A math scoot is an engaging, movement-based activity where students rotate around the room, visiting cards posted at different desks or stations. Each card features a problem to solve, and students record their answers on a numbered recording sheet. It keeps kids moving, thinking, and excited about math- without adding extra prep to your day. (Read More about How to use Math Scoot games in your classroom/homeschool HERE!)

About This Free Missing Number Scoot Game

This freebie focuses on finding missing numbers on a 120 chart. Each scoot card displays a portion of a 120 chart (an extended hundreds chart that continues the number pattern beyond 100 up to 120) with one missing square. Students look at the number patterns around the missing spot, then write the missing number on the recording sheet.

This activity is perfect for building:

Number sense up to 120

Counting forward and backward

Place value understanding

Mental math strategies

Pattern recognition on a number chart

Kids love the puzzle-like challenge of figuring out “what number belongs here?” and teachers love seeing how their students use math reasoning to solve each card.

Missing number activities help students develop a deeper understanding of how numbers work together. When students look at the numbers around a missing square, they’re using key skills:

Counting by 1s

Understanding how numbers increase and decrease

Recognizing vertical and horizontal patterns on a number chart

Thinking flexibly about number order

Plus, because this scoot uses numbers up to 120, it supports first grade end-of-year expectations and works beautifully for second grade beginning of the year number routines as well.

What do teachers say about Math Scoot games?

If you’re looking for a fast-paced, low-prep way to get your students practicing essential math skills, then Math Scoot games might be just what you need!

I’ve created dozens of Math Scoot games for grades K–2 (and beyond!), and they’ve become a favorite among teachers and students alike. In this post, I’m breaking down exactly what a Scoot game is, how it works, and the three flexible ways you can use them in your classroom or homeschool.

What Is a Math Scoot Game?

A Math Scoot game is an interactive activity where students solve a series of math task cards. Each card includes a question or problem aligned to a specific skill, and students record their answers on a response sheet.

Traditionally, students scoot from desk to desk, but the beauty of this game is how flexible it is! There are three easy ways to play, depending on your setup and student needs.

Who are Math Scoot games for?

Math Scoot games work well for a wide range of learners. They’re especially effective for students in grades K–2 who benefit from movement, repetition, and visual practice. Teachers in both public schools and homeschool settings use these games to reinforce math concepts through hands-on engagement. All ages can enjoy and benefit from Math Scoot games!

Three Ways to Use Math Scoot Games

1. Traditional Scoot Around the Room

This is the classic method! Place a numbered task card on each desk or around the room. Students move from one card to the next, solving each one and recording their answers. Printable arrows placed next to each card/question show students where to scoot to next. Use a timer to keep the pace quick and energizing. Alternatively, you can have the students remain seated and have the cards scoot around the room! Perfect for days when movement isn’t ideal. Instead of students moving, the task cards move! Pass them around from desk to desk (or hand them out in groups), and students work on them from their seats.

2. Math Around the Room

Math Around the Room (also sometimes called Solve the Room) is perfect for an independent math center. Instead of a whole group Scoot game, students work on the cards independently. You post the cards around the room, and students move around the room looking for them and recording their answers. Students still get movement and practice, but this leaves opportunities for you to work with small groups and have other students complete other center activities. I always include two sizes of math scoot cards so you can choose to use the mini sized cards to more discretely post them around your room.

3. Use as a Math Center or Independent Work

Use the cards in a small group, as an early finisher activity, or part of a math center rotation. Students can work through the cards at their own pace—great for differentiated instruction or homeschool settings. Place cards in a fun or themed container for extra engagement and interest.

Can You Use Scoot in a Homeschool Setting?

Absolutely! I homeschool my own child, and Scoot works beautifully at home too. Just lay out the task cards on a table, post them around the room/house, and have your child move from one to the next—or use them as part of independent practice. It’s a fun alternative to traditional worksheets.

Ready to Try Scoot?

Try using them during your next math block and see how much your students enjoy the movement and problem-solving practice.

Who wants to track summer reading?! Summertime is quickly approaching! I know many teachers ask students to read at home for 20 minutes nightly. I did the same thing when I was in the classroom. But as I’m sure we all know; routines tend to go out the window once summer vacation rolls around. I created free printable summer reading logs to help motivate your child to keep up their reading practice during the summer break from school.

Why is it important for kids to read daily, especially during the summer?

It is important for kids to read during the summer for several reasons:

Preventing the “Summer Slide”: Summer break often leads to a loss of academic skills and knowledge, known as the “summer slide.” By engaging in regular reading, kids can maintain their reading proficiency and prevent a decline in their literacy skills over the summer months. This better prepares them for the school year ahead.

Continued Learning: Reading during the summer allows your child to continue learning and expanding their knowledge outside of the school environment. They can explore different subjects, discover new interests, and deepen their understanding of various topics through books. They may not always have these opportunities during the school year when they have less choice in what they must read. Summer is the perfect time for them to dive deeper into their interests and explore which type of reading material they enjoy the most.

Vocabulary and Language Development: Reading regularly helps kids improve their vocabulary and language skills. Exposure to a wide range of words and sentence structures in books enhances their language proficiency and comprehension abilities. Reading practice improves reading fluency.

Reading Comprehension: Regular reading practice during the summer helps children improve their reading comprehension skills. They learn to understand and interpret different types of texts, make connections between ideas, and draw conclusions based on the information they read.

Imagination and Creativity: Reading stimulates children’s imagination and encourages them to think creatively. Through books, they can visualize characters, settings, and events, and create their own mental images of the story. This helps foster their creativity and imaginative thinking.

Enjoyment and Relaxation: When I was a child I spent most of my summer vacation reading books. It was something I enjoyed doing. It offers an escape into different worlds, adventures, and stories, allowing children to unwind and enjoy their free time during the summer. Reading can be a fun hobby. Your child doesn’t have to read alone either. Spend time reading together to find topics you both enjoy and can discuss.

My son is still very much into unicorns and magical and mystical things. I decided to create a summer reading log to help ensure he continues to read daily throughout the summer. I don’t anticipate a problem with this, but it’s always fun to have a super cute, unicorn tracking sheet, right?

Free Summer Reading Logs

These fun, simple summer reading logs can be used to encourage summer reading (or can be used at any time by choosing one that is not month specific).

There are four reading log options in each design (Unicorn and Dragon):

Unicorn Summer Reading Log: Color a cloud for each book read

Unicorn Reading Log: Color a cloud for each day read (Write in month)

Unicorn Summer Reading Log: June

Unicorn Summer Reading Log: July

Dragon Summer Reading Log: Color a cloud for each book read

Dragon Reading Log: Color a cloud for each day read (Write in month)

Dragon Summer Reading Log: June

Dragon Summer Reading Log: July

You can print these on colored paper for more fun! You could also laminate them and re-use them every month. This would also cut down on paper usage.

I posted these for free on my Teachers Pay Teachers store. There are four different unicorn reading logs as well as four dragon ones. I know not all boys are into unicorns as much as my son is, so I thought a dragon would be a good magical alternative.

I have been planning for the next school year for months now. The time has been flying by so fast! We are two weeks (8 days after today!) from the end of our homeschool year, and I know many of you out there are winding down your year as well. You likely have already received some information or dates regarding next school year. This is always a busy time of year for teachers – wrapping up one school year while preparing for the next. If you need a special place to keep track of all of next year’s plans and events, you might be interested in this year’s Erin Condren Teacher Lesson Planner!

This Year’s Designs

Samantha, from EC, let me know that this year’s designs are about harmony-making peace with plans that won’t be 100% what you might expect or what they were before- mixing and matching and celebrating little wins and moments along the way. The designs aren’t just literal but also metomorphical:

Isn’t that what teaching is all about? Different students from different backgrounds and cultures, working together (and with you) in your classroom. You create a peaceful classroom, full of harmony, growing and changing and experimenting with new ideas and strategies. It can be so stressful, especially in today’s world, but there can be so much joy if you take the time to look and notice.

The Coiled Teacher Lesson Planner

The coiled planner is a solid choice, especially if you have never used an Erin Condren teacher planner before. There are many interchangeable cover options. Speaking of covers, the inside of both the front and back covers can be written on with a dry erase marker, although a wet erase marker works best to prevent smudging and smearing. Included in the planner are pages to keep track of events and volunteers, parent communication, a year at a glance, graph paper pages, monthly calendars, weekly lesson plan pages, checklists, stickers, a sheet protector, and a folder to tuck in important things. The paper is SUPER high quality and thick. The planner features tabs on to mark each month as well as the checklist section.

The planner pages are dated and labeled so that your day goes across the two pages. There are 5 rows (one for each day of the week) and 7 columns across the 2-page spread. The last column is not divided into boxes. This can be used for notes, reminders, or extra space for lessons.

The Softbound Teacher Lesson Planner

I’ve never used a softbound teacher planner before, and I actually kind of love it! Its missing some of the features (monthly tabs, sticker sheets, folder, page protector), but it is much more compact in size without the large coil. It really does lay flat, and includes a ribbon bookmark. It feels wonderful to hold in your hand. It’s soft and flexible. The only downside, for me personally, is the lack of options. I prefer bright colors, and the exterior of the softbound planners are much more muted and/or floral. I’m not a floral gal, but it is a beautiful design. The inside weekly planner pages of the softbound planner are pretty much the same as the coiled option, but does include a fancier font for the month and year in the corner.

There are some fun writing tools this year! I love the Erin Condren dual tipped pens, but this year I received some of the new dual tip markers that have a black, fine tip at one end, and a fun, colored functional stamp on the other end. These are great for using with to-do lists or in a bullet journal if that is your jam. I had a little difficulty with the stamp that was a solid circle. It may stamp better the more you use it, but I did want to mention that was the only one I had any trouble with. I also received a single pen with black ink which features an adorable red heart at one end! (The package said red ink, but the ink is black.) The heart dual tipped marker will be the free gift with purchase of a teacher lesson planner (while supplies last!).

New Lesson Planner Cover Options

The last items I received were two fabulous interchangeable covers. The first cover is the Finger Painted Petals from the EttaVee X Erin Condren collaboration. I already said florals aren’t really my thing, but these painted florals are beautiful! I love the bright colors and the textures of the paint. It’s a really lovely cover. It’s perfect for a art teacher or anyone who loves bright colors. The second cover is the more classic Rainbow Apple cover. Both are so colorful and right up my alley!

There are tons of other items coming out as well including totes, backpacks, clipfolios, and more! And many of the classic EC products like stickers, address labels, planner folios, pencil cases, and planny packs are coming in fun new colors and prints!
