The venerable Walters Museum in Baltimore, Maryland is opening up their vaults for Bedazzled: 5,000 Years of Jewelry. The exhibit highlights the passion of Henry Walters (1848–1931) who collected jewelry from a large variety of cultures and periods.

His collection runs the gamut from Mesopotamian stone pendants to masterpieces created by Tiffany and Co. The exhibition brings together more than 200 pieces of jewelry, combining extraordinary highlights from the holdings with objects from the Walters' vaults, the exhibit runs from now until January 4, 2009.

All of this is enough to tell you, in very generic terms, that jewelry has mattered. None of it takes jewelry particularly seriously. Imagine if the Walters mounted a show that claimed to trumpet all the glories of the history of painting, without a single masterpiece on loan from somewhere else. The Abaya, a traditional Islamic outfit for females, gets the “world’s most expensive” treatment on the hands of British designer Bruce Oldfield, a favorite of the late Princess Diana.
“This is the world’s first red carpet abaya,” said the designer of the abaya which is, “only for princesses, my dear.”

The hefty £175,000 ($350,000) price tag is the result of 359.7 grams of white gold and 4,668 individual diamonds. The diamonds, with a total weight of 85.13 carats, were supplied by Harriet Crosley of Crosley Diamonds.

A portion of the sales will be donated to a global relief charity, Islamic Relief. The sale was took place during ‘The Saudi Gulf Luxury Trade Fair’ at InterContinental London Park Lane last August 2-3, 2008.
