In honor of my new tradition of Sunday afternoon yoga classes, this week I’m blogging about different outfit ideas for fashionable fitness wear. Whether you enjoy pounding the pavement on a run, stretching and meditating in yoga, or sweatin’ away in a step class, these outfit combos will keep you looking fresh and trendy even when you’re sweaty and tired!

Contemporary Yoga

This trendy look will make you stand out in yoga class while also keeping you covered and comfy for working on your poses. Explosive, patterned leggings are the hot-ticket item in yoga right now, and these $75 Chandrasana pair are perfect and versatile – you don’t have to wear them only to yoga! They go great with a durable, classic sports bra from Nike and a loose, thin dreamweaver tank top that will keep you cool.

Stylish Sprinting

If running outdoors is more your style, Nike is your go-to source for stylish yet durable active wear. Bright neon running shorts and a zip-up, both from Nike, will keep you visible on streets and trails (always important for your safety!) and show off your bold style. Amp up your look even more with a pair of rainbow, neon running shoes from ASICS, which may sounds obnoxious but they are executed perfectly to just look trendy.

Fabulous for Fitness Class

To stand out and work your style in a group fitness class, start with a pair of trustworthy cropped leggings from Lululemon in a fun color like lime green, and add a hot pink sports bra from Casall. “Keep Calm and ______” shirts are so in right now, so what better way to show your fashion prowess at the gym than with a “Keep Calm and Work Out” racerback tank. A simple black pair of Nike workout shoes keep your feet supported and stylish.

Have you ever gone into a hair salon and asked for a trim, but later realized that they cut of 4 or 5 inches of your Hair? Or did you decide one day that you would try and give your own hair a small trim and completely messed it up? Well I have personally gone through both of these situations and realized there is always a solution for everything no matter how bad it may seem.

There are a lot of amazing hair products out there that people have developed to make everyone feel and look fantastic. John Frieda has a great selection of products for any type of hair whether your hair is blond, Brunette, or even it’s time to repairer your hair, there is something for everyone.

John Frieda Sheer Blonde

John Frieda Brilliant Brunette

John Frieda Full Repair

Another product I found that I really like to use in my hair is a bun maker. This may sound really weird but buns are a big hair trend right now and this makes it really easy to make the perfect bun with your hair.

If you want to use this lovely invention, first put your hair into a tight ponytail. The ponytail can be placed wherever you would like the bun to sit. Then take the bun maker and pull your ponytail throw the hole. Spread your hair around the bun maker and wrap a hair tie around the entire bun maker to hold in place. Take the left over hair and wrap it around the bun. Put in some bobbie pins to hold the hair around the bun maker.

It’s always sad to see a child star tumble into his/her demise. Recently, social media and entertainment news sites have been blowing up with talk of Amanda Bynes’ sanity. First the former lead of the popular Nickelodeon program, The Amanda Show, and the 2003 chick flick, What a Girl Wants, shocked with her new look: messy bleach blonde hair, ridiculous tan, excessive make-up, and those cheek piercings. The first thought that came to mind when I saw pictures was oh no, there goes another one. Another child actress gone bad – to follow in the footsteps of celebs such as Lindsey Lohan or Brittany Spears.

Amanda Bynes Hails a Cab in NYC

The actress’ vulgar tweets directed at other stars including Drake have confirmed that Bynes is no longer the quirky, young comedian that kids of my generation used to imitate and quote in grade school. For this celeb, twitter has proven to be a dangerous mode of self expression. Bynes has publicly insulted her ex, Kid Cudi, and attacked Complex Magazine, claiming that the publications’ stories about her are fake. She also admitted that she no longer speaks with her parents.

Amanda Bynes Twitter Pics

There have been claims that Bynes was evicted from her NYC apartment for smoking marijuana and breaking building rules. Then there is the viral self-shot video of Amanda staring into the mirror, making odd kissy faces to house music. It seems as if she is under the influence of some substance, but there has been speculation that Bynes may be acting outlandishly on purpose. Is she trying to prove a point about social media, or is she the victim of its instantaneous accessibility?

I personally, am saddened by Bynes’ unraveling. With every child star who’s reputation crashes and burns, there is a sense of lost hope. Such a series of events encourages the notion that child stars are doomed to change for the worse with their coming of age. Then again, there are plenty of child actors and actresses who seem to have been more than successful in their endeavors – take Natalie Portman, Dakota Fanning, Emma Watson, or Leonard DiCaprio. Regardless of whether or not Bynes is acting with purpose, she is certainly attracting attention in all the wrong ways. But who knows? Maybe this is just the precursor to the ultimate celebrity comeback. I guess only time will tell.

Fashion and blogging have gone intergenerational, and Advanced Style by Ari Seth Cohen is proof that style is ageless. As if to prove him right, designer Marc Jacobs dedicated his Fall 2012 collection to women “who are becoming more flamboyant with age.” Yes, we know, many trends are for the younger generation but it’s the seasoned fashionista who exudes real style.

Marc Jacobs Fall 2012

The Style Crone Hits Manhattan

Recently I was fortunate enough to be offered a job organizing a vintage collection, but little did I know just how fabulous the woman I’d be working for would be. Judith Boyd, a radiant red head, recently celebrated her 70th birthday. Style Crone is Judith’s blog that is dedicated to the older woman “in her most creative, outrageous, authentic, powerful, adventurous, funny, and proud era.” With frequent trips to New York City and Judith’s blog connections, she was introduced to Ari Seth Cohen and not long after featured on his blog and in his book called Advanced Style.

Well-dressed and rarely caught without a structured hat, Judith lives a fascinating life and has unforgettable style. She is the perfect example of a beautiful woman enamored in fashion but also so in love with living in the now and not worrying about what’s to come tomorrow. Judith exercises her creativity with her unending love for fashion, wearing what makes her feel good.

“If people don’t like what I’m wearing well, that’s their problem not mine,” said Judith with a smile on her face at the Haus of AiC meeting, where she was just a guest speaker. Inspired by diversity and individual expression, Judith finds inspiration everywhere. Choosing her outfits is a way to express herself creatively. Presently, Judith sells vintage clothing, hats, and accessories in her studio.

Ari Seth Cohen has a dream job, roaming the streets of New York in search of the “most stylish and creative older folks” and then documenting it for the world to read. What a reward it would be to spend a day with someone like Ari in search of someone like Judith. Embrace your individuality and be inspired by these women like I have been. Join Judith as she blogs about “all the exploits, explorations and the art of life” at www.stylecrone.com

.

Be sure to check out Ari Seth Cohen’s blog too, at www.advancedstyle.com, and purchase your copy of Advanced Style. It makes a great coffee table book!

Fashion isn’t just for the young; it’s for the young at heart. I am sure that if you younger fashionistas ever get the chance to meet Judith Boyd or any of the over-60 set featured in Advanced Style, you will find yourself saying that you can’t wait to get older! And when you do reach that point, don’t limit yourself to age-specific style expectations.

“And the road to life yes it goes up and down, Doesn’t really matter as the music goes on.” Come back next week as we kick off concert season at Red Rocks. Slightly Stoopid is excited to return to legendary Red Rocks on 4/20/2013 for a concert featuring Karl Denson with Cypress Hill and special guest Tribal Seeds.

Ever have those days when you have nowhere to go and nothing to do, and you are absolutely bored to tears? Ever have those days that you are forced to stay in a particular location due to adverse weather conditions? Well for those of you in Colorado, you know what I mean, and for those of my readers who are not currently in my hometown of Denver, Colorado, there was a snow storm that recently shut down highways and caused many people to be snowed into their homes…IN APRIL. But, all bitterness to the weather forecaster aside, what is a person to do when one has nothing to do. My personal philosophy is TV. Yes, I know, it’s a typical “American” answer, but I’m a fashionisto who is snowed in! How else am I to pick up on current events? But one of my favorite things to do while stuck in my house is to watch movies. So needless to say I have watched a bazillion films. Since I have my degree in fashion I tend to gravitate towards movies that have good costumes or accurate fashion. Since most of my readers haven’t studied fashion I thought it would be a novel idea to create a list of movies to see that can help educate the masses in terms of accurate historical/vintage clothing. Set chronologically of course.

Chicago- Although people probably didn’t break out is song about murder too often in the 1920’s, the costuming in this movie is phenomenal, which is probably why costume designer Coleen Attwood won the academy award for best costume that year. Everything from the flashy flapper-wear to the dapper suit and ties, down to the last button, this movie is a perfect representation to 1920’s historical fashion.

Rebel Without a Cause- One of my personal favorite vintage films. This movie is actually one of the few movies on the list that was made to be “current” in the time it was made. Released in 1955, iconic actors James Dean and Natalie Wood bring to life the story of a boy coming into his own when he moves to a new town. Aside from the stunning performance by James Dean, the costuming is actually clothes they wore in 1955. The big thing about male fashion in the 1950’s is the T-shirt. Men would wear it as an undergarment until this decade, when they started wearing it as a garment. And you can bet red bomber jacket sales sky rocketed with the release of this film.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s- Fast forward a decade to the 1960s, where fashion was free and women were revolutionizing fashion by wearing pants for the first time. Not only is this movie a good representation of the 60’s vintage fashion, but it represents the ideals of strong independent women, which frankly up until this point were background noises. Including costume work by Hubert de Givenchy, the classic long slimming black dress has made its stamp on cinema fashion.

Saturday Night Fever- DUH. I mean it’s John Travolta in the iconic disco, polyester leisure suit. Again, made in the decade of which it is representing, SNF is the way people of that generation choose to remember 1977. Exuberant and eccentric this movie really made John Travolta’s career, so if you don’t watch it for the sheer fashion education value, watch the film that made one of the most iconic stars of all time.

Breakfast Club- Probably my FAVORITE movie of all time, this movie made in 1985 captures the essence of what it was to be a teenager in the 80s. In a time of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, this movie really embodies the teenage experience, everything from getting into trouble to parental issues. Not only is this movie fantastic because of the plot but because of the costuming. It is one of the only movies that shows more than one facet of youth fashion. Normally movies focus on one group of fashion followers, the Breakfast Club focuses on five, distinctly different groups and the “threads” they wore.

Clueless- What else was I supposed to pick? 50% of this movie is all about fashion. Generally a movie will showcase the fashion in one or two scenes just proving the movie is current, but clueless kills the 90’s fashion aesthetic in every scene. If there was ever a question as to what was popular in the 90s, this movie answered to almost every major trend during that decade, focusing mainly on the “prep” megatrend.

Beyond the 90s, I think you guys are allowed to make the calls. Which movies do you think are the most relevant in terms of fashion??

This Wednesday, April 17th, marked the 12th annual Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. It all began in 2002 when the event was founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Craig Hatkoff. What began as a means of unity for a community significantly impacted by 9/11, evolved into a means for making independent films both by up and coming, as well as established directors, accessible to the public. The Tribeca Film festival has supported rising talent by screening over 1,300 films from over 80 countries since its debut. The coming week will bring with it 53 world premiers from 37 different countries.

Robert De Niro at the 2010 Doha Tribeca Film Festival – Day 3

I believe that independent cinema has so much more to offer than big screen cinema. Sure, we can all admit to loving the classic drama, special effects, and elaborate sets that are expected of Hollywood features, but indie films can have all of these qualities too. It is not uncommon for some to associate “indie” with a small budget, and though there are participating directors who are strapped financially, their creativity and passion makes up for money related obstacles. In fact, lack of funding in some cases actually makes for a more intriguing, raw product. It forces directors to use their resources inventively and/or put more of a focus on the acting. As for NYC, economic activity is actually bolstered by $725 million.

If you happen to be in the area, take a look at the online screening calendar and see if anything strikes your fancy. If not, pick a random film – you’ll probably be pleasantly surprised. Why not seize the opportunity to take part in this cultural event that has attracted more than 3.7 million attendees, while supporting both local and international independent filmmakers? With the variety of dining options in the area, the festival may even provide you with something to put on your itinerary for a perfect date night!

Single tickets are relatively cheap, costing roughly $8.00. They can be purchased online, or you could opt for a festival pass. You could also try the RUSH ticket lines which form 45 minutes prior to a showing, and are based on availability (note that 1 RUSH ticket is allowed per person). The festival ends April, 28th. If you can’t make it to NYC, there is always the Tribeca Film Festival: Online Competition, for which four shorts and four features will be screened for a limited time. Viewers can then vote online for their favorites. Otherwise, you can choose from an assortment of genres including comedy, drama, shorts, documentaries, foreign languages, thrillers, etc. Let us know which films are your favorite!

Everyone around the world follows fashion week in New York, Milan, London, and Paris. I bet a lot of you here in the U.S., including myself, were un-aware that there was a fashion week going on in Lima, Peru. Lima, Peru is a place full of interesting culture and amazing people. This South American country is boarding the South Pacific Ocean between Chile and Ecuador. Peruvians enjoy eating mostly rice, chicken, and flan. They live a relaxed lifestyle, but are also very hard working.

Lima just held there third annual fashion week. Fashion week is an excellent opportunity for fashion designers all over the world to come together and share their collections they’ve been working on throughout the year. Peruvian designers such as Ani Alvarez-Calderen, Amaro Casanova, Elfer Castro, Moda & Cia, Sitka Semsch, and Jimena Mujica all participated and showed extraordinary designs to the public. Each of the designers showed their unique styles with individual aesthetics.

Here are a few of the collections shown at Lima Fashion Week

Amaro Casanova Collection

Sitka Semsch

Peru was also recently featured on A Vogue magazine cover. Mario Testino takes people from the Vogue administration on a tour around his hometown. This Magazine hit newsstands on March 22nd, so all of you should go and check it out.
