I just started looking at my AirTran Visa again as a way to pick up some quick one way airfare on AirTran. The card gives you credits that automatically exchange for AirTran Rewards points every time you get 1,000 credits. You earn credits by charging on the card in the following manner....

1 Point for every $2.00 (Purchases)
1 Point for every $1.00 (Partner Purchases)

Partner purchases are AirTran tickets of course, but I'm more interested in the regular purchase benefit.

I can pay most of my bills on the card now and then take my income to pay off the card every month. That means that if I put $4,000 of purchases on my AirTran Visa every month, I will get 2000 credits on the card each month that will automatically convert to 2 AirTran Rewards points. That means a free one way every 4 months and it also puts me that much closer to elite status.

Low cost carriers like Southwest and Jet Blue have rapidly expanded their services the past few years. By providing cheap airfares and convenient itineraries, they have established themselves as discount airlines. But do they have the cheapest airfare?

The truth is that low cost airlines don't always offer the cheapest airfare. That's because traditional airlines, which have spent the past few years in bankruptcy court slashing their own expenses, are working hard to match or undercut their low-cost rivals to profit more in the end. And though some airlines generally have lower operating costs than traditional airlines, they're feeling the rise of fuel prices too. That means you shouldn't immediately eliminate.

If you're cold, and looking for cheap flights to somewhere warm, here's some sunny advice...

Part of the trick to finding super cheap flights is to know exactly the best time to shop for cheap airfare. Some airlines announce their cheap flights on Friday night or in the very early hours of Saturday morning (Saturday morning is a particularly good time to find airline tickets for less than 100 bucks).

Another things to consider when trying to find the cheapest airfare is what time of year is best for air travel and what day of the week is best to leave on. Obviously, off-season and mid-week departures work best here.

The most important thing in getting a good airfare however is that you book your reservation well in advance. Last minute airfare purchases can cost you a small fortune because the supply of seats is low - in general, airlines are much more likely to offer great deals on flights that haven’t sold any tickets yet!

Airfare Searches and Tiny Fonts

Wonder if any of my readers are having any difficulty in focusing their eyes on airfare search engine results?

Kayak's airfare search engine for example is second to none, but their output (the airfare search results) are almost impossible to see without changing the font on my browser. I use Firefox and I can get a boost by using the control + shortcut. When I do that, everything else looks weird though.

Is anybody else frustrated by this or do I just need glasses? I read Eric Hammer's favorable review of Zenni Optical today and he's all over their cheap eyeglass solution. According to Hammer, Zenni sells basic prescription eyeglasses for as little as 8 dollars per pair - pretty darn good when others are charging over a hundred dollars for the same thing.

Is a round trip nonstop flight from San Francisco California to Sydney Australia a good deal at $350?

Probably not....

While the search engine pulls it up at $350, mandatory government taxes, a fuel charge, baggage fees, and a 9/11 security fee push the final purchase price to a whopping $669.50.

Even better, if you fly in their “Business Select Class” you get a double credit for each flight. Translation… you’ll get a free round trip ticket with only 4 round trips!
Southwest does things differently than most airlines. This article highlights my favorite differences in their Reward programs

The Rapid Rewards “Companion Ticket”
When you accumulate 100 credits within in a year at Southwest (within any 12 consecutive months), you get a “companion pass” which allows your companion to fly with you for FREE – and it lasts for a whole year! Yep, the companion pass works every time your companion checks in and travels with you on the same flight – even if you’re traveling on an award ticket. The pass has no blackout dates or seat restrictions.

Oh, and you can change your companion up to three times during the year by notifying Southwest.

Less Hassle | Less Restrictions

Another super website for last minute travel has a similar name but is entirely different. Like lastminute.com, lastminutetravel.com allows you to purchase hotel, airfare, cruises, rental cars, and total package deals. It doesn't have the "last second deals" option, but it does have some terrific last second deals. From a marketing perspective, I like their idea of separating out the fire sales and the slow moving inventory to put an added spotlight on those deals.

Lastminutetravel.com also has an interesting feature called "last minute deals in advance.” These are not really last minute deals at all but simply spotlighted or featured deals that you can book any time. There don’t seem to be any additional discounts for these deals.

Conclusion
If you know the various places to look, you will find very discounted deals on airfare and airfare packages. The recent rise in last minute travel popularity has spawned many a website for this travel niche.

It’s important to note that in most cases, last minute travel is way to expensive. If you’re flexible and willing to wait and see what is available within 2 days however, you can really find some amazing airfare deals.

Just a slight detour from finding the cheapest airfare, cheap flights and the like for a little editorializing...

The "Miracle on the Hudson" began with a shuddering bang and bright blue flames shooting from the engines of USAirways Flight 1549. The plane was losing altitude but it appeared that the pilot was still in control. Then, a flight attendant dashed down the aisle in search of a fire extinguisher and panic spread as the passengers realized their lives were in grave danger.

Vallie Collins quickly pressed out a text message to her husband and hit send. The text... "my plane is crashing." Then came the haunting warning from the cockpit..."brace for impact."

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!

James 5:16 says "the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." I choose to believe that the plane's smooth landing and the successful rescue efforts afterward are indeed the result of answered prayer - that prayer did indeed "avail much." The newscasters were quick to label it the "Miracle on the Hudson," and it was indeed a miracle that ANYONE survived. As a Christian, I thank God that these precious lives were miraculously spared. Absolutely amazing...

I just checked an Austin to San Jose trip. The round trip airfare was $249 but a one-way airfare was well over $700! On an international trip from Tokyo to Las Vegas, the round trip airfare was $930 but a one-way $1720.

Buying a round trip ticket doesn't obligate you to return. Just toss the unused ticket in the trashcan and stay as long as you would like!

Generally speaking, flights are cheapest when tickets are purchased at least 21 days in advance of the flight. This is just a general rule of thumb of course - the truth is that the airlines change the fare almost daily. The daily fluctuation in airfare is influenced by a number of variables not known to the public and you can get lucky and find a bargain basement airfare just days in advance.
