Our four-part podcast of the 2011 Spokane International Filmmaker Forum kicks off with SpIFF Director and Eastern Washington University Professor of Film Dr. Pete Porter interviewing three extremely talented documentary filmmakers: Amanda Pope (The Desert of Forbidden Art), Michael W. King (The Rescuers), and J.P. Snaidecki (Foreign Parts, Chai-qian (Demolition)).

Exploring the diverse backgrounds of the panelists suggests that a filmmaker is not born, but created through the process of bringing light to a story that needs to be told.

During this forum episode, Amanda, Michael, and J.P. discuss varying topics--from how they began their journeys into documentary filmmaking to how documentarians live and work, including how they find funding and information on budgeting projects.

Last year, FAVES assisted SpIFF in recording the Filmmaker Forums and we were able to post

Kimberly Reed’s discussion of Prodigal Sons following her showing of her film at the AMC and second scheduled Filmmaker Forum featuring of Kimberly Reed of Prodigal Sons, Jessica Oreck of Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo, Sam Flieshcner and Ben Chance of Wah Do Dem, and local filmmakers Jason McKee of Lady Luck Case No. 37, and Lonny W. Waddle of The Bothe Story. The Filmmaker Forum was moderated by Eastern Washington University’s head of the Theatre and Film department, Marvin Smith (you can listen to the podcasts at the end of this post).

This year’s forums will take place each Saturday of the film festival at 1 PM the Magic Lantern. All you need to attend is a ticket stub from any showing. The two events are scheduled as follows (event descriptions courtesy of SpIFF):

February 5 / Saturday / 1:00 pm

Scheduled to attend are Emmy-award winning filmmaker Michael W. King (The Rescuers), Amanda Pope (Desert of Forbidden Art) and JP Sniadecki (Foreign Parts and Demolition), who will talk with us about documentary filmmaking.

Oscar-nominated animator Geefwee Boedoe (Let’s Pollute) will be on hand to discuss his work.

Composer BC Smith is scheduled to reflect on his career scoring films such as Smoke Signals, Expiration Date, Outsourced, as well as his more recent work.

Eli Craig (Tucker & Dale vs. Evil) of Canada is scheduled to attend to shed light on his journey as an up-and-coming filmmaker.

Irv Broughton, noted documentarian of American writers, Instructor of film and creative writing at Spokane Falls Community College, and Senior Programmer with SpIFF, is scheduled to moderate.

February 12 / Saturday / 1:00 pm

Our second Forum emphasizes filmmaking in the Inland Northwest. Scheduled to attend are Don Hamilton of Hamilton Studios (The Big Sayonara), Adam Harum (Reel Spokane Winner Disintegration), and Danielle Barbieri (Lady Lily). Canada-based filmmakers Sara McIntyre (Two Indians Talking) and Nora Bateson (Ecology of Mind) will attend to share the stories behind their stories.

Marvin Smith, screenwriter and Professor of Theatre and Film at Eastern Washington, is scheduled to moderate.
