Canon City Swimming Pool

I'm not sure what screams summer more than swimming at the local "watering hole." So the opening of the Canon City Swimming Pool is the unofficial start of summer for the kids in our city.

Growing up as a competitive swimmer, I spent a lot of time at a lot of different pools. I'm not sure that I've ever been to two pools that were the same in all that time.

But the Canon City swim pool is a great pool for a small town like we are.

The pool has a small picnic area that is perfect for birthday parties, picnics, and enjoying a little bit of shade during the hot, summer days. This picnic area sits right next to the kiddie pool so you can enjoy some treats while watching the kids play.

The deep end of the pool has two diving boards that have pretty good bounce and allow for some great flips and cannon ball contests. Behind the pool on the eastern side, is a large grassy area that is great for party games and laying in the sun enjoying the summer day.

And of course, there's the super slide! How awesome is that?

The Canon City swimming pool is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Lap swim is open seven days a week from 12:00 to 1:00 pm. Open swim is from 1:00 to 5:00 pm every day and from 7:00 to 9:00 pm Monday through Wednesday.

Monday Moving Moment: What to do when Traveling and Someone Gets Sick

When we came out to visit Colorado on our house hunting trip, we were so excited. It was the first time that Dear Hubby and I had been away from the kids alone in years. We were here to visit for a week and had a pretty relaxed schedule in that we could eat wherever we wanted and go wherever we wanted. It was going to be a bit of the honeymoon that we never had.

But then I got sick. By the end of the week, I was too sick to want to eat anything and all I wanted to do was sleep all day. It really put a damper on our trip.

Since we were so far away from home and I didn't really want to leave the hotel room, there wasn't any way to go visit the doctor and get some help to feel better.

If only I had read Colorado Springs Tours and Review's blog back then. If I had known about what to do when traveling and someone gets sick, the trip might have been a little more fun for us.

Small Town Farmers Market

One of the great things about living in a small town is the sense of community. One of the places that I feel that the best is at our small town Farmer's Market.

Canon City has their farmers market on Tuesday mornings from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm in Veteran's Park. Florence has their farmers market on Thursday mornings at the same time at Pioneer Park.

Both markets have all sorts of wonderful booths to look at, to taste, and to enjoy.

When we came to visit Colorado on our house hunting trip, we stopped by the Florence market as an introduction to the town. There were all types of yummy treats, crafts, and even a real life wolf. It was one of the most amazing and beautiful things I had ever seen. I've talked about how cool the wildlife is here in town, but to see the wolf up close and personal (and safely) was pretty amazing.

If you're more into tame animals, the Canon City market has pony rides that you can take for only $3.00. That would be a great way to introduce your children to the local horse stables in town and all they have to offer.

If animals aren't your thing, there are lots of crafts to purchase and enjoy. On my walk through the market this morning, I saw necklaces, earrings, yarn, ceramics, dog tags, and more. I love to support local businesses, so purchasing a beautiful souvenir of your Colorado trip or introduction to your new home is a great way to meet your new neighbors.

And of course, if you're looking for fresh, home grown fruits and vegetables, the farmers market is a great place to purchase the essentials.

While Florence is a big prison town, it's a small town in heart and feel. If you're looking for more to see and do without going too far, it's only a short drive north to Colorado Springs. My good friend Camille from Colorado Springs Tours and Reviews is guest posting for me today on three things you don't want to miss in Colorado Springs.

3 Things You Don’t Want to Miss in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs is full of history, natural beauty, and fun events. There is so much that sometimes it’s hard to know where to even start: At the Olympic Training Center or what about Manitou Springs? If you only go to Colorado Springs once, there are 3 things that you definitely don’t want to miss. It doesn’t matter if you are going with your entire extended family or just by yourself, these sites are perfect for everyone.

Pikes Peak- It’s hard to miss but take the chance to actually go to the top. The views are amazing and the experience a must. If you drive to the top be sure to make time to stop along the way. There are some amazing, fun spots on the way to the top. Don’t like the driving on the winding roads? Take the Cog Railway instead. It’s a fun way to enjoy the scenery without having to worry about all the turns. If you are up for a real adventure, try one of the bike tours. There is even one where you can horseback ride first, take a bus the rest of the way then ride your bike all the way down!
Garden of the Gods- Rock climbing, hiking, bird watching, mountain biking, picnicking- Garden of the Gods has it all. Start at the Visitor Center to check out Colorado’s own dinosaur and learn more about the area. If you need a wheelchair or stroller friendly walk in the Garden, head towards the first parking lot. It’s the only paved route in the Garden. Don’t have time to walk around? You can drive around the whole Garden and stop at the pull outs to take some amazing pictures. One of my favorite spots to stop is Balanced Rock. It’s the perfect spot for the classic picture. Have some extra time? At the entrance to the Garden of the Gods is Rock Ledge Ranch, a working historic ranch. Check out their event calendar to go on a day when they have all kinds of fun activities.
Cheyenne Mountain Zoo- The only mountain side zoo in America, its one not to miss. Not only will you love the views but you’ll be amazed at the giraffe herd. You can even feed them (watch out for the long tongues!) or feed the elephants. Watch the Grizzly Bears swim through the water, and see the Hippo demonstration. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo knows how to do it right. It’s full of fun attractions for the little ones as well as adults. Plan to stay the whole day! At the end of your trip but sure to drive to up to the Will Roger’s Shrine included in your admission.

While there is plenty more to see and experience in the Springs, start with one of these and you won’t be disappointed.

One of the greatest challenges of moving or living in a hotel is keeping the kids busy and out of trouble. Finding small games and activities for the kids to do is a lifesaver.

Royal Gorge Rafting with American Adventure Expeditions

I went to college to become an accountant. After taking my first year of classes, I discovered I was not cut out for all the theory and stress that career entailed. I started looking around at other options and stumbled upon the Recreation Management degree. I was in LOVE!

One of my classes was an introduction into some of the ways you could use your Recreation Management degree. We got to try a lot of different activities as part of the class. I went Paint Balling, Hot Air Ballooning, and White Water Rafting.

Our White Water Rafting trip was a little bit dissapointing. When we went, the river was not very full so there weren't really any rapids and it was more a leisurely trip down the river (until my brother threw me into the water and lost my prescription sunglasses. But I'm not still sore about that or anything....)

When we moved to Canon City, we found the Arkansas River was a big part of the local life and economy. As you drove through town or rode on the Royal Gorge train, you could see rafters having a ball on the river. It's something my kids are anxious to try, but I admit, I thought the price has kept us from trying it. I didn't realize it was affordable after all.

Florence 4th of July Town Parade

I don't understand the lack of parades in our little town. What town doesn't like to get together and celebrate every holiday by throwing together crazy, fun floats to celebrate every group and organization that ever existed in town? I don't get it.

So I was really dissapointed to hear that Canon City only has two parades all year long, and neither one celebrates Independence Day. But Florence came through with their wonderful and unique 4th of July parade.

Not only can you go and share your patriotic spirit with this wonderful, little town, but the kids will get a little extra something special with Florence's unique parade. After touring half of the town, the parade participants pull out their water guns and have a fun water soaking as the parade continues.

I love how unique and fun this idea is. It cools off the kids and keeps them entertained with the parade in a whole new way. So if you're looking for something great to do on the Fourth of July, go visit downtown Florence for a unique and fun Patriotic Parade.

Monday Moving Moment: Clothing Storage Containers

When we started actually looking at the logistics of moving with the Bureau and living in a hotel for an unknown amount of time, the thought of living out of a suitcase and having to keep up with six people's clothes and stuff gave me a headache.

I just couldn't imagine suitcases all over a small hotel space. I guess you could say I'm just not a suitcase kind of gal.

When I was wandering through Walmart one day, I came across a solution that saved my sanity.

I purchased six Sterilite 17571706 66-Quart ClearView Latch Boxes and gave one to each of our family to pack the clothes they wanted to keep with them for the move. We wrote their names on the tops of the containers and the sides so it was easy for everyone to know who's was who's.

My daughter was the only one who complained that it was too small, and wouldn't work for her. But it ended up being wonderful in that it kept her clothes pile down to a minimum so we didn't have clothes everywhere during our hotel stay. Since the kids really wore the same few clothes most of the time anyway, it worked out nicely.

Another great benefit of these boxes is that they stack nicely. After everyone got dressed for the day, I could stack all the boxes in a corner of the hotel room and they were out of the way. They also stacked wonderfully in the back of the car.

We loved the idea so much and it worked so nicely, that we now use our boxes every time we go on vacation.

Entertainment in the Park

One of the things that I love most about our small town is the abundance of community events involving music and entertainment. We have a whole Music and Blossom festival. We have downtown street festivals. First Friday events have lots of music on every corner.

During the warm summer months, we also have Entertainment in the Park.

Every Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm, Canon City hosts a great musical concert at Veteran's Park. Florence also does their own Entertainment in the park at Pioneer Park on Tuesdays too.

So grab your blanket or lawn chair, and some great friends to enjoy the summer evening with. Musical guests change from week to week so you can listen to all types of great music.

Musical entertainment is free, but on sight food vendors are available if you're looking for a little treat to relax and enjoy with.

What's Your Integrity Worth?

I am not one to get be loudly political. I have strong beliefs on what I believe is right and wrong and what is wrong with this country, but I usually don't voice my opinions (except to my family, who can't seem to shut me up sometimes.)

But when it comes to Colorado's new marijuana laws, I can see what it's doing to our state and I'm worried about our wonderful little area. My friend posted this letter in the local paper and I just had to share it here.

Ashley Smith: Is your integrity worth a parade down Main Street in the nude?

The truth about Recreational Marijuana

Ashley R. Smith is a Cañon City resident, mother of six, regional mentor and leadership guide for teens and women's self-defense student.

As a stay-at-home mother of six active children, it's surprising how often my children help keep my values in check. I'm compelled to stay "in line" as they question why I make the choices I do, and it's usually through the innocent comments of the youngest that I see where my integrity really lies.

It reminds me of the "The Emperor's New Clothes" when the openly honest boy states the obvious truth that their leader, the emperor, was fooled into strutting down Main Street in the nude. He didn't have to be a genius to figure that out. The same can be said for the common sense logic our principled youth have about the detriments of recreational marijuana on our community. Even my five burping boys know that endorsing recreational drug use isn't all that proponents are making it out to be.

But if Fremont County officials cave in and allow permits for businesses to cultivate, manufacture and sell recreational marijuana, what kind of message are we sending to our youth and future generations?

Cañon City, Florence and Penrose are all grappling with this highly charged issue. Short-sighted proponents are calling to take advantage of "a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" to get rich from "sin" taxes. Others say it'll jump-start our economy with jobs. The arguments are about as volatile as the amateur THC labs that have been literally exploding in Colorado homes.

Luckily, we've had time to assess the consequences of legalizing marijuana and new studies continue to roll in. As examples, (A) DUID's in the state of Colorado have increased, (B) More children are being hospitalized for ingesting marijuana at home, (C) Burglaries in drug homes and businesses are climbing, (D) THC levels, which are considerably more potent than joints smoked in the 1960s, are bringing out more violence and even death than expected, (E) Downtown Seattle businesses complain they've been harmed, not helped, by cannabis buyers and climbs in violence.

And all this doesn't even touch on the documented surges in physical harm to health and mind.

Just because a law was passed last year on a piece of paper allowing recreational marijuana doesn't magically make its sales and use healthy and risk-free. The medical and law enforcement studies remain the same. Nor is it right to justify promoting and endorsing recreational drug use in order to make a relatively small tax profit. The higher long-term expenses far outweigh the ill-perceived benefits.

This Monday, June 2, the Cañon City Council will consider putting the issue to vote on November's ballots, and many local residents believe we can easily defeat it. This isn't necessarily the case. In the 2012 election, only 51.24 percent of Fremont County citizens voted to oppose recreational marijuana and in light of the growing "but it's legal now" mentality, the polls are increasingly in favor.

With such an emotionally charged issue our elected officials should do their duty; to research, gather expert council, weigh the pros and cons and make an educated and rational decision for what's best. Numerous towns in Colorado have done just that and, as a result, have chosen to ban recreational marijuana sales and production. Our Fremont County Commissioners have already unanimously prohibited the operation of retail and production marijuana facilities in the unincorporated areas of the county.

Although my children help keep my choices of late night television-watching and other questionable activities in line, ultimately, they look to me and to their community to judge what is right or wrong. Is our integrity worth stripping off basic standards of healthy and drug-free living to parade around town like the shortsighted and nude emperor?

We can make all the choices we want, but we can't choose the consequences. Don't let shortsighted people fool you into taking your clothes off.

Okay, so you have your transfer orders. The movers are scheduled, your house hunting trip is planned, and now you are thinking about the long drive from your old home to your new city.

I know I was. The thought of two and a half days in the car with my kids was almost more than I could consider. I was praying it wouldn't be two and a half days of yelling, whining, and fighting.

Skyline Drive

Before we had even moved to the Florence area, I had heard of Skyline Drive.

Some friends of ours who had lived here years before recommended we try it when we came out on our house hunting trip. So of course, we did.

I think I could have kicked them both in the knee caps after that experience.

I ABSOLUTELY hate heights...and mountain driving...and one lane roads. If you combine all three of those fears, then you have Skyline Drive outside of Canon City in a nut shell.

I'm told the view was pretty nice, but I admit, I sat with my eyes shut and my head between my knees praying it would be over, so I couldn't tell you for sure.

I'm not sure I would recommend this drive if you're coming to the Canon City or Florence area. In fact, I've threatened my children that if I ever found they had been up there they would be grounded for life. I'm pretty sure they have since they all just roll their eyes at me. But for now, at least I can say I did it and lived through the experience.

Cup and Cone Ice Cream Parlor

Here in the land of warmth and Sunshine, ice cream is one of the necessities of life...or at least my boys seem to think so. They are always asking to go to Cup and Cone Ice Cream Parlor. It's become their treat of choice.

We do love to go to this old fashioned ice cream parlor with it's comfortable chairs, large group tables, and sweet smells. After all, is there anything better than the sweet smell of dessert while sitting in a nice reading nook with a large scoop of Blue Bell ice cream in your hand? Probably not.

Blue Bell ice cream is one of the best ice cream brands and a rare find in Colorado. We all love the variety of flavors and Cup and Cone does not disappoint. Dear Hubby loves Moo-lennium Crunch, while both my boys dream of Krazy Kookie Dough ice cream. I'm a little more traditional with the Chocolate Chip Ice Cream and a "daring" flavor on top. This time it was Black Cherry with large chunks of cherries mixed into the ice cream, other times it's been Pistachio Walnut or something equally sweet tasting.

If you are looking to add a little spice to your ice cream, Cup and Cone offers candy and treat toppings for a few cents more. Daredevil likes the Yogurt Chips, while Mini Me adds gummy bears to everything he can.

You can also take home a little bit of heaven with pre-packed scoops of your favorite flavors or even an ice cream cake. We purchased one of the ice cream cakes for Drama Queen's sixteenth birthday and she still raves about it to this day.

Cup and Cone has added a new type of ice cream with the fun Cool Beads ice cream dots. My boys were drooling over these yummy flavors the moment they saw them. They have flavors such as Rainbow Ice, Cookies and Cream, Banana Split, and more. The cold, little dots of sweetness would make a fun treat on the go as you walk around downtown.

If you're new in town, you should definitely go check out Cup and Cone. Keeping the kids busy with yummy treats will keep them out of trouble and their mouths full so they won't argue this summer.

Lions and Tigers and Bears--Oh my!

One of the most amazing things about living in Canon City is the wildlife.

On a daily basis you see rabbit, fox, deer, birds, turkey, lions, tigers, and bears. Okay, maybe not the lions and tigers, but we have seen a bear or two.

When we first came house hunting to Colorado, we spent an afternoon driving around the Florence, Penrose, and Canon City area trying to get a feel for the different neighborhoods. As we were driving through a shaded, tree lined, houses everywhere neighborhood, a huge buck walked out right in front of our car.

He wasn't concerned about us in any way. He just looked at the car as if to say, "I have the right of way" and meandered across the street. On the other side, he found a patch of grass and started to graze.

We must have sat watching him for a good 20 minutes while my husband cursed that he didn't have a camera or a gun. (The darn hunter in him coming out again.) We couldn't believe how the deer had no problems with walking through a crowded neighborhood filled with people and life.

Since moving here, we are still amazed on a daily basis to see the amazing wildlife all around us. As we sit out on our back deck, we have seen packs of deer grazing in our lawn. We have seen rabbits playing on our kids' toys. We have seen birds making a nest in our tumbleweeds. It's incredibly amazing.

So if you're moving to Canon City, or just coming to visit, be prepared for a deer around any corner and to be amazed at every site.

Royal Gorge Route Railroad

It seems that I have always lived near train tracks. So it's not surprising that one of my bucket list dreams has always been to ride a train. How great would it be to sit back and relax as it takes you to your destination through amazing towns, beautiful scenery, and great company?

So I was super excited to find that one of the biggest and most unique destinations of Canon City is the Royal Gorge Route Railroad and train. This grand Colorado train takes guests on an epic and culinary adventure along the tumbling waters of the legendary Arkansas River deep within the granite cliffs of the Royal Gorge on a 20-mile round-trip train adventure.

Recently our family came to visit and we decided to ride the train. It was a fun experience that the younger kids are still talking about with stars in their eyes.

The train runs from March through December every year. There are several classes of service and ways to enjoy the train. We bought seats in Coach service, but spent the entire time out in the open air car enjoying the scenery.

There was so much to see and enjoy that we were amazed. The train had wonderful guides walking through the cars telling about the history of the area, pointing out interesting sites, and answering any questions we had.

We got to see several clusters of big horn sheep as we cruised through their mountain home. The Arkansas River was beautiful and the kids loved looking for fish and other wildlife.

The train takes you through the Royal Gorge where you can look up and see the Royal Gorge Bridge. It is one of the only structures left standing after the fire destroyed most of the park in the summer of 2013. I know that with my fear of heights, this will be as close as I get to the bridge.

We had several kids ranging in age from 6 months to 17 years, and they all enjoyed the two hours aboard the train. One of the services offered by the train is family pictures as you arrive to board. Normally I wouldn't have purchased one of these, as they are pretty over priced, but with the large group we had and the amount of fun we experienced, we did purchase the picture and the memories.

Dear Hubby and I definitely would like to try the Murder Mystery Train where you can discover “who dunnit” during one of several western-themed murder mystery dinner performances throughout the summer. It will have to be something we budget for or use as a special occasion as the trips are a bit expensive.

Despite the expense, I would definitely recommend the Royal Gorge Route Railroad as a fun family experience you need to try before you leave Canon City and the Florence area.

Canon City High School Show Choirs

When we first came to visit Florence on our house hunting trip, we were worried about things to "do" in the area. One of the things that we were told over and over and over was to not miss out on the Canon City High School show choirs.

Now I love to go to plays, music shows, and the like, and remember many years of my parents taking me to everything the local colleges had to offer.

But I admit, one I saw the Canon City High School Show Choirs preform, I realized we were definitely finding a hidden gem in this area. They are magnificent.

Canon City High School has two choirs-the Tigers Ladies which is an all girl choir and Encore which is mixed. They both sing, they both dance, they both perform amazing shows.

Dear Hubby and I recently took a trip up to Colorado Springs to watch them perform in the state Show Choir contest. Maybe I'm a bit biased, but none of the other choirs even came close to matching their choreography, their voices, and their range of songs. It was no surprise that they one in the top three of all the state. (They don't rank the choirs only tell you the top three.)

Their director, Mr. Todd Albright does a wonderful job with the kids and "Mama" Watson plays the piano in accompaniment better than just about anyone I've ever heard.

The kids put on several shows throughout the school year and if you ever get the chance to see one, take my advice and make it a priority. You won't be disappointed!

Canon City Music and Blossom Festival

Every year on the first weekend in May our little town really comes alive. We have lots of music, carnival rides, a parade, and lots of home town spirit. Canon City becomes home to the Music and Blossom Festival.

During this one weekend, there is so much to do in town that it's hard to keep the calendar updated.

The carnival is running with lots of thrills and sweet treats. I can't wait to stop by there tonight and pick me up a funnel cake and a freshly squeezed lemonade. (I admit, I could happily skip the rest of the carnival activity, but don't let me miss the midway fare.)

It looks like there are a few new rides and attractions this year, as well as fun for the little ones and the thrill seekers. This will be the first year my littlest one will be more interested in the "big" rides than the slides and fun houses. We'll see how well I handle it watching from the ground.

Saturday morning the Blossom Festival parade runs through downtown Canon City. It starts on 3rd street and runs through 9th street. Anywhere you sit on the route will be filled with fun people watching, great floats, and unique offerings from the downtown merchants.

I would definitely take a stop by the Kitchen Pantry at 619 Main Street to find some handmade treats from local Canon City vendors. I love the Rise and Shine donuts that are sold there as well as the offerings of cake pops and other great snacks.

The Craft Fair at Veterans Park runs Friday and Saturday for most of the day. Being from a few larger towns and festivals throughout the years, I'm sad to say that this is usually the biggest let down for me. The possibilities are endless of finding wonderful crafts and unique gift ideas at craft fairs, but it seems that a lot of what you find here will be local companies sharing information or a few wares.

But don't miss it, because the occasional hidden gem will surprise you. One year, I found the yummiest candy suckers shared by a local company based out of Pueblo. Another year, there were some amazing wood workings. I will definitely be looking for the unusual and great as I enjoy the music floating through the craft fair.

At the local high schools, there will be plenty of great action for those who like to hear more music or athletic ability. At Florence high school, you can listen to the Jazz Band competition while Canon City High School is hosting the xxx competition as well as the high school track meet.

Plus, if you're into running, don't miss out on the half marathon or 5K run going on Saturday morning. I am not a runner, but have seen some great rewards being passed out at the end of the race for those who need a little motivation. (One year they gave out Chocolate covered caramel apples, while another year it was chocolate Oreo medallions!)

Royal Gorge Gourmet Popcorn Store

One of the great things about living in a small town is the fun, unique little "mom and pop" stores you can find. I love shopping at these little slices of creativity and sweetness that show the American dream is still alive.

As I was wandering the streets of Florence, I discovered a wonderful popcorn store with the most beautiful colors, sweet and flavorful tastes, and yummy smells.

Upon walking into the Royal Gorge Gourmet Popcorn store, you are greeted with an eye catching wall filled with the most delicious flavors of popcorn you could imagine. With over 65 flavors of popcorn on the menu, you are sure to find a flavor that you love. Plus, if you don't see it, you can request your favorite flavor to join the parade without a problem.

If you aren't sure that you really would like some of the flavors, it's easy to try a sample before you buy. I loved the Royal Black Cherry Flavor, Royal Creme de Menthe (okay, I admit that surprised me that I liked it so much), the Key Lime, and the Orange. I wasn't a fan of the Pizza flavor and I didn't even get close to trying the Red Hot Pepper or the Dill Pickle. But if you're braver than me, I'm sure it's as tasty as the other flavors.

While we were there, we definitely had to sample the yummy fudge. My son had some regular chocolate and kept raving about it all day. He even wanted to go back later that afternoon and buy some more. Since I am a huge fan of fudge, I just might agree with him and go try a pound or two.

Royal Gorge Gourmet Popcorn Store has added a touch of fun to their store by adding wall maps where visitors can pin their hometown. Hundreds of pins show the far off places this yummy popcorn has traveled to. Plus, by visiting the Royal Gorge Gourmet Popcorn website, towns all over the United States can have a popcorn party with the treats shipped right to their door.

If you're traveling to Florence or moving here as part of the JOB, stop in to the Royal Gorge Gourmet Popcorn store and try some of the wonderful treats this small, family owned popcorn store offers. It's definitely one of the hidden gems in the area.

El Caporal Family Mexican Restaurant

I'm originally from Texas and I love a good enchilada, so it's not really a surprise that most of my favorite places to eat are Mexican restaurants. That's usually one of the first places that I try to find to eat in a new town.

Canon City has a few Mexican restaurants and they are all local eateries owned and run by local people. El Caporal Family Mexican Restaurant has turned out to be our favorite of all.

One of my favorite items at El Caporal is their free Chips and Salsa. The bowl of chips is large and usually warm and tasty. I am a salt fiend, so we do add a "bit" of salt to the chips and then chow down until our food comes.

I have to admit, that I am pretty disappointed that the restaurant doesn't offer a queso dip. We've talked to the staff about it and they said they'd look into it when they started working on their new menus, but for now, I miss my cheese sauce.

I am pretty predictable when I go to a restaurant. I figure if I am going to pay the money to go out to eat, I'm going to get something that I know I will like.

For me, that is the Enchilada dinner. It comes with 2 enchiladas in your choice of beef, cheese, or chicken, a side of Mexican rice, and some refried beans. I don't know if it's just me, but I don't get why it doesn't have lettuce to it, but that's an extra cost that I don't ever spring for.

Dear Hubby on the other hand, loves to mix things up. He tries a new meal every time we go. This time he had the xxx and a double portion of refried beans. Since we love to enjoy the beans with our chips, it usually means an extra bowl of chips with our meal.

Since Dear Hubby is working the DUMB evening shift, we like to go to El Caporal for lunch on his days off. We have been able to order lunch and spend the afternoon enjoying each others company for less than $20.00.

If you like a good Mexican restaurant, than I definitely recommend El Caporal in Canon City, CO. They are family friendly, the wait time to get a seat is usually very quick, the food is priced reasonable, and the waitstaff is very friendly and the meals quick to the table.

Hello From Canon City, Colorado!

We are a DOJ family living in the mountains of Colorado.

While both Dear Hubby and I were military brats growing up, moving with the DOJ as an adult and parent was a lot harder than military moves as a kid. After moving to small town Canon City, we had a hard time trying to find places to eat and things to do.

After living here for two years, there are moments I think about our move and wish I had known then what I know now.

In an effort to help others who are moving with the DOJ, I wanted to share what I've learned and try to help you find the Joy all around us.

This blog will be a place to share the best places to eat in town. The fun things to do with your kids. And the events that you surely shouldn't miss out on.

My dream is to have other DOJ moms and wives, share their special places in hometowns around the country so when our little family gets the call to move again, we'll be a little more prepared this time.
