When they were manufacturing the safes and decided to add the extra material so it could withstand the higher temperatures, heat and flames, they had a great idea didn’t they? Let’s face it, normally if you are investing your money into a fire proof safe, it probably means that you are taking precautions to protect your important things or something happened that caused irreparable damage and you don’t want to lose things again. Naturally, you purchased a fire proof safe to protect these items.

Fire proof safes can be used for multiple things and even though I don’t have the statistics here for you I bet a lot of people use them for important documents (such as passports and birth certificates), jewelry, guns and ammunition. If you think about it that makes sense because these are the things you do not use every day but you need to know where they are when you want them. You also want to make sure they are safe and don't get stolen or damaged in a fire.

It is also something grown children look for as the family gets smaller and smaller. They are looking for life insurance policies, titles to the cars and house. It’s funny what some people store in a fire proof safe. Sometimes, it is the little trinkets from childhood they do not want to lose or a lock of baby’s hair from a first haircut. Sentimental value items are quite common in the use of fire proof safes. Why not? They are not expensive compared to losing something you treasure and they can be small enough to be stored in a hiding place or decorated and placed out in the open.

Fire proof safes are made of special fire resistant materials and can withstand the high heat and the fire so if your home or apartment were to catch fire then you want to make sure you let it cool off after a house fire before you try to retrieve anything from it. Also remember where you hide it so you can retrieve it when the others are gone. If you have strangers in your home, a fire proof safe is a good idea for your money and other valuables so they will still be there in the morning. It only takes one unfortunate incident to learn the lesson the hard way.

It may be a case where you are opening a small business of your own and you would like a few of them or maybe it is a case of wedding presents or house warming gifts. It sounds funny but if you think about it they make practical gifts and are usually something that people do not think of until it is too late, ie. either a burglary or a fire has happened and their things are gone.
Maybe it is your first time in a office supply store and you want to know what is available and what the differences are between a regular security safe and a fireproof safe. You may have special requirements depending on what you plan to store and what you want to protect yourself against. This is something that you may want to ask questions about so you want someone to talk to see what the options are and which is a better choice for each scenario.
Safes are known to hold many things and the first that usually comes to mind is jewelry, money, and important documents. If you run a business, you might travel a lot overseas and want to lock up your passport. Mom’s jewelry becomes heirloom pieces and you don’t want anything to happen to them so safes are another way to provide protection and to provide you the feeling of comfort. Safes come in various sizes and styles so when you do your research, find something that you think will work for you and your home.
Realize that you may end up buying more than one if you have different needs and different items that need different protection. One may be for important papers and computer storage media while another for jewelry and money. You might want to keep a safe close by that is easy to access while the other one is placed in a hidden place for better security from theft.

ReadyNAS Duo and ioSafe Solo Workaround

For those of you using the ReadyNAS Duo as your backup server there have been some issues with the ReadyNAS recognizing the ioSafe Solo.

A clever workaround is as follows:

Reboot the DUO with the ioSafe hard drive plugged into the back USB port. Disable the DUO's power timer (this timer shuts down the device at night and powers back on in the AM) and the Solo will work as a backup drive to of your Netgear home media server or business server.
