Terry Lawton reports that a visiting angler has caught an exceptional wild brown trout from one of the new chalk streams created within the curtilage of Vitacress Salads' Lower Link Farm at St Mary Bourne, Hants. The fish - estimated to weigh more than 5 pounds - was seen lying in a small stream close to the end of a culvert, 50 yards upstream of the viaduct shown in the famous view from Chapmansford bridge.

Fish Legal has expressed surprise at what it sees to be the Environment Agency’s apparent lack of concern at the severe and potentially toxic algal blooms in Llyn Padarn, home to one of the rarest fish species in Wales, the arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus). The Agency recently described the algal bloom as a “natural phenomenon”. We now also have the Welsh Environment Agency's response added to provide both sides of the story.

Fish and Fly Ltd helped organise a new charity fly fishing event which took place on the 19th June. The venue was Meon Springs trout fishery in Hampshire which welcomed over 70 specially invited fly fishers along with their pro-celebrity captains led by Sir Ian Botham, already a noted celebrity angler with a TV series and book - "Botham on Fishing" under his belt, and Charles Jardine who is probably the pre-eminent fly fisher of his generation. Other celebrity captains included soccer pundit Robbie Earle and musician Gary Brooker. There is a short slideshow from the day inside.........

Wandering salmon proves expensive for Fish Farm

In an unprecedented move a leading fish farming company has paid compensation to wild salmon managers following the escape of juvenile salmon from a freshwater farm. This follows the discovery last September by the River Forth Fisheries Trust (RFFT) of juvenile farmed salmon in the River Devon, a tributary of the Forth, at a site immediately downstream of a fish farm operated by Mainstream Scotland, part of the giant Norwegian salmon production conglomerate CERMAQ. The company initially refused to accept that the fish originated from its facility - even though the location at Fossaway Bridge is upstream of a waterfall that is impassable to wild salmon.

Big salmon bonanza continues in Norway

The fishing in Central Norway, with its major rivers, Namsen, Verdal, Stjørdal, Gaula, Orkla and Surna, added another 1,900 silvery fish in the last two weeks, totalling over 3,700 so far, even if the fishing has been hampered by cold and wet weather. The average size, counting all reported fish is still above 7.6 kilo (17 lb) and with Gaula on 8.1 kilo (18 lb) as the highest average. Reports....Harald Oyen of FishNorway.
