Τι πιο όμορφο από το να γιορτάσει κανείς την Ελληνική Γλώσσα ταξιδεύοντας στον έναστρο ουρανό; Όπου κι αν κοιτάξεις, με τηλεσκόπιο ή γυμνά μάτια, βλέπεις τους μύθους, την παράδοση, τη γνώση, που η ελληνική γλώσσα καθιέρωσε στο ουράνιο στερέωμα...

Την Κυριακή 9 Φεβρουαρίου στις 12.00 μ.μ. η ΦΙΛΟΜΑΘΕΙΑ της Ελληνικής Γλώσσας σας καλεί στην αίθουσα του Πολιτιστικού Συλλόγου Αρμένων, όπου θα γίνει παρουσίαση με θέμα: «Μιλώντας την γλώσσα του έναστρου ουρανού».

Ομιλητής: Χρήστος Σωτηρόπουλος, καθηγητής Αγγλικής γλώσσας, Ερασιτέχνης Αστρονόμος.

Περίληψη: Η επιστήμη της Αστρονομίας κατείχε δεσπόζουσα θέση στις Αρχαίες Ελληνικές επιστήμες. Μεγάλοι φιλόσοφοι ασχολήθηκαν με την παρατήρηση του Σύμπαντος και ποιητές εμπνεύστηκαν από τα ουράνια σώματα, ενώ η πλούσια ελληνική μυθολογία βρήκε την θέση της ανάμεσα στους αστερισμούς. Θα μπορούσε όμως να ανθίσει και να κατακτήσει ολόκληρο τον δυτικό κόσμο η επιστήμη της Αστρονομίας χωρίς το απαράμιλλο εύρος της ελληνικής γλώσσας;

Μικρό βιογραφικό ομιλητή: Ο Χρήστος Σωτηρόπουλος γεννήθηκε στην Λάρισα είναι καθηγητής Αγγλικής με μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές στις τεχνολογίες εκπαίδευσης και ιδιοκτήτης κέντρων ξένων γλωσσών. Ασχολείται ερασιτεχνικά με την Αστρονομία, είναι ιδρυτικό μέλος του Συλλόγου Φίλων Αστρονομίας Κρήτης και εθνικός συντονιστής για τον οργανισμό «Αστρονόμοι Χωρίς Σύνορα».

This November, 22-23/11, it happens in Berlin! For two whole days Filomathia Greek Language Centre will be representing Greece at the international language exhibition, EXPOLingua!

Our Team is ready to take their places at Filomathia’s stand (A32), where apart from displaying promotional material of our work, visitors will have the chance to try Greek through interactive fun games and music!

But it’s not only that!... We are happy to announce our two extra events taking place at this Expo:

➥ On Friday 22nd Ms Irene Chryssoulaki will be holding a Greek Mini-Course for beginners where attendants will be motivated to speak Greek through fun and interactive activities!

➥ On Saturday 23rd Ms Eva Dimitsanti will be giving a conference on the topic: “Modern challenges in learning a language as old as Greek”, where she will discuss the importance of maintaining the connection between modern and old (ancient) Greek in the contemporary use of the language particularly after students have completed the Beginner’s Level.

Courses for children

Especially designed for young learners, these programs combine language and culture in a fun, recreational way that keeps children busy and interested!

More specifically:

• We open different classes according to language level of participants

• We use books approved by the Ministry of Education and also provide extra material

• We involve story-telling, music and other cultural activities in class (i.e. mythology, singing or dancing and more)

• Amount of time: 15 hours a week (suggested plan: 3 hours per 5 days or as agreed with parents/guardians)

• Children together with their parents/guardians might choose to spend some of these 15 hours on extra cultural activities outside school, for example a visit to the Old Town of Chania, a visit to a museum or attend a cultural performance accompanied by their teacher

• Cost*: 440 € per week (discount available for siblings or if you choose to enroll for more than a week)

• After this course and if lessons continue (either in class or via Zoom) for a significant period, children can sit the exams of Certificate of Attainment in Modern Greek (εξετάσεις πιστοποίησης ελληνομάθειας, ΚΠΓ)

Courses available from April to late October every year!

*The amount covers tuition fees and extra material provided in class. It does not include students’ books or tickets to museums and performances.

Sunday Walk around Halepa and Tabakaria district, 7th April 2019

Really glad the weather permitted this outing with some of our students! Halepa and the nearby area of Tabakaria are two distinct areas with great importance in the 19th century History of Crete. Walking around and seeing some of the marvelous architecture examples of that era, enjoying the beautiful sea view along the way, discovering the remnants of the now obsolete art of leatherworking - which was really famous in Tabakaria, made this outing really interesting! So interesting, that we all got hungry for local food at the end of the route!...

The busiest day of the Brussels Holiday Fair was today, Sunday 10th February! So many people came by that 3 people working for Filomathia were not enough sometimes!

On the whole, everything went really well! We achieved the goals we had set at the beginning of the Expo and made very interesting connections with other business people who view tourism not like the average man does. The real outcome of our effort will be estimated in a month after the Expo, when all "after Expo" contacts are made, but we know for sure that we did really well!

The heart of Europe knows education can be nicely combined with vacations, that Greek is easier than thought to be and that Filomathia and the whole region of Apokoronas, Chania, Crete, is here for all those who love Greece! Thank you for staying informed!

Too much work today as it was Saturday and an enormous number of visitors came by the Expo. That's why we have only a few pictures today. All of us were working full time at full speed!!

A special day also for us and the whole Greek speaking world: The International Day of the Greek Language! A lot of visitors were interested in this new institution and many of them expressed their admiration and gratitude towards the contribution of the Greek Civilization to all humanity... We even heard a Greek song sang by a Belgian visitor, while a Dutch one burst into tears explaining why "his heart is left in Greece", as he said.

Quite a touching day for us, full of encouragement by many Expo visitors as to what we do and how we decided to promote our country... We have been amazed by how much affection we received today... We have friends out there, after all...

Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Ελληνικής Γλώσσας, 9 Φεβρουαρίου

Την ίδια μέρα με την εορτασμό της μνήμης του Διονυσίου Σολωμού, τον εθνικό ποιητή του «Ύμνου εις την Ελευθερίαν», αποφασίστηκε η θέσπιση της Παγκόσμιας Ημέρας της Ελληνικής Γλώσσας (ΦΕΚ Β΄ 1384/24/04/2017). Η πρωτοβουλία ξεκίνησε από Ελληνικές Κοινότητες της Ιταλίας με στόχο, όχι μόνο την ανάδειξη της ελληνικής γλώσσας και της σημασίας της σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο, αλλά και την αναζωπύρωση του ενδιαφέροντος για μια από τις αρχαιότερες και πολυσήμαντες γλώσσες του κόσμου. Τη γλώσσα πάνω στην οποία θεμελιώθηκε όλος ο δυτικός κόσμος.

Σήμερα όλο και περισσότεροι άνθρωποι στην υφήλιο μαθαίνουν την ελληνική γλώσσα, η οποία κρίνεται απαραίτητο προσόν σε πολλούς επιστημονικούς και επιχειρηματικούς τομείς. Το διαδίκτυο έχει παίξει σημαντικό ρόλο στην έξαψη του ενδιαφέροντος για την εκμάθηση αυτής της γλώσσας, καθώς έχουν δημιουργηθεί πολλές πηγές πληροφόρησης για τη σημασία των ελληνικών και πλέον η δυνατότητα διαδικτυακών μαθημάτων, δίνει ευκολότερη πρόσβαση σε μαθητές από όλον τον κόσμο.

International Day of Greek Language, 9 February

On the same day celebrating the memory of Dionysios Solomos, the national poet who composed the “Hymn to Liberty”, the International Day of Greek Language has been officially established (ΦΕΚ Β΄ 1384/24/04/2017). The initiative was originally taken by the Greek Communities of Italy with the aim not only to promote the importance of the Greek language at a worldwide scale, but also to reignite the public interest in one of the most ancient and meaningful languages of the world. The language on which, the whole western world was founded.

Today more and more people around the globe learn the Greek language, as it is considered necessary qualification in many scientific and business fields. The Internet has played an essential role in sparkling the interest in learning this language, since many sources of information on the importance of Greek have been created, while the opportunity of on-line lessons gives students all around the world easier access to learning Greek.

Journée mondiale de la langue grecque, le 9 février

Le même jour, célébrant la mémoire de Dionysios Solomos, le poète national qui a composé “l'Hymne à la liberté”, la Journée mondiale de la langue grecque a été officiellement établie (24 1384/24/04/2017). L’initiative a été prise à l’origine par les communautés d’Italie dans le but non seulement de promouvoir l’importance de la langue grecque à l’échelle mondiale, mais également de faire renaître l’intérêt du public dans l’une des langues les plus anciennes et les plus significatives du monde. La langue sur laquelle tout le monde occidental a été fondé.

Aujourd'hui, de plus en plus de personnes dans le monde apprennent la langue grecque, considérée comme une qualification nécessaire dans de nombreux domaines scientifiques et commerciaux. Internet a joué un rôle essentiel en suscitant l’intérêt pour l’apprentissage de cette langue, car de nombreuses sources d’information sur l’importance du grec ont été créées, tandis que la possibilité de suivre des cours en ligne offre aux étudiants du monde entier un accès plus facile à l’apprentissage du grec.

Filomathia and the Minister of Tourism

Today's surprise was a visit to our Expo by the Minister of Tourism, Ms E. Kountoura, who got really excited to see FILOMATHIA-Greek Language Centre among the Greek exhibitors! The picture taken shows exactly how unexpected the visit to our Filomathia's stand was (expressions of wonder on the faces of both Eirini and Eva from Filomathia, then the Minister standing proud and then the Director of the National Greek Tourism Organisation in Brussels, Ms E. Skarveli, full of joy!

Today, also, was INTERACTION day with the Greek language! Lots of visitors were interested in writing their own names in Greek on a whiteboard, playing with the Greek alphabet and speaking their very first Greek words! There were also visitors who already spoke Greek well enough and have travelled to Greece many times, thus, their interest in our work and the location of our school in Crete was profound! We could say that today A LOT of Greek was heard in the Salon des Vacances Expo!! Until tomorrow!
