James Turrell Opens at the Guggenheim Museum in June

NEW YORK, NY James Turrell, the eminent American artist’s first solo exhibition in a New York museum since 1980. The exhibition features a major new site-specific work, Aten Reign (2013), which represents one of the most dramatic transformations of the museum ever conceived—reimagining the rotunda of Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic building as one of Turrell’s luminous and immersive Skyspaces. Opening on the summer solstice, the installation will fill the museum’s central void with shifting natural and artificial light and intense, modulating color, creating a dynamic perceptual experience that exposes the materiality of light. Including select early works in addition to the monumental new installation, James Turrell considers the dominant themes explored by the artist for nearly fifty years, focusing on his investigations of perception, light, color, and space and the critical role of site-specificity in his practice.

James Turrell is one of three concurrent, independently curated presentations of the artist’s work in summer 2013. Together, the exhibitions at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art celebrate Turrell's groundbreaking career and form a three-part retrospective across the country.

The New-York Historical Society will present AIDS in New York: The First Five Years, on view from June 7 through September 15, 2013, chronicling the early history of the AIDS epidemic in New York City—from the first rumors in 1981 of a “gay plague” through the ensuing period of intense activism, clinical research, and political struggle. With a wealth of materials drawn from New-York Historical’s archives as well as the archives of the New York Public Library, New York University, and the National Archive of LGBT History, the exhibition will use artifacts including clinicians’ notes, journal entries, diaries, letters, audio and video clips, posters, photographs, pamphlets, and newspapers to revisit the impact of the epidemic on personal lives and public culture in New York City and the nation. A companion exhibition, Children With AIDS: 1990-2000, also opening June 7^th, will feature twenty black-and-white photographs by Claire Yaffa from her collection The Changing Face of Children with AIDS.

Tales Transposed: A Celebration of Imagination

Curated by Eleanor Smythe, this whimsical exhibition features work by Lillian Trettin, Judy Mooney, and Nathan Durfee. Mounted as a part of the 2013 Piccolo Spoleto Festival, Tales Transposed explores stories and settings drawn from literature, history, and pure fantasy- bringing together paper collage inspired by the writings of Flannery O' Connor, small-scale interpretations of Gullah vernacular architecture rendered in clay, and a series of paintings centered around one dog in search of his identity and a sense of belonging.

Featuring this year's Piccolo Spoleto Spotlight Concerts Poster Artist, this exhibit is a compilation of recent paintings, drawings and collages combining bold bird silhouettes with abstract shapes and color fields. These works examine such human conditions as distraction, doubt, aspersion, comfort, desire and attachment. They invite individual reflections and collective dialogs, and show there is more to be gleaned from a bird feeder than just sunflower seeds.

The South Carolina Department of Mental Health presents this very unique exhibit featuring artwork by individuals living with mental illnesses. Unveiled in 2001, this program aims to showcase the talents of those receiving services and the role that art can play in the recovery process. "The Art of Recovery" seeks not only to empower clients, but also educate the public about, and dispel the stigma associated with mental illness.

Ethereal Edges: Lowcountry Coastlines In Batik

The first-ever Piccolo Spoleto Invitational Exhibition at The Citadel, featuring an installation of large-scale silk batiks by celebrated local artist Mary Edna Fraser. The meditative dye-resist process of batik allows her to translate the sinuous lines of familiar locales (including The Citadel itself) into lengthy swaths of richly colored silks that float overhead, suspended, from the cathedral ceiling of the venue. A companion series of didactic photographs, tools, and batik materials documents the process of how these works were created, from inspiration to completion.

After his law studies, he left Beirut to Paris and enrolled at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs, to study interior design. Despite his passion, orthodox and conservative family disapproves of his desire to be a painter and Michel chose to become an interior designer, a career that satisfies the faith his family and his artistic ambitions. For more than thirty-nine years the Greater St. Louis Art Association (www.gslaa.org) has been providing opportunities for the public to see and purchase original works of fine art and fine craft directly from the artists who create them.

Every year we produce two juried art shows (Spring and Labor Day Weekend). Artists in all media are encouraged to apply. These shows feature juried local, regional and national artists' original work. From the pool of artists applying, about 130 artists from all over the US and Canada are invited to exhibit. These artists are selected by a professional jury process in eleven distinct media categories.

Both shows are presented in the indoor, air-conditioned setting of the Greensfelder Recreation Complex at Queeny Park in west St. Louis County. Food and refreshments are available on site, parking for the public and artists is free. Live music playing during wine tasting and peak attendance. During Sunday afternoon, an interactive children's art education program encourages families with youngsters to meet and talk with artists and learn about their work.

Fountain’s undeniable passion for music and art has always been one of its trademarks, so what better way to celebrate their synergy than by partnering with En Masseand New York’s premiere music festival, Governors Ball!?

On Randalls Island from June 7th – 9th, Fountain will collaborate with Montreal based collectiveEn Masse to create an unforgettable live painting event. Two massive octagonal structures on the festival’s grounds will be decked out with En Masse’s signature black and white murals. Artists from around the city and the globe will work alongside the core members to publicly create one of Governors Ball’s greatest immersive art experiences; where street art and music become one.

Featuring such acts as Guns and Roses, Kanye West, Kings of Leon, Bloc Party, Nas and many others, Governors Ball has placed itself at the forefront of the hip-hop, rock and indie pop scene. Their dedication to the arts has been exemplified by hosting a myriad of major public art installations throughout the festival weekend.

FOX Audience Strategy with FOX Broadcasting and FOX Searchlight Presents: Casting in the New America

Event: Tuesday May 14, 2013

Top executives at FOX who are involved in film and television give an insider's perspective on casting shows to reflect the growing diversity of America's population. Their expertise in the areas of distribution, marketing and production will be shared in vibrant presentations and a discussion to follow. They will highlight opportunities and challenges presented by the multicultural shift that becomes more pronounced in every new U.S. Census report.

The conversation will focus on several viewpoints and perceptions related to a variety of different media platforms. This session takes place just after the FOX-TV upfront advertising presentation for the 2013/2014 TV season. The panelists are ready and willing to answer questions from the audience.

Panelists:

Keli Goff is a Political Correspondent for TheRoot.com. As a political analyst, Goff has appeared on more than 100 national and international news programs for the networks BET, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, NPR, and the BBC. Her work regularly appears on the homepage of the Huffington Post and has also appeared in the publications Cosmopolitan, Time, Essence and The Daily Beast. Goff's work has been the subject of coverage in Vanity Fair, The New York Times, USA Today and many other outlets. She is cited as an expert source in the book The Huffington Post Complete Guide to Blogging and profiled in the book No Excuses: 9 Ways Women Can Change How We Think About Power.

Cristina Mancini is Senior Vice President, Worldwide Marketing for Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution. Responsible for publicity, creative services, corporate communications and online web and social media activity, Mancini’s teams create and manage marketing and publicity support for all television distribution initiatives. She has overseen campaigns for Glee, Modern Family, Simpsons, 24, Touch as well as The Americans produced by FX Productions.

Zola B. Mashariki is currently a Senior Vice President of Production at Fox Searchlight Pictures in Los Angeles. She has worked on a number of feature films, including The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Another Earth, Never Let Me Go, Just Wright, Our Family Wedding, The Savages, The Namesake, The Clearing, In America and Antwone Fisher. In 2010, she joined the faculty of the University of Southern California in the Cinematic Arts Department where she teaches part-time to graduate film/MFA students.

Shana C. Waterman serves as Senior Vice President, Event Series & Multi-Platform Programming, a newly-created department at FBC set out to manage the network’s limited-run and digital programming initiatives. She commissions and develops long-form event series for Fox under the network’s joint initiative with FX and oversees the network’s multi-platform programming, including Animation Domination High-Def (ADHD), The Short-Com Comedy Hour (working title), WIGS and other digital-to-broadcast efforts. Before taking on her new role, Waterman was Senior Vice President of Current Programming where she oversaw several prime-time, scripted television series including House, Glee, Fringe, Raising Hope, The Mindy Project, American Dad and Family Guy. While at Fox, Waterman produced Fox’s inaugural Seizing Opportunities Forum, spurring dialogue among creative partners about shifting audience demographics. She also oversees the Fox Innovators Group, an internal program designed to foster entrepreneurial thinking and innovation among employees. For her efforts, Waterman was given a 2012 FOX Excellence in Innovation award. She joined the company as Director, Current Programming in 2006. Currently she serves on the Board of the New York Foundation for the Arts.

Seth Yanklewitz oversees casting for FOX’s New Girl, Raising Hope and The Following. After several years in the casting business, Yanklewitz and fellow casting director Juel Bestrop formed Juel Bestrop and Seth Yanklewitz Casting, and they cast some of the most successful feature comedies in recent history, including The Hangover, Blades of Glory, Four Christmases, Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakel and Project X. They also case the HBO comedy series Eastbound & Down. In early 2011, Yanklewitz and Bestrop began casting on the FOX comedy pilot New Girl, for which they recently received an Emmy Award nomination in the category of Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series.

The Hole is proud to announce the second solo exhibition by Holton Rower at the gallery presenting two bodies of work side by side. Rower's "Pour paintings" debuted here last May with a full-gallery survey of the diverse results achieved by the artist through his innovative and deceptively simple process of pouring hand-made acrylic paints over wood. In conjunction with ten new pours that elaborate upon this approach, Rower will introduce a new body of work titled "Focus paintings" that, perhaps, are equally simple in construction and complex in effect. The fact is, we do not know how the artist achieved these seemingly out of focus paintings, whether they were poured over a curved support, doused with urethane, or dried on a vibrating surface; the method of their contruction will remain an artist's secret so the viewer can focus on the visual effect they produce and their quizzical relationship to the history of abstract painting. Like the pours, that are no more like Morris Louis than like Lynda Benglis, the focus paintings are superficially somewhere in between Richter and Hirst, or perhaps even further back like a Kandinsky quivering field of pure color or Emile Nolde poppy field. The relationship between the two bodies of work is challenging as well: we here have decided that they both come from an artist who is a true "chemist of paint" and a sculptor of paint more than a traditional abstract painter.

The opening of Alice Aycock's Drawings, at the Parrish Museums last night was well attended. Alice's exhibition was interspersed with sculptural maquettes depicted with in the drawings. An understanding of Sacred Geometry was explored; possible astrological or mystical influences could be interpreted from this display. Incorporated into the images, as an understanding of Art, Design & Architecture stated as artistic metaphors seen in engineering, reflections into Di Vinci, M.C. Esher, and from my viewpoint the early Russian Avant Garde art. Additional vast cultural influences may be seen in the works reflective of Thangka paintings, Persian Mosaics, possible engineered space and time warps. Aycock's unusual mechanical perspective was in part noted as foray into computer imagery. The artists expression is labeled as...Aycock is an artist who thinks on paper,” writes Terrie Sultan ... “Her spectacular drawings are equal parts engineering plan and science-fiction imagining. As in all of her work, fantastic narrative writings weave in and out of her images, inspiring her production of sculptural objects, drawings, and installations.”... The exhibition's slant or emphasis seems to reflect Urbana's academic environment, as a great Social Science university possibly not fully capturing the intend of the works as displayed. Language as Metaphor, seen to be developed with in a statistical analytic lens possibly seen as the computer or engineering may have influenced this curators understanding, spin, and or story retelling with in the exhibition as dialogue. I felt the display of Alice Aycock's work, Some Stories Are Worth Repeating, shown in an almost static atmosphere not in keeping for what is an outstanding etherial, out of the box, collection of works. James Durfee, Jr. and Horatio Nelson Durfee were two of six children born to James Durfee (1803-1889) a New Bedford, Massachusetts blacksmith, and his first wife Mary Allen (1798-1842). On March 23, 1843, James Durfee, Sr. married Julia Vinal (1822-1855) and the couple had two daughters, Mary Walker Durfee, born January 31, 1847, and Ellen Wade Durfee, born April 16, 1849.

About the Project

Seven Women Seven Sins brought together some of the world?s most renown

women directors: Helke Sander (GLUTTONY), Bette Gordon (GREED), Maxi

Cohen (ANGER), Chantal Akerman (SLOTH), Valie Export (LUST), Laurence

Gavron (ENVY), and Ulrike Ottinger (PRIDE). Each filmmaker chose a sin

to interpret as they wished. The final film reflected this diversity,

including traditional narrative fiction, experimental video, a musical,

and a radical documentary.

Funding Goal

$43,000 is needed to preserve this important work. However, we have

already raised $25,000 in cash and in-kind services. Our goal is to

raise $17,000 through this campaign.
