Follow him @coachbrianfriend

***

Filthy 150 Preview

by Brian Friend

The 2020 Sanctional season is ready to kick off with the Filthy 150 from Punchestown Racecourse outside of Dublin Ireland. With the start date so close to the end of this season’s Open, many elite athletes are ready to start the season right. Today we address the athletes most likely to win, most likely to earn a Games invite (remember those can be two different things), and highlight one male and one female athlete you might not know, someone who could surprise you this weekend.

Men:

There are 6 National Champions in the field as the current Open leaderboard sits:

	Roman Khrennikov: Russia

	Jonne Koski: Finland

	Zack George: United Kingdom

	Klaus Uggerhoj: Denmark

	Linus Bresander: Sweden

	Lukas Esslinger: Switzerland

Additionally, 3 athletes in the field are currently in the top 20 worldwide in the Open:

	Jean-Simon Roy-Lemaire

	Tim Paulson

	Cedric Lapointe

And one man sits just outside the top 20, but will likely get in once a few athletes go Team:

	Sean Sweeney.

Sweeney’s position of being just outside the top 20, but likely in a position to eventually qualify, is the only possible point of confusion on the men’s side. He will be competing as if he doesn’t have a spot, but men who are chasing him this weekend will know that there’s a good chance that even if they finish directly behind him, there’s the possibility they will eventually earn the invitation.

Of the men listed above, Khrennikov and Koski, appear the most likely to be vying for the top podium spot in Ireland. Khrennkov had three top five finishes last year during Sanctionals, including a win at the Italian Showdown. Koski only competed in one Sanctioned event, the French Throwdown, which he won.

Will Moorad, who did not earn a qualifying spot through the Open this year, will be another man worth watching. He podiumed at all three Sanctioned events he participated in last year, including taking the top spot in Brazil.

Dark Horse for the Men:

The men’s competition for the Filthy 150 is very deep, over half the field finished inside the top 100 in the Open, and that’s not including 4 men who were inside the top 100 during the 2019 Open, but did not participate in the 2020 Open. Picking one man as a potential dark horse is tough. You could go with last year’s Polish national champion Bartek Lipka who seemed to have a lot of potential but did not make it out of the First Cut event at the Games. You could go with one of the Irishmen in the field, Michael Smith, was the Irish National Champion in 2019 and had an impressive 26th place finish in his first trip to Madison this past August, while Sam Stewart is coming off a very impressive Open in which he placed 43rd world wide and narrowly lost the Irish national race to PD Savage. Or you could be excited to see Dan Bailey return to the competition floor after a two and half year hiatus.

But, the man who has not been mentioned, who I expect to do very well is Drew Wayman. At two separate Sanctionals last year (Wodapalooza and Strength in Depth), Drew finished one spot below the man who eventually took the Games invitation. He was slated to compete at the Granite Games but withdrew. He’s been locked into his training and had an excellent Open, finishing 51st worldwide. Don’t be surprised if you see the name Wayman floating towards the top of the leaderboard in Ireland come Sunday.

Women:

There are 5 female National Champions in the field:

	Sara Sigmundsdottir: Iceland

	Kristin Holte: Norway

	Emma McQuaid: Ireland

	Emilia Leppanen: Finland

	Simona Quintana: Chile

Outside of them, no other athletes competing currently sit in a qualifying position out of the Open, which means they will all be vying for the Games invitation.

Sigmundsdottir, Holte, and McQuaid are all powerhouses who will be competitive throughout the weekend and in contention for a podium spot. Sam Briggs, who suffered an injury mid-Open (and still went on to have the best time worldwide in 20.5) appears to have recovered and will also be fighting for the podium alongside those ladies. The injury prevented her from being the fittest in the United Kingdom, but, assuming she’s healthy, she’s now the clear front runner to take the Games invitation from the Filthy 150.

Dark Horse for the Women:

Of the remaining women in the field, Emelie Lundberg, of Sweden, strikes me as the most likely relative unknown athlete to challenge Briggs for the Games spot. Lundberg is coming off a 40th place worldwide Open finish (which appears like it will fall just short of a qualifying spot, even after a slew of backfills as women go team). She also finished as the second fittest in Sweden, behind Games veteran Camilla Salomonsson Hellman. Lundberg was a member of team Superhero Project last season which took second place at Fittest in Cape Town as well. She competed at Regionals in both 2017 and 2018, finishing as high as 15th. She trains at least once weekly with Bresander (the male national champion from Sweden), and competing with his support, should feel like she is set up well to make a run this weekend.

Top Teams to Watch:

For teams attempting to make it to the Games, the Filthy 150 is the first opportunity of the season. There are 23 teams in the elite division for this competition, and the recipe to get that invitation is simple, win. It’s probable we’ll see 3 teams who eventually separate themselves from the pack as the weekend wears on:

Team Nation (Craig Kenney, Paul Tremblay, Jennifer Smith, Carol-Ann Reason-Thibault)

These four Games veterans bring plenty of power and experience with them to Ireland. Kenney and Smith both competed on teams at the Games last season. Tremblay, though more well known for his individual accomplishments, competed on a team at the Games back in 2012. Reason-Thibault has little team experience, but she’s qualified for the Games as an individual 5 consecutive times and has placed in the top 20 the last 4 years. They combine for an impressive total of 15 Games appearances.

ROMWOD MeatSquad (Dex Hopkins, Christian Harris, Brooke Haas, Kelly Baker)

Hopkins, Harris, and Baker all have previous Games experience on a team. Haas is coming off her first trip to the Games this past August after qualifying through the 2019 Open. Between the four of them, they have a combined 19 Regional and 5 Games appearances.

Team JST Compete (David Shorunke, Benjamin Massey, Megan Lovegrove, Emma Tall)

Another team with Games experience: Massey and Lovegrove were both on the 2017 JST team, Massey was also on the team that took 10th this past August. Tall is coming off her first individual trip to the Games, she qualified last season out of Strength in Depth and had respectable showing of 32nd in Madison. Shorunke nearly qualified as an individual through Strength in Depth last year as well, but lost by a very narrow margin after the final event. He did compete at the Games on CrossFit Nordic in 2016 when they took 6th place.

There’s a lot of anticipation for the first full Sanctional season and it all starts this weekend in Ireland. With talented athletes in every division, it seems the Filthy 150 is more than ready to get the season started in an exciting and competitive way.

***

A guest post by Brian Friend @coachbrianfriend

#13 Countdown in on

Are you #filthyready?

22nd September 2019

We are officially 8 weeks out

YOU are 8 weeks out

Its 18 days until The Open

Get in the OPEN, get warmed up then join us on 22nd November

Its going to be SPECTACULAR

#filthyready

#13 Countdown in on

#12 Multiple Events, One Qualifier

Qualifying for Sanctionals just got easier

25th June 2019

CrossFit®Filthy 150 has teamed up with Wodapolooza and The Atlas Games to bring athletes from around the world a new way to compete at CrossFit® Sanctional™ events next season.

This year’s changes to the CrossFit® Games format has brought plenty of new challenges for competitive athletes, chief among them being the qualification process for events they wish to compete at. A brand new online event, International Online Qualifier, will allow athletes to complete one set of qualifier workouts and potentially qualify for multiple Sanctional™ events all in one go. The collaboration between Filthy 150 (Nov 2019), Wodapalooza (Feb 2020) and the Atlas Games (April 2020) aims to streamline the qualification process for athletes and simplify the planning of their season ahead.

The entry process will be simple. Athletes will register once, then select the events they hope to qualify for, costing $25 (approx €22) per event. The new International Online Qualifier will provide a worldwide leaderboard and show placings for all athletes involved in any of the three events. There will also be a separate leaderboard for each Filthy 150, Wodapalooza and The Atlas Games.

Other events are expected to be added to the qualifier in the coming weeks, providing athletes with more opportunities to compete throughout the 2020 season. For the Filthy 150, the qualifier workouts for the Elite Individual Division and the Elite Team Division will be the same, with 30 Individual spots up for grabs for both the Elite Male and Elite Female Divisions. The Filthy 150 will be inviting 6 men and 6 women to compete alongside the qualified athletes. As for the Elite Teams, the workouts are based on combined individual scores, meaning athletes do not need to be in the same location as their teammates to complete all qualifiers. There will be 20 spots filled through the International Online Qualifier, with 4 additional teams being invited to compete in November.

For Wodapalooza, the top 90 athletes will qualify across three divisions, Elite, RX and Intermediate Individuals. Where its not about the winning or the medals. Where its about getting people together, to broaden people’s social circles so they could make friends with other like minded individuals and discuss their favourite topics to their hearts content, CrossFit obviously. All the while, doing their favourite thing, CrossFit!

He had somewhat settled on asking 6 gyms with the stipulation that they each had to bring 25 people

150 people

The gardens are cut, the rebels have the BBQ’s out and everyone else is warning that they better not jinx the weather with their daring act! As we all know, the jinx is a very real thing, that can indeed have an affect on the Irish weather.

With a history steeped in paganism, folklore and catholicism, it’s only natural that we have a few old wives tales that just never died and that some would barely dare to ignore.

As previously mentioned, do nothing to jinx the sun if you see it attempting to make its way out from behind a cloud. It doesn’t come often and when its here Ireland is the best place in the world. The grass is greener, the people are happier, it’s never a struggle to get out of bed and the best sessions ever, always happen on a random sunny day.

Never been on an Irish session? You are in for a ‘treat’. The sun usually heralds the start of a session. People’s moods jump into the hyperactive range. Summer clothes are donned and the sandals make a reappearance. The group Whatsapp lights up phones nationwide as the early birds plan out what the day has in store. Phone calls are made when agreements cannot be reached and finally a time and place is agreed and then its “bye bye bye bye bye bye bye bye bye bye bye bye” until someone hangs up the phone.

While eating is cheating on the sesh, it’s always advisable to line the tummy well beforehand, an Irish session can last a few days, specially over a bank holiday weekend. While lining the tummy, be careful not to spill salt though. If you spill it, you need to throw it over your left shoulder to spite the devil. Yup, spite him. Never does one act not follow the other.

While partaking in the few pints of Bulmers with copious amounts of ice, in the awesome sun trap that is the pub’s beer garden, always be aware of what your nose is at. An itchy nose is the sign of a fight and nothing ruins a good old Irish session more than 2 buffoons going at it in the middle of the beer garden.

While keeping an eye on your nose, you may also want to notice your ears. Burning ears are a sign someone is gossiping about you. Either that or its a sign you have been in the sun too long with your pale Irish skin and haven’t put factor on.

On the subject of bodily itches, if the palm of your hand itches you will be coming into money, a good time to run to the local bookies and put a bet or two on. If it's your elbow you will be changing beds, I’ve got nothing on this one, take it whatever way you wish or just pray your elbow doesn’t itch! Got that? Nose, ear, palms, elbows!

While the session is in full swing, mingle and find loads of new friends. You’ll be best friends with at least 10 new people by the end of a good session. If you happen upon a nice young lad who’s the seventh son of a seventh son then he has the power over all diseases and can cure them by laying hands. I’m not sure they walk around with signs on though. Like a needle in a haystack trying to find one of them.

On your walk home from the session, after throwing your salt over your shoulder and avoiding all bodily itches and finding sacred sons, be watchful for the dread that is the Magpie. If a magpie dares to cross your field of vision, wave at him! We all know the poem “one for sorrow, two for joy etc”. Well waving at the magpie negates the truth of the poem from being realised. Obvious right? If in doubt wave at every single bird. Prefer to look slightly daft than to be jinxed by the magpie, am I right?

If however, on your wander back home you get chased by a ghost or an evil spirit, try to get to a stream of running water. If you can cross it, no devil or evil spirit will be able to follow. Get ye to the rivers lads! Run as fast as your little drunk legs can carry you. Luckily we don’t seem to be too infested by evil spirits these days.

On that note, before I head out, I’m off to check I’ve not left the immersion and all the sockets turned on in case I burn the house down. A well known fact spewed by every Irish Mother ever.

Now that I've armed you with all these facts, you can be fully prepared for all the onsite pubs and the Irish session that will all be part of Filthy 150 2019!

#7 The Irish Itch

#6 Judgement Day is nigh

Judging, its all about the judging

1st May 2019

It makes it very real, when other hoomans get involved in something you’ve already been working on for months.
Strong teams are characterised by diversity and malleability. Utilising each members strengths to play the game. A team of weightlifters will never win Filthy. Likewise, a team of cardio bunnies will never win Filthy. We want diverse teams with gymnasts and weightlifters and cardio queens and body building bicep curlers.

Everyone on a team needs to wear their hat well so that the team thrives. A hat that is too big will over shadow your team, too small and it will not be capable of support.

How do you get to a point of being a cohesive team with all your hats fitting perfectly, each hat supporting the one above and never weighing down the ones below?

The answer is not straight forward. There are times when all hats may end up on the ground. There are other times all the hats are in the air. There may even be times when all hats are firmly on one head for whatever reason. How heavy do you think all those hats are? And why is everyone else’s head naked?

It takes work. Working together, time after time. Failing together, succeeding together and struggling through it together. Spend your time together well. Train together, hurt together, laugh together then come to Filthy in November and show us team work.

You are coming to partake in the biggest Irish event of the year. It’s going to be spectacular (no pressure on us!) Make it more special by being the best team mate you can be. It will show on the floor

Support is the key. The Punchestown Festival is considered the grande finale of the jump season with top class horses, trainers and jockeys from both sides of the Irish sea converging on the Kildare venue to settle scores and confirm reputations. The quality of racing is unrivalled with a total of 12 Grade 1 contests taking place.

Setting our core values. Who are we and why do we do what we do? Thankfully we stuck it out, heard a few hard truths, got some constructive feedback and ate some ice-cream. It just happens to be the warmest day in Ireland so far this year, sitting at a comfortable 20 degrees outside. Inside we were not so comfortable. It took numerous attempts by a number of us to get the aircon going. There’s definitely a joke in there somewhere.
