Our hands on intubation training is included in our ACLS seminar. Participants will be taught on the basics of airway management as well as on the advance airway management. Each participants will have the chance to intubate on a simulated scenario. Furthermore, the participants will also be taught on different adjunct devices from the AED operation to BVM.

The training is based on the latest guideline following the link in the chain of survival applying the latest megacode.

With proper first aid training, providing the care would not be so difficult. Remember that first aid training may give us confidence and the knowledge to handle certain emergencies. Take not however that in providing care, you should not add additional injuries.

The objective of the First aider to provide first aid and prevent further harm.....

Remember the basic rule:

NEVER MOVE AN INJURED VICTIM!!! UNLESS IT IS NECESSARY TO PREVENT ADDITIONAL INJURY OR DEATH

Though moving the victim right away may create additional injuries, certain circumstances allow that the patient should be move. This situations apply when there is the presence of continues threat to the life of the victim or to you. This may include, fire, possible explosion, falling, entrapment or any other conditions that may cause death or additional injury to the victim at the site of the accident.

However, this does not mean that you have to move the victim and bring it all the way to the hospital without first aid care. The victim should only be moved to a safer place so that first aid can be administered without the threat to victims life or to the first aiders.

first aid training

So most probably the thing to remember is the word PATIENT.

This is actually an acronym and by remembering this word, you can give this information to the dispatcher.

P - roblem of the patient

A - ssessment

T - ime of onset

I - dentify exact location

E - xposure to risk, or emergency

N- ever leave the patient

T- reatment or first aid given

This would somehow give you an idea on the basic information that you can provide the dispatcher upon calling for emergency medical services.

first aid training

Knowing when to seek emergency assistance is important. Knowing the difference between a minor injury or illness and a life threatening situation would help you decide whether it is necessary to call for emergency assistance.

When someone is in dire need of emergency care, it is advisable to call for the ambulance right away. Some people will tend to call the relatives, the hospital or a friend. This is a waste of time and should be done only when the ambulance or the emergency providers have been notified already.

The American College of Emergency Physicians have provided this data for guidance as to when to call the emergency medical services.

If the answer to the following conditions is YES... call the emergency medical services.

is the victims condition life threatening?

will the condition become worse and becomes life threatening on the way to the hospital?

are there special equipments needed or skills needed from the emergency medical technicians or paramedics to threat the condition?

would traffic or distance affect the delay of patient in arriving at the hospital?

First aid Kits and Supplies

First aid training

During any emergency, it would be practical to have something that you can use at hand. This could save you ample time in providing first aid to any victim. At home or at work, it is best to have some items for first aid care. These items are what we call first aid supplies or first aid kit and may be place in a bag, or perhaps in a container that will enable us to carry said items to the site of the emergency or place in the medical cabinet at home.

In preparing this items, the settings should be considered. Assuming that you are having this first aid kits or first aid supplies for home use, then this would contain additional items such as personal medications other than the usual items for first aid. While in the workplace settings, this would contain items that most likely will be needed for the common problems encountered at work. (A furniture factory would probably stock on gauze and bandages for cuts and wounds).

In other words, first aid supplies are customized to your needs. There is no such thing as fixed supplies for first aid. However, certain items are recommended for stocking in every first aid supplies of first aid kit.

Common First aid Supplies:

Sterile Gauze Pads (4"x4")

Sterile Gauze Pads (2"x2")

Sterile Eye pads

Sterile Trauma pads (5"x9')

Sterile Trauma pads (8"x10")

Sterile Roller Gauze

Elastic Roller Bandage

Triangular Bandage

Adhesive strip bandage

Antiseptic swipes

Antibiotic ointments

Medical Exam Gloves

Splints (SAM Splints)

Cold Packs

Scissors

Tweezers

Barrier devices (pocket mask, face shield)

Waste bag (biohazard)

Burn ointment

Emergency Blanket

Flashlight

Bear in mind that the above mentioned items are sample items that are usually place inside the first aid kit or first aid supplies container. As mentioned, this can be customized depending on the setting that it is being prepared for. (For company settings it would be advisable to conduct a study or check the records of common problems encountered in the workplace and make an assessment of commonly used supplies to be added for supplies.

IMPORTANT! : CHECK THE EXPIRY OF EVERY MEDICATIONS IN THE FIRST AID SUPPLIES ON A SCHEDULED BASIS!

Expired drugs can cause poisoning. The first aider must insure that the medications given to any person or victim of accident is up to date. Failure to do so may be a ground for lawsuits most especially if damaged has occurred.

First aid training

There are certain diseases that can be transmitted if assuming the first aider comes in contact with these body substances without protection. It would be worthwhile to protect ourselves from this substances by using certain equipments.

The victims body fluids such as blood, saliva are always assumed to be carrying certain diseases. It would be best to have protection to minimize if not totally eliminate the risk. There are different protective equipments that the first aid provider can utilize in the advent of an emergency. Commonly called, Personal Protective Equipments (PPE), this devices can be carried around so that it will be readily available when needed. Herewith are the following protective equipments:

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENTS

Barrier Devices - pocket masks, face shield

Protective Eyewear

Face Mask (Surgical mask)

Medical Examination Gloves

It may also be worthwhile that a first aider should have immunization to some commonly recognized virus. (eg. Hepatitis B)

Consent to Provide Care

First aid training and lifesaving guides

Consent to Provide First aid

When a first aider provides care to an injured person, it is necessary that the permission to provide care has been given by the injured person to the first aider before the aid is given. We have to remember that any person has the right to refuse first aid care under any circumstances.

Providing care without the patients permission may be considered a violation of his right.

The question now is ... What if the patient is unconscious or unresponsive? Do we have to wait until the victim regains consciousness? Don't you think its to late already to do that? What if the victim is not capable of making the right decision? Say for example a child or person with mental disorder?

Expressed Consent - This form of consent is given once the person of legal age, is responsive or alert. It may be given verbally or by gesture such as a nod of the head. A person calling for help during an emergency situation is considered to have given his consent already

Implied consent - this form of consent applies when the victim is unconscious or unresponsive. Any person in a life threatening condition who cannot expressly give consent is assumed to have given permission already.(This form of consent also applies to any person who is unconscious, or who is mentally incompetent, or any to any child wherein the parent or guardian is unavailable to provide consent.
The Good Samaritan

First aid training

Before going any further one must be familiar about certain legal aspects in providing emergency care. Bear in mind that there is always a treat of being sued even when helping someone during an emergency. This usually happens when the care provided has done more harm than good and is not in accordance with the scope of training on first aid and said acts resulted to damage or injury.

Frankly speaking, no one is required to provider first aid care to a victim of injury or illness unless that person has the duty to act. This is based on legal matters. But if we consider our values and morals, I believe that we as an individual, have the moral obligation to assist any person in an emergency.

Laws vary from country to country, from state to sate. Generally, the Good Samaritan law provides protection to any first aider at a certain degree. In fact, if you have read the bible, this law was actually derive from a parable. The Parable of the Good Samaritan.

The Good Samaritan law protects any rescuer as long as the following conditions apply

The rescuer is:

acting during the emergency

acting in good faith which means the intentions were good

not being paid for the act

with no malicious intent or misconduct

acting in accordance with the scope of first aid training and no negligence towards the victim

It is very important to note that the first aider must have proper knowledge and training on different first aid procedures to avoid causing injury or further harm to the victim. Remember that the Good Samaritan Law, protects the individual only for as long as the provider or first aider acted in accordance with proper first aid procedures.

One more thing, remember that consent is necessary to provide first aid care.

First aid training

Scene Safety

First aid training

Before doing anything, the first aider must insure that the scene is safe. Remember that there could be hazards which could cause injury or harm to you and the victim as well. If the scene is unsafe, try to see if you can make the scene safe. If not, then call the emergency medical services. You can also move the victim to a safe area if assuming you can do so without injuring yourself.

Hazards could include, fire, possible explosion, drowning, cave in, entrapment and other life threatening situations that could kill you as you give your aid. So insure your safety first. Remember that dead heroes cannot save!

Never move any person unless it is necessary to prevent additional injury or death. Doing so without proper assessment may worsen his condition or add additional injuries and would probably cause paralysis most especially if the victim has an injured spine or may cause death if the victim has cervical spine injury.

Once you have assessed that the scene is safe, you may now assess the victim and if necessary call for EMS this actually stands for Emergency Medical Services. Most countries have a 3 digit number for EMS. It would be best to know in advance the EMS number to the country where you are in.

First aid is the immediate temporary care given to a victim of accident or sudden illness before the availability of a physician is acquired. It is important that a person must have first aid training.

Knowledge in first aid is of great advantage since this will help you save lives of others and perhaps even your own when an emergency occurs. This site is dedicated to teach people how to handle common emergencies and common medical problems. Hoping this will give the person the knowledge and confidence when the time comes.

This will also introduce you to common equipments that are usually used in giving first aid as well as guide you on how to used improvised materials that you can find in the scene to immediately apply to the victim. Without first aid training, the aid we give to a victim may add additional injuries and worst may even cause the death. It is for this reason that having first aid training is a must for every individual.

Feel free to browse the contents and learn the techniques and procedures on providing care!

The Importance of First Aid and First aid training.

Help for oneself - by knowing the basics of care, a first aider will be aware of life threatening conditions such as heart attack, stroke and other medical emergencies and will be able to call for assistance right away. In other words, the first aider can forewarn himself and can do the necessary precautions as well as take the necessary steps to insure survival.

Help for others - For obvious reasons, with proper knowledge and first aid training, the first aider can definitely help and provide life threatening care to any victims.

Safety Awareness - First aid training also involves safety. In fact the first step in providing first aid is to insure safety not only to oneself but to the victim as well as bystanders. By knowing the common causes of emergency, the first aider can apply in his day to day activity simple and basic things to avoid accidents.

Disaster Preparation - disaster preparation is somewhat a big scope but first aid training can give the first aider the basic knowledge in preparing for disaster or calamities as well how to cope up in the event such incident occurs.

The first aider skills and what is learned in first aid training can often mean the difference between life and death, temporary or permanent disability, and rapid recovery and long hospitalization. Learning this skills and with proper knowledge in first aid can fill the gap and often provide the life saving care prior to the arrival of the Emergency Medical Services.

Most injuries and accident does not require lifesaving care. But most of the time, handling such situation require proper training that will give us confidence in handling such situations.

Many people have taken for granted the importance of learning first aid. It is important to know first aid and not need it rather than need first aid and not know it, as the saying goes.

The good thing about first aid is its applicability. There are people who have taken first aid training simply because they are forced by circumstances such as work and other detailed assignments. Bear in mind however that first aid can be applied anywhere since accidents and emergencies knows no boundary.

So may it be at work, at home or along the road , our knowledge in first aid will go a long long way. Who knows, the life you save may be your own!!!
