Wow - it's been too long since I came here to post.

I think MANY people are opting to learn some real skills right now, given that the cost of college has gone up by leaps and bounds here in the US. Will a new President get elected that helps bring this cost down? That would be GREAT in my book. Some of the candidates really do care about that.

I believe in this. Journaling about other things can also be a good idea. I do this personally sometimes. I take spells of doing it. When I really need to wrap my mind around something for awhile, it helps to do lots of days of journalling, then go back to read how you first felt - - you can sometimes see a big change for the better while you realize that things are now better.

Voting, Nontraditional and other Students, seeking Scholarships, and a bit about the HUGE increase in College Tuition.

I often list interesting articles about college and also scholarships here.

I have not been doing much Scholarship Searching lately. But with the recent increases in school tuition nationwide, it seems like it would be a very good thing to do.

I would still like to find a scholarship, and take a class or two. Or maybe more. I have not done it yet though.

It seems that the Scholarship seeking world would be a LOT more crowded right now, but it's worth a try. My take. Fees are going up all over, because States are not subsidizing college and other schools as much. That money has to come from somewhere. And often, it is coming from the students themselves. We are becoming a nation of people who can't afford to go to college. Yes, scholarships are great. But some of them do not pay for everything. And you must win them to get them.

I hope that we can get State and National people in power to realize that schools are SO important. Education is also SO important, for all kinds of students. We need to offer college especially to worthy students who are not rich. It's just not right. We are wasting precious resources - - our young people. And they can wind up getting low-paying jobs and not being able to contribute more important things to our society. They just need education for a better job.

Another things I have been thinking about - voting. I hope I can convince somebody who did not vote before to get out soon and VOTE in the next elections. It's important for everyone going to school and going back to school.

Finding Scholarships
A guide tip: use the Search Box on the left side of this blog, called Freefind Site Search.

(You can see it right under the "Google Translate" section, on the left.)

For instance, if you search using "Music Scholarships" you will find this posting:

If you are already a student and taking classes, you can usually automatically apply for scholarships while re-registering for classes.

Get with your Advisor - - they may know of other avenues too.

NEVER pay to find scholarships. There are MANY ways to find them for free.

Are you in any clubs? They may also have scholarships.

Grants are also available from many sources.

One place that is fun to look through is the Dr. Torres site. They have many great links.

Today I will share some popular BIG scholarship lists here.

Don't be afraid to search yourself too.

Everyone is jumping on the "Find Scholarships" bandwagon.

Especially online websites. They are looking for you. Why? Because they want to make money guiding people to scholarships. There is BIG money in doing that. But don't give in to the big fees they want to charge you.

And it sounds tempting to let somebody else do the work for you. BUT you can save big, just going the work yourself.

Here are some tips to get started:

#1. Get organized - - keep a good file system, and this can get you started right.

#2. Only search with quality websites that do NOT charge you.

#3. Always go to the schools near you to see what scholarships, grants, fellowships, etc. they offer. Apply.

#4. Avail yourself of the free signups for scholarship search. Think: Fastweb and others.

#5. Don't give up. And keep an eye on deadlines. (AND fill out your FAFSA for more opportunities...)

#6. Student beware! Only accept scholarships from quality colleges that allow transfers. You'd be surprised how many people have been fooled by for-profit schools and now have almost worthless classes to show for it.

Age discounts can get you money too. At WKU, you can be 65 and save a lot.

WKU is located in Bowling Green, Kentucky. You still have to pay for some things though. No, it's not a scholarship, but you are getting a great deal like you would with a grant or scholarship.

And I'll bet that MAYBE a school near you might offer this too.

WKU explains more about that here at their FAQ page for their Adult Learning Services.

In accordance with KRS 164.284, Kentucky residents who are 65 years of age or older are granted free tuition for any undergraduate or graduate college class in which they enroll for credit or to audit. I have skimmed Twitter today and have a few interesting links for my readers. (Plus... how you can search there too...)

I am not putting in weird or dodgy links, or ones you have to sign up for or pay for, just ones that look good. (Of course!) AND I have found some nearby (WKU) ones I especially like. And just stuck one in here from Wisconsin too.

Read on to see how you can search Twitter anytime to find tweets you are looking for. (At the word: IMPORTANT further down on this posting).

But you may already be searching here regularly. I think it's definitely worth going to every so often.

These are just the tip of the iceberg of sites and scholarship and grant opportunities on Twitter every day. More and more colleges and universities are starting to get savvy about social media, and that is VERY good if you are searching.

I love art. So I want to put this information out there again.

Here is some advice and thoughts about going for an Art Scholarship. Definitely check the Art Department first, at the school you want to attend.

For example, check out the pages that are on the official website. I will do that for the Western Kentucky Art Department, just to see.

I first went to see what graduate courses they offer, and found many interesting ones - including Art Education (MAT = Master of Arts in Education - Art Education for Teacher Leaders) and also MA (Master of Arts, which does NOT have just plain Art in it.

This is good to know... of course, if you have been to college before, perhaps you did not complete a Major, so this could also be an option.

My next step was to search the site for just a Major, which is do-able for undergrads and also graduate students. Before doing that, you may want to check out Master's/Specialist programs for OTHER subjects you might also like.

Then find out what classes you might already have, and what scholarships or grants MIGHT be available for you. I searched on this site, and found various ideas. One is a Graduate Assistantship, and another is a Grant or Residency. I didn't see an Art Scholarship listed, so I searched just for that next. I found several different ones. Some are listed under the Department(s). Scrolling down the list, I found also "External" Scholarships and Fellowships, which are awarded to students going to any accredited institution. Some are for minorities, so read the fine print for sure.

I think personally it would be a good idea to make a Portfolio, online and portable, so that if you DO get an appointment to talk to professors or someone else in person or not about a Scholarship, you will be prepared and have something great to show. If you are good at more than one type of art, by all means have a few examples of each to show.

I don't have a big portfolio online. Just a few things. So, if you are like me, you will be doing this FIRST.

It's time. I thought about it myself, but want to wait a bit IF I go for a #scholarship or #grant.

Remember, NEVER pay to do your FAFSA. There are some companies that help, for a fee. But you don't need to go that way.

Roadblocks for Scholarship Seekers

If you are like me, dreaming about a scholarship is about the closest you will get to getting one this year. Why is that?

I think I can come up with several reasons for myself. I wonder if these are reasons others have too.

#1. If I spend the time on applying for a scholarship, it probably won't be me that is chosen. Reasons? Age, I won't be the best fit, I will answer a question wrong, or who knows.

#2. I am not sure I want to go back to school again anyhow.

#3. If I get a scholarship, I'm not sure how long it will continue.

#4. It will take such a long time to fill out the form(s), I don't know if it will even be worth it.

#5. I can't decide what KIND of scholarship I want.

Sound familiar? I write these partly because sometimes I actually think I should apply, even though I have made roadblocks for myself. Will I do it?

This week on Twitter - some new #scholarship links.

It's easy to find new scholarship listings on Twitter. Some are actually Scholarship companies that tweet about these, but others are students, and also schools.

So... like looking other places online, check who is posting, check for worthy posters, and do your homework on the kind of scholarships these are.

Exploring Music Scholarships online

Here are some great links and pages from quality sites for Music Scholarships.

Here is the famous Interlochan Scholarship:

Music Scholarships at Scholarships.com - there are many to choose from here and lots to browse too.

Berklee College of Music Scholarships - I don't know a lot about this school, but they have some funding you can access.

McNally Smith College of Music scholarship page - ditto.

The University of Utah College of Music scholarship page. They also have scholarships for Marching Band, I notice. This is a fun activity if you have not already tried it. I was in a Marching Band in college and met great friends there.

ASCAP Foundation Awards

Missouri Undergraduate programs

Do Google your area plus "Music Scholarships" and see what you get.

Interlochen Summer Programs: Scholarships and Financial Aid
(for High School students, I believe..)

From the website: "Interlochen's financial aid program is intended to help provide outstanding young artists some assistance to further their artistic development. Are you in any Groups or Clubs? You can check to see if they have any national Scholarships available. Some offer these to members, some to members' children also.

FAFSA - - a route to a scholarship and more, plus more .gov sites

For new readers: did you now that the official FAFSA form also is a source for local and national Scholarships and Grants?

You must go to the official website. Don't be fooled by other sites that insist you PAY for FAFSA information. Filling out your FAFSA is totally FREE.

Here is that link: https://fafsa.ed.gov/

A clue that this is the REAL, free site is the .gov on the end, showing it is a U.S. Government site.
