Recognizing child allergy symptoms can be a bit of a challenge, particularly for less severe reactions and seasonal allergies. A range and variety of child allergy symptoms, coupled with the normally frequent viral and bacterial infections and flu’s children are predisposed to contracting, often mean that allergies elude diagnosis for a long period of time. For parents, learning how to recognize child allergy symptoms can be the means to relieving chronic discomfort and secondary infections; in the case of a severe allergic reaction, knowing the symptoms of child allergies can mean the difference between life and death.

Mild To Moderate Child Allergy Symptoms

Physicians categorize child allergy symptoms by type and severity, with severity being the most important factor of child allergy symptoms, since that is what determines the ability of the body to function normally. As severity goes, mild to moderate child allergy symptoms pose the least threat to children.

Mild to moderate child allergy symptoms may occur infrequently or on a regular basis, depending on the type and cause of the allergic reaction. Mild to moderate child allergy symptoms include:

Nose and sinus problems - including itchy nose, stuffy nose, or runny nose; sinuses may be sore, cause pressure in the face, or cause headaches; children are often unable to describe sinus discomfort

Frequent sneezing

Itchy and/or watery eyes

Nasal and chest congestion

Dark circles under the eyes

Frequent rubbing or pushing upward on the nose - this often results in a tell-tale red line across the bottom of the bridge of the nose

Chronic ear problems or infections

Snoring or trouble sleeping

Labored breathing or difficulty breathing, including wheezing and coughing and asthma-like symptoms (in fact, asthma attacks can be triggered by allergies in children with allergies)

Hives - red welts on the body

Swelling, particularly of eyes, lips, and face; note also that swelling can become or present as a severe reaction, and for the sake of safety any swelling should be reported to a doctor for further instruction. It is especially important to monitor breathing when swelling exists, as there may be swelling inside the throat and airways which can block breathing.

Stomach upset

Constipation

As a general rule-of-thumb, mild child allergy symptoms are localized and do not spread throughout the body; moderate child allergy symptoms will be increasingly uncomfortable and may spread to various parts of the body, but do not threaten essential life functions.

Mild child allergy symptoms may cause discomfort, but pose no real immediate danger. They are worth noting and discussing with a doctor during regular well-child check-ups.

Moderate child allergy symptoms are also more uncomfortable than life threatening, but do present some medical issues. Moderate child allergy symptoms may cause chronic health issues which equate to illness and prohibit children from participating fully in school, activities, and social life. Moderate child allergy symptoms also have the potential to increase in severity, trigger secondary health concerns and become more emergent. Moderate child allergy symptoms should be discussed with the child’s doctor so that the proper course of treatment and/or prevention can be determined.

Severe Child Allergy Symptoms

Severe child allergy symptoms are those that pose an immediate threat to life. Life-threatening allergic reactions inhibit normal essential bodily functions, and can result in death if not treated immediately.

In most cases severe allergic reactions affect the whole-body and come on suddenly; some severe or life-threatening allergic reactions may result in an emergency situation where swelling of just the upper body and/or face cause the throat to swell and prevent proper breathing or swallowing. Any time breathing becomes significantly impaired (beyond a wheeze or a minor cough), medical attention must be sought immediately.

Severe child allergy symptoms may start with a sudden onset of facial or eye itching that often progresses very quickly into one or more more serious child allergy symptoms, including:

Swelling as described above and/or throughout various parts of the body

Pain in the abdomen

Diarrhea

Vomiting

Cramps

Confusion

Disorientation

Dizziness

Although some of these symptoms are included on both the mild-moderate and severe child allergy symptom list, the most important considerations is degree of effect and time of onset; in most cases severe child allergy symptoms come on quickly and without warning—these require fast action and immediate medical attention, most critically when breathing becomes impaired. Where a child allergy symptom comes on more slowly and progresses over time, there is less cause for concern. The best policy, however, is always to err on the side of caution and call a doctor or hospital emergency room if there is any doubt.

Why A Child Peanut Allergy Is A Concern

Child peanut allergies are of particular concern for four main reasons:

Child peanut allergies cause life-threatening reactions in many cases

Children with child peanut allergies may be extremely sensitive to peanuts and peanut products—some children cannot even be near peanuts or products

Peanuts, peanut oils, and peanut products are found in many foods, and cross-contamination increases the possibility of peanut-causing allergens in others

Child peanut allergies are not usually outgrown

Anaphylaxis is an uncommon allergy symptom for most food allergies, but it is much more common in the case of a child peanut allergy, accounting for 80% of anaphylactic reactions.

What Are The Signs And Symptoms?

The signs and symptoms of a child peanut allergy can come on very suddenly and severely, without warning. It is not unusual for a child’s first taste of a peanut to cause their first known reaction from a child peanut allergy.

Early signs that a child might be experiencing a reaction resulting from a child peanut allergy include:

Runny nose

Skin rash or hives

Tingling of the tongue

Itchy mouth or throat

These symptoms can quickly progress into much more dangerous peanut allergy symptoms and anaphylactic shock. Any time any of the following symptoms are observed, the child needs to seek medical emergency help immediately.

Threatening symptoms of a child peanut allergy may be:

Difficulty breathing

Difficulty swallowing

Swelling of the mouth, lips, or throat

Body swelling

Drop in blood pressure

Dizziness

Loss of consciousness

Confusion

Still other symptoms may result from a child peanut allergy, including

Hoarse/raspy voice

Nausea or stomach upset

Vomiting

Abdominal pain or cramping

Diarrhea

Feeling of being light-headed

Tips For Parents Of Children With Child Peanut Allergies

Any time a child peanut allergy is suspected, it should be discussed with the child’s pediatrician or family doctor immediately. A diagnosis can be confirmed and a plan of action, which will include strict avoidance of peanuts and peanut products, will be devised. Armed with this plan, and the following tips for managing life with a child peanut allergy, parents and caregivers can give the child the best chance at avoiding potentially dangerous reactions.

Learn how to read food labels and look for possible cross-contamination.

Thoroughly read every food label

Keep injectable epinephrine with your child everywhere they go—including at school, sports, and activities, at home and in the car

Carry antihistamine with the child

Avoid fried foods in restaurants, as they are often cooked in peanut oils

Don’t allow your child to eat anything with unknown ingredients

Be vocal about your child’s peanut allergy and make sure all teachers, family members, friends, and family know not only how the child should eat, but also what to do in case of an accidental ingestion or reaction

Develop an emergency plan in case of reaction and help your child memorize it

Teach your child that it is not safe for them to accept food from others unless you give the okay

Pack food for your child to eat at friends’ houses and birthday parties

Encourage frequent hand-washing

Pack a list of especially dangerous foods for your child to keep with him/her

Help your child learn the signs of a reaction and get help as needed

Do not allow yourself or your child to become relaxed about his or her child peanut allergy

To be sure, life with a child peanut allergy can be a scary thing; but when care is taken to properly manage the diet of a peanut-allergic child, and when a clear plan is laid out for emergency procedures in the event of an accidental peanut ingestion, life with a child peanut allergy is much less threatening.

If there is an allergy with the preservatives and additives in foods, the body will let you know in several ways. Each person is different and may react in other ways. But the most common signs of allergies with preservatives and additives is nausea, itchy skin with hives or maybe some diarrhea.

When preparing a meal to cook it, there are ingredients that will need to be blended together to give this meal a good taste. Some of the ingredients added like vegetables or fruit that is dry or juices will enhance the flavor to the food. Some of these additives and preservatives are not good for those who have allergies with them.

Learning what the body is saying is very important. So, if any of these symptoms develop after eating foods with preservatives or additives, take a close evaluation of the ingredients and remove what is affecting your body.

Children are so resilient and love to play in anything at anytime or anywhere. Take the tunnels at McDonald’s and Burger King for example. Those tunnels are long and are not ventilated very well, which means the air is going to be stuffy, making it difficult to anyone to breathe. The more children in the tunnels, the less air there is going to be.

Now, children love playing in the tunnels anyway, so monitoring them is very important. Because the tunnels do not have a way of ventilating, the air is going to be limited, and the children will not be able to breathe as good as they should. This can induce an allergy and/or asthma attack. Therefore, precautions need to be made.

Be very careful in areas such as this. Tight places can be dangerous for anyone who has allergies or asthma.

If you are someone who struggles to eat, breathe or live due to allergies, there is something you need to be aware of. Anaphylaxis is the worst form of an attack of allergies a person can have.

The allergies that some people can have may display a lot of symptoms that make them miserable. Coping with this is tough by itself. But, it can always get worse. For example, if someone is allergic to a certain seasoning then goes out to eat at a restaurant and asks the waiter or waitress if the chef cooks with this ingredient. The waiter will more than likely find out. To take care of the customer, the chef consents to not putting the ingredient in. But, the chef had to do something and walked away, so another took over and did not know about the ingredient. So, the fish was cooked with this particular ingredient. The person eats it and begins to have the anaphylaxis attack. If this person is not treated right away, it could be fatal.

This is a dangerous, but not common type of reaction for the things someone is allergic to. Once ingested or perhaps touched, the reaction takes place with a lot of things that happen together. These symptoms are not spread apart but happen with each other. Not being able to breathe very good, the food cannot be swallowed normal, sick stomach, the chest begins to feel tight and possibly faint. Timing is vital in a situation like this and the best thing to call for the paramedics right away.

CPR is short for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and it is a very important skill that everyone should know. Yet more than 65% of the population has never been through the training for it. Many people don’t realize just how important it is though until they themselves or someone close to them needs such help. Every parent tries their best to protect their children but if you don’t know CPR you are allowing the chance for something bad to happen to them. Anyone you leave your children with should also be certified in the area of CPR.

There are plenty of places that offer CPR classes for free or for a very affordable cost. Check at your local college, your community center, and even at the Red Cross if you have one in your area. Most of the time this will be an all day course or even a two day course. At the end of it you will be certified in the area of CPR.

Look for a CPR program that offers you much more than just a certificate. Find out about the class sizes and the qualifications of the instructions. They are generally medical professionals that want to be able to share this important skill with other people. Find out if you will get a workbook to take home with you as well. Most quality CPR classes though will offer you the chance to practice of mannequins.

It is very important to brush up on your CPR skills from time to time as well. A refresher course can certainly help you to do well when the time comes to use it. CPR can help to save a life in a matter of seconds. You won’t have time to second guess your abilities. You also don’t want to do more harm than good for the person because you aren’t sure of yourself.

Many people have been able to survive choking or another serious issue due to another person effectively administering CPR. Even if medical personnel can arrive in a few minutes it may be too late. If a person has their airway cut off they can die or suffer from brain damage. CPR is an effective tool you can use to help someone to make a full recovery.

There are some very basic types of first aid that a person should know how to administer. Someone in your care or that is around you may end up needing it. Sometimes the situation will be very minor such as a cut. You can get the bleeding to stop for them. Other times it may be a larger situation and your efforts will only be to offer temporary help until the person can be reached by medical professionals.

Even if you don’t have any medical training you should know how to offer basic first aid. If you have children or you care for children this is essential as they tend to get themselves into some predicaments as they are curious explorers. You need to make sure your efforts relating to first aid are going to help the individual rather than causing further injuries to them. Your early first aid efforts should be done to help ensure they fully recover from the incident.

It is a good idea to always carry a first aid kit with you since you never know when you may need the supplies. The truck of all your vehicles should have one so you can help at the scene of an accident. If you go camping or hiking you will want to have items with you in a first aid kit as well.

What you have in the first aid kit will likely depend on what your needs are. For example you may want to have something for bug bites and snack bites in an outdoor first aid kit. Yet you won’t need to keep such items in the ones you carry in your vehicles. Some common items you will want to have in a first aid kit include band aids, an ace bandage, ointment for cleaning wounds, tweezers, and scissors.

It is a good idea to take a basic first aid course. This can help you to stay calm in the event of such an accident. It can also help to ensure you are able to help those that need it. These courses are offered in many different locations and most of them are free of charge. You can also take a first aid course online that will fit into any schedule.

Fish is loaded with benefits and many of the essential vitamins and nutrients that a body needs. A person is supposed to have at least a minimum of three servings per week. The thing is, not everyone can eat fish. Some people suffer an allergic reaction if they eat fish.

There are several types of fish or shrimp that will cause a person’s body to react. When there is an allergic reaction with fish or seafood, the person who has the allergy can begin to show many symptoms. Some of these symptoms are problems when trying to breathe, skin begins to turn red and itch, nauseated stomach or a rash.

For a more severe allergic reaction, there may be some choking if the allergy is not recognized.

Learning the type of fish or seafood is imperative in preventing something like this from happening. Pay attention and notice the small or big things that go on while consuming any type of food.

Baking a cake can be a fun way to spend time in the kitchen and not to mention, cakes are delicious. Eggs are often an ingredient in the making of cakes. Most cakes require eggs, but not everyone can tolerate an egg because of allergies.

When someone eats something that has eggs in it, several manifestations can appear. Nausea, vomiting, a headache, muscle aches, skin rash, hives, swelling and so much more can be the result of ingesting eggs.

Take the flu vaccine for example—anyone who has had an allergic reaction to eggs will not be able to get the flu shot if the vaccine contains eggs.

Many people have allergies to eggs and do not realize it. If there is a problem when eating an egg or egg product, listen to what the body is saying. iIt is probably an allergic reaction to eggs.

In the summertime when the temperatures are hot, bugs seem to want to invade all the fun in the sun. Children are outside playing, especially in the evening time when temperatures are somewhat cooler, and so are the bugs. The bees are swarming to protect their hives and homes, ants, spiders are spinning their webs and every other insect is flying about. When anyone gets too close, the insect will bite or sting.

There are many children and adults who are bitten or stung by an insect that can have an allergic reaction to it. If there is a bee sting or spider bite, the person who is allergic to the venom will begin to swell in that area. The more time goes by, the more severe this reaction can become. There will need to be immediate treatment in a situation like this. Allergic reactions are not so unusual for something like this, but the key is to protect, prevent and react quickly.

The body naturally reacts to stings such as bee stings or mosquito bites. If you swell you are not necessarily allergic to that insect bite or sting. Those that have an allergic reaction that can become life threatening are the people that have to be prepared.
