Anyhow, I hope Waters puts out a DVD of the tour so I see what I missed...

New #2: I'm just back from Atlanta and a discussion re: Falling Skies with the great people at TNT. Cuts are coming in and the show is looking really cool. I love it when a plan comes together! Summer 2011!

New #3: More new comics from Steve Ditko, co-creator of Spider-Man. Ditko, at 82-ish, continues to produce idiosyncratic independent work, emphasis on the "idiosyncratic." He's also evidently working from some place in the future, since his latest title, "Act 6", is copyright 2011. After going through a stack of his most recent work, I'm curious how his creative process works... if he scripts these stories in advance of drawing, writes them as he goes along, or what. Either way, I continue to be impressed with Ditko's desire to produce his own work in his own way. Ordering info is available from Ditko's publisher Robin Snyder at RobinBrigit@comcast.com.

New #4: Dragnet Season 3 (1969) is out on DVD. All sentient humans should experience Dragnet at some point in their lives. I watched Dragnet religiously when it was a TV Land staple many years ago, so I have most of these episodes firmly locked in my frail synapse. But a reminder is always appreciated.



But for the real devotees, the best Dragnet product is finally out in an Amazon exclusive, the glorious full color movie from 1953. It really is THAT good.

THE WEIRD WORLD OF EERIE PUBLICATIONS, Feral Press. Eerie Publications were really mostly a guy named Myron Fass, an "ehh" comics artist from the 50's who turned his talents to publishing. Fass produced hundreds of crazy magazines, ranging from pop-culture (I still have his cheapo Tiger-Beatish Springsteen one shot from the 1970's), soft-core sex, supernatural/UFO and even semi-political magazines. But Fass is best known for his line of unbelievably grisly horror comics that appeared from 1967-ish into the early 1980's. Weird, Tales Of Voodoo, Witches Tales, Tales From The Tomb, etc., etc. About ten years ago I went on an eBay jag and picked up around 220 of the comics, and I always wanted to know more about this bizarre company. Well, author Mike Howlett gives me "more" and then some! At a mind-boggling 300 pages, many in color, this book spills the beans on the Eerie empire, and finally reveals the name of the best (nastiest) cover painter from the comics line: Bill Alexander.

THE PROMISE. For a Springsteen fanatic like yours truly, this is really something. A documentary on the making of Springsteen's "Darkness On The Edge Of Town" album, plus the remastered album itself, two CDs of outtakes, and two, count 'em, two concerts on blu-ray. Hardcore Bruce addicts have heard many of the outtake tracks on the "Promise" album, but not all, and certainly not in this quality. I'm still plowing through the contents, but this is an amazing set...

THE HORROR, THE HORROR. An impressive collection of full color 50's horror comics, the stuff that "inspired" Mr. Fass, with tons of commentary and even a DVD of an old television show decrying the effects of this nasty trash on the youth of America. (I haven't seen the DVD yet, but I assume they do not conclude the effect was positive.) Evidently the book's compiler and I share similar tastes because many of my favorite 50's covers are reproduced here, including the surreal painted covers by Ekgren, and work by Steve Ditko, Basil Wolverton and other greats. It is impressive just how sordid and nasty these stories could get.

DICK BRIEFER'S FRANKENSTEIN. Yet another swanky hardcover compilation, this time of Dick Briefer's cool and strange Frankenstein series from the 40's and 50's. It's an odd series that went from serious horror to the flat-out comedic adventures of the monster, and back again. I always wondered how the monster's nose ended up in the middle of his forehead (maybe Dr. F. lost his glasses)... not sure we learn the answer here, but I've always enjoyed these oddball books.

Demons don't much like pool cleaning equipment.

The 15th time you cut to a static shot of a doorway, something is just bound to happen.

When trying to win back the first born male child of a couple who benefited from a deal with the devil, evidently the smart move is to throw the automatic pool cleaner out of the swimming pool every night for two weeks (see above) and repeatedly make a mess in the couple's kitchen.

If that doesn't work, thumping and bumping at odd hours is equally effective at communicating your dark desires.

When people don't interpret this demonic outreach properly, boy can those demons get pissy.

When you come home to find your live-in Hispanic maid trying to rid your home of evil spirits, that's not a good sign.

Evidently it is impossible for a couple to take their toddler with them when they go out to dinner.

If you have security cameras running 24/7, the last thing you want to do is check them after someone claims to have experienced a supernatural event in your home.

If you do check them, make sure you only find the supernatural events that could have a plausible real world explanation. Do not check the tapes that would show babies levitating.

Seriously, what is the deal with demons and swimming pool cleaners?

There is no business deal so important that you should leave your catatonic wife and terrified daughter alone, even if it's just for a "couple of hours."

Oh, wait. You own a string of Burger King franchises. Strike the above, of course you need to take the meeting.

You should always tidy up your basement before a supernatural onslaught. Boxes and spare bicycles are some scary shit in the dark.

We have been outspoken supporters of Filipino cinematographer and director Yam Laranas here at Twitch, first encountering him with his chilling ghost story Sigaw and following all of his subsequent work closely. So when Laranas emailed yesterday to ask if Twitch wanted to premiere his new, three minute long short film the answer was obviously yes.

Shot entirely on an iPhone 4 - the second time Laranas has put together a cell phone movie - the piece is titled I Think I'm Not Alone and you can check it out below.

We start shooting the finale episode of Falling Skies Season One (written by yours truly) in just a couple of days, so the train that is production left the station, careened across many hills and valleys, and now seems to be nearing its destination. I could belabor the train metaphor for a few more paragraphs, but that would require thought and frankly, I've still got work to do. So this is called "checking in" with a promise of fuller reporting once things settle down...

Z-rating: 9.5 out of 10 stars for being surprisingly creepy

[Note: I would suggest not watching a trailer and going into this movie not knowing what to expect]

One of the posters for this film calls this film the "much-awaited first Hollywood remake of a Pinoy blockbuster horror movie." What I really like about this remake is the fact that it's done by the same guy that directed the original four years earlier. (Sigaw, 2004) So not surprisingly, this is probably one of the better Hollywood remakes that you'll find out there.

Bobby Reynolds (played by Jesse Bradford) is released from prison and moves back into his mother's old apartment. While he was away, his mother went insane and locked herself in her apartment for weeks before starving to death. Bobby desperately tries to reconnect with people from his old life but everyone seems to just want to keep a safe distance. Everyone except his old flame, that is. All seems to be going well until Bobby realizes he's got a police officer living in the apartment next to his. What's worse, this cop seems like one of those assholes on a power trip who comes home and beats on his wife all day. As if that wasn't bad enough, he keeps hearing strange noises coming from the walls and hallways. Things start to get really weird when he starts seeing strange things to accompany those strange noises he's hearing. Bobby begins to think that his mother wasn't insane but that something just made her crazy.

I have to say that I am thoroughly impressed with this movie. The first half of the film is a bit of a slow burn but once this movie picks up, it is absolutely relentless with the scares. I hadn't heard of this movie before it came from Netflix so when I threw it on, having no idea what I was in store for. My first time watching this movie, I had it was just playing in the background while I was chatting with a buddy of mine. Every time I turned to watch the screen, something creepy was happening. I noticed that it didn't matter when I turned around, this movie seemed pretty consistently creepy throughout. So I sat down and gave this film a second viewing, in its entirety, and I have to say that this is one of the most effectively creepy and unrelenting films I've seen in a LONG time. There are a few jump scares in this movie but a lot of the good scares in this film are built up to. A great suspenseful, creepy, and atmospheric film.

Nudity: None

Gore: Minimal. There are a couple bloody scenes but, unlike yesterday's extremely violent recommendation, this one doesn't rely on shocking scenes or violence to scare you. This one is genuinely creepy and builds up the suspense slowly. I liked the fact that the bloody scenes were present in the film but were used sparingly and very effectively.

Awesome: Very. One of the best creepy movies I've seen in a very long time. I usually turn to more violent and gory movies for my entertainment because I find mainstream horror so dull that I need something more extreme to get my thrills. This movie was so atmospherically creepy though that the gore played second fiddle those creepy scenes that were set up earlier in the movie. (One of my favorite scenes involves a little girl, a piano, and a song that you hear throughout the film)

Hollywood has a knack for destroying brilliant horror films, so stick with the original.

For the curious, my episode is the one where the werewolf/vampire hybrid steals the Necronomicon eggs and pollutes the water supply of Cardiff with the ghost virus.

Some of that may be untrue.

But not all of it.

So we're making a new feature film called Art Machine, and we just started a Kickstarter campaign for the project. If you're unfamiliar with Kickstarter, it's this cool new tool for projects to use as a means of fundraising. Basically, you set up a project, set a certain monetary goal, and then ask everyone you know to get involved. Then ONLY if you reach your goal through individuals making contributions, does the donation go through, so it's pretty low risk for funders. Los Angeles-based Eleven Arts has taken over international sales duties on Patient X. The action-packed horror film from director Yam Laranas was released in the Philippines in October 2009. Sales were previously in the hands of XYZ Films, a US production, sales and finance outfit, which has now contracted the Ko Mori-headed (森浩太郎) Eleven Arts to bring in the money.

Patient X takes its title from the vampire-like female aswang - a mythical creature in Filipino folkore - who is captured and kept prisoner in the basement of a small town hospital. All hell breaks loose when a trio of zombie-like male aswang siege the hospital to secure her rescue, putting the lives of the other patients and the local police force at risk. The film marks the debut of RGutz Productions, founded by leading actor Richard Gutierrez, which produced the film in collaboration with industry heavyweights GMA Films and Viva Films. Laranas previously directed Sigaw, also starring Gutierrez, which he then remade in the US as The Echo for Roy Lee’s Vertigo Entertainment.

Yes. All the way to the Department Of Justice. That's where our research will take us for this new story I am so obsessing about. I am very optimistic that we will be able to dig up some real nuggets with the best research team that I worked with in my National Geographic Channel documentary.

This story rocks! And I think this will be my very first feature to be shot on the Red One digital motion picture camera and to be edited 4K native in our little "editing shop of horrors".

The story is pretty much done. It sort of wrote itself. It is not horror. It is a horrifying story. Based on real events.

It is very very dark.

The weirdness began at Bristol train station, when I spotted Kemp, or at least Donald Sumpter, the actor that plays him. I introduced myself and he revealed something of a history with Nottingham, (where I live) having performed at the Nottingham playhouse. He was a thoroughly nice man, which proves he's an actor and not evil.

Relax, I told myself. You're a professional. You're cool with this.

It turned out that several more actors were due to arrive by train, at which point they would all be ferried onto the read through in a mini van thoughtfully provided by Touchpaper. By chance there was a spare seat for me.

Now I am not by nature a superstitious person. Nor am I one of these writers that believes that I create people as I type, breathing life into my creations by will alone. I understand that these people are simply actors, paid to pretend, in the same way that I am a writer, paid to make things up.

But here's the thing: I soon found myself sharing a mini van full of actors, playing characters I had been thinking about and inventing words for, pretty much constantly, for the past three months. For them it was no big deal, some of them knew one another – there was gossip to catch up on, old jokes to revisit. For me, however, it was like travelling along in my own head.

There was Sam (Lucy Gaskell) who's romance with George I had kindled, there was Sykes (Brain Dick), whose first words on screen I had invented, and there was Lucy (Lyndsey Marshal), who I had written a nice little flirty scene for with Mitchell. I felt like leaping to my feet and screaming “I gave you life, do you hear me? Life!” and then leaping out of the window into the road. But I didn't.

Directly in front of me, in the passenger seat, sat Paul Rhys, the actor who plays Ivan. Now his character is dangerous, unpredictable and scary. The actor himself, however, is a thoroughly nice chap, who also professed a Nottingham connection, having lived in outlying villages as a child. He turned around in his seat and spoke to me during the journey. But between us was a head rest, one of those square padded ones, like a hoop with a hole in the centre. And he was talking to me through the hole. At any one time, I could see his eye, his nose or his mouth. But never all three at the same time.

And part of my brain was making conversation and sharing knowledge of Nottingham. Chatty. Light hearted. Professional.

And another part of my brain was going: “Oh my God. It's Ivan. He's talking to me through the back of a chair.

And he knows where I live.”

Ten for Grandpa has gotten into 19 film festivals since January, winning a Special Jury Prize at Aspen ShortsFest. I just got back from the Los Angeles Film Festival, where the film played to very receptive audiences, and I had a ton of meetings about our latest project, my fourth feature screenplay, Dwelling. A major star recently signed on in one of the lead roles and as the executive produce the film, and we'll be beginning production next June. In the meantime, we're starting to raise the financing and package the film with other other major screen talents. So it looks like I'm finally barreling into production (at a very controlled pace) on my feature directorial debut. Better start downing the vitamins, and taking better care of myself...

As a research tool for one of the characters in Dwelling, I recently bought a medium format Yashica from the 70's and have been shooting a ton ever since. A bunch of my photos are now up at: dougkarr.com

Apart from that, we're also continuing to developing a bunch of TV series, documentary projects, and three other feature films so stay tuned...

Hotwire began life as a Warren Ellis outline, which Steve Pugh wrestled into life, doing pretty much everything else. I've met Steve and he's a lovely bloke. His site can be found here, with some pix of Hotwire.

The premise in a nutshell is a world where spirits can no longer cross over and hang around, like ectoplasmic pollution. The titular Hotwire is a police exorcist with an ass kicking attitude and a spiked blonde crop.

It's so far up my alley I'll need a doctor to get it out again. And odd – I have a shelf full of Warren Ellis stuff, have a bit of Steve Pugh, and hope one day to branch into comics, yet here I am, interpreting one of their nuggets into another form. Odd the way the business works. And very, very cool.
