What happens when a industrial decade ends? Nobody had a clue in late 50’s what consequences capitalism can have. The Zollverein Industrial Complex is a great example. Old rusty steel everywhere you look around. Since December 2001 Zollverein is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

This device is called a ‘carro’ and I saw it in use a lot in Tupiza, Bolivia, where this photo was taken. In a country where a lot of people don’t have cars it’s an easy way to move heavy goods around. I saw people use them to transport goods to shops, for instance, and to the street market. I like the textures of the wood, the stone and the cobbles in this photo. And the number 45.

A surfer heading out into the water for an afternoon of waves. This was taken on the beach near Encinitas, California. Surfing is a big part of culture and way of life in these beach towns along the Southern California coastline. These folks hit the water before work in the morning, on lunch breaks, after work, all weekend, and pretty much any other time they can get out there.

I love the graphic components of this image - the rich red colors receding away from me with the top of the image accented with small touches of yellow. It’s just a nice image just to gaze upon, and into, for an enjoyable viewing experience.

Last light is a narrow window when photographing in the mountains. The sun shows itself later in the mornings and retires earlier in the evenings…all at the hand of these great giants. I was late arriving on location this particular evening and didn’t think I was going to have much luck. Shadows marched swiftly across the landscape, but this scene suddenly presented itself and rendered the day complete.

Isn’t that amazing how we love shiny things? I took this image one day on my way from work. It was late, lights in the shops were already on, and after a long day of work I longed for colors. Out of the camera this backlight of a car (a BMW X5, I believe, but I may be wrong) came out very orange, and only after tuning white balance, the image began to live.

A view of the beautiful but remote village of Iruya in northwest Argentina. It’s located high in the Andes a four hour drive from the nearest town along a narrow dirt road that rises to 4000 metres before dipping back down to the village. A journey here is like stepping back in time five hundred years.

The sunsets are beautiful in Manzanillo, Mexico. From our veranda, we see one every night. Too many people think the show is over after the sun dips below the horizon. As a “sunset” watcher for many years, I know the rest of the show can be just as spectacular and sometimes much more subtle as we see in this image. It was taken well past the official sunset, but the afterglow played beautifully on the hills and surrounding areas of the image.

This is one of the magnificent buildings on the Princeton Campus in New Jersey. Some of the buildings there are really something to look at. It’s hard to believe that they use these buildings on a regular basis. This one had kind of a stout feeling to it because of the general size of the building. I made it look even bigger by shooting at 18mm with my 18-200mm lens. It has barrel distortion at the low end so it causes the buildings verticals to converge from the perspective I was shooting at.
