Kino London's Open-mic Film Night

Start: 09/23/2009 - 19:00

End: 09/23/2009 - 23:00

Kino #9 is taking place on 23rd September at Vibe Bar in Brick Lane. The only film night of it's kind in London. A true open screen for the capital's filmmakers.

How it works:
For those new to Kino, there's no pre-selection - filmmakers book themselves in on a 'first-come first-served' basis. You then turn up with your film on the night, ready to pop into the player!

Follow their rules for a pleasant screening:

- films must feature Kino London logo + screening number (9) at the end
- films must be under 6 minutes
- films must be presented on DVD

The night also features free popcorn and sushi. Alongside that, all filmmakers screening on the night will be entered into a prize draw to win a selection of filmy giveaways.

Want to screen?
If you want to screen at Kino #9 email submissions co-ordinator Laura at: screen@kinolondon.com

Live act:
Faith Millin and Alejandro Patten are a London duo playing a satisfying mix of blues, rockabilly and country while filled to the brim with washboard, kazoo, harmonica and harmonies. One way of achieving the most noise possible with only two pairs of hands, huh?!

_

To screen: screen@kinolondon.com
For logistics and filmmaking support: sam@kinolondon.com
Rage Premiere & Q&A with Director Sally Porter

Start: 09/24/2009 - 08:30

End: 09/24/2009 - 23:00

Using a radical narrative structure focused entirely on individual performances, Rage consists of a dynamic series of interviews, as if shot by a schoolboy on his mobile phone. He goes behind the scenes at a New York fashion show during a week in which a catwalk accident turns into a murder investigation. Fourteen actors, both celebrated stars and emerging talents, play characters who each have a role in the show, from the designer (Simon Abkarian) and his models (Lily Cole and Jude Law), the fashion critic (Judi Dench) and photographer (Steve Buscemi), to the fashion-house financier (Eddie Izzard) and his bodyguard (John Leguizamo). The radical style of Rage is also embraced in its unique distribution strategy, which sees the film premiered on mobile platforms and internet alongside its digital screen and DVD release.

The live premiere at BFI Southbank will be linked interactively with digital screens around the country, with audiences everywhere able to participate in the onstage Q&A.

The Sky and Beyond - On the Trail of Dorothea Buck

Start: 09/22/2009 - 19:30

End: 09/22/2009 - 23:00

deutsh docs is a screening series of new German documentaries in London's Eastend.

The Sky and Beyond reflects on the remarkable life of the 92–year-old sculptor Dorothea Buck who cured herself from schizophrenia.

Born in 1917 she was overcome by a severe mental crisis at the age of nineteen. During the Third Reich, with the diagnosis of schizophrenia, she was declassified as a minor human being. According to Nazi race policies she was forcibly sterilized in 1936. A few years later she barely escaped “euthanasia”.
Contrary to all prognoses – incurable mental illness – Dorothea Buck tried to understand what drove her into psychosis and developed her own theory of her illness. That way she found the key to her own sanity.

Between 2001 and 2008, director Alexandra Pohlmeier was able to capture Dorothea Buck’s breathtaking story during regular visits to her home and studio in Hamburg and by traveling with her. Buck’s younger sister provides an outside view, reflecting on the dismay and helplessness most families experience when mental illness strikes in their midst. By accentuating the narrative, Dorothea Buck’s sculptures unfold an impressive body of work.

The Sky and Beyond is a film about the life and work of a courageous woman.
