The dreaming spires of Oxford University rise out of the centre of the city. These beautiful, ancient buildings really do take your breath away. The round building in this photo is Radcliffe Camara (camara is an old world that means chamber - it’s nothing to do with photography) and is part of the Bodleian library. The building is still used by students today.

This old lifeguard tower is still in full use at Mission Beach, California. As I was walking the beach with my trusty old Minolta Autocord, the tower with the surfboards in the foreground caught my attention.

I recently acquired a Canon 5D Mark II because I wanted all those extra pixels and the full frame. This was the first shot I took with it, and I’ve been very pleased with the camera to date. I can definitely see a difference in what my macro lens produces using this camera as opposed to the Mark III even–the detail is fabulous and the color is no less.

This blue anemone poppy was shot in natural window light with no flash, using the Canon 100mm macro lens at 1/2s, f/7.1 at 100mm iso100.

I saw this children’s bicycle in a small alley in Vienna, and I was immediately in love with it.

This close-up of a white cyclamen bloom reminded me a little of soft, flowing ballet skirts in motion. It was shot using backlight from a window pouring thru some colored glass–the colors of which were emphasized somewhat by cross-processing the resultant image. I had bought some brightly colored glass vases from Ikea and have discovered they have their uses to cast color on other subjects in some interesting ways whilst I am waiting for my gels to arrive.

A certain project forced me to go to work earlier than usual. In fact, “usual” meant “as late as possible”. My involvement with that project is past now, but I still go to work early … and I enjoy it wildly.

It is incredibly beautiful to be out on the streets almost alone, to hear the birds and to see the sun come up.

Winter in Mammoth Hot Springs, YNP, is always a beautiful thing. The geothermal activity spews steamy ghosts, casting soft shadows against the hard light on this particular morning. A spectacular display is always visible, but winter days around 0°F/-17°C will find you in a wonderland of silence and grace.
