We are sharing the 'YELL Website Health check Guide' with all our website visitors, subscribers and our current supported customers.

It is a really useful guide that you should retain for reference and share with any staff or personnel that may be involved (indirectly or directly) with the management of your website.

The guide sets out all the standards of good website design that First Stop already adheres to, and that we always try to instill in our customers website strategies and practices.

Scroll through any of the 1,970 Zoom employee profiles on LinkedIn and you will find a lot of earnest statements. The workers at the California-based tech company are “transforming the way organisations communicate” or “making the world a better place one connection at a time.” But the mission statement used by the greatest number of Zoomers is “delivering happiness to our users!”

In normal times, it’s easy to be cynical about this Silicon Valley-style perkiness. But as lockdowns and social distancing prompt a global retreat into our homes, Zoom usage has surged. The remote video conferencing provided by the company has connected home workers with one another, as well as allowing friends and families to stay in touch. In the era of corona virus, Zoom has perhaps truly become a tool for creating happiness.

The firm was founded nine years ago by Chinese-American businessman Eric Yuan, 50, formerly vice-president of engineering at US technology giant Cisco Systems. By 2015, 40 million people had taken part in a Zoom-hosted meeting. In 2019, the company went public and was valued at $16bn.

But this growth has now been far exceeded: Covid-19 meant Zoom’s daily active user base grew by 67 per cent in the first three months of this year.

Crowdfunder launches fee-free platform for charity fundraising

Crowdfunder launches a fee-free platform for charity fundraising today, with transaction charges covered, no fee taken on Gift Aid, and platform fees set to 0%.

According to Crowdfunder, this makes it the only crowdfunding platform to offer 100% fee-free fundraising to charities and people raising funds for charities, with donations received administered by Charities Trust, including Gift Aid, to ensure that 100% of both go to charity.

Supporters will be asked if they want to “tip” the platform to cover costs, but this will be optional.

Simon Deverell, Creative Director, Crowdfunder said:

First Stop Web Design ( a sister enterprise of Naphtali & Associates ) has recently announced its intention to donate 10% of all new design projects to the National Mikey Powell Memorial Family Fund .

First Stop has already worked with campaign group 4WardEverUK to provide a free web design service for families affected by deaths in custody, and now wants to do what it can to support the ongoing appeals to raise much needed funds for the initiative.

The National Memorial Family Fund is the first permanent national resource of its kind specifically for those that are affected by deaths in custody. We will make small grants available for families and their campaign groups across the United Kingdom to provide practical domestic assistance, to further the work of their own campaigns or to assist them in engaging in a range of other local, regional or national campaigns, events and initiatives.

Larry Fedja, a freelance design associate with First Stop said;

“First Stop has always operated on the basis that it is not just a trading collective, but also has a responsibility to support social action wherever it is able to.

“We hope that our small gesture will encourage others to give what little they can to support the hundreds of families and children that have been bereaved.”

First stop will introduce the arrangement from April 2020 for an undisclosed period.

Keep it private with Privacy Badger

Privacy Badger is a browser add-on that stops advertisers and other third-party trackers from secretly tracking where you go and what pages you look at on the web. If an advertiser seems to be tracking you across multiple websites without your permission, Privacy Badger automatically blocks that advertiser from loading any more content in your browser. To the advertiser, it’s like you suddenly disappeared.

When you view a webpage, that page will often be made up of content from many different sources. (For example, a news webpage might load the actual article from the news company, ads from an ad company, and the comments section from a different company that’s been contracted out to provide that service).

If as you browse the web, the same source seems to be tracking your browser across different websites, then Privacy Badger springs into action, telling your browser not to load any more content from that source. And when your browser stops loading content from a source, that source can no longer track you. Voila!

Does Privacy Badger consider every cookie to be a tracking cookie?
No. Privacy Badger analyzes the cookies from each site; unique cookies that contain tracking IDs are disallowed, while cookies that perform other functions are allowed. For instance a cookie like LANG=fr that encodes the user’s language preference, or a cookie that preserves a very small amount of information about ads the user has been shown, would be allowed provided that individual or small groups of users’ reading habits could not be collected with them.

As a UK registered business, you will need to disclose certain information about your company on your website. This is a legal requirement. Failure to comply can result in fines, action taken by the customers or consumer protection bodies, as well as damage to your reputation.

Is your business website legal?
You must display registered information relating to the identity of your business. This includes:

company name
registered number
place of registration
registered office address
contact details, including an email address
details of how to contact business by non-electronic means
the VAT number of business, if applicable
details of any trade body or regulator registration

Guide for display of company call costs

From July 2015, the costs to call Non-Geographic numbers will be fully transparent providing reassurance to your callers and driving an overall reduction in the cost to call 084 numbers.

Callers to numbers starting with 084 or 087 (called “Non-Geographic” Numbers) will see the cost to call these numbers broken down into two parts:

The Service Charge: This is the amount we (check with your provider) charge callers and is no more than 7p per a minutes inclusive of VAT.
The Access Charge: This is an optional charge that may be added by the callers provider (e.g. Sky, BT, Virgin etc.) as detailed in their call tariff.

This will help your callers to understand not only the exact cost of making the call but also who they are paying the call charges to.

These changes proposed by Ofcom and the telephone industry are designed to deliver clearer pricing for people calling Non-Geographic numbers and are being implemented as of July 2015

Included in the new guidelines is also an obligation from July 6th 2015 for the number owner to display pricing information for callers wherever the number is displayed (e.g. printed media, websites etc.)

From the 6th July 2015 when advertising your 084 number you will need to display pricing information in the following format: Calls to this number will cost 7p per a minute, your telephone provider (including mobile providers) may add an additional access charge.
