Article by: by Richard Woodard from decanter.com

Total shipments in the US, including domestically produced and imported wines, reached nearly 330m cases, up 2% on 2009, according to the report from consultants Gomberg, Fredrikson & Associates.

Estimated retail value hit US$30bn, up 4% on the previous year, the Gomberg-Fredrikson Report said.

Jon Fredrikson pointed to the success of new ‘creative’ wines in keeping consumers excited, including value-priced Moscato, Pinot Grigio and Riesling, off-dry wines and affordable Pinot Noir from inland parts of California.

Sales of high-end wines remained challenging, he added, but marketers were counteracting this by using social media to target increasingly savvy consumers.

Wines from California accounted for 61% of overall US market volumes at nearly 200m cases, up 1%, with retail value estimated at US$18.5bn.

‘US wine market conditions remain highly competitive, but we are optimistic that this growth trend will continue,’ said Bobby Koch, president and CEO of California’s Wine Institute.

‘Americans are increasingly interested in a lifestyle with wine and food, demonstrated by the presence of wineries in all 50 states and 17 consecutive years of growth in US wine consumption.’

Champagne and sparkling wine had a ‘remarkable’ year in 2010, said the report, with a sales hike of 10% suggesting that consumers are broadening their use of these wines beyond pure celebration.

Among Califonian wines, Chardonnay remained the leading grape variety, with sales up 5% to more than 53m cases.

Sales of Cabernet Sauvignon rose 6% to nearly 33m cases, and there were notable sales increases for Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Riesling and Muscat.

What an incredible trip!

Exceptional River Cruise (end of June 2014) in Bordeaux with Accent on Wine where we have tasted Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Pichon Lalande, Château Latour, Château Cheval Blanc, Petrus, Château Fillot, …
We have recently taken a journey on a River Cruise in Bordeaux, France, and we would like to share our experience with you.

Bordeaux to Bordeaux | 8 Days

Day 1: Bordeaux (embark) Arrive at Bordeaux–Mérignac International Airport, where we have being transferred to the ship. Our ship was conveniently docked right in the heart of the city Bordeaux.

Day 2: Cruising the Garone River and Gironde Estuary, Pauillac

FEATURED EXCURSIONS AND WINE TASTING:
Set sail on the Garonne for the pretty town of Pauillac, gateway to the storied Médoc wine route, where we begin a panoramic tour of the heart of the Haut-Médoc AOC. We have enjoyed an exclusive visit and tasting to a celebrated winery, Châteaux Mouton Rothschild, Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande and Château Latour and what an experience we’ve received from each estate. In the evening, we have enjoyed a Captain’s Welcome Reception and Gala Dinner.

Day 3: Cruising the Gironde Estuary, Blaye

FEATURED EXCURSION: Scenic drive along the Route de la Corniche Fleurie with Blaye Fortress
We’ve have sail across the Gironde Estuary to Blaye. The scenic journey through the estuary offers a unique look at the delta, where fishing huts rise above grassy marshlands edged by limestone cliffs. Upon returning to Blaye, our guide took us through the 17th-century citadel built by famed military engineer Vauban. Its fortress and tunnels are a UNESCO monument.

Day 4: Libourne (Bergerac)

FEATURED EXCURSION: Bergerac city tour

On our walking tour of the town we have explored the popular farmers’ market (great strawberry and truffle), hear the fateful story of Cyrano de Bergerac and his Roxanne, and watch the flat-bottom boats glide along the river. We’ve stop at the 16th-century Château de Monbazillac, which offers marvelous views overlooking Bergerac and the Dordogne River.

Day 5: Libourne (Saint-Émilion), cruising the Dordogne River, Bordeaux

FEATURED EXCURSIONS: Saint-Émilion walking tour with wine tasting and private evening tour of Bordeaux

Saint-Émilion offers exceptional historic architecture, and historic vineyards too. The Romans were the first to plant grapes here, and this was the first vineyard region to be protected by UNESCO. The town, built atop limestone hills, offers many interesting shops, but what makes it extraordinary is what exists below the cobbled streets—Saint-Émilion’s Monolithic Church which dates back to the 12th century. After touring Saint-Émilion, we’ve visited the cellars of Château Cheval Blanc in Saint Emilion and Petrus in Pomerol where we have tasted some of the world’s most highly rated wines. Once we were back in Bordeaux, we have enjoyed an evening tour. Bordeaux under the stars—what could be more magical? After Paris, Bordeaux has more protected buildings than any other French city. From the alleyways of the Saint-Pierre district to the avenues of the Place des Quinconces, we have seeing why Queen Elizabeth II deemed Bordeaux “the essence of elegance.”

Day 6: Cadillac, Bordeaux

FEATURED EXCURSIONS: Cadillac, châteaux and vineyards of Sauternes with exclusive artisanal lunch and wine tasting at Château d’Arche

During a tour to nearby Cadillac we have embark on a study of Sauternes, the sweet wine which is named for the region. Sauternes is made from grapes that have been affected by Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot, a fungus that causes a raisin-like decay, resulting in a concentrated and distinctly flavored sweet wine. We have enjoyed an elegant wine-pairing lunch at Château d’Arche. We have also seeing the grounds of legendary Château d’Yquem and Château Fillot. In the evening, enjoy a Captain’s Farewell Reception and Gala Dinner.

Day 7: Bordeaux

FEATURED EXCURSIONS: Choice of exclusive “Do as the Locals Do” Bordeaux walking.
See Bordeaux à pied on a fascinating walking tour of the Golden Triangle, where you’ll encounter the very best the city has to offer. Explore luxury food halls, sample Bordeaux’s famous canelés and chocolates, discover marvelous 18th-century architecture, and visit an elegant wine bar popular with locals.

Day 8: Bordeaux (disembark)

Disembark the ship and transfer to Bordeaux–Mérignac International Airport for your flight home.
