Dianne Batista, Head of Jewels, New York, Senior Vice President, and Cristina Rodrigo, Specialist and Head of Sale, jointly said, “It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm from our collecting community around the globe as we concluded our jewels auctions for the spring season at Phillips. Today’s sale saw 82% of sold lots achieve prices within or above estimate and the auction was led by an extraordinary emerald and diamond necklace, which sold for $541,800. Demand continued for signed jewels, as well, with examples by makers such as Harry Winston, Cartier, and JAR, among others, selling 100% by lot and doubling their overall pre-sale estimate. Phillips has continuously demonstrated a proven ability to achieve strong results for single-owner collections, and today’s results underscore that commitment by our international team. The tremendous momentum achieved over the course of the spring for the collection of Tina Hills continued into the auction today with forty lots realizing impressive results, perhaps most notably the De Vroomen Tourmaline, Diamond and Enamel Pendant Brooch, 1999, which skyrocketed past its estimate of $3,000–5,000 to lead the group at $100,620. We are also delighted with the success of the Collection of Irma Nicolas, which achieved a white-glove, 100%-sold result. Both of these highly esteemed collections doubled their pre-sale estimates, further reinforcing the strength of the market and the continued confidence in jewels from private collections.”

David Hockney Leads the Sale on 26 June in London

LONDON – 10 JUNE 2026 – Phillips is proud to present highlights of the Modern & Contemporary Art Evening & Afternoon Sale, taking place on 26 June in London. Led by David Hockney’s The Only One with Waves, a significant work from a pivotal moment in the artist’s career, the sale brings together an important selection of British art including works by Bridget Riley, Frank Auerbach and Tracey Emin. Further highlights include a prominent group of South Asian artists, in response to growing international recognition and market demand, alongside contemporary voices such as Andrew Cranston, Anna Weyant, Julie Mehretu and Jadé Fadojutimi. The preview exhibition will open at Phillips’ Berkeley Square from 19 June until the auction on 26 June at 2pm BST.

British Art Highlights

Leading the sale is David Hockney’s The Only One with Waves, created during a pivotal period in his career. Painted in 1991, shortly after acquiring his home in Malibu, the work revisits Hockney’s celebrated motif of water while anticipating the groundbreaking Very New Paintings series begun the following year. Reflecting the inspiration he drew from the Southern Californian coast, the flattened perspective and schematic approach to form reveals Hockney’s innovative approach to landscape painting.

Bridget Riley’s Measure for Measure 40 is

a striking example of the artist’s enduring

exploration of perception, rhythm and

colour. Created in the same year as her

retrospective at the Scottish National

Gallery and Hayward Gallery, the work is

closely related to Messengers, Riley’s

celebrated wall installation at the National

Gallery, London.

The sale includes other major works by contemporary artists such as El Anatsui’s Delta (2014), which exemplifies his transformation of discarded materials into monumental sculptural forms. With its cascading surface the sculpture of aluminium bottle caps draws on West African visual traditions and reflects Anatsui’s exploration of material, history and collective memory. In contrast, Donald Judd’s Untitled (1991) embodies the precision and conceptual clarity that defined his contribution to Minimalism. Marlene Dumas’ Blue Cross (1993–95) is also featured from the Collection of Marcel Brient, Paris, which demonstrates the artist’s distinctive ability to distil figuration into evocative fields of colour and emotion.

Parade at Night, both of which exemplify the artists’ pioneering fusion of modernist

aesthetics with Indian cultural traditions. After achieving a world auction record for

Lancelot Ribeiro in March 2026, when Landscape at Noon sold for £516,000, Phillips

will offer another example of the artist’s celebrated paintings, Landscape.

Thank you to everyone who has purchased artworks online, visited the gallery, shared the exhibition with friends, and joined us for an incredible First Friday. 6x6 is off to a fantastic start, and it is reminding us just how unifying art can be.

More than 3,000 artists from around the world created and donated artwork to support RoCo. Receiving this generosity and seeing so many people connect through our venue and these small artworks is always touching.

We also owe so much to our incredible team of volunteers, who help make 6x6 possible; our exhibition sponsors and underwriters, who supported this year's show; and Dan O’Donnell for the smart pair of postcard designs.

First Friday Recap

Last week we launched the NEW First Friday maps at venues across Rochester! These are great for orienting new folks to Rochester's Citywide Gallery Night. So grab one, hand it to someone who doesn't yet know about First Friday, and show them what they've been missing!

As always, June's line up was a blast, next First Friday is July 3 - First Friday carries on even though it's near a holiday. Venues, if you'll be open, send your event information to us today.

Book Launch June 17

Join Catherine Valleroy at RoCo from 6-8pm for an evening of poetry and refreshments marking the completion of her final book of poetry, Seeing, from her series Catherine’s Poetic Life. The first two books in the collection are Better Look and Better Looking, and now the third book Seeing is being released. At 6:30, Catherine will do a short reading from Seeing followed by a book signing. All three books will be available for purchase. Admission is free for this event.

In August we will be hosting Fire & Form organized by Rochester’s Working With Wax group. This exhibition, juried by Regina B. Quinn, celebrates the versatility, texture, and transformative nature of wax-based practices and its unique and pronounced history in NYS. We're excited to help celebrate Rochester's outsized role in the recent re-invigoration of this medium!

The submission process is now open to recent 2D and 3D work created with wax, including encaustic, cold wax, and mixed media where wax is a key element.

Johanna Ulfsak, born in 1987 in Estonia, is a textile artist and designer based in Tallinn. She holds a Master's degree in Textile Design from Kolding School of Design, Denmark, and furthered her studies at Kawashima Textile School in Japan, where she learned Kasuri weaving and ancient plant dyeing techniques. Ulfsak has gained experience in various fashion and textile companies across Switzerland, Germany, and Estonia. Her work emphasizes slow, traditional methods like hand-weaving and wood carving, blending these with contemporary art concepts to produce unique items and installations that challenge disciplinary boundaries.

Daria Koltsova, a prominent contemporary Ukrainian artist born in 1987 in Kharkiv, creates installations, performances, and videos that intertwine political and personal narratives. After seeking refuge from the war in Berlin and Oxford, she frequently returns to Odessa to work. Her art responds to the impacts of conflict, focusing on themes like memory, displacement, and resilience. Since the 2014 annexation of Crimea, Koltsova has explored the delicate balance of protection and fragility, expressing hope amid destruction through her innovative visual language.

Katja Novitskova’s work is featured in Labouring Bodies, a major group exhibition exploring the intersections of the body, labour, technology, and care from a feminist perspective. Spanning the early twentieth century to the present, the exhibition examines how technological systems shape human bodies and reproductive labour, while also highlighting forms of resistance and alternative futures.

Chelsea Music Festival announces Family Event: Every Storybook Counts at St. Paul’s German Church, 315 W. 22nd St, NYC, set for Saturday, June 27, 2026 from 10:30am–12pm. Tickets are free and can be reserved here.

Grab your friends, kids, and neighbors and join us at this free, family-friendly gathering. Join us for activities that highlight American composers, interactive storytelling with music, and bookmaking for your stories! Adults must be accompanied by a child. This event will feature visual artist Paul Collins’ exhibition of selected books from his Unbannable Library project. RSVPs are required.

Paul Collins is an artist and teacher in Nashville, TN. Paul has an MFA from Yale University and has been a resident at Skowhegan, the MacDowell Colony, Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Hambidge Center, and the Vermont Studio Center. Paul teaches at Austin Peay State University.

Paul is an advocacy publisher developing public art projects that celebrate the diverse stories that make my community specific, real, and magnificent.

Current ongoing projects include @unbannablelibrary and @unzinenashville. And, of course, drawing: I'm always going somewhere and drawing to try to learn & figure things out. The Unbannable Library is a community effort to fight censorship and intimidation in our libraries. Teams of artists, writers, teachers, librarians, and students are joining forces to create larger-than-life interactive book sculptures based on banned books and original written works of singular voice and experience. Designed for display and use at libraries everywhere, this rich collection of interactive book sculptures is literally TOO BIG to ban.

The result of collaborations between local artists, writers, teachers, students, and community members, these unique larger-than-life books employ text and image to draw attention to the voices and stories subject to censorship. In 2024 and 2025, this exhibition spanned a dozen sites across Middle Tennessee, New York, and Kentucky to allow wide access for viewers to experience and interact with the voices of those affected by book bans. /SAC Bucharest in collaboration with Galeria Catinca Tabacaru, is pleased to present Free Fall into a Standing Position, a new solo exhibition by Ovidiu Toader, curated by Anne-Marie Lolea.

Bringing together sculpture, drawing, and spatial intervention, the exhibition reflects the artist’s ongoing interest in movement, transformation, and states of transition. Conceived around a newly commissioned large-scale sculptural work, the project examines moments of instability and balance, inviting viewers to consider how bodies, objects, and histories are shaped through processes of change.

Working across sculpture, drawing, analogue photography, and natural materials, Toader develops immersive environments that blur the boundaries between poetic speculation and material inquiry. His works have been included in exhibitions at the Maramotti Collection in Reggio Emilia, Art Encounters Foundation and the French Institute in Timisoara, International Cultural Center Krakow as part of the Ovidiu Sandor Collection, and the Cultural Institute in Berlin. The artist is represented by Galeria Catinca Tabacaru.

This summer, FOR-SITE presents Andy Goldsworthy: Red Flags, a site-specific exhibition by the internationally acclaimed artist, on view at Fort Mason’s Gateway Pavilion in partnership with Fort Mason Art. Marking the West Coast debut of Goldsworthy’s monumental installation Red Flags (2020), the exhibition features fifty 5 x 8-foot flags, each stained red with earth collected from one of the fifty US states.

Originally hung in New York’s Rockefeller Center, the flags’ presentation at Fort Mason coincides with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, reflecting on geographic and political boundaries, and on the ties between people, land, and nation. Rather than displaying emblems that differentiate each state, Goldsworthy’s flags ask us to consider what unifies them—and us.

Andy Goldsworthy: For Olle brings together a suite of related photographic works and a new clay sculpture made with kaolin clay. Dedicated to the artist's longtime friend and collaborator, Olle Lundberg, the show offers an intimate reflection on materiality and memory, loss and renewal.

At the heart of the exhibition are three photographic diptychs from Goldsworthy’s series Fallen Elm (2009–present), documenting ephemeral works made in relation to a single, fallen elm tree near the artist’s home in Scotland.

Robert Wyland responds to his Mural of Whale painted over in Dallas for the World cup with a lawsuit!!!!: see below

I met Robert Wyland while he was painting a mural in Southern California. I think we were in Laguna. Wyland is Noted for his "100 Whale Paintings" painted as murals. We were both fairly young. Wyland's passion for the environment, and whales matched my own. For 30 or so years we would run into each other at art Fairs and events. IT was great to see Wyland grew in stature. In reading that his mural had been painted over for a world cup event I was dumbstruck. This was just wrong in my opinion. This week I was delighted to see Robert Wyland is suing the removal of his mural. See the below google search results:

Painted in 1999, Whaling Wall #82 in downtown Dallas holds a unique history. Its initial unveiling was accompanied by a huge Texan celebration remembered fondly by Dallasites. Famously, Hersel Walker joined to dedicate this mural, marking its completion and significance to the city. 💙

Regarding this piece, @wyland said, "There aren’t whales in Dallas, but my whole concept with the project was to connect even landlocked cities to the ocean. We’re all connected to the sea, so if people see the beauty in nature, they’ll work to protect it and preserve it." 💬

We aren't sure exactly when it happened, but sadly, advertisers covered the massive whales with a large-scale ad. Whaling Wall #82 remained hidden until April 2020, when the pandemic shrunk budgets for these huge outdoor ads. Much to the delight of Dallas residents, the mural re-emerged from behind the advertisement and cemented its place as one of the city's hidden gems. 💎

You can find this mural at the Texas Utilities Building at 505 Akard Street in downtown Dallas. 🏙

Kate Tova
b. 1995, Russia; lives and works in Monterey & Los Angeles, CA, US

Kate Tova is a Russian-Ukrainian artist born in Russia, currently living and working in California, USA. Tova is a multidisciplinary visual artist whose practice spans mixed media painting, sculpture, and site-responsive work. Rooted in a deep engagement with the natural world, her work explores psychological states, healing, and human connection through organic materials, vibrant color, and tactile process. Anastasia Tumanova is a Russian-American ceramic artist based in Berkeley, California. Inspired by California flora and traditional Russian folk art, she creates sculptural ceramic works and installations that translate natural textures, patterns, and growth forms into intricate abstract compositions. Tumanova has exhibited at Hashimoto Contemporary, Local Language Art Gallery, and Heron Arts, among others. Past clients include San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Google, and Walt Disney World. She received her B.A. from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2009.

Jones’ practice is anchored by an extraordinary sense of empathy, impelling him to document the human agency and resolve of people to thrive while enduring profound socio-political transitions—a theme most notably reflected in his extensive work chronicling daily life in Cuba.

His work has been described by one art writer as “humanist realism” and the term seems especially apt since Jones uniquely captures each individual presented in his paintings with a profound reverence for their personhood that transcends pretense, geographical boundaries, or polemics. Jones’ paintings reject the romanticized tropes often imposed upon complex regions; instead, his work reveals profound truth through the expressiveness of his subjects and the simple reality of their circumstances.

This led to an extraordinary overall sell-through rate of 90%, with 43% of works selling above the high estimate. At once scholarly and deeply personal, Ambassador Loeb’s collection has resonated across markets, reaffirming Phillips’ ability to strategically place rare, category-defining works with the world’s most discerning collectors and institutions.

At a moment when Iran is again before the world in crisis, it seems fitting to look beyond the headlines to the older and deeper inheritance of Persia: a civilization of poetry, imagination, and epic grandeur.

The next Thornwillow Dispatch presents Sohrab and Rustum, Matthew Arnold’s elegant 1853 retelling of one of the most powerful episodes from Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, or Book of Kings. Composed more than a thousand years ago, the Shahnameh remains one of the great epics of world literature — a treasury of kings and warriors, loyalty and betrayal, fate and recognition.

Arnold’s poem tells the story of Sohrab, a young warrior who enters battle seeking the father he has never known: Rustum, the greatest champion of Persia. On the banks of the Oxus, between two waiting armies, father and son meet in single combat. Neither recognizes the other until it is too late.

The result is a tragedy of war, blindness, pride, and inheritance — and ultimately a profound antiwar poem. Its sorrow lies not only in the bloodshed of the battlefield, but in the awful recognition that so much violence proceeds from ignorance, distance, and the failure to see one another clearly. It reminds us that the questions before us today — of war and peace, loyalty and blood, nations and memory — are not new.

This month’s Dispatch presents Arnold’s complete poem in a finely printed letterpress edition, hand-bound in our workshop in Newburgh, New York.

About Ferdowsi and the Shahnameh

Composed more than a thousand years ago by the Persian poet Ferdowsi, the Shahnameh, or Book of Kings, is one of the great epics of world literature. Written in more than 50,000 couplets, it preserves the mythic and historical memory of ancient Persia: its kings and heroes, battles and betrayals, triumphs and griefs. At its heart are questions that remain urgent across centuries — the duties of rulers, the burdens of honor, the bonds between fathers and sons, and the tragic consequences of pride, blindness, and war. The story of Sohrab and Rustum is its most powerful episode, and one of the defining myths of Persian civilization.

About Matthew Arnold and His Retelling

Matthew Arnold (1822–1888), one of the leading poets and critics of Victorian England, encountered the story of Sohrab and Rustum through the 19th-century revival of interest in Persian literature and epic tradition. His 1853 poem, Sohrab and Rustum, transforms the ancient Persian tragedy into stately English blank verse, giving the epic narrative a grave, classical dignity while preserving its emotional force. Not a literal translation, Arnold’s retelling is a profound work of art in its own right — one that carries the tragedy of Ferdowsi’s world across centuries and allows it to speak with unforgettable pathos, grandeur, and moral force to readers today.

For our June meeting, we're honored to welcome distinguished astrologer Priscilla Costello and renowned actor/astrologer Colin McPhillamy for a special program. Titled "Shakespeare and Astrology: How the Classical Worldview Unlocks his Plays," this talk describes how Shakespeare's plays reflect a comprehensive philosophical model in which astrology played an integral and natural role in making sense of human behavior and the world.

To add a special dimension to this talk, Colin will be reciting speeches from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" which illustrate the points being discussed. This will be the first dramatic performance ever presented at A.S.P.!

Priscilla Costello and Colin McPhillamy, "Shakespeare and Astrology: How the Classical Worldview Unlocks his Plays"

Did the Bard really draw on astrological symbolism to create his magnificent literary works? (spoiler alert: he did) And was he really inspired by the cosmological model of an interconnected, meaningful universe with synchronicities between humanity, nature and the cosmos? (spoiler alert: he certainly did!)

Starting with speculations about how astrology “works”, we will be focusing on the spiritual philosophy that originated with Pythagoras and Plato and was added to for over 2,000 years by multiple streams of Western thought: not only Platonism but also Neo-Platonism, Kabbalism, Hermeticism, and Christianity. By Shakespeare’s time, it is a fully developed cosmology positing connections between all the levels of creation through sympathetic resonance.

The stars and planets, named after the deities of Greek and Roman mythology, are integral parts of this model and function as carriers of psychological, philosophical, and spiritual meaning. Embedded within this framework is a formulation of a psychological model based on the four elements, which Shakespeare draws on consistently.

Referring specifically to “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, Priscilla and Colin will deconstruct its principal symbolism, and Colin will lend his sonorous tones in reciting speeches from the play.

We hope that from this deconstruction of the play you will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Bard’s works. If you have had difficulty “cracking the code” of Shakespeare’s opus, prepare to hear it in an entirely new way…we will “lend you ears” to experience it as the Elizabethans did!

About the speakers:

PRISCILLA COSTELLO, M.A., Dipl. CAAE (Canadian Association for Astrological Education) is a counselling astrologer, educator, speaker, and writer with a professional practice spanning over 40 years. With a B. A. from Wellesley College and a double prize-winning M. A. (on religious philosophy and Jungian psychology), she has spoken widely throughout the U.S, Canada, and England, and at numerous conferences sponsored by NCGR, AFA, SOTA, and UAC. Founder and Director of The New Alexandria, a centre for religious, spiritual, and esoteric studies, she has written numerous articles for various publications. Author of The Weiser Concise Guide to Practical Astrology, an introduction to horoscope analysis, her most recent book is Shakespeare and the Stars: The Secret Astrological Keys to Understanding the World’s Greatest Playwright. Also available are smaller “Playbill” editions on six of Shakespeare’s best-loved plays, drawn on material from the longer book.

COLIN McPHILLAMY was born in London, England to Australian parents where he trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. His most recent stage role was the bombastic Shakespearean actor “Sir” in “The Dresser”. In the U.K. he has worked in the West End, at the Royal National Theatre for five seasons, and extensively in British regional theatre. In the U.S. he has appeared on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and at regional centres across the country. Internationally, he has acted in Australia, China, New Zealand, and across Europe. His book An Actor Walks into China tells the story of teaching Shakespeare to Chinese students at Peking University. PERSPECTIVES ON WEST NORDIC ART
A group exhibition featuring 21 contemporary artists from the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland and Norway continues through June 20 at Scandinavia House.

New York, NY—The exhibition Inside Voices, Outside Light: Perspectives on West Nordic Art is now on view through June 20, 2026 at Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America. A group exhibition organized by American-Scandinavian Foundation featuring 21 contemporary artists from the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland and Norway, Inside Voices, Outside Light highlights the unique perspective of these North Atlantic territories, who share cultural and historical ties while each possessing distinct identities and communities. With works ranging across photography, paintings, textiles, film, and sculpture, including three site-specific installations, the exhibition also showcases the diversity and complexity of the region.

The exhibition has been critically acclaimed since its opening. In a review for Impulse Magazine, Mána Taylor noted, "Each voice in the exhibition refracts its own distinct light, and while it might not be a single harmony, collectively it makes space for a selfhood beyond the boundaries of national perception... the works exhibited move beyond the surface to hone in on what it means to call a country home."

Ongoing related programming will include Gallery Tours on select Wednesdays at 5:30 PM, with upcoming tours on June 10 & June 17.

Connected through geography and culture including Norse history, reliance on marine resources, and shared Arctic/maritime focus, the West Nordic countries form a distinct sub-region within the larger Nordic area. While Greenland, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands all share colonial ties with Denmark, each country has its own culture and identity, with locations closer to neighbors in the west: Canada, the U.S., the UK and Ireland. Each region also presents a unique perspective.

Borrowing from the title of a collection of poetry by Icelandic poet, translator and film director Sigurður Pálsson, Inside Voices, Outside Light brings together a diverse spectrum of work ranging from the haunting, almost surreal, and authentic images in Inuk Silis Høegh’s four-part film The Green Land, to the high energy and humor of the artist collective The Arctic Creatures, to the intricate and delicate textile tapestries of Ask Bjørlo. With current geopolitical conditions renewing interest in the area, some works also confront misconceptions. Lisbeth Karline Poulsen depicts resistance and strength in reaction to the current annexation threats, while Trine Lise Nedreaas explores our shared experience of a temporal existence in a relentless eternity. The exhibition also features site-specific work by Camille Norment, Hansina Iversen and Jóhan Martin Christiensen.

Our Opening Celebrations in April 2026 included a Curator Panel with Karin Hellandsjø, Kinna Poulsen, Pari Stave and Emily Stoddart on April 16, available to stream here, and a Book Launch and Artist Panel with Kinna Poulsen, Hansina Iversen, Jóhan Martin Christiansen, and Emily Stoddart, available to stream here.

Organized by ASF, Inside Voices, Outside Light is the second in a series of exhibitions celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Scandinavia House — which has welcomed over 3 million visitors since opening its doors in October 2000 — and continues a year-long series of anniversary events. The exhibition has been curated by Emily Stoddart, Manager of Exhibitions at Scandinavia House, with the support of three curator consultants: Karin Hellandsjø (Norway), Kinna Poulsen (Faroe Islands), and Pari Stave (Iceland). Major support has been provided by the Monika and Charles Heimbold Fund for Exhibitions and Programs. Additional support has been provided by the Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation, Nordic Culture Fund, the Office for Contemporary Art Norway, and The Royal Norwegian Consulate in New York.
