more Sci-Fi I’ve enjoyed

In the world of Isabel J. Kim’s Sublimation, when you cross a border, sometimes you “instance”. That means there are now two version of you, one at one side of the border, one at the other. People live their “normal” and their (most often) migrant lives on their own, but if they meet again and touch, they will merge again. In the 21st century, there is technology to avoid that, but it doesn’t always work. We follow two / four Koreans with instances both in Korea and the US, who have very different relationships with their instances. They also discover a big secret about a tech firm working in the instancing industry.

Do you think I wrote “instance” a lot? The book is exactly like this, which is a bit grating at times. I liked the concept a lot, and I think it is very interesting, but I’m not sure if it doesn’t fall apart when you think too hard about it, so I tried not to do that. At times it felt like the book trying to do too many things at the same time, and there are a lot of (re-imagined) quotes from myths at the beginning of the chapters, which I could have done without. I think I would have liked this more if it was a little bit shorter, especially the chapters before the big showdown it dragged a bit. Overall, this is a good read if you like “Severance” or non-space Sci-Fi in general.

Another book I’ve enjoyed in the last months

Atmosphere is a story about lesbian astronauts at NASA. I think this is based on the life of Sally Ride, who was the first (known) lesbian in space. Her sexuality was only discovered when she died in 2012, which is a tragedy.

The book has two story lines: Aboard a space shuttle with catastrophic failure and a very slim chance to return to earth, and, for the main part, “flashbacks” to Joan Goodwin’s training at NASA and her relationships with her colleagues and her lover. The dangerous predicament in space gets into the background quite soon, and I’m not even sure if the book had needed it or would also have been fine as linear story.

All in all, I found it interesting, the characters are worth the read, but I wasn’t really in it. I guess this is since I have just binged all of “For All Mankind”, which has a very similar story line. I think the book can be enjoyed more without that baggage.

About two fantasy books I’ve enjoyed in the last months

I’m trying to get back into blogging more, and since I have already written a few reviews for a private discord server, I can copy those as well to my blog.

“The Will of the Many” and its successor “The Strength of the Few” are both great fantasy in a pseudo-ancient roman setting. Main character is a young man we know as Vis Telimus, full-time orphan with side jobs as prison guard and arena fighter. He gets the opportunity to go to some kind of magic school and takes it, even tough said magic is the evil imperialist lifepower-sucking magic that serves only a few people on top.

I enjoyed this a lot, even if it took me a few chapters to warm up to the world and Vis as protagonist. This is, on comments on goodreads and on other places, often sold as “oh wow interesting magic school”, but it is a lot more and it takes quite some time to get to that part. I loved the world building, even if it is quite crass to think about it (our world is probably a lot more uncomfortable if you want to see it as a metaphor for distribution of power and wealth). The “magic system” (if you want to call it that) is also very unique – as far as I can tell, I don’t know all the magic systems of all the fantasy books in the world. Wouldn’t that be a fun project?

The second book opens the world up a lot and brings in more perspectives, which I did not always love, because this style of writing brings cliffhangers every few chapters, when it changes point of view. However, my favorite PoV changed a lot, so I was mostly eager to read more. Some decisions by some character were a bit hard to relate to after the setup of the first book, but I ultimately what is described is not unrealistic: Most of us have very high ideals during our youth and tend to compromise those when we get older.

I’m not thrilled I have to wait for the third book, but sure it will be worth, since there are a lot of open threads and things that have been set in motion. There is also a good cast of side characters, I loved a lot of them. And at least, the author has a blog with updates on his writing process.

IT consultancy Gartner predicts that more than 40 percent of agentic AI projects will be cancelled by the end of 2027 due to rising costs, unclear business value, or insufficient risk controls.

Over 21 days of talking with ChatGPT, an otherwise perfectly sane man became convinced that he was a real-life superhero. We analyzed the conversation.

None of these scenes are real and none of these people exist. Everything – the landscapes, the characters, the music – are AI-generated. The people sharing the video and dozens like it are clear-eyed about this. No one is duped: the comments praise the quality of the AI, and users marvel at how well a fake video can represent what they believe.

Just as Uber’s mission was broader than just individual transport, “AI” has an inbuilt contempt for human interaction (as it is built to automate speech while avoiding any interpersonal friction) and workers (as it seeks to make them even more interchangeable and subordinate to machine processes). Hence, using “AI” often destroys established processes of developing skills and sharing knowledge. Rebuilding them will take much longer and possibly cost more than might have been saved in the meantime.

For the longest time, writing was more expensive than reading. If you encountered a body of written text, you could be sure that at the very least, a human spent some time writing it down. The text used to have an innate proof-of-thought, a basic token of humanity.

As a restaurant owner – I’m astounded at the rate of progress since microwaves were released a few short years ago. Today’s microwave can cook a frozen burrito. Tomorrow’s microwave will be able to cook an entire Thanksgiving Dinner. Ten years from now a microwave may even be able to run the country.

Wer das nicht will, findet unter dem Titel Sabot in the Age of AI eine Liste mit „offensive methods & strategic approaches for facilitating (algorithmic) sabotage, framework disruption, & intentional data poisoning.“

Rollenspielen

The Art of Roland-Garros, weiterleiten.

Nobody will ever convince me that tennis is a sport but I do love illustration and a few days ago I learnt that, every year, the French Open commission a different artist to create a poster for that year’s tournament. You can see all of them on the neatly organised Garros.gallery.

Zumindest in Zürich.

Laut Letterboxd war Thema des Jahres Horror, the undead and monster classics, was meinGefühl bestätigt. You Pissed in a Closet”: Queer Cinema 2010 — 2019 (42 Prozent, + 2 Prozentpunkte), David Freyne’s 25 Favorite LGBTQIA+ Films (72 Prozent, +4 Prozentpunkte), New Queer Cinema (32 Prozent, +1 Prozentpunkt).

„Do you run out of Kleenex, paper towels and toilet paper at the same time? You know it’s true!“

ひそひそ星 (The Whispering Star) (2015) ist einer der atypischsten Science-Fiction-Filme, den ich gesehen habe.

What I played last year

2025 was a good role playing year for me. I’ve played more than any year before, I think. Which is, compared to some people, still not a lot. I think I’m doing good with the time and resources I’ve got, and I’m happy that I can entertain different hobbies.

What I GMed

The biggest change in GMing was the switch to a fixed date (every three weeks) in my Dungeon World group. Before that, we struggled more to find dates and could not play that regularly. We a, even with one player down, still a large group of people, so it’s rare to have the whole group at the table, but we manage.

We had 10 regular Dungeon World sessions, one session of Gegen das Monster/Against the Monster and one where we played One Shot World (which is Dungeon World optimized to play One Shots) and I finally got to run Bakto’s Terrifying Cuisine. Dungeon World is still a lot of fun, even if I encounter more and more things that I (or my players) want to adapt. It fits our quite chaotic play style well, and it isn’t in the way when I do more prep-heavy things like elaborate dungeons or caves. At the end of the year, I got a play mat and we used that for one dungeon and one fight, just to visualize where everybody is or wants to be, and I think that works quite well with the supposed to be cinematic fighting in Dungeon World.

Bakto’s Terrifying Cuisine is a lot of fun. I think I tried to tune down the deadliness a little bit, but that wasn’t that necessary. The biggest problem for me is the hard time/turn limit that makes it very hard to visit a lot of rooms or even to backtracking.

What I played

6 x Worlds without Numbers

3 x Crucible

2 x Beam Saber

2 x Lovecraftesque

2 x Paint the Town Red

Mythic Bastionland

Shadows on the Moon (Blades in the Dark hack)

Ultraviolet Grasslands and the Black City

Hasi, wir haben einen Dungeon gekauft

Going for broke

Fight or Fright

Shiver

Levity

My World without Numbers group played less this year, but we did some foraying into other systems, including a test of Ultraviolet Grasslands and the Black City, which was as confusing as I expected it to be. I already knew I would love Beam Saber, and I had a lot of fun playing what is basically an accountant with a mech.

Paint the Town Red was probably the best experience as a player I’ve had all year. To no ones surprise, a game about sad gay vampires is extremely my jam. I was a little on the fence on playing in ancient Rome, but now I’m in love with that – even if our vampires do their best to be cast out of the eternal city.

Two of the games I played were playtests, also a premiere for me. I can picture myself doing that more regularly, even if I don’t know if I have the best expertise for testing. But most people that will be playing any given ttrpg will be people with very varying degrees of expertise, so I guess there is that.

If I remember correctly, my “let’s try different games and have small adventures” group had two games, and we played Hasi, wir haben einen Dungeon gekauft and Going for broke, which were a lot of fun. Going for broke is in my dice bag, so I always have it on hand if any group runs into a problem and we need something quick to help us out. It’s a bit of a shame that Lovecraftesque comes in a gigantic box, because I think it would be fantastic as something you can just play when somebody cancels last minute.

Endies

I think the suggestion of doing these originally comes from here.

Most played / least surprising inclusion: Dungeon World
Funniest game: Going for broke
Best achievement in delivering on a (not straightforward) goal: Mythic Bastionland
Most memorable ending: Lovecraftesque
Most satisfying crunch: Beam Saber

Plans for 2026

I could just repost most of the covers I posted at the beginning of 2025, because I did not manage to play most of them and those I’ve managed I’d love to play more. I’m not in the mood to make another list, so I’ll just try to play and GM more, try more and more different games. I do want to run Monsterhearts again, and I think I already have some interested people for that. As I got a map making software (thanks Kiki!), I’m going to try to make more maps. Another goal would be to have better statistics, as it seems to much fun to be able to present your personal “wrapped” for ttrpgs. I also hope I’ll be able to write more blog posts about games, but I will not promise anything.

Last but certainly not least, I’d like to thank everybody who played with me this year – it has been a blast and I’m looking forward to more games with all of you!

A small review of the solo, roguelike, world-building TTRPG Crucible.

A few months ago, Chris Longhurst, a TTRPG-designer I like quite a lot (Pigsmoke, Bleak Spirit, See Issue X) announced a new kickstarter, and while I often back his stuff, I wasn’t that excited to be honest. I like solo TTRPGs, but I have a huge backlog of them. And while playing them is definitely playing, it is also writing. Since writing is also my job, I tend to do that less in my free-time. Anyway, I was interested enough by the solo, roguelike concept that I backed.

This was one of the fastest kickstarters I have ever witnessed, there was hardly any time between backing an receiving the finished product. Since I like to collect TTRPG books, I’ve ordered the printed version, which looks good and feels fine. It’s a small booklet – I wish there was a way to make it lay flat, since that would help during play, but I guess that would come with bigger costs hardly possible for a small hobby designer.

The core concept is easily understood and well executed: you are playing somebody escaping a dungeon, namely the Crucible. You start with a deck of 40 blank cards and discover, step by step, what the dungeon is made of. Every run of Crucible features three levels, each level is made out of 4 x 3 cards. Until you uncover the cards, you don’t know if you will uncover a new feature or something you already saw. However, you don’t only uncover the card you’re moving to, but also every card next to it. This means you’ll have some choice: do you risk a fight with an important enemy or do you want to discover what structure that is?

When you uncover a blank card, you roll on a table for a broader category and a sub-category. The specifics are, in most cases, randomized: if you choose to move on that card and encounter it, you’ll uncover the details, also by rolling on tables. This is interesting, because „a named enemy“ can be a dreadful champion, a ghost or just some random stranger. I struggled a little bit to wrap my head around that concept; that is not Chris‘ fault, it’s quite clear in the book, my head was foggy from being sick. My intuition would have been that you create very specific cards, but I think that wouldn’t be a lot of fun after some runs, since it would take out more of the randomness. Some things are, however, permanent: if you roll up a (minor) enemy with the same characteristics as you encountered before, it will be the same enemy.

Encountering a card means finding out what exactly it is and then dealing with that. If your character needs to test themselves, you roll a dice pool: you add dice for favorable traits and subtract them for traits that hinder you – and vice versa for traits on your opposition. If you roll a 5 or 6, you win. You can also spend luck (which is basically your health) to re-roll a dice. I like this system because it’s quite simple, but I find the self-assessment hard. Also, there is a lot of focus on fights, since the numbers are skewed towards the generation of enemy-cards. The game is a roguelike, so no real surprise there. I think I would have been happier if I got to explore more of the other stuff, especially the discoveries that lead to world-building the Crucible.

The last uncovered card of your 4 by 3 grid counts as the stairs up to the next level. Your character changes a little bit, since change is a big theme of Crucible. If you ascend three times, your character escapes the Crucible. If they die, you get to write their name on the card, and maybe they’ll come back as a ghost.

I like the card grid and the randomness it brings a lot, and I’m looking forward to play more and have more non-blank cards. I found it a bit tiring having to uncover a lot of cards in a row, often with quite a lot of skimming through the book. I think a list of objects and what kind of bonus they give would be helpful, but the credo of „do what you think is reasonable“ is good advice.

Speaking of advice, the game tells you to use whatever 40 cards you want, but I’d recommend using cards with a different color on the back than the front. I think it makes sorting and mixing them a lot easier, but that might just be me. You can also follow my example and draw lines on them or something.

All in all, I think Crucible offers an interesting blend of journaling possibilities and a simple, but intriguing roguelike exploration and fighting gameplay loop. You can get it on itch.io.
