About the Author

Michael W. Maher, Ph.D., is Professor of Management and Accounting and Associate Dean for Faculty at the Graduate School of Management at the University of California, Davis. He received his bachelor's degree in accounting from Gonzaga University and his MBA and Ph.D. from the University of Washington (Seattle). He has experience in public accounting, has co-managed his own business, and consulted with numerous companies and governmental bodies. Dr. Maher is active in the Management Accounting Section of the American Accounting Association, including service as president. He has co-authored numerous books and published articles in numerous journals.

Clyde P. Stickney is the Signal Companies' Professor of Management, Emeritus at the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration, Dartmouth College. He received his DBA from Florida State University and taught at the University of Chicago and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before joining the Tuck School in 1977. He has also taught at business schools in Japan, Australia, Finland, and Germany. Prof. Stickney has authored and coauthored books on financial accounting, managerial accounting, and financial statement analysis.

Roman L. Weil, Ph.D., CPA, is the V. Duane Rath Professor Emeritus of Accounting at the University of Chicago and has within recent years been Visiting Professor at the Haas School of the University of California, Berkeley; Carnegie Mellon University; Harvard Law School; Princeton University; and New York University. He has designed and implemented continuing education programs for partners at two of the large accounting firms and for employees at several operating corporations. Dr. Weil has co-authored dozens of books. His lay articles have appeared in Barron's and The Wall Street Journal. He has published more than 80 articles in academic and professional journals, most recently on financial literacy for corporate governance and on the exposure of wine snobbery.

As a professor who teaches this topic at both the undergraduate and graduate level, I feel that this text is without a doubt the most cleanly written and well thought-out text there is on this topic. While you might find books out there that are more comprehensive and attempt to cover more material, and ones that might delve into levels of detail and complication in terms of computations, there is simply none better in terms of readability. As a Socratic professor, this is KEY to having my students fully prepared for class.

If you are looking for a "how to" style book with a "preparer emphasis" however, I recommend you look elsewhere to something like Hansen, Noreen or Garrison. The focus on this book is DISTINCTIVELY critical thinking and problem solving concepts, which can be frustrating if you are looking for a "how to manual". Instead, this book focuses on the "why", and does leave more of the "how" to the student and professor than many others.

I don't know how Karla Williams managed to distill decades of wisdom into fewer than 250 pages in her book (well, I really do know: she's at the top of our profession as leader, teacher and holder of the ACFRE credential).

Karla takes four key words and plays off of them: Essence, Enigma, Energy and Effect. But the one word that is key is Energy, which she applies to fundraising leadership and practice. Executive leaders need to understand that there are positive attitudes and negative attitudes that come into play. I have seen this in my own work where a top executive admin ungraciously spurned fundraisers trying to see the CEO.

Don't be fooled by chapters titled Philanthropy Concepts, Development Concepts, Relationship Concepts and Solicitation Concepts. After a brief introduction to the topic, Karla delves deeply into the subject, as befits the knowledge level required of a CEO.

John A. Tracy is a former accountant and professor of accounting. He is also the author of Accounting For Dummies.
This book is great (I mean great) if you need to understand what is profit, whats in a balance sheet, how to understand it, whats in an income statement. What are assets, etc, etc. This book will open your eyes. Like others have said its not about double entry bookkeeping, or how to prepare your balance sheet. Find that elsewhere. This book addresses what the numbers mean and how to follow them to come to conclusions and how to use that information.

Let me put it this way. If you have a small business, or are put into a position where you need to manage money for a business, or need to buy a business. This book will help you if your not accountant savy.
Its a great book, and is very well written. Another five star success for the dummies series.

This text is designed to accomplish two major objectives: success in dictation and in transcription. Each lesson is divided into two parts. The first provides students with preview words to assure that dictation speed is attainable; the second develops specific skills needed in the transcription process.

I used this book before and found it excellent. I did not carry through with practicing, so I am back with the book again. I was/am very pleased with it.

Con: My only nitpick is the colored background (dark blue with black fonts) which sometimes makes it difficult to read. But otherwise, it is an excellent book and still worth 5 stars.

Almost like the one I had in high school - soon to be a lost art! so I decided to refresh myself so I can use it in meetings - you know the boring ones so that the person next to you has no idea what you are writing. love confusing people!!

I was thankful to be able to purchase this at such an inexpensive price. The wear was reflected accurately in the description and in the price.

I am really impressed with the complexity of this book and the simple nature in which it is written. The authors take a somewhat complex topic and make it easily understood. I feel that I now have a much better understanding of the net lease investment market and the ability to intelligently begin investing in this property type.

I have spent the greater portion of my career in finance. However, I have never been exposed to net lease investments. This book introduced me to the asset type and how to methodically underwrite the asset. I applaud the authors for making this an easy and informative read. They seem to be true professionals.

The Goldwater-Nichols Department of Defense Reorganization Act of 1986 is the most important legislation to affecting U.S. national defense in the last 50 years. This act resulted from frustration in Congress and among certain military officers concerning what they believed to be the poor quality of military advice available to civilian decision-makers. It also derived from the U.S. military's perceived inability to conduct successful joint or multi-service operations. The act, passes after four years of legislative debate, designated the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff as the principal military advisor to the President and sought to foster greater cooperation among the military services. Goldwater-Nichols marks the latest attempt to balance competing tendencies within the Department of Defense, namely centralization versus decentralization and geographic versus functional distributions of power.

As a result of the Goldwater-Nichols Act, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs has achieved prominence, but his assignment is somewhat contradictory: the spokesman and thus the advocate for the Commander in Chief, while simultaneously the provider of objective advice to the President. While the act did succeed in strengthening the CINCs' authority and in contributing to the dramatic U.S. achievements in the Gulf War, the air and ground campaigns revealed weaknesses in the CINCs' capability to plan joint operations. In addition, the increased role of the military in ad hoc peacekeeping operations has challenged the U.S. military's current organizational structure for the quick deployment of troops from the various services. Rapid technological advances and post-Cold War strategic uncertainty also complicate the U.S. military's organizational structure.

If you are looking for complete and concise information to evaluate a client's potential claim, and to determine whether pursuit of a qui tam action is warranted, purchase this book. This handy guide provides an overview of the statute and highlights some of the more common and controversial topics including, but not limited to: Submitting false cost and pricing data, Providing an inferior product, Falsely certified medical procedures, Tax law, Parasitic suits

This is the book to get before you go start any whistleblowing actvity that involves corporate corruption against the Federal contracts. Great advice on what to realistically expect and what you can do and not do to get rewarded with money for whistleblowing on the crooks. Better and cheaper than an attorney visit for understanding Qui tam claim and a great way to prepare an attorney for Qui Tam action. Qui tam lawsuits can be very lucrative and you can do a public service as well. Blow that whistle!

Sure, you can subscribe to advance sheets (been there, done it), email-based mailing lists (been there, done that, too; National Law Journal has a nice mailing list), and the like, but it simply won't match up to having something solid you can put in your hand, and carry with you where you go.

I wish there were a hardcover option though. If it's only paperback, I will end up destroying it after a year or two, simply from thumbing through the pages over and over again, and underlining all the passages I find most relevant.

Rebecca West's book has a better, smaller typeface (probably 4.6 point) and typesetting layout (not the capacious 1.75 spaces per line that Doyle's has ; he must have been padding his pamphlet with extra spacing to "fill" things out so the student can have room to write in the margins, West's is laid out much more legibly). And while both pamphlets have "perfect" (glue) binding, West's appears to have been better collated (sorted and laid out before binding and trimming). All in all, this booklet was done better than Doyle's.

I just purchased and read the book "The Whistleblowers Handbook" and I found it a remarkably practical guide that validated many of the conclusions that I have had to make in the (so far) two year process of seeking remedy to my retaliation. I wish I had had this two years ago when I started. It is detailed and technical enough to be useful in a practical way and written in such a way a to be understandable by non-attorneys.

I have had a Whistleblower Case pending as a federal employee over retaliation for the disclosure of laws, rules, and regulations to the agency Inspector General. I wish so much I had had this book when I initiated my complaint.

It was most discouraging (but unfortuantely accurate as I have come to understand it) to see Mr. Kohn describe the federal employees Whistleblower Protection Act as "...generally considered to be one of the weaker whistleblower laws..."

It was most encouraging to go thru Checklist 5 (Proof of Retaliation) and be able to check off most of the indicators their as relevent to my case. The six checklists by themselves are worth the price of the book for any Federal Whistleblower attemtping to advocate for themself Pro Se.

This is a great and practical guide that I wish I had 2 years ago, but that I think will now assist greatly in focusing my activities and help me in understanind how to best advocate for my self as my case progresses.

Richard Stiennon did not help my ulcers when he worked for me at Gartner. Attempting to manage this guy was very challenging when I was a Managing VP supervising the security team. But he was a damn fine analyst. His book demonstrates how Richard has turned his unique talents to analyzing the analyst business, and in particular, in providing sound advice to market players seeking favorable position on Gartner's infamous Magic Quadrant, the Forrester Wave and the equivalent vendor evaluations from some of the smaller research houses.

But keep in mind that these firms all have other publications, and so Richard's tips for influencing the analysts have broad applicability to a wide range of reports, as well as analyst interactions with clients through inquiry, "consults," one-on-ones or other exchanges with end-users and the buyers of technology products and services.

At the end of the day, the vendor focused research is the equivalent of a Consumers' Report on technology. Playing the game well is the advice Richard's book provides, and it does that comprehensively and admirably.

BTW, my ulcers healed sometime after Richard (and I) left the company. I feel much better now, but miss him and am glad to see him "around" at various conferences and et cetera.

The other day I was waiting to give a talk on cyber security and listening to another speaker before me. A question came from the audience that refuted the speaker's statements. The audience member said, "Well, EVERYONE knows that x, y, z is true." I blurted out from my seat, "I know that what you are claiming is supposedly conventional wisdom, but how do you know that?" She said, "Analyst firm "X" wrote it in a paper, so it must be accurate." But of course, there is ample evidence and research to the contrary from other from non-industry analysts.

Certainly, there are many brilliant people working in the ranks of analyst firms, and some excellent reports are published every week from numerous firms. But some aspects of the model are completely broken. I think it's time to consider "term limits" for some analyst positions so that they can stay fresh and unbiased, as well as think about the need for some firms to consider divesting consulting practices when they make assertions regarding being vendor agnostic. Also, there are inherent challenges in a model in which firms accept hundreds of thousands of dollars from both enterprise customers and vendors and attempt to remain completely impartial.

Richard's book is timely, thought provoking and a must-read for any IT exec who is trying to determine how to weigh the value of research firm opinions in the decision support process.

I just finished reading the book and I was really impressed with the practical value that is given. Of course I know that the main reason that software projects fail is because of the fact that they are estimated in an optimistic way, usually relying on nothing more than an 'experts' opinion. This book will help any project manager or other project stakeholder to estimate a project in a realistic way, therefore reducing the risk of failure enormously.

The book explains the art of macro software estimation, based on sound theoretical models combined with the incredible power of the repositories of real data submitted by best-in-class companies from all over the globe. The book explains how to use these models and how to use the data. A large number of software estimation equations are given, just like that. Usually cost engineers and parametric analysts would have to study the data for a long time before deriving the equations. The appendices give some great insight into the cost drivers of software projects, listing for instance productivity figures (and distribution!!) per programming language, development platform, industry type, application type, team size, architecture, etc.

Criminal Law Hornbooks ( 5th Updated Edition ) Major emphasis is placed on the basic premises of criminal law, including its sources and general limitations. This Hornbook provides detailed discussion on the topics of responsibility, justification and excuse, inchoate crimes, accomplice, and liability. Attention is also given to subjects such as causation, insanity, and conspiracy.

First of all, this book is aesthetically beautiful which is what made me look at it in the first place. But way more importantly, it is excellent for covering everything you need to know for a criminal law course. A lot of students are drawn away from this book and other hornbooks because they are almost the same size as a casebook. Even though its longer and bigger than a glannons or E+E, it covers every subject you will go over in your 1L crim law class. It also gives you the big picture about the revolution of a law, the policy reasons behind it, elements of a rule, factors the court look at, etc. If you have any question about something in class, this book will probably have an answer for you. Another thing that is very useful is that the book does a good job at distinguishing the common law vs. MPC and statutory differences for rules. Since criminal law is such a statutory based subject, sometimes it is difficult to know what rule to use or how to find the majority or minority views, but this book will let you know all of it. I highly recommend it especially if you are interested in going into criminal law or want to know more about it.

Wow, this book is incredible. Dense? Yes. Difficult and overwhelming? Of course. But it is the most effective and most authoritative book on crim law for a first year law student out there. I read Understanding Criminal Law by Dressler (which probably was the best decision seeing as Dressler wrote my case book) throughout the semester and had a decently solid grasp on the material. But I was by no means confident going into the exam. I picked this hornbook up about four days before the final and literally only studied this while looking at class notes and previous exams sparingly. I was immersed in LaFave's writing and evident mastery of the subject. Some people shy away from the hornbook's heavy in citations and indeed, this one has some pages that are almost entirely citations, but those type of real examples of cases are what help me understand the topics.

After completing the exam I felt awful. I thought reviewing almost exclusively with this hornbook was a terrible idea because my review also encompassed a lot of relearning that could have been better spent looking over the notes and cases I already had instead of typing up new ones into my outline. Man, was I wrong. I got several key ideas from this book that I inserted into my outline when taking the exam and I ended up finishing in the top 10% of this class. Keep in mind, crim was a class I struggled with the entire time. Simply put, this book was a game changer and I highly recommend it to be used as a primer during the semester or just when reviewing for finals like I did. It is no substitute for keeping up with the class material but there is nobody better than LaFave when it comes to crim and it is always helpful to learn from the best.

The book describes the land sales with the companies that sold the deeds and the adventures the settlers found fighting with Native Americans, the British, and the Pennsylvanians. The three Yankee -Pennamite Wars between the Connecticut settlers, joined by the Paxtang Gang from Pennsylvania, versus Pennsylvanians are presented.

While the Connecticut settlers did well in the battles and had the deeds first, Congress decided that geography was more important and the land was declared a part of Pennsylvania. The subsequent squabbles over who had proper deeds to be filed with Pennsylvania resulted. While much of the book presents lists from found records once believed lost, which has a limited interest, the descriptions in presenting this history are excellent.

I really enjoyed this book. It has a lot of information packed into it, but it is all useful information without the filler that is found in so many. The layout is nice, which I appreciate. It has a lot of images/charts/etc and separators and margins that are a little bit wide to write brief notes in (not extremely wide, but the text is not to the edge of the page). It makes it much easier to read that way.

The information was quite helpful. There is a lot of terminology in this book, but the author uses examples of cases to explain how the different laws came about, and is very detailed and descriptive of the different court terminology.

I would definitely recommend this book. I will be keeping it after school, and especially due to its thin size, it will be even easier to keep.

I've been a litigation paralegal for 20 years and I consider this book the "Holy Grail" regarding e-discovery for any new attorney and/or paralegal. It's a must-buy/read.
