Without any genuine handset minutia, LG formally opened a can of worms, and paved the way for a gale of conjecture online. What can we anticipate from LG’s 12-megapixel camera phone? With the company’s know-how in touchscreen telephones, you would anticipate LG’s 12-megapixel proposing with a touchscreen telephone (12 megapixel Renoir?). In fact, Sony prefers to refer to this mini-laptop as a "lifestyle notebook." It measures 9.6 inches by 4.7 inches by 0.9 inch--about the size of an overstuffed business envelope--and weighs about 1.5 pounds. Under the hood it carries Intel’s Atom CPU, 2GB of RAM, and a 60GB hard-disk drive. Even the unit’s 8-inch screen (with a native resolution of 1600 by 768 pixels) is surprisingly crisp for Web browsing. But starting at $900, it falls somewhere between a pricey netbook and an inexpensive, underpowered ultraportable. Check out our full review of the Sony VAIO P.

MSI Wind U115

Can’t decide between a netbook with a solid-state drive and one with a beefy hard-disk drive? Then how about getting one that has both? MSI’s latest Wind contains a small but speedy solid-state drive that hosts the OS and programs--and a hard-disk drive to provide space for file storage. The Wind U115 boots quickly; and when you don’t need the hard drive, you can disable it to increase your unit’s battery life. We didn’t have exact pricing at press time, but this netbook should cost less than $600.

zAcer Aspire One AOD150

Equipped with a 10.1-inch, 1025-by-600-pixel display, a 160GB hard drive, and a six-cell battery, the newly announced Acer Aspire One A0D150 weighs in at 2.95 pounds. Its relatively high screen resolution and substantial hard drive significantly improve on the features of previous Acer One models, while its $350 price tag keeps it eminently affordable. The $400 Gdium Liberty will ship (in April) with a bootable USB storage key--the G-Key--containing Mandriva G-Linux and more than 50 preinstalled open-source applications, including OpenOffice and Firefox.

HP Mini 2140

HP’s Mini 2140 netbook is a cool-looking, corporate take on a netbook. Here is what Mr. Ballmer had to say: "We've made a nice release announcement last week of Windows Mobile 6.5. We've got Windows Mobile 7 coming next year. We're getting more and more synergy with Windows, so the browser improvements, et cetera, should be quite rapid."

I'm a bit surprised WinMo 6.5 was announced last week, given no devices will ship until the fourth quarter of this year. Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) typically holds off announcing a new mobile platform until carriers are well into testing and devices are within three to four months of release. Once it was found out 6.5 was being announced at Mobile World Congress, I think most expected devices by late second quarter.

This has got to hurt sales of existing devices because, unlike PCs, being able to upgrade to the latest OS on a WinMo device is not a sure thing. In fact, it seems to be a fairly rare thing as many carriers and manufacturers don't fool with providing an upgrade, either free or for a nominal fee, so if someone really wants 6.5, they will buy nothing now. This is in stark contrast to how Apple does it. Users of the original iPhone are still getting OS updates from Apple, which is a model I'd like to see more device manufacturers follow.

Now Steve Ballmer has thrown a wrench into the works. Not only do we know 6.5 is out this year, WinMo 7 will be out within 12 months of that. This is a fast release cycle, as most WinMo upgrades are about 18 months apart at best.

I suspect there are a lot of people that have just recently purchased a WinMo 6 or 6.1 device that will just hang on to it longer and bypass 6.5. 7.0 is what has been rumored for over a year and 6.5 seemed to come out of nowhere as a stop-gap measure. We'll have to see if the sales of WinMo devices are hurt as people sit on the sidelines waiting for Windows Mobile 7 to start shipping devices. Via

The Six Egg Suitcase

When you leave your home you can carry a half-dozen eggs safely. "We have discovered that $7.99 to $9.99 is the max cost points for premium titles. And with more than 200 million sport traded over all stages, and 300 distinct ones accessible total, the developer has set its sites on the iPhone.

Recently, GameLoft disclosed that Apple had become its number one clientele, with 28 sport accessible on the platform. We talked to Gonzague de Vallois, GameLoft's Senior VP of Publishing, about what the business has wise from its achievement on Apple's ubiquitous wireless phone.

One of the large-scale obstacles with any new stage is getting snug with evolving for it; with all of the exclusive characteristics of the iPhone, the stage is absolutely no exception. Because of this, the most of GameLoft's early iPhone names were docks of sport on other systems.

With up of 4,000 sport accessible, it's clear that the iPhone is rapidly evolving a wireless gaming powerhouse. Having a large number of sport accessible absolutely assists, but as asserted by Vallois there is another component to GameLoft's success. "The key constituent to if a game does well easily boils down to quality."

Microsoft Won't Build Its Own Smartphone

By Antone Gonsalves
InformationWeek

Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer on Tuesday said the software maker does not intend to build its own smartphone to compete directly with the Apple iPhone, which currently has the "mojo" in the consumer market.

Instead, Microsoft will continue to focus on selling the software that runs in many devices and let the hardware vendors do the building, Ballmer said in a meeting with financial analysts in New York.
Microsoft, however, does not intend to compete with these vendors at the hardware level. "It is not our strategy to build our own phone," Ballmer said. "It's our strategy to build software that can stretch across many devices."

Ballmer said he expected price to become a leading differentiator in the smartphone market, and Apple sells a "very high-priced phone." Even though iPhones are available at a low price with a two-year service contract from wireless providers, the latter are also looking to make more money by paying less for the smartphone, Ballmer said.

Therefore, Microsoft believes it can make more money by offering Windows Mobile on low-end smartphones, as well as feature-rich models, Ballmer said. In that broader market, Google's open source Android operating system will be a competitor.

Microsoft is upbeat on future smartphone growth. While sales of mobile phones in general are likely to decrease, smartphone purchases will continue to increase, Ballmer said.

Earlier this month, Ballmer said at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, that Microsoft is changing the name of its mobile OS to Windows Phones. In addition, Microsoft plans to redesign its user interface, introduce an application store, and offer a content backup service in order to better compete with Apple, RIM, and Symbian, an OS used by the world's largest mobile phone maker, Nokia.

Apple's progress in the smartphone market is not the only area where it's challenging Microsoft. Ballmer said Apple in 2008 gained about a percentage in market share in the PC market.

While played down by Ballmer, the gain reflects the growing pressure Windows is under in the marketplace.

Ballmer acknowledged that Microsoft will be watching and responding to Apple's gains, which are mostly among consumers. "It's an interesting amount of market gain while not being as dramatic as some people might think," he said.

World’s biggest mobile phone show held in Barcelona

As you know that the world’s biggest wireless telephone happening took location last week in Barcelona, where the commerce revealed its newest innovations which, it wants, will propel demand through the international financial downturn.

The Mobile World Congress, from February 16 to 20, conveyed simultaneously 60,000 trade insiders from 1,200 businesses, as asserted by the organizers, the GSM Association.

All the foremost mesh operators like Vodafone, China Mobile and MTN were present, as well as handset manufacturers like Nokia and Samsung.
