I have 9 tips on how to declutter paper in our homes and offices:

1. Create a filing system that works for you. I use freedom Filer that is based on placing everything in color coded categories. The first step is to gather up all your lose papers. Sort through every piece even though you might think you know what is in that stack"a bond or some other important piece of paper could be hiding.

Create a system to handle your mail by finding a home for your mail. This could be a basket, bowl, shoe box etc. someplace that you always place your mail so you know where it is and where to go when your ready to sort through it.

3. Do you wonder how long to keep papers? Utility bills only keep one month until you get your next bill and verify you have received credit for payment. If you can prove two different ways that you have paid the bill you dont have to keep it past one month. The exception to this is if you want to compare last years bill to the current year. After you have done this, recycle, shred or trash them.

Anything that has to do with taxes put with the tax papers, dont keep in separate folders.

Keep your will, birth and death certificates, marriage licenses, adoption papers, military records, citizenship papers, power of attorney and copies of your 401D accounts along with the names of your beneficiaries, property titles, deeds and mortgages forever"to name a few.

Go to IRS.gov for information related to how long to keep tax records. They are usually to be kept for at least 7 years.

4. Use your computer for filing instead of printing off everything you receive. Keep the information in a folder on your computer. If you need to print it out you can do so if and when the need arises.

5. Pay your bills on line. Sign up for electronic bill pay and notify the company to send your bills via the internet.

6. Get your name off junk mail lists. Go to Google and search junk mail for several places you can sign up to get off lists. This will really help you organize clutter as youll have a lot less junk mail to organize.

7. Handle each piece of paper only once. Make a decision at the time you first pick up the paper and act on that decision.

8. Declutter paperwork by canceling magazine and newspaper subscriptions you dont read. How to declutter magazines that are stacking up around your home is to go through them every three months and recycle them even if you havent read them, you can always find the information online.

9. Keep your inbox under control. Dont let it overflow with papers that need filing. File on a regular basis so paper work doesnt take over your life.

By taking care of paper that comes into your home a little at a time can free you up to do what you want to do and will help you declutter your home and life before it becomes a burden to you.

Kiss has been known as much for their bizarre campy theatrics as for their music and some might argue more so. You are doing exceptionally well in your endeavor to ensure that potential clients stay on your page for 15 seconds, leave and never come back again.  We also warn our friends and family about people like you.  While we can be quite irritated, be assured that we don’t hate you personally.  We may think that someone who embeds music or, worse, “beautiful sounds” on their website is malevolently inclined towards those who are seeking to buy or sell a home, is tone-deaf and quite possibly does not consult their clients’ comfort as much as they ought, but we don’t hate YOU.

We hate your music.  The notes that fall so sweetly to your ears are an aural hell for those of us who do not share your appreciation for Barry Manilow, Bach or AC/DC.  No, having a rock song tinkled out on an embedded MIDI player does not make you cool.  We loathe the “sounds of spring” or “softly falling water” that you delude yourself creates a “peaceful atmosphere”.  We despise bells, whistles, sirens, clicks and any other noise that you hope draws our attention to your featured listings or your contact page. 

You also may not realize that while the intent is recognizable, the song or sound is not.  Your “babbling brook” actually sounds like the static of the TV when you’ve accidentally punched channel 0 instead of channel 10.  Your glorious electronic rendition of Beethoven’s “The Pastoral” brings to mind the last time we were forced to go to Little Timmy’s talent show where three misguided youngsters tried to saw through their violins with catgut and didn’t stop for 15 minutes.  And you… YOU brought it all back again.

And not only did you bring it back, you brought it back at 150 decibels, which made it sound roughly like a jet engine roaring to life right beside our computer.  In addition to the hearing loss brought around by an unanticipated explosion of sound, whatever we were listening to was completely drowned out by your need that we thrill to the notes of “You’re the Light of My Life” and continued to be drowned out until we found the button that shut your miscreation of the Internet down.

Is it any wonder why you’re not getting any leads?  If your goal is to specialize in homes for the hearing impaired, you have found your calling and the ultimate method of screening your clients.  Because as soon as the first tortured screech of the harpies you fondly believe are “birds twittering in the twilight”, we frantically shot our cursor to the little X at the top corner of the screen and clicked onetwothreefourfivesixseveneight times to ensure that the abomination was killed.

In the process, we also inadvertently shut down several projects we were working on without saving them.  But it was worth it.  It also explains why, after turning the sound completely off, we will not be coming back.  Irritation can do that to people and if you’re irritating us before you’ve even emailed or spoken to us, well we don’t want to know what travesties you can accomplish in our actual presence.

We will not be coming back.  Ever.  Your page has all the charm of a pack of yipping Chihuahuas in the neighbor’s yard of the house we will now not be buying.  No matter how well laid out and beautifully colored your web page is, the annoying forced sound does not give us any inclination to stick around long enough to discover the many conveniences that you can offer.  There are plenty of real estate agents out there with beautifully laid out pages that are utterly silent.  As we peruse those blissfully quiet pages, it may well occur to us that this agent may also be efficient and non intrusive.  Perhaps we should give them a call.

I also think America is a country that allows you to be free. That, in fact, America was founded on the principle of freedom. But too many people here feel they aren't free. And it seems to me they are turning to the wrong places to be set free. They seem to the think the government will set them free or their spouse will set them free or society will set them free or their parents will set them free or their church will set them free. Here's the deal, people - only one person can set you free - and that person is you.

Let's talk about how.

First we have to determine in what ways you feel you are not free. So I'm going to list some things that may be impacting your freedom:

1.)You may feel you are not free because someone else is keeping you from doing what you want (spouse, parents, the law, etc.)

2.)You may feel you are not free because you don't have the money to do what you want or you have so many debts or other financial obligations you cannot do what you want.

3.) You may feel you are not free because of your race or your gender or your height or your age or your weight or any of another million possibilities based on your appearance or background

4.) You may feel you are not free because of addictions

5.) You may feel you are not free because of health issues

6.) You may feel you are not free because you have to work at a job you hate

7.) You may feel you are not free because you can't find a job

8.) You may feel you are not free because _____________________ (insert your own reason here)

I'm about to call BS on any reason you give me. I'm pretty sure that if you are reading this article you are not incarcerated. And even if you are, you can STILL use some of these tips to be freer! But if you are not behind bars or locked up in some crazy man's basement, and you live in the United States of American - you are free. To think otherwise is simply imprisoning yourself.

And that leads us to the first tip:

1.) You have to believe you are free. Do you know that many immigrants to the US do better than some people who are born here? The immigrants believe the US is the land of opportunity. They come here with nothing, only wanting the opportunity to build something - and they work their butts off. Too many people who are born here decide they aren't free, that someone or something is keeping them down. You know what? If you believe that - you will live that. You are as free as you believe yourself to be.

This doesn't just happen in the work realm. How about people who stay in abusive relationships believing they have no choice. As long as they believe they are trapped, they are.

Think you are not free? Ask yourself some questions: Can you leave your house and go down the street? Can you apply for a job? Can you make a phone call to a friend?

A big problem now is how many criminals have cell phones in prison. If they have cell phones, I'm finding it pretty hard to believe you can't do at least one of the above. And if you can any of the above, you are free. You might have other problems, but you are free.

If you believe you cannot be free, there is no need for you to read further.

2.) To be truly free (to be able to spend your life in your own way), you need to have a few things. Let's start with some source of income. You have to be able initially to provide for yourself, and eventually to have enough money to allow you to do what you want. To be free, you are going to have to get your financial house in order. First you have to get out of debt if you are in it. You aren't free if you owe money to somebody else. Sorry, gang, it is what it is.

Now, before you think I don't know what I'm talking about, I am debt free. Yep, I own my own house, I pay off my credit cards every month, my car is paid for. I don't owe anybody anything. How do you do this?

a.) Get a job. I know, right now unemployment is through the roof. But I also know people who are sitting at home not making a dime waiting until a job like the one they lost opens up. This ain't Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, people! Any job is better than no job! Sell all your fancy toys on Ebay! Do something! Money needs to be coming in.

b.) Live within your means. When I started my own business ten years ago, I lived in a small apartment. I didn't eat out. I bought only necessities. I was shocked at how cheaply I could live. Cable is NOT a necessity, people! If you are spending more money that you make, you will NEVER be free.

c.) Increase your value. What can you do to be more valuable? Read some books? Take a class at the community college? Work on your appearance? Revamp your attitude? Meet more people?

d.) Get financially literate. I'm amazed by people who don't understand basic financial principles. They don't realize that by only making the $15 minimum payment on their $6,000 credit card balance at 21% interest that they will never pay it off. These people seem to think if they have checks they have money. You need to understand the basics of your finances - ASAP. Parents - teach your kids.

e.) Your number one priority has to be to get out from under credit card debt. Paying those insane interest rates is going to kill you. Think you can't do it? Go back to tip number one.

f.) Don't make stupid expensive decisions. If you can't support yourself, don't have kids. I know, seems like a no-brainer. People rationalize this madness by saying things like, “Well there's no perfect time!” Yeah there is - when you have a job that can pay for food and diapers! Don't buy a new car if you don't have the money - drive the old one or take the bus. No public transport? Do you have neighbors? Friends? Offer to chip in on gas. Stop spending money you don't have!

g.) Don't make lots of stupid cheap decisions. Spend an extra $27.40 a day and you've spent $10,000 a year. $10,000!!!! Do you really need to stop at Starbucks? Can you bring lunch? Do you have to by that cure pair of shoes?

h.) Want less. I love my little townhouse. My car is a 2005 with 175,000 miles on it - it's also a red 350Z and I love it too. I don't need a big house on a big lot. I don't have to have a new car, although most people are aghast when they hear the mileage. I would never buy a pair of shoes or a handbag that costs more than $300. I just don't need all that junk. If you want less, you need less money and you are that much closer to freedom.
