During my trip to Israel, a story told by our guide really stuck in my head as a lesson that we must all remember in marketing.  In order to begin to let your prospects get to know you and trust you, “you gotta get them in the door!”  Here is the story that our guide Amos told us about the sales tactics used in the old city of Jerusalem.  While you are wandering the streets, a shop owner will come out and ask you to help him make a sign to post in the window (in whatever language you speak) for a sale, etc…  Then, while you are in their shop “helping” them make a sign, they will get you coffee or tea, then when you are finished, they will offer you 1 earring as a gift for helping them with this task.

Well, we all know that 1 earring does not make a complete gift, (unless you are still one of the men wearing only one earring and now even men are wearing 2 earrings).  So, naturally, you will want the other earring to match, and while you are asking how much for the matching earring, the shop owner will be placing the matching bracelet and necklace on the counter to compliment the purchase.  Now, let me clarify, I am not advocating these sort of sales techniques (we were exposed to so many “tricks” it got quite annoying), but I do want to point out some of the reasoning behind it all, which is quite interesting and can be applied to your business in an ethical way.

First of all, do you notice how the shop owner gets you in the door?

• He appeals to your desire to help others!  Who’s gonna say no when asked to help an innocent shop owner with his language barrier?  I wouldn’t have if I were asked, luckily I wasn’t asked.  I told Amos next time he should let the tourists know these things before their free day, and he acted like we should know to expect those sort of tactics.  I don’t know about you, but to me, it is pretty sneaky.  Next, what did the shop owner do to make you feel obligated to buy something from him?
• He gave you something (coffee or tea while you worked, then 1 earring).  Cialdini’s book Influence, explains our obligation that we feel when we are given something that we need to reciprocate.  Well, this leads us to the “hard close” as he lays the other earring and matching bracelet and necklace side by side on the counter.  The pit I am feeling in my stomach just writing this acknowledges that you will generally feel some need to “pay him back” for his kindness and gifts.  Now remember, we did not ask for anything, which makes it twice as hard.

How can you get some ethical marketing techniques out of something that seems so underhanded?  Well, first of all, people like to help, and people like free stuff.  So, when you offer them a free report in exchange for having them help you by answering a question about their biggest marketing challenge, you allow them to feel as if they have helped, they get good free information, and you get their contact information in order to begin to build a relationship with them.  Everyone wins!  So, use the old city Jerusalem psychology in order to begin building your list, then you “have them in the door” so you can begin building trust and letting your list get to know who you are, this is the beginning of building an empire!

Take some marketing advice from the old city and apply it ethically in your own business!

I met Andrew at a Rich Schefren event in Orlando several months ago.  He was friendly, approachable, low-key, and he talked more than I do (which is quite an accomplishment!)  I fondly refer to him as “the Brit” because I love his British accent, humor, and nature.

His methods are fascinating and I listened intently as he described the premise of his methods.  Well, as the weekend went on and as the months continued after the seminar, I heard more about Andrew and found that he was often attending some large mastermind group or other event with many of the biggest names in the internet marketing industry.

Needless to say, this level of success has not gotten to Andrew’s head.  He is the most down to earth person and is truly a caring individual.  I believe that this is hard to find in the industry today.  It seems to be filled with too many “gurus” who have made it to the top and don’t seem to need the little guys who helped them to get there anymore.  This is an unfortunate phenomenon but such is the nature of man I guess.

Did you know that you can build your own funnel system?  See, the folks at the reverse funnel system will often tell you that their system is unique because all you do is drive traffic to the generic website and their
funnel system will take care of the rest. Well, first of all it is never really quite that simple.  People don’t generally just drop $50, then $3000, then $300/month without building some type of rapport with the person from which they are buying.  Don’t misunderstand me, some will, but they are few and far between.  The exposure that the prospect is getting is to Ty Coughlin, not to the person that they will be working with to build their business.  Let me help by breaking down this sort of funnel into three simple steps that you can do yourself at a savings of $300 per month.

Step #1:  You will need a landing or squeeze page that will capture your prospects name and email.  You can get generic pages for your squeeze page all over on the net. Now you know me well enough to know what I will tell you to put on your capture page….that’s right, a video to help people get to know you! Now your capture page should have a unique domain name.  You can go to godaddy and search for availability of domains.  Find something that is easy to remember and one that is catchy.  Be sure to do your keyword research to see what people are searching for and relate your domain accordingly.  Now once you buy your domain you will need to host it somewhere, I personally use hostgator, it’s inexpensive and they have great customer service (you can actually talk to a real person, what a concept!)  The last step in setting up your squeeze page is to go and get yourself an autoresponder account.  A very well known and reputable company is aweber.  They are widely used and easy to work with.  Then you will get some code that you can cut and paste the name and information form code into squeeze page which will capture the name and email of the prospect who is requesting your information, then it will begin to send them the emails that you have set up at the time increments that you have specified.  Now, you’re beginning to put your business on autopilot, you’re well on your way!

Step #2 is set up your follow up emails within your autoresponder system.  Give them the information they were seeking and reveal you personality and style so that your prospect gets to know you in your writing as well as your videos (which you are continuing to put out all the while right?)  Be sure to continually send them valuable information and not junk.  There is nothing more annoying than more “spam” in our email boxes.  If you are doing your job correctly, your prospects will look forward to your emails and open them right away.  So get a few emails loaded into your autoresponder and you can continue to add to them as you continue to market your business (with what…….with videos! See you’re catching on!)

Step #3, now that you have the infrastructure in place Now you have to get people to your squeeze page. The top of your funnel. You can pay for advertising to get people there of you can do the free stuff.  We will focus on mainly web 2.0 stuff.  video marketing, blogging and social networking.

Take action now! You have three steps to get done before you watch the next video in this series.

1. Get a domain name and web hosting right away. Contact me if you have any questions.  I will make you a video to show you how to do anything you might have questions with.
2. Get a separate email account and opt-in for more information on 5 different products that interest you. Remember to study their squeeze pages to see what you like and don’t like about them.
3. Decide if you are going to build your squeeze page of if you are going to hire it out.

As a child, my fondest memories are of travel with my family.  My family always believed that material things were far less valuable than lasting memories of experiences when we would travel together.  I am so thankful for their philosophy and desire to do the same with my family.

Just mentioning a few adventures which have led us to Maui, where I was certified at age 12 to scuba dive.  I still remember how my mother would tell me that she didn’t get to travel to Hawaii until she was almost 40, how fortunate I was to be able to travel there several times starting when I was in high school.  Our family was  also led to Saint Vincent in the Grenadines, where my dad (who was a dentist) and the family performed missionary dental work and we had the good fortune to scuba dive almost every day at the beach right outside of where we stayed.  Now the contrast of Maui and Saint Vincent were great to say the least.  I know how fortunate that I was to be able to travel do my certification dive in Maui instead of Blue Hole New Mexico, I was able to pet a moray eel on my first dive in the ocean! It was so exciting, and an opportunity that most don’t get at the early age of 12. 
My travel to Saint Vincent instilled a true picture of extreme poverty, and the absolute excess that we are blessed with in America.  I will never forget when my mother walked into a grocery store when we first got home, and she was overcome with emotion, and had to leave crying when faced with the abundance that we all to often take for granted.  It was several weeks before my mother could go to the grocery store again.  My brother and I, at ages 11 and 7 were shown a reality not seen by many in person, we had to travel in order to get this experience.  When you see children who are thrilled to have a bike wheel and a stick to push it with, it makes a child reconsider what is truly important in life.  We would travel through town with my brother and I in the back of the truck and all of the children in the town would be yelling out my brother’s name.  This experience changed us forever and we would travel there again several years later to continue the journey of life learning that taught us more than we could ever learn from books.
Travel took us to places outside of ourselves where we could experience things beyond our wildest dreams.  Because of this, I am so grateful for my family for allowing us the opportunity to learn through the experience of travel.

Okay, so I’m on the Kung Fu Panda kick and there is just one more article that needs to be written about this phenomenal movie.  Did I mention that I loved the movie?  So, in the last article, I pointed out that Po learned that the secret ingredient is him.  Now, that said, there is one more important point to mention when considering that we are the secret ingredient in internet marketing.  We are not marketing a product or service, we are marketing the secret ingredient….us!  Now, this secret ingredient needs to be genuine, that is the most important point when you’re putting yourself out there for the whole internet to get to know (or at least a portion of the internet).  People who will watch, read, and follow you will not be fooled by a facade.  You must made absolutely sure that what you say, write and do is in complete alignment with your beliefs and who you are, otherwise it will be obvious to those watching you. You want to attract others to you that are like you, so in order to do that you must be completely yourself.  Po is not a kung fu fighter and cannot be trained as all the others have been trained.  Here is the interaction between he and his master:

Shifu: When you focus on kung fu, when you concentrate, you stink.
[Po frowns]
Shifu: But perhaps that is my fault. I cannot train you the way I have trained the Five. I now see that the way to get through to you is with this.
[pulls out a bowl of dumplings]

Po: Oh great, ’cause I am hungry!
Shifu: [laughs] Good. When you have been trained, you may eat. Let’s begin.

So, Shifu figures out who Po really is and uses that to his advantage in training him to be a great kung fu fighter.  We must never fight our God given talents and abilities, nor ever look on them as weaknesses.  Instead we have to find ways in which to make them our strengths and shine in areas that only we can shine.  If you’re afraid to get in front of the camera and make videos, then use pictures and captions, I guarantee that you will find out that it’s not about being all polished, it’s about being yourself.  People will love and respect that, and you will have people calling you.  Why?  Because you put yourself out there, made yourself vulnerable, and showed others who you really were.  You know my challenge, I don’t have to restate it, just go and do it…..now!

So, I’m at the movies with my family yesterday, and this wonderful movie has great messages for young and old alike, as well as a very important message for marketers. The premise of the movie is this overweight panda (Jack Black who is hilarious), who has a dream to become a great kung fu fighter. His father (who is a goose or something… obvious adoption) is just certain that his son’s destiny is to become a noodle salesman like himself and the 3 generations before. Po, the panda is afraid to tell his father what his heart’s true desire is and falls unexpectectedly into his destiny.

Well, without giving too much away, the message at the end as a moral for the entire story is 1st, believe in yourself enough to try something that everyone else is telling you is ridiculous. Oftentimes, especially in this business, people will ask “now what is it that you do?” I know because I get it from my family all of the time. It is tough to persevere when you believe that all of those around you are against you and can’t understand the potential that is available to those who are able to market effectively on the internet. Here’s my challenge to you on this point, do something everyday that terrifies you, and just see what you find out about yourself

2nd and most important lesson that Po learns is that that “there is no secret ingredient” in the famous soup his father makes. The secret ingredient is his dad, that is why it is so delicious and everyone loves it. So, what does that mean for internet marketers…..you tell me! The secret ingredient IS you!! Products and programs will come and go, there is not anything new under the sun out there except for you. You are the brand and when people get to know you and like you, they will trust you and you will have a platform in which to direct people you come in contact with through this exposure to products, programs, etc… that you recommend. So there is your challenge, go and brand yourself, not a product, and watch the phenomenal results!

Speaking about financial freedom… well, it has different definitions, and if I have to read another financial freedom report, I swear! And don’t get me started on those pointless discussions about women and financial freedom! So here’s my 40 cents to financial freedom guide:

What is financial freedom anyway?

• Enough money to do what you want, how you want, when you want, and with whomever you want!
• The freedom to take off on a vacation whenever you want and not having to worry about a boss.
• The ability to set your own hours in business, and have your business running despite your presence.
• Not having to worry about if there is enough in the checking account when you go to pay a bill.

Unfortunately, achieving financial freedom is not a reality for most out there. 95% of people who set out in business never achieve financial freedom, and actually fail because they began without a system, and without a good financial freedom mentor and coach to guide them through the process.

Let’s talk about what financial freedom is NOT:

• Don’t you hate when you’re starting your own business to order to achieve financial freedom but you are the only employee and you must work outrageous hours to keep afloat
• And we all know that financial freedom is not having you income directly related to the number of hours that you put into the business and when you aren’t working, you aren’t earning

So apparently, achieving financial freedom has nothing to do with starting your own business aka….J.O.B (Just Over Broke).! Building Financial Freedom is more than owning your own business. For those of you who have been in the financial “judon’t know ring”, you know that having a financial freedom plan is essential to your existence. You might as well jump off a bridge now to save yourself the trouble if you don’t have a financial freedom plan! Unfortunately, financial freedom is a fantasy for many. It is much like a an episode of one of my classic favorite shows Fantasy Island. You think you’re on the island but “ju just don’t know” if you’re on the island. “Where is da plane?”
Financial freedom is about having a financial freedom plan that you are committed to following through with. It is also about having financial freedom resources that will allow you to leverage yourself, your time, and your business. Financial freedom resources include the best mentorship. Just because somebody else is financially free (those people with the paychecks on the screen or the shirtless Bermuda shorts wearing, having the audacity and cahones to wield a Mac while lying in a hammock) does not mean that they can lead you to financial freedom. Cough, cough Ty Coughlin! An ethical mentor will guide you to the best fit business opportunity for you, your needs, your goals, and aspirations. One of the best financial freedom resources is an ethical mentor who will point you to safe strategies for financial freedom.

Entrepreneurs know how to build large organizations of self motivated individuals who are motivated to achieve their own financial freedom. Come on now, do you want to be a cheerleader as your career? They are not babysitters, but business builders that attract other business builders to themselves simply by the way that they conduct their business.

Having a business is great . One of the best methods is to have a business that allows you to create financial freedom online. One of my good friends J Bill Gates says “there are 2 kinds of businesses, those that are online and those that are out of business.”

Okay, so you say you want financial freedom right? Well, what are you gonna do once you have achieved ultimate wealth and tons of free time? If you are like most, you will use all of that free time to travel! So, I know what I am doing my free time and money, I want to go traveling the world!

My husband’s family is from Foggia, Italy and I would love to visit the country of his ancestors. My family is from Germany, and I desire to see the beautiful countryside, drink the beer, and drive on the autobon. David loves to cook, and our dream is to do cooking tours.

Now how many of you have similar dreams? I hear from so many work from home moms that are ready to give up because they have done everything that their upline has told them (if their upline was available at all). They have made a list of 100 people they know and contacted them, they are using the 3 foot rule, handing out business cards, having home parties, maybe even using the internet some by placing classified ads. All of these actions have costed money and time and produced little to no results. Their husbands are getting angry and ready to cut off the advertising budget.

What if there was a way that all of these moms could work from home with a mentor who is interested only in their success by plugging them into financial freedom resources they have not yet been using? These are the stories that give hope to others, because there is a way for all of these work at home moms can achieve financial freedom it doesn’t include spending more money on advertising. I am SO tired of hearing so called “gurus” tell you that if you just spend more money on advertising you can be successful. This is simply not true. As s matter of fact, the most effective “recession proof” advertising out there costs very little, or is absolutely free! Align yourself with a mentor who can show you about building financial freedom without increasing the advertising budget. The only thing that will increase is the profits, and then the fun begins.
