Much has changed since I started teaching English in China more than fifteen years ago. Back then, I felt the Chinese people had a fascination for other cultures and the high respect I held for Chinese culture seemed to be reciprocated everywhere I traveled.
The process of obtaining a work visa to teach in China was straightforward and I felt the government had my back if anything went wrong. I never felt unsafe or threatened – I was able to work out any disputes directly with the school.
Unfortunately, the teaching landscape has greatly changed in China thanks to an increasing intolerance of foreigners along with an increase in the “red tape” required for teaching legally. This is not to say the demand for foreign teachers in China has decreased. Quite to the contrary, you will find Chinese schools falling all over themselves to hire you. So you need to be extra careful.
