After an extended absence, our podcast finally returns with a new mix from our NYC-based friend, DJ and producer Dan Alcala. A year since Dan did his debut mix for our podcast (back in May 2007) and moved to New York, he's settled into the city, has a job, and is now trying to get back into DJing and production.

As for the mix, he describes it as "a balance between stuff I think is good for home listening as well sounding good in the club." Enjoy!

Filter27 Podcast 005 - Peer Benary

The fifth installment of our podcast comes courtesy of Berlin-based DJ Peer Benary.

Benary is currently resident at Bar23 and ZMF (together with Filter27 contributor Florian Wizorek) in Berlin. Recently he began to spin at MFE (also in Berlin), where he's showcasing more goa-esque sounds than his usual techno-influenced progressive sound. His debut production effort, "Eazy Dub," is doing promo rounds now.

As for this podcast mix, "it is a presentation of my genre-polar opposites: a warm, ethereal beginning contrasting with a deep, dark almost monotone conclusion," he says. "The inspiration for this mix came as a direct result of traveling through the various soundscapes in my repertoire, however, this mix is somehow more technoid than those I normally deliver."

There is a number of his own re-edits that preserve the flow. Also a track from 2001 finds its way in, proving that the newest is not always the best.

Filter27 Podcast 004 - Dan Alcala

It's been a while since our last podcast. So now, for the fourth installment, we invited DJ and producer Dan Alcala to "mix things up" for us.

Growing up in Boston he landed his first local club gig at the long running 'Analog Lounge' night at Club Vertigo. In late 2004, he won the 2004 Avalon Nightclub mix contest, setting him aside from the many local DJ's. Since then he has continued gaining recognition and playing at other Boston venues such as Rise, The Phoenix Landing, Aria, 360 Ultra Lounge, Venu and Water Club.

He describes his sound as "simply melodic" and the records he plays are almost always on the melodic side or have nice bouncy basslines. Whatever isn’t boring or really repetitive is what he tends to gravitate towards.

A typical Alcala set could include anything from Jark Prongo or MFA peak time stormers to a relaxing Ulrich Schnauss or M83. "I like to challenge myself by playing all sorts of stuff. Playing straight up house or trance is easy," he says. "I program my sets by how the songs feel, not their genre".

Still only 23 years old, and now with college out of the way, Dan hopes to focus more on music production and DJing. His next goal is to get an original track signed and become a full-fledged producer.

He recenly moved to New York City to pursue both his musical and design career.

Filter27 Podcast kicks off 2007 with a mix from Berlin based artist Espe. If you are a dedicated fan of ambient and chillout then you're in for a treat.

Within the last two years, Espe has compiled more than a half dozen of ambient and chillout mixes for the popular internet radion station Digitally Imported, as well as numerous own compilations and guest mixes. Currently he is workining on his debut, yet untitled artist album.

Filter27 Podcast 002 - Octex

The second installment of Filter27 Podcast comes from Ljubljana, Slovenia-based DJ and producer Octex.

Octex (real name Jernej Marusic), has been experimenting with music equipment since late 90s, when he fell in love with the sound of old analog synthesizers. In all this years he found himself in doing 'Organic Crackle and Tone EXperiments' (Octex), fusing his diverse influences with the unique flavour of Ljubljana. This resulted in releases on numerous compilations, the first one being Elektrotehnika Slavenika.

In 2002 he released his debut album Idei Lahesna on Tehnika Records, which received high praises from both critics and the public, and tracks from it got licensed to numerous compilations and mix CDs. His self-made video for track "Emergon" got played on such TV stations as VIVA and Onyx TV, which is quite surprising for this style of music. 2005 saw the release of Variations on rx:tx label on which "the misty, heavily processed dub of Variations, sunk in the thicket of unique soundings, crackles and noises is so thick, greasy and interlaced, that it can swallow an unprepared listener."

In the meantime, Octex has become one of the most active Slovenian live acts, and has performed on such prominent festivals as Club Transmediale, FutureSonic, ISEA, La Batie, Nuit Blanche and Exit - either solo or as part of multimedia project Signal-Sever.

For his almost 2.5 hour long Filter27 mix, Octex has put together an enormous selection of more than 70 (seventy!!) tracks, from dub to techno, experimental, dubstep, tech-house, downtempo and reggae.
