Many restaurants and even supermarkets are offering free cash or gift cards if you purchase a certain dollar quantity of their gift cards during the holiday season.

I just checked out Vons' website and found out they are giving customers $10 off their next purchase with any $100 (Vons) gift card purchase. That's a good deal if you are a regular customer. Just purchase the $100 gift card for yourself, then go back the following week, save $10 on your purchase, and use the $100 card you bought last week. Since you were going to buy groceries there anyway, it's a no brainer.

Extreme Couponing

I started watching "Extreme Couponing" on TLC, and I'm hooked. This show is awesome! The people on the show save so much money, just by couponing, it's ridiculous. You have to see it to believe it. And they get all sorts of things for FREE.

The only drawback to extreme couponing is that most of these people have an entire room (or garage) devoted to all the products they buy/get for free. I just don't have the space to store 100 rolls of paper towels. Plus, as a single person, what am I going to do with 100 rolls of paper towels!

Some of these couponers/hoarders have several years supplies of items like deodorant, mustard bottles, and toothpaste. I wonder if they actually go through all of these items before they expire. I know paper towels don't go bad, but at some point those 43 bottles of mustard are going to be "not so fresh" and should probably get thrown out. So what's the point, if you can't use everything you get for free, then why "buy" them?

Whether or not these couponers actually use all the items they acquire, it's still fun to watch them get "high" off some extreme bargains where ultimately $649 worth of stuff ends up costing them only $7.23.

Big Business on Facebook

I found this great game on Facebook called Big Business. It basically starts with a small city including a farm and a house. The idea is to produce or grow products at the farm and then eventually process them at the mill, or other processing plants, to turn them into ready to sell products like muffins or cornflakes. It takes a little while to grow your town because you have to grow and process items to sell in order to make money to expand your town/businesses. I really like this game and I think anyone who likes business related games should definitely try it out. It's easy and fun, and doesn't take much of your time, like some of the other Facebook games out there.

Computer infected with a virus

I haven't been keeping up to date with my blogs because I'm trying to fight of a computer virus. I think I might have isolated it but I won't know for sure until I completely remove it and reboot my computer. I'm scanning it right now, and I hope this will solve the problem.
Apparently I didn't have one of the patches installed on my computer and I think that's what made it vulnerable to the virus.
I'll keep you updated as I try to fix it.

Yes this does seem obvious, but if we all spent less than we earned, no one would be in debt. The best way to track your spending is to pay cash for everything you buy, save all your receipts, and think twice about large purchases. This last one can be difficult because most people buy on impulse. If you just took a day or so to really think about whether or not you need to buy that expensive item, you will probably realize you don't need it, and you'll save a lot of money.

Keep track of your take home pay, after taxes. Then subtract all your expenses. If you're spending more than you make, then you need to look at your day to day expenses and see where you can cut out some things to save money.

Once you've cut spending and have extra money, that money should go to retirement savings, emergency funds, or any other saving account you've promised not to touch until it is really needed.

Tonight I saved a little money while out for dinner at the mall. I ate in the food court and decided to order a kid's meal both to save money and to get a smaller portion of food. I can never eat a full adult meal, and if I do, I get so full, it's just too much food. So tonight I thought, why not just order a kid's meal. I'll save money, and eat just the right amount of food, with no left overs.

The kid's meal was $5.50 versus the adult's $8.00. I was totally satisfied with my meal, I didn't stuff myself trying to finish a big plate, and I saved $2.50 at the same time.

Having an emergency fund is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your financial stability. It's not an optional item, it's a MUST HAVE!

People underestimate the importance of having an emergency fund because they don't think they will ever be in the position to need it. They don't think they will ever lose their job, or have some medical emergency that will prevent them from working. Without a job, there is no income, and without income, the bills don't get paid, and the trouble begins.

Today's tip is good, but I believe it could be better. I believe that an emergency fund should contain enough money to support your household for at least 6 months (not 3). This is different than having 6 months' income. If you need $2000 a month to run your household then you should save at least $12,000 ($2000 x 6 months) in your emergency fund. Some people live beyond their means, and only make $1700 a month, when they need $2000 a month to run their household. If they saved only $10,200 ($1700 x 6 months) they would actually be $1800 ($12,000 - 10,200) short. This is why I say you should have saved what your household would need to survive for 6 months (not just your income for 6 months, because those numbers are probably different).

Think of the emergency fund as insurance in case something bad were to happen to you or your spouse. You probably have health insurance, life insurance, or car insurance, so why not have an emergency fund as a job loss/loss of income insurance. It's always better to be safe than sorry, and it will always make you feel better knowing that you'll be okay if you lose part of your income for a short period of time - your emergency fund will cover you until you get back on your feet.

What does this mean?

Well for car insurance it means that if you raise your deductible, you could save a little money each month, which will end up saving you a lot of money each year.

The deductible is the amount of money you must pay if you get in an accident and have to pay to repair your car. You have to pay this first, then the insurance company will cover the rest.

If you can make sure you have enough money saved to cover your deductible (usually $250-$1000) then why not raise it up, say to $1000. So that if you do get into a car accident, you will have the money to cover the deductible. Raising your car insurance deductible is an easy way to save a little extra cash each month.

Manny Ramirez has been suspended for 50 games for supposedly using performance enhancing drugs.

How does this relate to Business?

The Dodgers will be saving $7.7 million of the $25 million they were going to pay him. My advice to the Dodgers: With the money they save they should go out and recruit some less expensive, honest, drug-free athletes, who might actually help the team, not hurt it with bad publicity.

Tax Day April 15 - Have You Finished Your Taxes???

Well the day is finally here. Tax day that is. I finally finished my taxes, and mailed them out today. Just a few days shy of the deadline. I always wait until the last minute, but at least I get them done on time.

For the Federal, I have to pay about $75, but for the State, I am getting a refund of about $550. I should say, I'm supposed to get a refund, but if the state of California doesn't have any money left to pay me, then I may have to wait awhile for my refund. No worries, as long as I get my money. I'm not like most people who desperately need their refund checks to pay their bills. But it would be nice to get that money sooner rather than later.

I went to IKEA today to help my parents shop for their house, and we found some really good deals.

For myself, I bought a floor lamp, with an attached mini lamp for reading, for only $14.99. All of their lamps are really inexpensive.

My parents got a nice floor rug to put in their living room for only $19.99. It's a nice accent rug that will go well with their new furniture, and it was super cheap compared to other rugs out there. Of course, the rug they bought might not last as long as another more expensive rug, but by the time it's worn out, they'll probably be tired of it anyway. Then they don't have to feel bad about giving it away.

My parents also got a cute little "night stand" which they will actually put in the living room. It will look nice there, and it only cost $49.99.

Together we spent over $250, but we had a coupon that saved us $25 on any purchase over $250. That's a 10% savings. All in all, we spent a lot, but also saved a lot, so we did pretty well.

My Las Vegas Vacation - How I Saved Money on Meals

I just got back from Las Vegas, and I wanted to share with you some of the ways I saved money while there.

Whenever I go to Las Vegas, I always try to find the best deals, and some easy ways to save money.

I stayed at the Rio, for FREE, since I have a Players' card, and they send me Free room deals every few months. Included with that deal, I had a 2 for 1 coupon for the Buffet at Harrah's. That was a great deal. I had the dinner buffet, which is a little expensive, but not when it's buy one, get one free. The buffet is $21.99, so for 2 people, with the coupon, it came out to be $11 each. For all that food, like sushi, crab legs, shrimp, and more, that's a really good deal.

Earlier that morning I had eaten at the Gold Coast at their buffet which is pretty good for the price. It's $6.95 regular price, or $5.95 with the Players' card. Since I gamble there often, I had a lot of points in my account. Those point I earned can be cashed out for money, or used to purchase meals or rooms at the Hotel. I used the points to pay for the buffet, so the breakfast was free.

Eating 2 buffets in one day may seem like too much, but I skipped lunch, ate only 2 meals that day, and saved money by not having to spend any money on lunch. That was an easy way to save money, and it helped out my diet too.

I used a lot of points this week to pay for my meals, so I ended up saving a lot of money. If you go to Vegas often, or even if you go just once a year, you should sign up for the Players' cards at the various Hotels you like to gamble at. It's a great and easy way to get free stuff.

Having Trouble Paying your Mortgage, Try a Loan Modification

If your having trouble paying your mortgage, and you think you might be in under your head, try a loan modification before it's too late.

My friend and I bought our condos at the same time, and in the same complex, for the same price, about 3 years ago. Now, our homes are worth about half of what we paid for them.

I'm not having any money problems, but my friend on the other hand, can barely keep up with her mortgage. Her credit card debt is rising, and she wants it to stop before it gets out of hand. She was going to try to refinance, but since her condo has dropped in price, a refi is out of the question.

While talking with her mortgage company, they advised her to try a loan modification. Basically what this would do is it would adjust the terms of the loan so that her payments would be less, and she could afford to keep her condo. She could either adjust her rate, or increase the length of the loan, or both, in order to decrease the payments.

Not everyone qualifies for this, and I don't know exactly how the mortgage companies decide who gets to modify their loan, but if you're in this situation, and you don't want it to get worse, I would suggest at least calling your mortgage company to see if they can help you out. It doesn't cost anything to try, and if you don't qualify, maybe they can try to find another way to help you keep your home.
