD, Gus Peña, mentioned to Daniel Gomez and I about Central City Stages. We went to check them out and they were just wonderful. They worked with us and it made the best spot for our production.

The day of the shoot we had about 60 people on set, between crew and talent, and we had about 42 setups to go through in 12 hours! There were multiple sets we had to build and dress the day before and during the shoot. I knew that it was imperative we needed to be as proactive as possible. So, there was never any downtime for, literally, anyone. But, by the time camera wrapped, we were only waiting for DIT and we were out of there.

We have stellar teams and crew. Everyone knows each other. How everyone works. It's our family. And I must admit, one thing I am proud of is that, even at crunch times, everyone is still enjoying themselves and having fun, loving what they're doing. This makes crazy challenging days a simple joy.

What is the most valuable lesson you obtained after finishing the project?

Being resourceful. Always work with people that care about things just as much as you do – definitely key for great results.

How did you come across Queensrÿche?

It was cool because I was at a concert when I met Queensrÿche's A&R and he said the band had seen what we did for Buckcherry's "Nothing Left But Tears" video and that they were interested in working with us. We were immediately excited [and flattered], so a conference call was arranged, we listened to their ideas and off we went to create the treatment. They were excited about our proposal of making a short film instead of a music video.

How is your relationship with Daniel and how does it help (and maybe challenge) with the fruition of your projects?

Daniel and I have a great working relationship. It is rare when you can find someone that you can be and perform without having to worry about the other person, or a person having to worry about you. We both know what we have to do, and we love what we do. The best thing is we are always there to help each other's job be better and make the best project always. We have an inside joke that we simply do not share the same taste in movies, and at times aesthetics of things, but it is the "perfect-different". And due to this fact we've gotten far cooler ideas, that otherwise would have been, perhaps average, if we always liked the same things. We respect and share a mutual admiration for our skills, and we take each other very serious – but, on top of it all, I think a great thing is that we do not take ourselves, individually, too serious, so at the end of the day, literally, no matter how exhausted we may be, we always share a laugh recapping our work day over a beer. Couldn't ask for better.

Which is your favorite scene in the video?

If I had to pick, I'd say the hospital scene when Cathy and Geoff meet while he's all bruised up. I was a little bit worried if the chemistry would be there between them, given that we had very little time to work with them prior to the shoot. People we knew had worked with them separately so they came recommended. So I was very pleased that they both looked good together and the relationship does come across. They have some nice moments and smiles. And another scene I really like is Cathy going into labor – it's gruesome to me. Daniel and Kris Carrillo, our DP, did a wonderful job at capturing the moment, the pain, and then the way Zac Surprenant edited the scene, it is one of those moments you feel you did something cool. Hard scene to watch though, but it is "cool.”

What inspires you to be a producer and who influences you?

My inspiration comes from just wanting to entertain. Simple. It is a great satisfaction to me, for example, that Queensrÿche has millions of fans worldwide, and here we are creating something special for them. That to me is the whole reason why. Entertaining. At the same time, movies, music, and media, are the strongest form of art in our era, and like throughout the passing of times and history, it is art that has defined us as cultures and generations, etc. So, yes, I just want to entertain, and contribute to society through our art form. And, it's fun at the same time!

Who influences me? My team does. They're my force.

DANIEL ANDRES GOMEZ BAGBY (DIRECTOR/CO-WRITER)

What was the most challenging aspect of directing this short?

The need to shoot it in one day because of budget restraints. The continuous changes that had to happen last minute to be able to fit everything in one day. With that said, we did not have the opportunity to shoot more than 2-3 takes. Making it work at such a high speed was a challenge, not only for me but for the actors and the crew as well.

What is the most valuable lesson you obtained after finishing the project?

It’s dangerous to be over ambitious. Not saying it's wrong, but you are walking on thin ice. Though sometimes that type of risks can lead to great things.

How is your relationship with Marco and how does it help (and maybe challenge) with the fruition of your projects?

Marco and I are completely opposite in a great majority of things. Taste, looks, etc, which has worked for us because we end up complementing each other. We both know what the goal is, and we both don't step on each other’s toes. So, we work together seamlessly never losing focus of the finish line.

Which is your favorite scene in the video?

The scene I like the most is the childbirth scene. A new life is born and a life is taken away. A beautiful tragedy.

What inspires you to be a director, where do you get your vision from and what do you do to translate it on screen?

What inspires me, is that moment when you go to the theater, you sit down, silence your phone and disconnect from the real world and engulf yourself in a completely fictional world. That experience inspires me. Of course the need to tell the story, the art of filmmaking are both forms of inspiration and that goes without saying, but it’s the experience of the audience that inspire me. Be it good or bad.

My vision comes from many different places. Some ideas are born in dreams, others in open conversations with friends, over a couple drinks, and sometimes the visions are fed to you with concepts and you go from there, other visions come from experiences in your daily life or past events. There is no particular place where the vision comes from. After you have a set vision/idea/concept you write down, put it on paper and see where this process takes you. It's crazy how much it changes over time, evolving into something that you would have never thought of had you not start writing it. After this, you go through all the nuts and bolts to produce it and make it happen. You work with every head of department and you make sure everyone is on the same page of what the vision is. Set a style and mood with your director of photography and you work with your actors so that your characters are alive and well. I don't believe it’s any different or unusual from any other director... It all comes down to how prepared you are, how many problems you solved ahead of time in every aspect and most importantly having fun with it.

Can you name some actors you'd kill to work with? Why?

Kevin Spacey, Leonardo DiCaprio, Dustin Hoffman, Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep… There are so many. And why? Why not? Their work speaks for itself.

As I did on my last blogpost, I apologize for taking an inordinate amount of time to add content to the blog. I’ve been quite occupied with the new show I’m working on, but hopefully that will change a little this Thanksgiving week.

Reflection on Los Angeles

Hello friends and visitors, I’d like to begin with an apology for taking such an extensive leave of absence! I graduated with my masters on August 9^th, left Orlando two days later, spent a week in my hometown(s) (Juarez, Mexico and El Paso, Texas), and finally relocated to the city of angels!

I’ve been here about a month and a half and it is hard to believe I still have no Internet; however, that’s not the only reason why I haven’t blogged, I’ve been quite busy. I’ve had the chance to catch up with many of my friends from college and I have worked on several projects.

I worked a few days as a production assistant on a short indie titled Modern Problems. This took place in the flower and fashion districts of LA. The story is about a Los Angeles couple and their relationship issues.

I also ran some errands for Toby, my boss in Orlando, and had the opportunity to catch up and meet some amazing people.

Another project I worked on was a three-part music video for legendary 80s rock band Queensryche. I was a production coordinator and I feel blessed to have met producer Marco De Molina from Veva Entertainment Co. He has been a mentor for me and I’ve learned a lot about production from him during my time here. The final cut is locked, but now they’re working on color correction and sound. It’s scheduled to be released next week, so keep an eye for a blogpost on that along with a Q&A with the director.

Last but not least, I worked as a stand-in and extra on season two of ABC’s The Taste. That was a fun gig because we shot at the "The Voice" soundstage in Universal Studios. I met a bunch of wonderful people.

This blogpost is a reflection on Los Angeles, a city that definitely makes you tougher and smarter in a way. I love the vibe, the sunsets, and the fact that there’s always something fun to do. I visited the GRAMMY museum, went to the Griffith Observatory, attended a live taping of Chelsea Lately, among other things. It reminds me of this blogpost I wrote last year where I debate if I should move here or not. I’m glad I did.

To end this note, I think I was meant to fall in love with movies, television, and entertainment in general before I was born. They’ve always captivated me, they inspire and influence me in various ways, and they are what I want to be a part of for the rest of my life. A friend of mine recently wrote a quote on her Facebook account that goes like this: “Does this mean that you can be anything you want to be when you grow up? Well, that's certainly the American dream. But it's also the American myth! It's democratic and reflects our national character to say that anyone can become the next president or CEO or movie star. But the truth is you can become only a highly developed version of who you already are -- you can only grow into your own potential. You've been wired from early in life, perhaps even from birth, to love certain things, to see the world a certain way, to blossom in particular environments, and to respond naturally and easily to specific opportunities.” I was wired from early in life to love art in the form of film.

Vicissitude at The Plaza Classic

This past weekend went by in an instant as I hung out with family and friends back home in El Paso, TX/Juarez, Mexico, but more importantly, presented Vicissitude at the El Paso Plaza Classic Film Festival as part of their “Local Flavor” selection.

The screening took place at the Museum of Art in downtown El Paso. It was nice to check out some of the very impressive pieces of art they had on display. A good number of people showed up to the El Paso Energy Auditorium at the museum to watch the documentary; it was nice to see so much support from close family and friends, some cast members, Kickstarter donors, as well as strangers (some who are now friends).

Optimum Exposure TV, a start-up video and photography company, came out to photograph the event and do a short interview for their website and YouTube channel.

Sunday I had the opportunity to meet a few students who traveled from different cities of the United States to attend the festival. I was approached by my friend Oscar Garza, who is a writer for TheProspector and a Plaza Classic Film Club Facilitator, to talk to them about the process of making the documentary, some of the challenges, and many other things. He then invited me to watch The Third Man (1949) on beautiful 35mm at the Kendle Kidd Performance Hall. It would’ve been a sin to leave El Paso without catching a classic flick at the festival.

It was a great weekend and the lack of sleep was totally worth it. Being home this past weekend for both business and pleasure made me realize I am blessed to have many individuals around me who support and love me, but push me to be the best I can be. Oprah once said, “Surround yourself with only people that are going to lift you higher.” I try to stand by those words on a consistent basis.

An Evening With "Lone Ranger" Crew Members

Hello friends, I hope everyone’s doing well. I am actually feeling somewhat melancholic as I type this blogpost because I’m sitting at my last class at Full Sail University. Thanks to this master’s program, I started this blog and have been blessed to meet new people through here. I want to thank my 300 unique visitors and the over 4,000 people who have viewed my blog this past year. But anyway, as a 1^st AD I worked with once said, “There’s no crying in film.”

My topic for today is about a Q&A panel I attended a week ago at Full Sail. The event was hosted by “Women in Film & Television Florida” and featured three crewmembers from Disney’s The Lone Ranger. The panel consisted of Andrew Campbell (production assistant), Ann-Maree Hurley (make-up artist), and Todd Warren (stunt double for Johnny Depp).

All three of them spoke to students and guests about how they got started in the industry, what other films they have worked on, and the overall experience working on the Jerry Bruckheimer film.

They all agreed that one of the most challenging aspects of working on this film was shooting in the middle of the desert in Arizona under infernal conditions, as well as experiencing some sandstorms occasionally. The shoot took nine months to complete and took place in five different states. For Todd, he said the most challenging thing he had to do was a “yo-yo” stunt while riding a horse.

The panel lasted a couple of hours, and of course, someone in the audience had to ask them towards the end what their thoughts on the box-office results are. For those of you who don’t know, the film hasn’t been doing too well considering that the budget was $215 million. However, it is still being released in other countries and I mean, most of a summer "blockbuster's" profit is made overseas. Ann-Maree has seen it five times and loves it more each time she sees it. They are all proud of the end product and encouraged the crowd to show some love and go see it. Based on everything I learned at this panel, I am definitely taking some time to go see it and I’m looking forward to it. If you have seen it, what are your thoughts on the film?

El Paso Plaza Classic Film Festival

Hello everyone, I hope you had a great week. For those of you who didn’t know, I am thrilled to announce that Vicissitude will be part of the “Local Flavor” line-up at the El Paso Plaza Classic Film Festival on August 3^rd.

Vicissitude is a documentary that portrays a personal side of several victims of the drug-related violence in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. People saw it on the news or read about it in the paper for a long time, but they never got to see what these people went through on a deeper level. Whether someone was carjacked, had to shut down a business, or experienced a death in the family, the documentary also gives focus to the history and facts behind the drug war that sparked in 2008. However, it ends on a positive note by covering the actions that are taking place by groups of people and organizations to uplift the city and its people. The Plaza Classic was created in 2008 and will run from August 1^st to the 11^th in downtown El Paso, Texas. "One of the goals of Local Flavor, and of the festival as a whole, is to bring people downtown," says Carlos Corral, the festival's local film coordinator, on an article from Newspaper Tree.

The festival includes a wide line-up of classic films such as West Side Story, Goodfellas, The Sound of Music, among others. It also features panels with specials guests, including Academy Award winning actress Rita Moreno, art exhibits, concerts, and screenings of feature length films and shorts made by local filmmakers.

Vicissitude will be screened along with the short films Art by Gabriel Lira, Mas De Uno by Jonathan Herrera, and Noventa by Bryan Thompson at the El Paso Museum of Art on August 3^rd at 1:00 p.m. There will be a Q&A session after the film and I’ll have copies of the documentary on DVD for anyone who’s interested in taking one home. I’m looking forward to seeing some of cast members and Kickstarter donors, as well as family, friends, and film enthusiasts. See you there!
