There are many popular varieties of fish that are commonly caught off the shores of Nosara, Costa Rica including Yellowfin Tuna, Black and Blue Marlin, Red Snapper, Sailfish and Dorado aka Mahi Mahi. If you enjoy a fine dining experience with your catch, there is no better place to fish than off the shores of Nosara, Costa Rica. These are the fish that are usually served in the most exclusive restaurants and nothing tastes better than cooking your own freshly caught gourmet verities.

A Rental or a Charter

You may want to simply rent a small boat and head out on your own fishing trip or you might prefer to hire a qualified guide to take you out on a chartered boat to where the best fishing is known to be found. A qualified charter guide will help you make the most of your experience and avoid the pitfalls that an inexperienced person might make fishing for their first time in the ocean waters of Nosara. Understanding things like, not only where the best fishing is, but also how currents and the weather affect the fish is another big advantage to hiring a guided charter.

Using the Right Equipment

Of course, using the right fishing gear for your ocean trip is vital. You will want to have plenty of sunscreen and a good pair (or two) of sunglasses on board to protect yourself. Next, you need the right fishing poles and bait. You need special deep sea fishing gear that will include a heavier weight fishing line that won't break while you reel in your prize winning marlin. Don't worry if you can't get all your fishing gear on the plane with you since there are plenty of little places to rent equipment in town.

A Fishing Vacation

Traveling to Nosara, Costa Rica specifically for a fishing vacation is a great way to escape the everyday pressures of life and truly enjoy some good fishing in a peaceful environment. The views out on the ocean are fantastic since Nosara, Costa Rica is so underdeveloped at this time. It is likely to stay that way for quite some time due to the Ostional Wildlife Refuge that was created to protect the large numbers of olive ridley turtles that nest there. This is also a great place to really stop and appreciate nature in its intended format. The next time you are planning a fishing vacation, you should really consider Nosara, Costa Rica.

Greg Garner was a Peace Corps volunteer in Costa Rica and maintains a home in Nosara Costa Rica and owns a kid rugs store.

Travel Guide For Singles

Discover The Fun, Exciting And Wild World Of Affordable Singles Travel And Start Partying In The Worlds Hottest Party Destinations With The Worlds Most Beautiful And Sexy Singles!

Check it out!

Sport Fishing In Costa Rica - Great Fun Guaranteed

Yes indeed - Costa Rica is home to a variety of sport fishing charters, fishing spots and bay areas that are virtually infested with fish of all kinds besides affording a cost-effective to luxury vacation plan, whatever be your budget and mood! The only dilemma is deciding on what to do, and where to do it.

White Water Rafting

Rafting is an immensely popular activity and good quality water can be found in, or near, many of the most visited Costa Rica vacation destinations.

One of the most convenient bases for a rafting trip is the Quepos/Manuel Antonio area, where the beautiful beaches of the Manuel Antonio National Park make an ideal place to relax after a full day on the water.

There are two main rivers suitable for rafting near to Manuel Antonio, the Savegre and the Naranjo. Both rivers offer rapids between class II to class IV, and so may not be suitable for absolute beginners depending on the season and river conditions.

Tours to both rivers include a road transfer to and from the put-in and take-out points, plus a bi-lingual guide, all safety equipment and personnel, and lunch or snacks after the trip. Rafting trips are generally half-day excursions and include at least two hours on the water itself.

Less intense rafting trips are available close to Costa Rica's capital city of San Jose, on the Pacuare, Sarapiqui, Pejibaye and Reventazon rivers. Here the standards generally range from class I to class III and are suitable for beginners.

As at Manuel Antonio, tours usually last for half a day, but full day or even multi-day excursions can also be arranged.

Rafting tours can be arranged through a Costa Rica vacations package provider, or can be booked at the destination itself. When booking a trip, be sure to choose a reliable outfitter with certified safety and medical qualifications. Confirm in advance the amount of time that will actually be spent on the water and only participate in a rafting trip that is supported by an emergency kayak.

Diving & Snorkeling

Costa Rica's coastal waters offer a varying range of visibility, meaning that divers and snorkelers will need to choose their Costa Rica travel destinations carefully in order to avoid disappointment.

Snorkelers often have a better time on the Caribbean coast due to the warmer waters, the better visibility and the higher abundance of coral reefs. Good places for snorkeling include Cahuita National Park whose reef can only be visited with an official guide, as well as on Puerto Viejo tours to the nearby Manzanillo marine reserve.

For scuba diving, Costa Rica is home to a world-leading, if slightly inaccessible destination, Isla del Coco, several hundred kilometers off the mainland and involving a long boat journey. A trip to Isla del Coco is only recommended for experienced divers who take their sport seriously. For a more relaxed introduction, the beaches along the Nicoya Peninsula - especially at the Gulf of Papagayo -are a good place to start.

It is important to book your diving trip with a reputable and certified operator and non-accredited divers need to take an introductory accompanied dive before undertaking anything more ambitious.

Hiking

Costa Rica is a hiker's paradise with trails and routes through a vast variety of landscapes, from the jungle to the mountains to the coast. With such a choice it's possible to enjoy anything from a one-day solo hike to a multi-day organized trek.

All of Costa Rica's 35 national parks offer well maintained tracks and trails while the larger parks and reserves, including Monteverde and Corcovado also offer opportunities for camping for longer treks. Services inside the parks are generally non-existent so make sure you bring all the food, water and camping equipment that you'll need.

Good destinations for shorter day hikes include the smaller Cahuita National Park on the southern Caribbean coast and the beautiful Manuel Antonio National Park which, although small, offers a huge range of landscapes and environments.

At many popular trekking locations it is possible to hire a local guide, or alternatively consider booking a pre-arranged trekking trip with a Costa Rica tours agency.

Sport Fishing

As with diving and snorkeling, fishing fans need to choose their destination carefully as Costa Rica's various fishing locations are highly varied, depending on which part the coast you are visiting. On the Pacific side, the resort towns of Quepos, Tamarindo and Jaco have the widest range of options with the main draw being marlin, sailfish, yellow fin tuna and barracuda.

Be aware that fish stocks are increasingly depleted, so you may prefer to choose an outfitter that releases some of the catch, although it is common for fishers to take some of their catch back with them and have it freshly prepared in their hotel kitchen.

Most Costa Rica sport fishing tours include transfer to and from the dock, plus snacks and drinks whilst onboard. The larger boats are covered, but you'll be out in the sun for most of the day so remember your sun block and a good sun hat.

Canopy Tours & Ziplining

Finally, one of the most popular (and hair-raising) Costa Rica adventure activities are the famous canopy and zipline tours that are available in many of the country's thick jungles.

Canopy tours are perfect for getting up to the best height for wildlife-spotting, where much of the forest life is hiding. Walkways and suspension bridges are constructed from platform to platform and tours are usually accompanied by professional guides who help you to spot the many creatures that live in this high-altitude world.

The whole experience becomes really thrilling when the ziplines get involved. Many canopy tours involve sailing from tree to tree strapped to a thick steel cable with nothing but thin air between you and the ground, which is often dozens of meters below.

Canopy and zipline tours are available all across Costa Rica, but the longest established and best outfitters can be found in the cloud forests of Monteverde or the volcanic mountains around Arenal Volcano.

These tours are generally very safe and follow stringent safety practices but to be sure, consider booking ahead with a reputable Costa Rica travel agency and only use operators that offer full safety equipment, including helmets, proper harnesses, knee guards and thick gloves.

Tips For Enjoying Your Costa Rica Adventure:

As with any risky activity or extreme sport, it's vital to ensure you have adequate travel insurance before taking part. Medical costs for even minor injuries can become very expensive and insurance is absolutely vital.

Only choose an operator that is recommended and certified and that is clear on what standards of safety are implemented.

To get the best safety standards and quality of service, consider booking ahead before your vacation. Otherwise, talk to other travelers, ask for recommendations in your hotel, and shop around to find the best price and the most reliable outfitter.

This Costa Rica vacations guide to was written by a travel-loving expert at Costa Rica For Less, a member of the Latin America For Less family.

For more impartial travel advice from Latin America For Less' team of on-the-ground experts, visit the Latin America For Less Travel Blog or follow @LatAmForLess on Twitter.

Complete Niche Travel Package! Want to try something a little different, a little more exciting? Then why not consider a quick trip to Costa Rica, where the fishing's fine and the weather is glorious, the seas are calm and the palms sway in the breeze... okay, but you get the picture, right?
You don't have to choose whether you fish in salt water or fresh when it comes to Costa Rica, because you can do both! Do you want to fish the Caribbean or the Pacific side of the country? Sandwiched between the base of Mexico and the tip of South America, fishers who come to this fascinating country can do both. That goes for ocean fishing on a rolling deck or fishing on the banks of a wide stream that ribbons through jungle terrain and over waterfalls and lagoons that will beckon to the novice and experienced fisher alike.
Costa Rica offers a wealth of fish for just about every fisherman, including rainbow bass, trout and mullet, as well as marlin, wahoos and tuna. It doesn't matter where you decide to fish, for you're bound to catch something. Even if you throw the fish back, visitors enjoy white, sandy beaches, warm winds and sunshine that never quits as an added bonus to their fishing adventures. From Drake Bay to the Gulf of Papagayo, Costa Rican waters delight not only local fishermen, but also anglers from around the world who venture south to test Latin waters. Coves, caves and lagoons offer a wide variety of fresh water fish as well, including snapper and roosterfish.
Fishing vacations in Costa Rica can be arranged for large groups, small groups, individuals or couples. Combining activities will give visitors to this tiny country the most bang for their buck, and can include hiking, volcano exploring, fishing, surfing, canoeing, horseback riding and even 4-wheeling. Visiting both coastlines of the country is a snap, as the country from one side to the other can be reached in about six hours driving time. Many people don't realize how beautiful or unique Costa Rica is, filled as it is with history, famous landmarks and friendly people. Fishing is not the only great thing about this Latin country, which offers something to delight every age group. Nightlife in San José offers dancing and other entertainments to keep the young crowd busy, while theaters, museums and other venues cater to other travelers.
Taking a fishing trip to Costa Rica is great fun in and of itself, but why not take advantage and thoroughly explore the country when you have the opportunity? Whether you want to drive yourself or take a prearranged tour, travel agents based both in Costa Rica and around the world will be able to set you up. So get those fishing poles out and get ready to have the time of your life, fishing and exploring the waters and sights of one of the most captivating countries in the world.
This list is by no means comprehensive or complete, it is just a checklist of all the places I would visit when I go to Costa Rica.

Arenal Volcano

The Arenal Volcano area is one of Costa Rica's top attractions. Only 3 hours away from San Jos, in the town of La Fortuna, stands a majestic 1,633m volcano, known to be one of the most active in the world. Despite its constant activity, the volcano is very safe to visit as long as you stay within the safety perimeter. In this area take advantage of the pristine natural surroundings! Go fishing, horseback riding; take a canopy tour, rafting or experience a tremendous canyon expedition. Whatever you decide, be sure to visit the relaxing hot springs in the area, the most famous being Tabacon and Baldi.

La Fortuna and Surroundings

Often simply referred to as La Fortuna, the town of La Fortuna de San Carlos is the gateway to the magnificent Arenal Volcano. A charming and quiet town, La Fortuna is easily accessible from the capital city San Jose, and offers some panoramic views of the spectacular Arenal, Costa's Rica's most active volcano. Sitting around 10 kilometers away from town and regularly spewing smoke and ash for some time now, the Volcan Arenal is the country's top rated tourist attraction and is indeed a sight to behold.

Over the last few years in particular, La Fortuna has become quite a bustling town. However, there are plenty of accommodations, hotels and resorts here to suit every budget. A must try when in La Fortuna are the amazing resort spas surrounding the volcano. On a clear day you can watch the volcano erupt and if you wait for nightfall, the Arenal puts on a brilliant show with bright red rocks tumbling down its sides. Beside the volcano, this town has other great tourist attractions like the La Catarata de la Fortuna, Tabacon Hot Springs, white water rafting, hiking excursions, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, horseback riding, canopy tours and Cao Negro Boat Tours are just some of the many activities that one can enjoy while you are here.

Monteverde Cloud Forest

Most famous for being associated with the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, the tiny community of Monteverde is a small village located near the entrance of the cloud forest. Monteverde was founded by the Quaker community that migrated from North America to Costa Rica in the 1950's. In town, which is actually Santa Elena, you'll find banks, drug store, a local hospital, book store, gas station, ATM machine, police station, post office, supermarkets, internet cafes, restaurants

As the weather here is quite chilly and misty, due to the village being high up in the Tilaran Mountain Range, you should bring some thick clothes and a light jacket to stay warm. When here, do remember to try out the delicious local cheeses, which are a treat to eat. If you are a bird watcher, this village offers some lovely bird watching opportunities, even though you are not in the cloud forest itself. However, if you prefer to do the more touristy thing, visit the local craft centers, the women's co-op center, the butterfly garden and the Hummingbird Gallery in town.

Dominical Beach

Located on Costa Rica's amazingly beautiful Central Pacific coastline, the small village of Dominical is a surfer's paradise where waves can reach over 10 feet high, a place rich in island biodiversity and amazing underwater flora and fauna. It is the perfect combination between the extensive golden coasts full of scenic beaches & luscious mountains.

Dominical is a 4 km long beach strip, with a few hotels, lodges, resorts and restaurants in the area. While swimming here is near impossible with the strong swells and rip tides, one can kayak off the coast or enjoy some diving or snorkeling opportunities in the area. Horseback tours can also be arranged to the nearby Nauyaca Waterfalls, or one can visit the Marino Ballena National Park, which is home to a number of marine mammals like turtles and whales that come here seasonally to mate and nest. If you like, you can take a short day trip to the lovely Cao Island just off the coast. This island is considered one of the best adventure diving spots in the world and is home to an impressive array of underwater marine life.

Tortuguero

Tortuguero National Park is one of Costa Rica's most biologically diverse wildlife areas. Featuring one of the most verdant landscapes in the country, the 26,156 hectare park was created with the main purpose of protecting the green sea turtle nesting area. Tortuguero owes its very wet tropical forest to the 5000 to 6000 millimeters of rain it receives per year. These climatic conditions are favorable to more than 400 tree species, around 2200 species of other plants and more than 400 birds, 60 amphibian and 30 fresh water fish species, as well as several endangered animals including tapirs, monkeys, ocelots, jaguars, manatees and sloths. Tortuguero is characterized by beautifully scenic canals, lagoons and rivers that may be toured by boat, canoe or kayak. In addition to the green turtle, three other sea turtle species nest on the park's beaches.

Malpais

Malpais is situated on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. Also known as the Hawaii of Latin America, there are several beaches to swim, dive or snorkel though it's main attraction is it's unique conditions for surfing and it's pristine subtropical nature. Horseback riding, sportfishing, canopy tours, scuba, and nature tours make up some of the other popular activities nearby. It is just a dream come true for them. Costa Rica's Pacific ports and several beach resorts feature the best deep sea fishing in this side of the world. Remarkably, the northern Atlantic coast rivers offer another world-class snook and tarpon type of fishing.

Bill fishes are probably Costa Rica's biggest attractions. With sailfish and marlin at the heart of the Pacific coast, it has been a favorite of first time fishermen tourists. The blue waters of the Costa Rican Pacific coast also hold a sizeable amount of dorado and many species of tuna. Furthermore, they as well found plenty of other feisty fighters such as roosterfish and wahoo. Those anglers spending the time fishing around the large rocks on the coast of Manuel Antonio and Quepos will probably find 60-pound roosters and other magnificent fighters. In addition, dogtooth snapper lurk just waiting for a battle with one of many reef dwellers inhabiting this same areas.

Deep sea fishing is the pride of Costa Rica. But there's great fresh water fishing in parts of Lake Arenal and the larger rivers in the Northern Atlantic Zone. In this type of fishing, anglers must handle the small yet ornery guapote. Guapote is a hump-backed fish known too as the rainbow bass. There are giant marlins, sailfishes, high jumping tarpons, and more hard hitting fresh water species abound the area.

Costa Rica fishing is probably the best in this side of the world as it offers a wide variety of fishes. Aside from good old fishing, the country offers a warm and hospitable culture with an opportunity to see all the attractions in a limited time due to the small size of the nation. One can enjoy it all on a single vacation. Perhaps one can also explore a day of water rafting or the infamous rainforest jungle tour at the side.

There are also dolphins to see. Fishes include giant yellow fin tuna, cubera, wahoo, a variety of snapper, rooster fish, grouper, rainbow runners, blue runners, snook and many more species. What is more amazing with Costa Rica boat operators is that they release all bill fishes which were not record contenders. This somehow assures us all that we can still return to this place in the near future without the fear of losing such a beautiful resource of exotic fishes while protecting the balance of the environment.

Check out Costa Rica Travel Deals, the best source of information on Costa Rica attractions, budget travel tips, activities, travel planning, fishing, honeymoon, airfare discounts, and travel tips.

For details on getting the adventure of your life, follow the traveler's blog in the Costa Rica Trips Blog.

Through The Eyes of a Traveler

eBooks on Mind Travel

Check it out!

Costa Rica Fishing Report - What is Fishing in Costa Rica Really Like?

Here is a quick Costa Rica fishing report to help you learn more about fishing in this incredible location, and encourage you to stop putting it off and just do it.

As you might expect with a place like Costa Rica, with it's warm weather and close proximity to the ocean, it's a fisherman's paradise. Regardless of what kind of fish you want to go after, you can find it in Costa Rica.

Rather than give you a long list of details about the fish that are here (just about any kind of variety you can imagine)and all the other rehashed information you can get everyplace, I'm going to assume you already know this stuff, and I will tell you some ways to save money on your trip.

First of all, at least when it comes to your flight, try and use credit cards with rewards points that go towards airlines prices, and assuming you don't spend more than you ordinarily would, you are essentially getting your ticket for either much less, or for free, just by going about your daily life.

Most people don't realize the opportunities that cash back credit cards offer, but if you have the credit rating to get them, I'd highly recommend it.

To save money on your airline ticket, I'd advocate you purchase your plane ticket just before you leave, and try to leave between Tuesday and Thursday, which re the airlines least busy days, and the ones they are most desperate to fill seats on.

Now that you know how to save money on your trip, here are the best Costa Rica fishing spots in Costa Rica to focus your search on. First of all, Coronado national park, Pueto Himinez, and Playa Niuessa Eco lodge are some of the places you should focus on, as they offer the most fish.

You might pay a premium to go to these popular locations, but I'm guessing that you want to catch fish, so in order to do so, you need to pay a bit more, but if you follow the previous tips, you shouldn't break the bank.

Regardless of which you decide on, I'd recommend you take out a fishing guide who can take you right to the hottest spots in these already hot areas, and you will enjoy much more success this way. Need to Get Away and Relax? I Have Just the Remedy - A Costa Rica Vacation

Here are 10 terrific reasons to take a Costa Rica vacation now.

1. You'll find great airfares and travel bargains to this lovely country right now. Many hotels and resorts are offering discount, off-season rates.

2. There are nearly 800 miles of pristine coastline with hundreds of great Costa Rica beaches. These are uncrowded beaches on both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts. In fact, you might be the only one on most of the beaches right now.

3. Are you an ecotourist? Costa Rica has more species of butterflies than the entire African continent including the only butterfly in the world that makes a sound. Not to mention almost as many different species of birds as on the entire continent of Europe or in all of the continental United States. But, don't leave your camera or backpack unattended at fabulous Manuel Antonio Park because the monkeys steal everything they can get their hands on.

4. Costa Rica boasts a park on its Osa Peninsula which National Geograpic calls the most biologically intense place on the planet. On its northern end you can fish off Drake Bay, named after Sir Francis Drake, the famous English sea captain who landed there just a few years before he saved England and defeated the mighty Spanish Armada.

The park's actually quite tiny but filled with an extraordinary array of animals and plants.

In fact, tiny Costa Rica has nearly one-fifth of all the species of plants and animals in the world. Imagine that in a country that takes up only 1/10,000 of the planet's surface!

5. Visit mighty Irazu. This volcano saluted John F. Kennedy by erupting on the day he visited Costa Rica in 1963. You can drive to its summit where, on a clear day, you can see the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean at the same place.

Or go to Arenal Volcano, one of Costa Rica's Seven Wonders, and luxuriate in magnificent hot springs, drink in hand, while the volcano's crater spits out glowing lava far into the night sky.

6. Thousands of Americans travel to Costa Rica for cosmetic surgery, dental, or other medical care because the quality of care is world-class but often only about a one-third of the price in the States. Take a tropical vacation, get some great and inexpensive medical or dental care, and return home with some of your hard-earned money.

7. Some folks come to take Spanish lessons in schools that also teach them how to surf! Or yoga. Or sexy latin dancing. Or all of the above. You'll find that learning a language was never this much fun.

8. The temperatures are fantastic year-round. You can swim every day and cool off in the nearby mountains. Think about taking a hot-air balloon in the face of magnificent volcanoes.

9. I like to fish. Do you? Want to actually catch a fish? Some of the best ocean fishing in the world is available every day of the year. Imagine catching lots of huge tarpon or trying your hand on the mighty marlin (I hooked a 450 pound, 13 marlin recently). Remember: catch and release is the rule here. Folks here take their Costa Rica fishing seriously.

10. You will be just a short trip away from a place where there is a stable democracy. Costa Rica abolished its army more than 70 years ago and you will find lots of friendly, smiling courteous people who really like Americans and Europeans.

About the writer: Vic Krumm lives in sunny Costa Rica. Costa Rica is bordered by the Pacific on the West and the Caribbean on the East. There are too many rivers to count flowing in between. If you prefer to fish lakes, there are freshwater lakes of all sizes within the borders and even creating the border with Nicaragua. There are also canals, mangroves, and estuaries, in additional to offshore islands.

This abundance and variety of fishing venues has led to several game fish records being set in the relatively small country. Costa Rica currently holds 89 International Game Fish Association records including a 162 pound blue marlin, and a sailfish caught on the fly.

It is not just the abundance of fish that should make an angler choose Costa Rica, it is also the country's eye towards game fish conservation. Circle hooks have long been required and the Costa Rican government, working with the Billfish Foundation has recently enacted new rules for both sports fishermen and commercial fishermen aimed at reducing the number of billfish killed as a result of long lining and poor fishing practices.

Whether you want to fish in the Pacific, the Caribbean, both, or somewhere in between, you will have no trouble finding the perfect fishing lodge or day charter.

The Caribbean coast, is the place for unparalleled world class tarpon fishing. This side of the country can be more remote than the Pacific. Here, you can find all inclusive lodges that include lodging, meals and fishing for tarpon, snook, snapper, and guapote.

Up and down the Pacific coast you will find everything from fishing villages, to beach resort towns, to world class marinas, to middle of nowhere lodges. When choosing to fish in the Pacific you need to do a little research. Although marlin, sailfish, snapper, tuna, dorado, amberjack, wahoo, roosterfish and snook are all common catches, the season for each fish varies depending on your location in Costa Rica.

It is not just the fishing seasons that vary the atmosphere in different locations can be completely different as well. In the north the beaches are popular, the condos are tall, and the wind makes the fishing season a bit shorter than further south. In Herradura, the Marina is world class, you can golf, the fishing is incredible three hundred days a year, but you might miss some of the Costa Rican experience. In Quepos, the fleet is large and experienced, the fishing is great nearly year round, and you can visit Costa Rica's most popular National Park, Manuel Antonio. Further south on the Osa Peninsula you will find Golfito and Puerto Jimenez. The fishing is great year round depending on the species you are after, the locations are remote and you get to experience the natural beauty of Costa Rica.

Before you come to Costa Rica you need to decide what type of angler and what type of traveler you are. Are you coming for relaxation or do you want a place with night life? Do you like to feel like you have never left home or do you want to experience Costa Rican life and culture? Do you want luxury or economy? Are you just coming to fish or do you want to participate in other adventure activities? Are you traveling with your family, with your wife, or with a group of guys? Your answer to these questions will effect where you want to fish. What you want to catch and where you want to fish may effect when you want to fish.

Rest assured that you will have a great time fishing in Costa Rica. The fishing is world class due not only to the great number and variety of big fish, but also due to the number of days you can fish per year, the quality of the country's conservation programs, the quality of the boats to be chartered and the experience and professionalism of the captains and crews.

Marshall a project manager and avid sportsfishermen from Texas, lives in Quepos, Costa Rica with his wife and 2 children. Together, they run Quepos Adventures a fishing charter and adventure vacation booking company.

Travel Blog Success - eCourse

A membership site that teaches travelers how to build, optimize, and monetize a travel blog. You're choosing one of the best tourist destinations in the world. Costa Rica has been called the Hawaii of Central America. A Costa Rica vacation is full of beauty, lush foliage, many wildlife surprises, incredible lakes, rivers, and waterfalls.

Activities on a Costa Rica vacation include bird and butterfly watching, surfing, deep sea fishing, scuba diving, tree top (canopy) tours, four wheeling, snorkeling, shopping, hiking, river rafting, horse back riding and casinos. On a Costa Rica vacation you'll find pristine beaches, tropical jungles, clear blue skies, high mountain rain forest, and tropical sun. That's why Costa Rica was aptly named 'rich coast' by Christopher Columbus in 1502.

Nature is Costa Rica's green card. Wildlife diversity and exceptional landscapes merge in a long list of untouched lands and protected areas that will get you involved in as many Costa Rica expedition activities and adventure sports as you can imagine.

Costa Rica is unusually blessed by the diversity of its butterflies. There exists about 20,000 butterfly species worldwide. Of these, about 1,000 or 5% can be found in Costa Rica.

With more than 850 species of birds, all found within a tight geographic area, Costa Rica offers birders of all levels of expertise an unrivaled bird watching experience. Birders out on the trail in Costa Rica's forests should keep an eye out for mixed flocks foraging on certain types of food, especially fruit, in the forest canopy.

Costa Rica is home to roughly 150 species of amphibians, some of which are extremely colorful and exotic. There are tree frogs, which spend their entire lives above the forest floor, breeding in the water of tank bromeliads or in holes in the trunks of trees. Others, like the poison-arrow frog, are exuberantly colored, ranging from bright red with blue or green legs to bright green with black markings. There are over 200 species of reptiles in Costa Rica. The 14 turtle species include both marine and freshwater varieties. The largest of the marine turtles are leatherbacks. Their shells are up to 5 feet and they weigh upwards of 800 pounds! Marine turtles climb up sandy beaches to lay their eggs, a spectacular sight because it happens en masse.

Costa Rica is home to over 9,000 identified species of vascular plants, including over 900 different species of trees. Costa Rica is home to some 1,500 species of orchids. From sub-alpine dwarf vegetation, rainforest flora from sea level to mangrove swamps and seasonal dry forest with its deciduous trees, there is an astounding range of floral habitats for a country so small.

The protection of Costa Rica's natural heritage is managed by the respective national parks and reserves. These areas protect many species of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, fresh and salt-water fish, and a vast number of identified vascular plants-representing 4% of the world's total floral and faunal species.

In addition, these management groups protect examples of almost all the existing natural habitats such as deciduous forests, mangrove swamps, rain forests, herbaceous swamps, cloud forests, paramos, hilillo forests and marshlands. They also protect areas of historical and archaeological interest, such as pre-Columbian settlements and early battlefields, as well as beautiful areas of scenic interest, such as beaches, valleys and waterfalls. But above all, the areas of particular interest to the conservationist are the zones which protect the last remaining examples of Central American dry forest and the beaches where the sea turtles nest.

The protection of Costa Rica's natural resources has implications beyond its borders because they encompass an incredible biodiversity, including numerous species on the verge of extinction. All of this is the reason the country has become one of the most popular destinations for visiting ecologists and biologists. On the whole, access to these areas and facilities are freely available provided the visitor respects the need to protect them. These protected areas are ideal for hiking and rafting, for watching the birds and other wildlife, for camping and just for enjoying in general, their rivers, beaches, jungles, mountain forests, volcanoes as well as their historic and archaeological sites.

A Costa Rica vacation is fast becoming the #1 romantic honeymoon and family vacation destination in the world.
