When you pour all of your heart and soul into something, magical things happen.

Here is the painting fresh off the easel created from a photo I took over the Summer in Upstate, NY while visiting gorgeous, Lake Ontario that owns a huge portion of my existence. And again I am reminded that what we do with our today, creates our tomorrow. We can Live into our dreams.

Right off the beautiful shores at Chimney Bluffs we got to witness this amazing sunset, in person from start to finish back in July of 2016 nearly 9 months ago. Sunset chasing never gets old and is a beautiful soul quenching experience every time.

To have been able to combine my love of watching & experiencing a sunset along with my love of the area and painting equals the best of ALL worlds.

I am proud to now present Lake Sunset Painting No. 1. Titled simply because the work speaks for itself and I know that it is the beginning of many more to come. These are fresh Spring Pics in the Raw.

Lake Sunset No. 1

30" x 40" Oil on Canvas

Also for the fun of it. I created this lil matching painting it measures 2.5" x 3.5" oil on canvas. I'm not sure if I am going to keep this lil guy or include it for the seller.

To purchase please follow this link!

Alongside creating these works I also have created 36 matching find the beautiful rings and some extras for a grand total of 47 FTB rings to be freely dispersed into Nature and given away online :) Read the full article here.

Up next: I have been Waterfall Wednesdaying and it has done wonders for my creativity and rejuvenation. I want to share that experience with you. As some of you know I have been hiking to the wonderful waterfalls that surround me in North East Ohio taking pics, dropping ftb rings and sucking in the magic. (Follow on snapchat @ftbeautiful )

Now it's time to paint and share these experiences with you and encourage you to get outside in your local area, because I can't tell you how many people I have met and friends I have that wonder where I go and are shocked when I tell them these places are in your backyard in the Cuyahoga Vallery National Park, Summit County Metroparks, and Cleveland Metroparks as well as off the slightly beaten unmarked path. Until then Much Love, Rebecca Subscribe to Follow and for your chance to win your free findthebeautiful ring.

I am very excited. This is truly the most fun part of being an artist. I have just finished making 47 original, handpainted FTB, find the beautiful rings! This batch includes 36 that have been painted with the same colors and paint, that I used to make Lake Sunset No. 1. and in going forward I plan on making new batches alongside whichever painting I am working on. Using that palettes colors to paint the rings. Offering yet another way to connect you to the artwork and artist. They are ready to be dropped in random locations outside in Nature and to be randomly given away! I can't express the true joy I receive in giving these away. Sometimes I hear from the finders sometimes I don't. Each one is placed with the hope that whoever finds it is meant to find it. And that, that person may need or knows someone who needs a reminder that there is always something to be thankful for in this beautiful, beautiful gift we have called life!

I strongly believe that no matter what you're going through if you look at YOUR LIFE with gratitude, it will begin to open up your heart and eyes to see everything you have to be thankful for and that gratitude will begin to fill your heart and guide you to better moments and better days.

These FTB rings as I call them can be carried in your pocket, worn on a necklace, on a key chain or however you feel you need to. They can be used as a viewfinder held up and looked through to see what's beautiful in your life. They are little reminder charms in service to you. And it is my hope they can spark gratitude in your heart.

I have been giving these away for years now as early as 2010, I've lost track how many. These 47 rings are free and are excited to be found. I am going to be randomly giving 23 rings away online to subscribers/followers and dropping 24 in Nature. In order to have a chance at winning one of these online you only need to subscribe to my email list , like findthebeautiful on facebook and follow findthebeautiful on instagram for extra chances.

Honestly, my family is spoiled living only 10 minutes away from this treasure in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. We have visited more times than I can count throughout all the varied weather that Northeast Ohio can throw at us. All year long and through all conditions, we make the hike around Brandywine Falls. It is a fairly easy and only a thigh burner on the way back around to the trailhead. It is refreshing and well worth viewing the falls and Brandywine creek from so many different scenic vantage points.

ON THIS particular day it was a fair 54° and we were certainly in the adventuring mood. The falls were raging and we made the trek. What's beautiful is every time you go you are greeted with new surprises. Being it was an early March day we had the place to ourselves I believe there was one car in the parking lot which on some picturesque days reaches capacity. We got some great shots from the top and after making our way down to the lower platform were able to safely get all the way down to the base.

Feeling the spray from the falls at the base and getting soaked was an amazing and invigorating experience.

The only route we haven't taken is directly upstream, crossing the shredder swimming area the local scouts have fun at in the Summer. We are well poised to complete this memorable meander this upcoming Spring or Summer, allowing us to capture additional memories, photo's and experiences.

<--This is the expression of invigorating joy on my son's face!

Safety First!

If you leisurely take this path plan on spending at least an hour to take in all the beauty.

*Note occasionally due to weather the lower deck is closed for safety during the Winter months.

Expect more seasonal updates. This adventure is, to be continued.

Absolutely worth the hike!

If you are looking for a beautiful and rewarding hike I definitely recommend taking the time to adventure yourself to Buttermilk Falls to go waterfalling, located in Boston Township, Ohio

Day 1: Feb. 8th, 2017 54°

I first made the hike to Buttermilk Falls on February 8th, 2017 after hearing about it's existence from fellow nature lovers. It's a nice 20 minute hike one way past Blue Hen Falls The trail is well worn but is not marked nor mentioned near the Blue Hen signage at the trail head and is why a lot of fellow waterfallers have trouble finding it or even hearing about it. Come to find out it is not listed anywhere in the cvnp maps because it is not officially a part of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park due to that fact that it is actually located on Boston Mills property.

As I made my way down the path past Blue Hen Falls, I enjoyed the full forest and solitude. It was a mild February day, temps were in the 50s which made for a pleasant experience.

You have to cross the stream a few times so I definitely recommend wearing waterproof over the ankle boots! I have a great pair of Merrell boots that stood the test of the icy frigid waters and mud.

The stream was shallow and gently moving along. After passing a nice clearing I heard the falls gentle rush before I could actually see it. Once upon it I was awed by the view. You can literally step into the stream and look down thru the gorge.

After taking a ton of photo's I made my way down to the bottom following an easy natural path. Once I rounded the bend I was rewarded again with a stunning view. I don't believe this stream ever gets very heavy. The steady flow of water trickling and dancing across the shale was breathtaking.

It was a serene moment and honestly, I could have stayed here all day. Inspiring, to say the least I wished I had had my painting gear with me or a book or a journal or something to express how much gratitude was oozing from my pores.

Buttermilk Falls Day 2: The Next Day February 9th Temp 28°

As they say in Cleveland wait 5 minutes and the weather will change.

All I have to say is as soon as I woke up and saw the snow blanketing the ground I threw my boots on and like a lover in love, I ran to be back by this waterfalls side.

It was the most amazingmagicalspiritualadventure I have had in a long time. Thankfully I had gone the day before because the path was covered in snow and I wouldn't have found my way because no one had headed out there yet. I saw three deer and honestly was in HEAVEN. I got some great pictures and stayed as long as I could. When I regretfully headed back it began to snow really hard and I experienced another moment of Heaven. Not a sound to be heard other than the snow gently falling to the ground.

This hike gets a 10 out of 10 for me! and I can't wait to go back!

A Short Guide to Understanding Plein Air Art

“Every second of life is unique, no two are the same and are more precious than snowflakes.”

Understanding Plein Air Art

A short guide wrote by Rebecca Grantham (Originally wrote in 2005, freshly updated 2017)

The definition of plein air or en plein air:

Plein Air is a French phrase that translates "in the open air". Plein air is pronounced plan air or sometimes plane air. This term is used to describe artworks that have been created chiefly outdoors, rather than in the studio. Photo reference is generally not used.

The roots of plein air painting:

Are found In 19th-century Europe with John Constable and the Barbizon group near France. With the invention of portable pigments, artists took their sketchbooks in hand and traveled outside to paint and draw nature on site. Their combined efforts laid the groundwork for the impressionist giants, Claude Monet, Edouard Manet, Winslow Homer, Camille Pissarro, and John Singer Sargent. Who challenged and revolutionized the application of paint and the truth of how the eye saw form, light, and color within artistic interpretation.

Plein air's modern popularity:

Has been aided by the development of easily portable painting equipment and materials. Such as the pochade box and the wonderful ingenuity of artists, from using mint tins and tackle boxes to house their paint and supplies. Whatever they can pack their art supplies into they do and then they go outside into the wild and find their inspiration. Artists continue to invent ways to transport themselves and their supplies to a site that begs to be captured.

Terminology:

Alla Prima: Is a title given to artworks that are created completely, in one session on site, from start to finish.
Completed On-site: Is to be used for a work of art where more than one session is needed to complete the piece on site, there should be no more work done once the painting has left the original location.

There are still some works that can be considered plein air where no more than 10% of the finished work is completed away from the inspiration in the studio. It is up to the artist to specifically and honestly describe their work, and state the plein air level of completion regarding their completed artwork.

What subject matters qualify?

Any and all outdoor, on-site works. Contemporary plein airists create abstracts, cityscapes, landscapes, portraiture, figurative, poetry and wildlife.

What styles qualify?

With the freedom and creativity of today, plein air works can be very representational, impressionistic, figurative, romantic, luminous, poetic and even abstract.

What medium is primary to plein air?

There are no rules in art or plein air creating. Paper, canvas, pen & ink, scratch boards, oil, acrylic, watercolor paints, hard/soft/oil pastel, colored pencils, crayons truly any medium can be used. The method is left to the artist to choose their weapon for executing the changing moments they are after.

Why outside? wouldn't it be easier to work from a photograph?

Sure it would be easier to work from a photo, but that would take the life and fun out of why you would choose plein air to begin with. It would defeat the entire purpose. The difference between working plein air and from a photograph are akin to the difference between seeing your favorite band live in concert or just a listening to a recorded version. If you have ever been to a live concert of your favorite musician you know the difference in the life and energy of that experience. This is the same for the artist creating. The living energy of the moments they are experiencing if done well, transfers itself onto and into the artwork.

Plein air painting is a passion like none other.

It takes complete concentration to the point of unawareness of self or unconscious absentness. It takes training every sensory nerve to a level of heightened awareness of time, color, light, temperature, sound, sight, atmosphere, and emotion. It takes unparalleled translation from eye, to head, to spirit, to hand, to canvas.

"There are no two seconds alike in nature or life!"

"A leaf steps with the wind in time, the clouds move swiftly across the sky trailing their shadows across the land, light, dark, bright, calm. Flitter-flutter flower petals brush against each other and whisper "try to catch me". Peek a boo, Look up, the sun has moved, see how the shadows have changed. "

Like a great waltz or a supreme game of tag.. these are the results of an artist and nature combined.

It is these premises that spring forth such gorgeous and timeless works, that reach far beyond their frames into the hearts and spirits of the artists, viewers and collectors alike. Rebecca Grantham 17'

To create and give is the greatest gift.

I'm sure many of you are familiar with the famous Footprints poem, if not I am going to include it here, it is worth repeating. (although the true author is somewhat of a mystery)

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed He was walking along the beach with the LORD. Across the sky flashed scenes from His life. For each scene He noticed two sets of footprints in the sand. One belonging to Him and the other to the LORD.

When the last scene of His life flashed before Him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of His life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times of His life.

This really bothered Him and He questioned the LORD about it. LORD you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me.

The LORD replied, my precious, precious child, I Love you and I would never leave you! During your times of trial and suffering when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.

Nonetheless, This beautiful work has come back into my life after some friends reached out and asked that I make a painting that both symbolizes "Footprints" and stands on it's own as a work of art.

I couldn't wait, I was both honored and excited. Time slid comfortably by as I worked on it and as much as this finished painting was a gift to them it was an even bigger gift to me.

In more ways than I can fully explain, the poem, the actual subject matter (I love water, oceans, lakes, rivers, streams, waterfalls etc being by them and painting them,) the service through doing what I love, lifting someone up and bringing them true joy and how this came out of no where.

Out of darkness a way was made and reminds me of how Thoreau says, "I learned this, at least, by my experiment; that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.

Honestly this painting hits on everything that truly fulfills my spirit. To be called to this service, to give a gift created from my heart that brings someone tears of joy... magical, mystical, surprising, joy, thankfulness, gratitude, honor, and speechlessly humbled.

Tomorrow Begins with Today
Original oil on canvas 36" x 48" x 1.5"

This painting was inspired with eyes wide open as I drove home. The Winter sunlight was rhythmically flashing through the trees across the highway. Creating almost a melody of light and dark. As I came to a stop I captured the inspirational moment with my camera and used it create this work. The title is still relevant today.

Throughout the process of creating this painting, I kept thinking about how our actions create our now. What we see, what we do, how we think, what we say, what we read, what we eat..... all of this and more creates our life tomorrow. All in today. All in the Now. If we can grasp this concept, it grounds us in the accountability of our lives. While also makes each moment more textural and more alive.

I recently read a great book titled the Power of Now, by Eckhart Tolle sometime after this painting was made and the words ring so true to what I was already experiencing.
This book has stayed with me greatly and expanded my urgent belief in how important the choices we make are in every moment of our lives. This painting is a symbol of that thought in action. And even now after this painting was created I think back to all the good that has come out of it so far.

Find the Beautiful "Rings", are simple, they are 1.5" washers with the words find the beautiful written on them. Simple. Yes. But they are so much more.

They are a reminder to be carried in your pocket, worn on a necklace, proclaimed on a hoodie, put on a wall or just inside your heart. That there is always something to be thankful for.

They are something that has grown out of my desire to inspire you to find the beautiful in your life.

I probably started making these at least 6 or 7 years ago.... I needed something at the time to hang onto that gave me a measure of hope. I wore it on a long chain attached to my belt loop and tucked it into my pocket.

When I needed to, I would hold onto it. It was just a simple washer with the words find the beautiful that I had written on t. iNo one knew, I didn't share it with anyone. It was personal. And I needed it. I don't remember where the idea came from honestly. But I held onto it for dear might and it saw me through some challenging times.

If you are at a point in life where hope and beauty are just wishes made in the dark.

Find the Beautiful will bring light into the darkness. It will bring you new eyes and freshness to your heart.

This world is gorgeous, look to the blue hues at dusk as one example- exhilarating! This website is here to walk with you and show you how beautiful this life is. To encourage you, Now... is all we have.

So many people get caught in the repetition of their lives and they lose their curiosity. They just don't look up or around themselves anymore. They go through the motions of their lives just as is.. floating along and not living. Numb to the gratitude of being alive. There is so much goodness here. Right here, right where you are, right now. No matter where you live or what you're going through. It is a beautiful, beautiful world and it is true that when you smile at the world, the world smiles back.

This website is dedicated to serving you, bringing you gratitude, beauty, and hope. To inspire you with the reminder that there is so much to be thankful for and once you crack open that door to the light, it spills over into all areas of your life.

I promise you, that if you start looking for the beautiful in your life, you will find it.

Also a great addition to find the beautiful are the wonderful thoughtful images I receive.
Who Inspires you? Who do you find beautiful? This is an easy one for me. My crew (my kids that is), are my who and also my why.

As John Muir Says "The sun shines not upon us but in us." Couldn't have said it better myself. My daughter's smile out shines the sun. I love the pure joy. The innocence they have and their resiliency.

Try saying it.......Exuuuuuuuuuuddde Gratituuuuude. It honestly feels so good to say and do. Thankfulness is one of the foundations for a beautiful life. And when you can reach a place of gratitude within your heart and soul, everything changes. Your patience increases, your understanding expands and the entire world around you becomes a more beautiful place. You become a light in the darkness. Don't be afraid to shine! The world needs you.

When you smile the world smiles with you. Again and Again. The more you give gratitude away the more it returns to you, so that you may give even more away. It's a beautiful cycle.

You are invited to come along with find the beautiful and join a movement that encourages and inspires gratitude. And I promise the more we give away, the more we receive. If it was up to me I'd give it all away, with an open hand.
