5 common misconceptions about the Kalashnikov AK-47

1. The AK-47 was made simple for uneducated peasants.
This is probably the most common myth surrounding the AK. It is true that the AK has a very simple design and is, especially compared to contemporary weapons, incredibly easy to field strip and clean. This however, is not due to the supposed requirement that illiterate peasants should be able to use it (as the USSR had pretty good education rates at the time of its creation), but simply because experience has taught that complex things tend to fail during war. Kalashnikov drew inspiration from common complaints about weapons during WWII, for example about the Tokarev SVT-40 which, despite having the advantage of being a semi-automatic, was wildly unpopular for being difficult to field-strip and clean.

Famous weapon designer John Moses Browning did the same thing when he modernized his 1911 design into the Browning HP, simplifying the notoriously complex take-down system and removing as many pins and small parts as possible. Modern weapons continue this trend, especially with military firearms making easy maintenance and fewer moving parts a priority.

2. The AK-47 is inaccurate.
When talking about accuracy, it's important to remember what this firearm was designed to do. During WWII, the Soviets noticed that most engagements took place under the range of 400m, with urban combat often including shots at nearly point blank. The requirement for a new weapon would be one that defined the assault rifle: a maximum effective range of approximately 400m, while being controllable when firing automatic at close range.

This rifle isn't designed to score flawless tight groups while shooting from a bench at a shooting competition, it's designed to hit a man-sized target at anywhere from 1m up to 400m when fired by a highly stressed soldier in a less-than-ideal shooting position. The point is, the shooter will very likely not be more accurate than the rifle, and the accuracy of the AK suffices for most combat scenarios.

That being said, there are different qualities of AKs, the best ones are able to shoot 1 MOA groups or less (2.7cm at 100m), with the average one getting 2-3 MOA groups. Not particularly bad when compared to other general issue assault rifles. (Yes yes, I am aware that your highly customized, free-floated bull-barrel AR will shoot a lot better).

3. An AK doesn't need to be cleaned.
Every firearm needs to be cleaned. That's only to be expected when gases containing powder residue and carbon pass through the rifle. Any rifle that's not properly maintained, will not function optimally, as a foul barrel will affect the bullet, a dirty extractor won't reliably pull out the casing or a dirty magazine might not feed the next round.

That's not to say the Kalashnikov design isn't robust, it absolutely deserves its reputation of being very reliable. A dirty AK will most likely work, if it doesn't, its design makes it pretty easy to clear the jam and continue shooting. However, a clean and well-maintained AK will work better and work longer, as do all other weapons.

4. All AK variants are assault rifles.
The definition of an assault rifle is a weapon that has a rifled barrel, a shoulder stock and a detachable magazine, fires an intermediate round with a range of at least 300m and has the possibility to choose between semi-auto and automatic fire. (selective fire)

The original AK-47 was developed as an assault rifle, as are all of its derivative models in service in various armies. Most countries don't permit civilians to own automatic firearms without special permits though (the notable exceptions being some third-world countries), so to satisfy the large appeal of the AK to the civilian market, lots of companies convert or produce AK-type rifles without the automatic fire selector option. While these AKs look mostly the same as their automatic counterparts, this effectively makes them a carbine instead of an assault rifle.

The Kalashnikov design has become very popular in the civilian market, with different types being designed to conform to specific gun laws in different countries. All of these are still very much AKs, but are not assault rifles.

5. The AK is a copy of the German Sturmgewehr 44.
To anyone who has ever seen one disassembled, it should be pretty obvious that they are not mechanically similar. They are however, very similar in concept. This shouldn't really be surprising, considering both were developed from the same lessons learnt in the WWII Eastern Front. The concept of assault rifles even predates the StG 44, but there's no denying that the Germans were the first to fine-tune it into a usable weapon.

They share most similarity through their munition, as the 7.62x39mm round the AK-47 uses, was developed during WWII as response to the appearance of the StG 44 with its intermediate 7.92x33mm round. Mechanically though, the AK-47 with its one-piece receiver and two-lug rotary bolt barely resembles the StG's two part receiver and canting breech block.

In short, the StG was more complex, used different operating mechanisms and was produced differently. -

By outlawing guns only outlaws will have them! These dumb laws and bans only apply to law abiding citizens. By banning something do you think that will make all the criminals say "Hey I better turn this in before I get caught with it."? The answer is NO! Are all guns practical? Probably not, but neither is a Mercedes Benz other luxury car when you could be driving a Prius. These are cars that people buy because of a "want". Don't get my point yet? Liberals say guns are dangerous because some mentally unstable person or criminal goes and shoots a bunch of people. The same mentally unstable person or criminal runs over a family of 4 then continues to drive into someones house or place of business and the car doesn't get banned. If guns kill people, then pencils misspell words, cars make people drive drunk, and spoons make people fat. Oh and throwing out made up words like "Assault rifle" is how liberals get other liberals to listen! I could "Assault" you with a pencil, doesn't make it an "Assault pencil" right? Assault is a behavior not a device! Wake up!

Fun fact: Choosing to smoke kills more people each year than firearm and alcohol related crimes combined! Yet you can buy a pack at almost any corner store.

If more people had guns and were trained on how to properly handle them the "Crazy" people either wouldn't be so "Crazy" or they would get less shots off before getting stopped by law abiding gun toting citizens.

Saw this crazy critter this morning and was able to snap a picture as I ran from it. It's ok, you may laugh at me, but I've never seen one of these and thought it might have been a large wasp of some kind. I didn't know if it was poisonous or if it just enjoyed chasing me back to my truck. Definitely made for an interesting morning.

How to Treat Your Firearm with Microlon Gun Juice

GENERAL APPLICATION FOR ALL FIREARMS

1. SHAKE WELL! This is extremely important because the lubricating resins in the formula can settle and separate during shipping or storage.

2. Clean the bore of the weapon thoroughly to remove copper, lead and carbon deposits using either Microlon Gun Juice, which is an excellent cleaner, or the product you currently use. 5. Repeat until 8-10 patches with Gun Juice have been pulled the length of the barrel and the weapon has been fired 10 times. Stainless Steel requires 20 patches, due to its tighter structure.

6. Re-sight the weapon, if possible.

7. Microlon Gun Juice may be applied to all moving parts of the firearm by wiping and polishing the parts with a soft cloth moistened with Gun Juice. Heat external metal with a hair dryer or heat gun and work Gun Juice into the metal using a soft cloth or chamois.

ADDITIONAL APPLICATIONS FOR SPECIFIC WEAPONS

Revolvers. In addition to performing steps 1- 7, apply Gun Juice to the center rod to lubricate the cylinder and make it spin more easily. Just raise the barrel in the air and add a few drops to the rod and spin. Repeat as necessary for ease of operation. Also use Gun Juice to clean and treat the individual chambers to ease insertion of shells and to protect the metal surfaces.

Wipe away any excess oil or grease after the slide is sufficiently lubricated.

Rifles and Shotguns. In addition to performing steps 1- 7, apply Gun Juice on rifle bolts, levers, hammers, triggers, and pump-guides on shotguns. It is important to operate moving parts while still wet with Gun Juice so that the resin distributes evenly throughout the metal pores.

CAUTION: Do not let Microlon Gun Juice stand on finished wood surfaces. If possible, remove non-metal parts while cleaning weapons. Wipe excess liquid from wood surfaces promptly. Do not leave container open for extended periods as Microlon Gun Juice will evaporate quickly, reducing its penetrating properties. Any parts treated with the Glock Tennifer process should be treated with Microlon Precision Oiler or Microlon Assembly Lube. Always observe proper gun safety.

NOTE: If you purchased Gun Juice Sportsman’s Kit, you may use the Assembly Lube on all sliding parts of a weapon, such as the guides for the slide mechanism on a semi-automatic, or the pump guides of a shotgun. Excess Assembly Lube should be removed with a soft, dry cloth before using the weapon.

Microlon Treatment Instructions

This is the only set of instructions you will need to install Microlon Metal Treatment into your car or truck. The Engine Only treatment instructions are covered step-by-step on this page. All other applications are covered on the back. It is recommended that you carefully read all instructions prior to installation.

Procedure

1) Oil Change. Change your oil before installing the Microlon Engine Treatment. After treating your engine with Microlon, do not change the oil for at least 1,000 miles. Regular oil change in accordance with your vehicle’s recommended schedule is best.

2) Shake well. Shake Microlon products thuroughly before adding to engine. The Microlon resin is held in suspension only after being shaken up from the bottom of the can. Start engine and let it run until it reaches normal operating temperature.

3) Add 4 0z. Microlon Fuel Treatment. Microlon liquid treats the top of your engine through the fuel system. Make sure to shake the Fuel System Treatment well before adding to the fuel tank.

4) Add Microlon to the crankcase. Microlon liquid treats your engine through the oil. If you are comfortable working on your own car, go to Method #1. If not, go to Method #2.

Method #1

The Microlon Treatment works best when added to a running engine. To add Microlon to a running engine, use the injector bottle included with the kit to add Microlon fluid through the dipstick opening.

Method #2

Start the engine and run until warm, stop the engine, and pour Microlon liquid into the oil through the opening on top of the engine, then restart.

Automatic Transmission.

1) Shake the Automatic Transmission Treatment thoroughly.

2) Add the entire contents through the transmission fluid filler opening. It may be necessary to remove some of the fluid from the Automatic Transmission Reservoir before adding Microlon Automatic Transmission Treatment.

Manual Transmission.

1) Shake the Compound 90 thoroughly, until it is an even color.

2) Add the entire contents to the transmission gear box. It may be necessary to remove some of the fluid from the Manual Transmission Reservoir before adding Microlon Compound 90.

Differential.

1) Shake the Compound 90 thoroughly, until it is an even color.

2) Add the entire contents to the differential gear box.It may be necessary to remove some of the fluid from the differential before adding Microlon Compound 90.

Power Steering Treatment.

1) Shake the 2 0z Power Steering Treatment well.

2) Add the entire contents to the power steering unit using the injector bottle. Consult your owner’s manual for location of the filler opening.It may be necessary to remove some of the fluid from the power steering reservoir before adding the Power Steering Treatment to avoid overflow.
