As the year winds down, the crew at Geek in the City Radio took a much needed vacation / in-service day to rest and plan the epic for 2012.

Personally, as I look back on the year and go through older projects, I keep coming back to The Adventures of the Crimson Mist. I know A.Z. got all the glory and headlines, but for me, it was Crimson Mist that stole my heart. My love for the pulp genre of superhero storytelling is well known and these 3 episodes were my attempt to emulate this era of high adventure.

If the day ever comes where we return to these audio dramas, it is Crimson Mist that will pull at me the hardest. (Sorry zombie fans).

My deepest thanks to everyone involved in these grand adventures. The list is too long. Thankfully, each episode ends in an all-new corrected credit sequence! (Hey, it was live radio, things happen).

The Muppets is a prime example of the ultimate fan film. Jason Segel takes a dying franchise and revives it back to glorious life.
When I say “dying” franchise, I am referring to how the Muppets were slowly losing the charm and fun that made them great all those years ago when “The Muppet Show” was on television every week back when I was a lad.

When the TV show finished, Jim Henson and crew made The Muppet Movie at the right time; the very height of the Muppets popularity. The innocence and joy that was The Muppet Show translated perfectly to the big screen with all the great cameos and each of the Muppet characters staying true to themselves.
As the years progressed each Muppet movie and TV special just seemed to lose me. Perhaps I was getting older and lost what boyhood love I had for the Muppets. Finally, on the sad day that Jim Hensen passed away, I was sure the Muppets would pass along with him. After the diminishing films such like Muppets From Space and Muppet Treasure Island I was all but certain tit was over

Now 22 years after the passing of Jim Hensen, and well into Disney owning the rights; I am so happy to say that the Muppets are back baby.
The Muppets is such a welcome return to the days of The Muppet Show and all the joy and entertainment that the Muppets brought to us all those many years ago. Jason Segel, who wrote and stars in “The Muppets”, takes what we all remember about the Muppets and brings it all to life on the big screen once again.

Mary (Amy Adams) and Gary (Jason Segel) are the most perfect cute little couple living in Smalltown USA, smack dab in the middle of America; they have been courting each other for ten years and for their ten year anniversary Gary wants to take Mary to Los Angeles for a fancy dinner.

Gary has a little brother, Walter. Walter is obsessed with The Muppets, he knows all the old “Muppet Show” episodes by heart, his room is covered in Muppet paraphernalia, and his dream is to one day see the Muppet Theatre. Gary and Walter are very close, so Gary surprises Walter with an opportunity to go with him and Mary to LA so his dream can come true.

Oh I forgot to mention…Walter is a Muppet.

Now I am not going to get too deep into spoiler territory here; I am just laying down the basic plot line.

Once in LA Walter, Mary and Gary find the old Muppet Theatre dilapidated and condemned. It’s a sad little tour down memory lane as Walter looks at Kermit’s old desk covered in cobwebs, pictures of past hosts such as Steve Martin and Bob Hope also covered in cobwebs adoring the walls.

Walter happens to be in the theatre when an oil tycoon named Tex Richman (dastardly portrayed by Chris Cooper) moseys on in to sign a contract to purchase and tear down the theatre so he can drill for oil underneath the theatre.

Walter pleads with Gary and Mary to help him find Kermit the Frog to make a desperate plea to get the band back together and put on a “Muppet Show Telethon” to raise enough money to save the theatre from Richman.

The rest of The Muppets is a journey to find the old gang and once again bring some much needed life back to the theatre but more importantly some much needed life into what once made the Muppets great.

And that is exactly what The Muppets does. I am not going to lie my fellow readers. I had a grin on my face a mile wide throughout this amazing movie. The singing (yes I know, I don’t like musicals), the hilarious cameos (I will give none away here, that’s part of the fun), Kermit, Fozzie, Gonzo and his Chickens, and even Sweetums. I loved loved loved every part of this movie.

I even was able to (finally) get over the fact that Kermit’s (and others) voices were not quite the same; and that’s taken me a long time to get over. I learned that the voices do not make the characters. It’s the love of these Muppets, it’s the message of nothing but pure entertainment. That is what I love about the Muppets; and that is what I love about this film.

The Muppets is full of surprises, I could go on and on about them all. But, that would take away from your experience, and that just wouldn’t be right.

So I leave you with this; get to the theatre cause it’s time to get things started on the most inspirational – celebrational – Muppetational this is what we call The Muppets.

‘Sabertooth Vampire’ & ‘La Brujeria’ unleash second issues at Bridge City Comics signing party Oct. 21

In the new issue, Golden Bought Pawn takes a job under Portland’s streets as mystical powers rise to shake the city to its foundations. See why Mark L. Meanwhile, Mike Russell signs “Sabertooth Vampire Unleashed,” which collects Season Two of Russell’s webcomic ( http://www.sabertoothvampire.com ) about a tiny vampire hampered by his oversized fangs. Will he pull his teeth out of the ground long enough to actually bite someone? Probably not. Over 56 pages, Season Two frequently contradicts itself as Russell dives into the Saber-Vamp’s personal life — his awkward teenage years, his stints as King Arthur and a caveman, his solo dance parties, and his awkward trip around the world after someone mistakes him for a garden gnome. Lauren Davis of io9.com called the comic “an amazing bit of silliness…. Yes, it’s a one-note joke, but damn if Russell doesn’t milk it for all it’s worth.”

Jason Momoa. He isn’t bad. This is nowhere near the performance we saw from him as Khal Drogo, but the potential is there. I think maybe Jason does best when he doesn’t have to speak any English. His decrees in Dothraki carried far more emotional impact than when he gives a line or two in the common tongue. There are a few instances when we see the Conan we all want, but it has more to do with the tone of the moment and less so about the actor. I mean, when Conan commands “Woman. Come here.” it just works. Although I’m pretty sure anyone could grunt that out effectively when covered in the gore of your vanquished foes. He’s still a little too pretty for my taste, but I think that’s more attributed to modern filmmaking than the actor. Next time (and I think there will be a next time) let Jason get a little dirty and scruffy. He’s playing THE barbarian, not a runway model version.

Momoa and Perlman are really the only actors trying to sell their roles. Momoa, because his hungry and this is the perfect time for him to make a run at being an honest movie star. Perlman because, well, he’s freaking Ron Perlman and even when he phones it in, you love the guy. (Side note, after taking an informal post screener poll. Other Conan fans, fellow critics, and I would watch a King Conan flick starring an aged Perlman in a heartbeat. Get on that). Stephen Lang as the villainous Khalar “Don’t Call Me Thulsa” Zym is just your baddy of the week stuff. He’s still leaps and bounds better than his wanna-be incestuous daughter Marique played by Rose McGowan. I might get that tingly feeling when I see her in Charmed reruns, but to say she can act is a stretch. Rachel Nichols rounds out the main cast as the pure-chosen-holy-strong-victim-love-goal-monk chick that everyone wants to bed in one way or another. She’s just there to drive the plot and give Conan a reason to, well, I say kill or lay, but he doesn’t really need a reason for that. He’s Conan. I’ll give Rachel this, I didn’t want to poke out my ears every time she spoke. You listening Rose? If you can’t do an accent, don’t.

Okay, so I’m really harping on the flick. Truth be told, there were quite a few times when I found myself whopping and hollering at the screen. During the first half of the flick, Nispel really embraced the full-frontal carnage and violence inherent in Conan. He set the camera back a few extra feet, ramped up the gore, and let the fight scenes play. The first half of this movie has some really great moments. Hell, the damn thing opens with a sword literally birthing Conan from his mother’s womb… That we see from inside dear old mom! I mean, come on, when you set the stage with that bit of insanity, you better keep up the pace. Alas, something happens right about the time Conan launches a henchman with a Trebuchet into the battleship drawn by elephants that everything goes to cinematic hell.

Yes. You read that line correctly. Conan shoots a man into the sky with a Trebuchet to deliver a message. A message to a man riding inside a freaking wooden battleship carried by ever-loving’ elephants!

Baby sliced out of mom on the field of battle! Elephants carrying battleships!! Ron Perlman!!! Everything we’d ever want.

Until they ran out of money and realized they still had 40 minutes of movie to make. And that pesky end boss battle. From there the fun just goes away. Sure, there is still plenty of killing. Most of which isn’t even necessary for the story, other than watching Conan kill. (Which is a legitimate reason in a Conan flick, I’ll give you that). But, the fight scenes go from open and free-flowing to a couple of folks flaying about. All while the camera crew zooms in tight and shakes the crap out of the lens as if 5-Hour Energy flows through their veins instead of blood. The movie just gets lazy. Scenes you know where meant to involve massive beasts, turn into 2nd unit dueling shots from Pirates of the Caribbean.

In all honesty, this Conan the Barbarian really wants to be a good movie. Alas, wanting and doing are two wholly different things. The seed of potential is sitting there. It just got lost under a mountain of dismembered bodies and CGI blood.

Oh yeah…

Relax, this won’t be some Captain Flame Arms rant.

A little background. Womanthology is a wonderful concept put together by Renae De Liz; being a platform where non published female creators from all over the globe can work with published female creators and produce a complete graphic novel. Knowing there isn’t a whole lot of money in comics, Renae turned to Kickstarter and put together a campaign to generate production funds. They were initially seeking $25,000 to cover production costs and ease some of the burden on IDW Publishing.

To say the comic community responded positively is a huge flarking understatement.

By the end of the Kickstarter campaign, Womanthology raised $109,301!

There was much rejoicing and celebrating by the women involved and by fans of the comic book medium. The final donation amount is truly a stunning accomplishment. As of this posting, it’s the 25th most successful Kickstarter campaign ever, and the single best comic book campaign. That right there is something to be proud of, for all those involved and those that supported the book. Comics are going through some rough times right now and to see something this positive was inspiring.

Of course, this is 2011. Nothing is ever crystal clear and the ability to spread information (and disinformation) in an instant kicked in.

“You guys raised all this money, when am I getting paid?”

Before the people involved even has a chance to read and reply, Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr accounts gathered the pitchforks and lit the torches. Hell, I found out 10 minutes before sitting down to record our weekly podcast, Geek in the City Radio. Readers, listeners, and some Womanthology contributors were asking if I was going to call out Renae and everyone involved for “taking advantage” of their work.

Well. No.

For all my rambling and deserved reputation of having a big ass mouth, I try not to comment on events without looking for more information. I did what I had hoped those throwing accusations had done.

I talked to some published writers and artists working on the book.

I asked the women making the book.

The news was partially correct. Contributors are not receiving any form of financial compensation. A fact everyone was made aware of when they agreed to take part in the project. This lack of compensation isn’t limited to the non published contributors. No one involved in Womanthology is receiving payment for their work. That includes Renae De Liz, the architect of the book. That includes Laura Morley, the admin for the project. That includes the seasoned professionals that want to see the book succeed. No one is getting paid. And, from reviewing multiple sources and talking with multiple women involved, everyone knew they weren’t getting paid.

But they only needed $25,000, aren’t the women submitting work deserving of that extra $75,000?

No.

Okay, maybe that isn’t fair. Yes, everyone deserves fair compensation for their hard work. However, everyone knew going in that they were doing this work for exposure and experience alone. That any and all profit garnered from Womanthology was going to the Global Giving Foundation charity. Some contributors were upset that they weren’t going to receive a complimentary copy of Womanthology once the book hit shelves. Again, from information gathered, that was also not part of the deal struck between creators and those behind the book. That isn’t all that surprising, I know people that write for the Big Two and even they have to pay for their own book. Womanthology has since said that book contributors will receive a complimentary copy of the book and are free to use it as they wish. Complimentary copies that will eat into the money raised on Kickstarter. For anyone still thinking, “come on Aaron, they raised over 100 thousand dollars, they can kick back some money to the ladies providing content.” Here is an estimated breakdown of that 100 grand from the Womanthology blog:

$109,000 Kickstarter Final

$6,000 Kickstarter “errors” such as bad card numbers, faulty pledges
$9,000 Fees (Kickstarter is %5, Amazon takes another %3 – %5)
$40,000 Printing for around 5,5000 Womanthology books (may change)
$20,000 Postage for 2,000 books (overestimate labor, postage is at least $5 a book/ may change)
$3,000 Printing/postage of 1000 Sketchbooks
$2,000 Postage of other rewards
$20,000 Taxes, for me, a self employed person, overestimate, may change

That alone is around $100,000 of the $109,000. But because of overestimating, I am guessing there may be $20,000 left over, if there are no refunds, or extra fees.

The original target print run of this book was only 1,500 books. That’s just about enough to cover the people that donated to the Kickstarter project thus earning a book, and maybe 1 or 2 copies for US comic book shops. Now they can produce more. Now they can get books into schools, into libraries.

Into the hands of the contributors.

I totally understand wanting your perceived fair cut of the pie when you see huge numbers like $109,301. Except no one was promised financial compensation, regardless of how successful the Kickstarter campaign turned out. Remember, if they hadn’t hit their goal, Kickstarter would have kept the whole dang thing. (EDIT – That isn’t true. The project simply would not have happened. Sorry for the error – AD). Maybe the people involved in Womanthology could have written a clause that allowed for payment should the campaign reach a certain level. They didn’t. They still aren’t making a dime off this endeavor either. Since the beginning Womanthology has been about showcasing wonderful new talent, and I think they’ve been pretty transparent in their attempt. Both creatively and financially.

Breaking into comics is hard. It is quite possibly one of the hardest of the creative industries to break into. Having the opportunity to present your work, if only a single page among hundreds, is wonderful. Hell, it’s one I wish I had a chance to participate in. I know this makes me sound like your grumpy grandpa, but be happy for what you’ll soon have…

That being the opportunity to work with, and learn from, some of the most successful female comic book writers and artists in the world.

Having the privilege to present your work to thousands of people from all over the world.

Even better?

You’ll have the opportunity to inspire a whole new generation of girls and boys to write, draw, and tell their own story.

Which brings us back to Renae’s original idea and the very reason behind Womanthology

If you ask me, not a bad deal.

Where to begin, right? Well, if I’m being honest, the very first thought that popped into my mind was “Damn, I love me some Mike Allred art”. Any messages aside, the commercial looks fantastic. His lines are deceptively simple and you’d be hard pressed to find an artist that draws a more elegantly powerful Wonder Woman. Then I started thinking about the message. Women can’t be beautiful unless they drench their face in powders and oils like so much dried turkey in a gravy bowl. Only Wonder Woman, in her fully painted ways, can save the poor Plain Janes of the world. She bests the vile Medusa, a savvy villain choice from a mythical stance, when you consider Medusa is her one villain that can never benefit from make-up. (Being the love and attention from others when they gaze upon her). The Plain Janes are again free go out and earn attention from their adoring fans. The commercial isn’t offensive to Wonder Woman as such. It isn’t Wonder Woman’s fault. First, we need to remember she isn’t real. True, she’s a symbol of power and independence to so many women and yes, men as well. But, she’s still an imaginary character and maybe it isn’t a good idea to imprint so many of our own desires and self-worth on a fictional character. That isn’t to say a work of fiction or a character can’t inspire one to better themselves and others. Indeed, that’s a driving goal of many creative endeavors. But only as a spring board. Something you can start from, not end at. The MAC commercial points to deeper issues within our youth and beauty obsessed culture. That’s a topic for more educated commentators to discuss. This is all about Wonder Woman.

The one owned by DC Comics and in turn, owned by Warner Brothers. I know it sucks, but Wonder Woman isn’t ours. She isn’t owned by the various writers and artists that told her tales. Hell, she isn’t even owned by William Moulton Marston anymore. Wonder Woman, just like Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, and all the other underwear on the outside crowd are a corporate commodity. Harsh? Sure, but that is the reality. The MAC commercial is no different than Batman and the Joker pushing Hostess Fruit Pies in the 70s and 80s. “Oh Joker, you may be a homicidal maniac, but you sure know a tasty Boysenberry Pie. I can’t fault ya’ chum. Lets eat”! Belly laughs and diabetes for all. If only Barbara Gordon had some Suzy-Qs on hand, the ‘ol Clown Prince of Crime might have thought twice before blowing her through the spine. Okay, so maybe you think the self-worth of millions of women isn’t the same as a pushing some trashy snacks. Well, not to a cosmetics corporation or advertising company. They have a product to sell. DC and Warner Brothers have a character to promote. Both want to make money doing it. In that regard, whether you agree with the commercial or not, the spot worked. We’re all chatting about MAC products and DC gets to keep Wonder Woman high atop the cultural zeitgeist.

Personally, I don’t buy into the message behind the commercial. Plain Janes don’t need any saving from the terrors of, well, plainness. Do or don’t use MAC’s products or any cosmetics I suppose. If your entire self-worth is based about the opinion and demands of others, that points to deeper issues that a site that writes about comic books and Lightsabers can’t help you with. This is about Wonder Woman. It always has been. She’s a founding member of the Justice League of America. She’s a cunning warrior. She’s a loving caregiver. She’s an inspiration to many. She’s a leader. She’s a diplomat. She’s beautiful. She’s frail. She’s strong. And now, she’s a spokeswoman. Pretty sure she can do it.

After all, she is Wonder Woman.

We at GeekintheCity are starting to sound like a broken record, it doesn’t matter. We’re still smarting from the painful lack of a one Mr. Brian Blessed. Alas, the Frost Giants are still coming and us Asgardians must press on. Everything looks right on this one, even if you don’t like the idea of Thor and his crew being aliens. It looks cool. Still not fully sold on the story. However, Kenneth Branagh directing a flick with flying hammers, rainbow bridges, and mighty beards? Glory!

The only non-superhero flick on this list. Cowboys and Aliens might be the adaptation we’re most excited to watch. Readers have been passing this book around for years and it’s good to see it make the transition to film. Burned on his experience in Iron Man 2, it looks like Jon Favreau is having fun again; and even more impressive, he made Harrison Ford look human. Now if we could only get audiences to stop laughing at the title. Trust us, Cowboys and Aliens isn’t the joke flick the title suggests. This is the one that will tank instantly, or be the steady performer that sticks around for months.

Hard to judge a movie by one 30 second teaser. Still, for this friendly neighborhood Geek, Chris Evans is slowly eroding the doubts. The visuals look nice. Good diluted colors, which one needs with a character that charges into battle wearing the Red, White, and Blue. Staging Captain America in World War II is a smart choice and will give us viewers the perfect balance of pulp action we’re looking for. Now bring on the Red Skull focused trailer!

This is not easy to write. But you know what? This isn’t a good trailer. It’s actively working against my desire to watch the movie. Remember, this is coming from a dork with two, count them two, Green Lantern tattoos! Come on Warner Brothers, you need to knock it out of the park with ‘ol Hal and the rest of the Corps. For the first time in forever, GL is an a-list character within the DCU. Don’t friggen ruin it with your creepy muscle costumes and over stuffed plot.

MIKE LARREMORE’S “FORGOTTEN IN THE FACE OF CRISIS” DOCUMENTS HAITI MEDICAL RELIEF ONE MONTH AFTER EARTHQUAKE
Last year young photographer Mike Larremore travelled to a disaster-struck Haiti a scant month after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the small country. Working in partnership with United States and international teams, Mike took thousands of photographs documenting the medical relief work in Port au Prince, Haiti from February 19th to March 1st, 2010. Rather than focus on carnage and rubble, he photographed the courage and strength present in the Haitian people. Now in honour of the one-year anniversary, sixteen of these images will be on display at Sequential Art Gallery through the month of February. His images show the never-ending hard work of the medical teams and illuminates a side of Haiti perhaps forgotten in the face of crisis. Opening reception will be First Thursday February 3, from 6-10pm.
Mike Larremore is a professional photographer living in Portland, Oregon. His career began while living in Europe, shooting portraits and street scenes in Florence, Italy. He attributes his success to help from mentors, colleagues, and self-taught techniques. When home, Mike shoots commercial fashion and portraiture for agencies, press, and for local businesses. The comic follows Ivy, a teenage girl raised by a single mother in a small coastal town in Maine, longs to leave her home and achieve her dream of becoming a painter. Unfortunately, daily life doesn’t run smoothly for someone whose anger often gets the better of her, and who makes enemies more easily than friends. But when Ivy begins a long-distance relationship with a kindred spirit, she gets a glimpse of freedom and acceptance too good to pass up. Only while trying to escape her troubles does she start to realize that while she can leave home, she can’t run away from herself.
Sarah Oleksyk is a Russ Manning award-nominated cartoonist and creator of multiple critically-acclaimed mini-comics. Ivy is her first full-length graphic novel.

Here, Photos! features her friends’ preparation for The Brides of March, an annual costumed event with the Cacophony Society. Following a press release issued today, Wizard magazine, the self-declared standard of the comic book industry is no more. Zip. Gone. All staff let go, all freelance contracts canceled. To which I can only respond, Michael Bluth style, “her?”. Apart from collectors and completists, aka people that still buy the Overstreet Price Guide, Wizard magazine has been the after thought of the comic fan for many years now. While it sucks for anyone to lose their job in this tired ass economy, the folks at Wizard had to see this coming for miles. Twenty years ago, Wizard magazine served an important purpose. First, it was an often referenced if highly suspect price guide for speculation comic buyers and sellers. Indeed, one could argue Wizard helped fueled the false collectors market that damn near killed the industry om the mid to late 1990s.

Not that I’m bashing on the now defunct magazine for their actions. The publishers saw an opportunity from money-hungry collectors that missed the Cabbage Patch Kids wave and took it. Second, Wizard magazine was the only real source for us comic book fans to see our favorite characters as they made the transition to screen and/or video games. It was also the only way we could read about our favorite writers, artists, and was an insight into an industry we all loved. Or, at the very least, were curious about. Be honest, when Marvel Comics allowed Wizard an all-access tour of their studio, it was the coolest friggen article ever! I mean, that was were Spider-Man cam from. How could we not love it? And we did.

But that was 20 years ago.

Like so many other facets of the publishing industry, Wizard magazine is simply redundant. With real-time news from sites like IGN, Comic Book Resources, and Newsarama; and comic commentary sites like iFanboy or Comics Alliance, a magazine like Wizard just isn’t necessary. Short of the random exclusive article or image (which would often hit the Internet hours before the issue landed on the stands), there simply isn’t a point to Wizard magazine. No longer valid as a price guide, Wizard seemed to solely exist as a 65 page ad for comic book companies… That you paid $5.99 a month to read. Going to 100% online content, perhaps Wizards is just another portion of the ever-changing landscape that is the comic book industry. And yet I can’t help shake the feeling that, unlike their debut in 1991, Wizard magazine online is too little too late.

Just glad one of my professional comic goals is first comic book writer asked to drive in a reasonably priced car, not make the cover of Wizard magazine.

Saturday January 1st at the Hollywood Theatre, The Grindhouse Film Festival presents THE NEW YEAR’S DAY GRINDHOUSE MOVIE MARATHON! 3:30 pm – MASTER OF THE FLYING GUILLOTINE (1975) The ultra-weird martial arts masterpiece!  A blind assassin armed with a vicious flying guillotine is out to kill the legendary one-armed boxer (martial arts superstar Jimmy Wang Yu).  Along the way, he interrupts a bizarre kung fu tournament and heads start to roll.  It’s up to the one-armed boxer now, with his skull shattering punch and his ability to walk on walls.  Eagle claw masters, a monkey style fight, and a Swami fighter with ten foot arms are just stepping stones to the massive showdown with the flying guillotine.  Filmed in Super Cine-Vision!

5:30 pm – GATES OF HELL (1980) A surreal Italian gutmuncher from gore-maestro Lucio Fulci!  A priest commits suicide and unwittingly opens the gateway to hell.  The rotting dead rise from their graves to feed on the living in gruesome fashion, while a psychic and a journalist attempt to stop the rancid carnage.  This is Lucio Fulci at his finest, so forget about the “plot” and prepare yourself for zombie killing, head drilling, and intestine spilling!  Powered by Fabio Frizzi’s creepy soundtrack and top notch special effects.

7:30 pm – LADY TERMINATOR (1988) A beautiful woman is possessed by an ancient mystical queen out for vengeance, turning her into an unstoppable killing machine! She takes off on a rampage across Indonesia, gunning down anyone who gets in her way, and blowing apart half of the country. She also sports a mean leather jacket… except when she’s naked… which is a lot. But for those foolish enough to try to put their hands on her, she also castrates men with an eel that lives in her vagina. Bullet-riddled disco shootouts, mind-boggling dialogue, a mullet-headed cop who drives a tank, and so much more. All in full-throttle ’80s excess!

With only a few hours left in the year 2010, your friendly neighborhood Geek didn’t want the last 365 days to pass without some random observations on the industry he loves so much. Other more reputable sites will cover real events, best issues, best art. Blah, blah, blah. These are the 10 events you truly need to remember. So, without further ado…

The Event We All Forgot About in 2010 - DC Comics resurrects The Spirit and Doc Savage (and some Batman to help sales, of course) with First Wave. An attempt to bring back the classic pulp era, First Wave was gonna be a return to old school heroics. Alas, it was no return at all. It was just the same old delayed books, tired stories, and freakishly decompressed storytelling. Look, I love me some Brian Azzarello. However, when you want to tell high action and adventure pulp; you don’t get the guy that wrote 100 Bullets. Homeboy likes to take his time. The Spirit and Doc Savage don’t.

Worst Kept Secret in Comics - DC moving to California. Seriously, this secret had more holes than a program guide at an AVN Convention written by Wikileaks. Sadly, it seemed the only people that didn’t see it coming were the folks DC let go during the restructure. 2011 will show if the move actually helps to keep their titles in the Top 10 without an undead Lantern on the cover.

The Best Title to Come Out of The Heroic Age - Atlas from Jeff Parker and Gabriel Hardman. After going through years of darkness and war, Marvel was ready to return to good ‘ol superhero fun. Indeed, Atlas delivered on everything First Wave promised over at DC. It was weird. It was exciting. It had talking gorillas, Atlanteans, killer robots, and dueling dragons. In short order, the book was friggen glorious to read each month. Well, for all five of them. Critical acclaim couldn’t help a series that didn’t quite make Marvel’s cut-off numbers. Although sad to see it go, it was nice to see Atlas go out on their own and not dive into a cross over event to land a few extra issues. (The suck that is Curse of the Mutants, looking at you).

Worst Thing in Comics in 2010 That Wasn’t Deadpool Corps or Power Girl after Issue 12 - You. Me. Us. The readers. We’re starting to sound like a broken record. “No new stories.” “Ugh, another Batman title.” “How many time are they gonna’ kill him?” “You guys have all these characters, why are you using Wolverine again?” Listen, you can’t complain about nothing new on the shelves and then let good books die on the vine because you don’t want to add more titles. Look, I get it. Money be tight. Fine. Then take a long hard look at titles you’re reading out of sheer loyalty. (I’m looking at you, the readers of any DC book with the word Justice in the title). If a title isn’t good, don’t buy it! Take a chance on the quirky title or lesser known characters. As a rule, companies give these titles to their up and coming talent. Many gems never get past the 5th or 6th issue because it doesn’t star Iron Man or Green Lantern.

Biggest Travesty in Comics That Wasn’t the Jonah Hex Movie – Canceling Thor: The Mighty Avenger. What happened? Reread the post above. Seriously, this was one of the best titles in comics this year. Shame on anyone that didn’t read it. To those that did, you’re a better person for doing so.

Best One-Shot Book of 2010 - Hellboy & Beasts of Burden. Mixing two of Dark Horses’ greatest worlds was a literary Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. Written by Evan Dorkin and gorgeous art by Jill Thompson, Hellboy and Beasts of Burden was exactly how you have a crossover. Packed with action, danger, and no small amount of drama, Hellboy and Beasts of Burden showed just how much storytelling can happen in 23 pages. Pugs and the Right Hand of Doom. How can one go wrong?!

Best Comics Website That Isn’t This One - We might get called out on this one, but it matters not. The best comic book commentary site, bar none, is Comics Alliance! Comic Book Resources, Newsarama, and that one section over on IGN; each one of them feels like a promotional arm of Marvel or DC. Comics Alliance is the only site that delves into true commentary on the industry. In an era of “first syndrome” comic book reviews, Comics Alliance takes their time and truly delves into book reviews. Breaking down characters, plots, and what’s going on behind the scenes, Comics Alliance is the site you simply must read. Once you’re done here of course!

The Grant Morrison Book You Should Have Read - Joe the Barbarian. Forget all his time jumping Batman, test-tube assassin Robin, creepy Pyg killers, and words-as-bullets.
