I last fished fished the Uruguay River Exclusive Tail Waters beneath the dam of Salto Grande reservoir located at the Argentina-Uruguay border in 2011. Man I miss that place! But my fishing partner and good friend, Gary C., has returned numerous times since that 2011 first trip. In fact, he will very quickly tell you that LaZona has become his very favorite fishing destination. PERIOD!

In the next few minutes you will see why Gary can't get enough of:

Over the last few years I have heard some pretty incredible stories from Gary about this destination and the fresh water dynamo - the Golden Dorado – that reside in this river. After having been there myself and immersed in the challenge, I can verify that these astonishing accounts about the monster Dorados of LaZona were not simply “fish stories” but were absolutely genuine.

I use the word dynamo here because it has in its meaning…hard-working and tirelessly energetic. That describes what the locals call “The River Tiger” quite well…with razor sharp teeth and bone hard jaws, this golden torpedo often engages in leaping aerial displays 4-7 times, or more, per hook up. No other destination in the world offers such Giants of the Golden Dorado like this Exclusive Tail Waters below the Salto Grande Dam. The fishery is rigorously restricted, controlled, managed and maintained. Government concessions are contracted annually for The Zone.

Remember, these Salminus brasiliensis live in fast and highly turbulent waters. They are 10x strong because of it and they never let up after hook up. If you can manage to keep them “hooked up,” you’re in for a exhaustive tango with one of the hardest working and most tirelessly energetic freshwater game fish on the planet today! They will wear you out and take even the most “veteran” angler to the mat on more than several occasions. Until you become familiar with The River Tiger’s “game” you will find success rare in bringing the Golden Dynamo to the landing cradle.

Tuesday - 5/8/2018 - Trip Summary

Gary: Don finished with several 30-40 pounders and then a 46, 47 and a 48 pounder!!! The fish here are getting bigger! AND we caught fewer small fish than ever before!!! Very few under 24#! You see the results. GIANTS. Amazing!!!

Gary: My final tally: 30, 32, 32, 36,36,38,40,40,42,48,50,50,50 and PB 52 pounder!!! Unbelievable trip! I have now been to Fisherman Heaven!

Looking for the fishing adventure of a lifetime? This one sits right at the top. Think of it this way. In approximately one square mile over 20 world records of various classes have been taken for this species including the IGFA All Tackle World Record caught by Andrea L.S. de Bolto on 1/11/2006. It weighed in officially at 25.28 Kg (55# 1oz.) Many other River Tigers are reported to have been caught over 56# and up through 60 plus pounds but have not been officially weighed, submitted and certified. I'm sure the reports are mostly correct.

The Redfish Rumble Begins in the Delta!

This fishing the Americas Report just in from

Two day Fishing Report (July 17-18) from Venice, Louisiana. Ideal fishing conditions prevail with light winds with scattered showers. Overcast skies provided very comfortable fishing for mid July. The early morning bite was exceptional - basically on every cast. We fished under pelicans diving on bait fish. The Big Bull Redfish are moving in and setting up in their usual locations on 3 to 4 foot mud flats on the east side of the river. Due to high river flow this spring and early summer the Bull Redfish did not set up per their normal routine until early/mid July. Normally the Redfish would be setting up on the beaches and mud flats in early May and June. We experienced a number of very disappointing trips early spring and summer but things have turned around in a dramatic fashion in the past two weeks! Bull Redfish should continue to flood onto the mud flats off of the Mississippi Delta for the remainder of the summer and into the fall. I expect exceptional catches from now through November. __Captain Keith

Realistically, Spybaiting a.k.a the technique of "Silent Capture" is still in its infancy.

Perhaps not so much within the green and brown bass communities, although there is still volumes to learn there as well, but certainly when considering other species. So for all you Spybaiting enthusiasts don't shout me down before you hear me out!

There are applications awaiting to be developed with the Silent Capture finesse technique in both freshwater and saltwater. Pioneers of this technique, like David Swendseid, are bringing to the forefront professional and engaging instruction via fast paced yet detailed and informative video presentations.

For we gray-tones and old school deep water hounds it is reminiscent of our days learning and then refining the technique of "Spoonplugging" with instructions from pioneers and legends like E. L. "Buck" Perry. Or, Carl Lowrance, who we remember in 1959 began full production of the first mass produced recreational fish finder...the Fish Lo-K-Tor or more commonly called, "The Little Green Box." That "little green box," as the Fish Lo-K-Tor became known, soon revolutionized sports fishing across all waters of the globe.

My point: "Pioneers" delivering technique and tool are always, on mission. So today we have a relatively new technique with new educators like Swendseid and new creators...artisans like Masahiro Adachi developing and perfecting tools like the Realis Spinbait 80 and 90 or the Realis Spinbait 80 G-Fix.

This grey-tone for one is just as excited today to learn the technique of Silent Capture as I was 50 years ago learning to understand the blips and blinks of stumps and contour changes on the dial on my first Lowrance.

A few weeks ago at ICAST16 as day number one was drawing to a close I happened to stop near a booth to catch my breath and decide if I was going to call it a day or press on with a couple more quick contacts. While standing in the isle this very energetc guy walks up and says, "Watca lookin' at." I said nothing particular at the present just trying to figure my next move. He said, "while you're figuring why don't you step over here and have a look." So I did. Along with my friend and fishing partner Gary, we stepped into the MONSTER3XUSA booth and began talking with Raul Prieto. Can you recall a time(s) when you just happened to be (stop) at the right place at the right time?

Raul very confidently began to present his product as matter of fact the best product of its kind out there. I'm sure others have their own ideas about that but I respect someone greatly who can passionately yet professionally articulate the particulars of their wares. Raul was good, real good. Then as I learned, he had a product I had heard about in Brazil but just hadn't run accross in the US. (More about that in another post) I can tell you this much, we are already testing them for ourselves on Monster Redfish, and as you will see, they work really well, and in November we'll be taking a bunch to Brazil for Peacocks and probably a bunch more to Uruguay in 2017, for Golden Dorado. Enough, more about that later . . .

Here's Gary's Fishing and Test Report:

Well, there are good trips, and then there are terrific trips. This latest trip with Captain Keith was one of the terrific varieties, and the last day is of what redfishing dreams are made!  Just ask my great friends, Jeff Stagg and Don Cutter who accompanied me this time.

For the first two days, we put 41 total bull reds in the boat, which is certainly not bad. On the third day however, while the clicker showed an official count of 42, we all felt that many more were missed during all the triple hookups with resultingexcitement, confusion, overlapped lines, and other headaches in general!  For approximately 2 hours, we had a redfish on every single cast! It was that good!

Most all of these beautiful redfish were 20 pounds each or better with the biggest weighing in at 31. As to lures, they were very specific.  As you all know, many times it just doesn't seem to matter what lure one throws. This was one of those times when it really did matter. They definitely preferred 6" plastic shad bodies or

the new 7" Monster 3X---big lures under a popping cork. Any color worked as long as it was black and chartreuse!!! The new Monster lure is made
by Brazilians that I met at ICAST from a plastic they developed that is the most durable I have ever seen! They say you can stretch it the length of your arm (I didn't try), but I did see that multiple redfish had no effect on it whatsoever. It takes some effort to get it on the hook, but when you do, it sticks like glue (without any)!

I continue to say that Captain Keith's 3 day all-inclusive package is the best deal in all of sportfishing, and nothing whatsoever has caused me to change my mind. This was my old friend, Don Cutter's first trip there, and he told me time and time again that it more than lived up to all I have ever said about it.
The Captain has very limited space available yet this year, so I hope you will contact him as soon as possible about filling it, or booking something early for next year.

I remember reading the historical stories about the mountain men of the early1800’s and their annual Rendezvous in the Wind River Mountains region of the Rocky Mountains. How the sage and salty men of the trade blankets would go to great extremes, enduring all kinds of hardships and many demanding days of travel endurance, just to reach Rendezvous. Then finally arriving to a convention of like minded individuals set on their itinerary for the days ahead. Days of buying, selling, trading, demonstrating their wares; networking and surely, celebrating. Celebrating new and old endeared friendships and the achievements of the Best of the Best!

Sound familiar? If you are an annual ICAST attendee it should.

Interesting Tidbit: One of the favorite trade items between the Mountain Man and the Native American was bone fish hooks.

July 12-15: ICAST Rendezvous2016 Orlando County Convention Center, Orlando Florida and the International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades, better know as ICAST. Produced by the American Sportfishing Association (ASA), the sportfishing industry’s annual trade show Rendezvoused for its 59th year.

Over 15,000 industries representatives from the global sportfishing industry gathered to witness the latest innovations in gear, accessories and apparel encompassing the 650,000 gross square foot show which included displays developed by over 700 businesses.
For the forth year, the American Fly Fishing Trade Association (AFFTA) incorporated their International Fly Tackle Dealer show (IFTD) under the canopy of the Convention Center to offer the fishing industry representatives a chance to “see it all under one roof.”

These “united trade shows” are the perfect venue for launching new fishing products and sparking new trends in the growing recreational fishing industry.
The 2016 show added yet another allied attraction to the venue with the opening of the Marine Accessories Pavilion, hosted by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) thus, expanding the shows appeal to a wider cross-section of industry buyers.
Annually, the single most important feature of the ICAST show for exhibitors and attendees alike is the New Product Showcase. The New Product Showcase embodies the sportfishing industry’s innovative and entrepreneurial spirit and rewards that ingenuity through the “Best of Show” new product awards competition.

This year, more than 1,000 tackle products and accessories were entered by more than 240 companies into 24 “Best of Show” categories in the New Product Showcase, all competing for the overall ICAST 2016 “Best of Show” award.

Making up a special section of the 650,000 gross square foot show floor, the ICAST New Product Showcase, the Highlight of the Show, provided special visibility for the industry’s latest innovations in gear, apparel and accessories.

You may find a complete list of the 2016 Best of Show Award winners immediately below this article with direct links to the products but now let me give you my ten takeaways from the 2016 show.

Number 10: The ICAST show at 650,000 square feet is enormous. I spent three full days, granted some time was spent in meetings, and I know I missed out on something new. I really think at this size and certainly with any further growth a four day show is in order.

Number 9: Cobra Garage Door Storage - Whoever thunk this one up earns a special gold star! Best of Show in tackle management. I’ve looked at the back of garage doors for years and missed the potential of this application altogether. Brilliant! A place to store, paddles, push poles, gaffs, rods, and so much more out of the way. More space is always good! Check it out.

Number 8: Apparel - In a word abundance? If you need to wear it you could find it. From belts to buffs and head wear to foot wear. From technical to trendy and all in between. Salt life styles to fly life styles. Bright to conservative colors and safety wear to temperature controlled. But to boil it all down to who’s Hot and who’s not and who trips this trigger for 2017, its gotta’ be HUK Performance Fishing! Truly offering a fresh take on the fishing world as well as offering styles that are indeed young and current, but still appeals to this ole’ fossil!

Number 7: Destination Travel - How does a great adventure fishing destination make it into a sportfishing tackle show? Number 1: I gotta say, at least for me, that the most encouraging observation of the 2016 ICAST Show was this: The industry is fully supportive and absolutely behind our youth in fishing and in introducing this generation to the industry. I have never seen, in my 15 years attending ICAST, the level of interest for our youth so apparent from industry people, angling icons, companies and professional fishermen and fisherwomen as I saw in July. I began noticing this about four years ago but this year was stunning. Countless times I watched industry insiders and company personnel alike drop their intense ‘one on one’ conversations, perhaps even with clients, to address a question from a young angler or an aspiring high school or college fishing team member. Congratulations fishing industry . . . for dropping everything else to both invest and indulge yourselves into these young people. They are your ICAST peers of the future. Well done!

Let’s all remember to take a kid fishing and introduce them to the great outdoors!

Annual Redfish Rendezvous at Venice Camp with friends Gary Clark, Jeff Stagg, Captain Keith Kennedy and Lulu.

If I asked you to look back to the June 2015 report for this same trip (actually only a few posts back) you would quickly draw two conclusions:

1. This less than semi part time blogger has all but abandoned blogging over the past year (we're going to correct that going forward) and,

2. The similarity of this current report to the June 2015 report.

It's true, fishing and catching was much the same. Numbers were down a bit this year due primarily to local weather systems curtailing our time on the water. Other than that, all things considered, a trip to Captain Keith Kennedy's Camp is always a highlight to the summer fishing season. Great food, great friendships and usually great fishing are the staples of Born To Fish Charters with Captain Keith.

Here's Gary's report:

"Just returned from another great redfishing trip with Capt. Keith Kennedy of Born to Fish Charters in Boothville, LA. Fished for 3 days with good friends, Jeff Stagg and David Fields. First day was simply outstanding with 53 bull reds over the side of the boat. Most were 20 pounds or more and Jeff had the day's biggest at 31 pounds.

The next 2 days we dodged storms but managed to put an additional 25 in the boat, topped by David's beautiful 36 pounder. Top two baits were clearly the El Grande saltwater fluke Boom-r-Ang in Foxy Freddie color and the large Bomber Mud Minnow in black/chartreuse tail. Redfish are in their summer pattern and when you get on a school you can drift for miles catching one right after another. The Captain has had some unusual cancellations due to illnesses and our friends can grab a trip by calling him as soon as possible."

But every once in a while one pops in your in box and it's the Real Deal! The following is one of those Real Deal Reports from Captain Keith Kennedy.

A Glorious Two Days For Sure!

Day One . . . Unbelievable Day of Red Fish Fishing!

"FISHING NEWS..... Today can only be described as a, " unbelievable day of fishing ", A Glorious Day For Sure..... Fished with four fellows from the great state of Georgia..... We started fishing at 7am and stopped fishing at 1pm, six hours total..... In six hours they boated #130 Bull Reds, average weight 20 lbs. ..... Total fish weight range was between 16 lbs. and 31 lbs..... I'll do the math for you..... This equals one fish landed every three minutes..... Previous record was # 109 fish in 2010..... "

"2nd day total was 108, for a two day total of # 238 !

The Outstanding Redfish Action Continues around the Delta!

What else can I say? But these last several reports so clearly describe the fishing in the Delta area this summer. Perhaps the best is the old school saying’, “When it’s Hot . . . it’s Hot!” Whether it’s the weather or the Redfish bite . . . the time is right!

Mike Loyd, George Burns and friends fished with Captain Keith Kennedy, Born to Fish Charters last week and report they had another great trip with The Captain!

Excellent Delta Redfish Action Continues!

Just returned from another great trip to the Delta with angling friends Gary Clark and Jeff Stagg. Among other trips for each of us, these late June dates when we meet up at Camp are our favorites. Seasonal conditions are usually about as optimal as possible the last week of June. This trip proved to be no different except for the unusual local weather pattern that presented itself on day two. But hey, we take the good with the "other" and are blessed to enjoy this incredible fishery. Gary's report below describes our three days fishing with our friend, Captain Keith Kennedy who operates Born to Fish Charters out of Venice, LA.

Here's his report:

"Boy, was it hard to believe the marine forecast for the first day of our latest trip to Louisiana to fish with Captain Keith Kennedy of Born to Fish Charters. Waves of 0 to 1 foot, which is simply unheard of! But, sure enough, that's precisely what met us when the Captain reached the spot he wanted to fish. Within moments, everybody was hooked up to a big redfish all going in different directions! For the next several hours, to have triple and quadruple hookups, all it took was having that many baits in the water. When the dust settled---or rather, the water calmed from all the action---45 bull redfish to 28 pounds (Jeff Stagg) had come over the rail.

As always, with that kind of fishing on the first day, you just can't wait for the second day. Then, as so often happens, what a difference a day made. Trying his best to put us into fish early, the Captain made our way all the way down to the Head of the Passes on the River. At that point, storms on both sides of us made it very clear that the prudent course of action was to return to camp, and that's precisely what we did.

Late morning we headed out again, but the second day's fishing was nothing like the first day. We fished really hard for a total of two bull reds!

Then came the finale! On the third day, we returned to the original scene of the crime, and it was game on all over again! Another storm caused us to seek shelter, but after it passed, the Captain made the right decision to return to where all the action had been, and sure enough, doubles and triples were on again! We finished the last day with a total of 40 redfish, and David Fields nailed the big one of the trip at 34 pounds (pic attached). I managed a nice red with more spots on both sides than I have ever seen.

Before I reveal the best lures for this outing, let me just say that this latest trip exemplifies why it's so good to book Capt. Keith's 3 day, 4 night all-inclusive package. Booking only 1 or 2 days can be very hit or miss. With 3 days of fishing, it's usually for sure that at least one of those days the weather and the fish will cooperate. It's not uncommon for 2 days to be good, and if you get all 3 to be good, you can consider yourself to be very fortunate.

Now for the lures. As has been so often the case, the El Grande "Boom-R-Ang" saltwater fluke bait in Foxy Fred color was just exceptional. (See FYI below) Bomber mudminnows in white with chartreuse tail also did their thing. A new wrinkle developed by the Captain calls for two H & H queen cocahoe minnows to be arrayed on the same 8/0 circle hook, and this produced quite well. Jeff Stagg upped the ante on this rig by replacing the minnows with two 6 inch twister tail grubs. On the last day, all he had to do for an immediate hookup was to get this rig close to the water! And I must mention that the Captain caught a very nice bull red, field testing his new lure creation, the Rag Tag. No doubt you will be hearing big things to come of this innovation!

As always, I hope all our fishing buddies can enjoy this fantastic fishing with the Captain for about 1/5 the cost of our international travel! Bass wishes, Gary Clark"

Redfish Action Heating Up in the LA Delta Region

As the Gulf Coast temperatures heat up around the Delta area so does the action for Bull Redfish. Fishing out of Venice, LA, avid Redfish angler Dr. Gary Clark and friends report excellent results for three days of fishing this past week. The three anglers landed 84 Bull Reds over three days fishing with the largest weighing in at 34 1/2 pounds. Clark reports most fish were taken with soft plastics fished under a popping cork with two specific baits. Fishing the Americas reports: Fall Bull Redfish BITE is ON!

It appears that the typical Fall Bull Redfish Feeding Frenzy around the Louisiana Delta is ramping up. Latest report after fishing with Captain Keith Kennedy is just in from Dr. Gary Clark.

Gary has just returned from Venice after fishing this past Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and writes:

"Last October, my two cousins, Joe and Lynn Payne joined me in Louisiana for their first redfish trip ever. Naturally, it was with Captain Keith Kennedy of Born to Fish Charters, and we did so well that a return visit this year was in order. That 3 day trip has just been completed and it was pretty spectacular, especially the second day when 62 bull reds to 32 pounds made it over the side of Captain Keith's boat. As some of you know, the Captain can get a little grouchy when, despite all of his best efforts, the redfish simply refuse to cooperate. Fortunately, his mood---and ours---was decidedly upbeat as a total of 101 redfish averaging about 20 pounds each enthusiastically came out to play. We enjoyed fantastic weather all three days with warm temperatures and very little wind. Seas were a modest 1-2 feet. Clearly, Bomber Mud Minnows in black/chartreuse and chartreuse/red tail, along with Berkley Ripple Shad in firetiger, were the lures to have on under popping corks. It was especially enjoyable to catch not a single catfish and to be bothered by only 2 or 3 sharks the entire trip. I continue to say that this 3 day, all-inclusive package is the best value in all of sportfishing."

Cousins Triple Up!

Gary concludes, "If you can slip in a visit yet this year, Captain Keith has a few openings left, and given favorable winds, the bite should remain very good right up to the first of the new year."

This week our Fly-in Floating Expedition Cabins are located at the Muhura reservation in the Matupiri and the Tupana rivers and we are also breaking waters at the lower Xeruini with another 8 angler group. Weather has been fine in both fisheries with some tropical showers as usual, some more serious rain is expected towards next weekend in both areas, lighter in he Carvoeiro area. Water levels are a bit high, mainly due to the El Niño influence in the region, this has somehow delayed the descent of the waters that are now descending as expected. Nevertheless fishing is showing good numbers, and feedback from the anglers also shows that they are enjoying good activity and the typical aggressiveness of peacocks at the beginning of the season. The largest PeacockBass trophy caught last week weighed 18 lbs and the final count for last week´s groups were a significant 2,649 peacockbass (12 anglers) and 1,551 peacockbass (8 anglers).

First Discovery of a GoldenDorado Fossil?

From the publication HoyCorrientes on December 16, 2013, we read of a recent fossil discovery related to the current "River Tiger" or GoldenDorado found in the Uruguay River of South America.

On the banks of the Parana fished a golden 8 million years old

"(In the Gallery Below) is the first fossil record of a golden. His head, found in excellent condition, allowed a detailed description of this issue and know what these fish predators during the Miocene. Many anglers often brag and pose for the picture, after taking a golden water of certain dimensions. Meanwhile, Argentine paleontologists rescued a copy that may have exceeded 50 inches, but most important is not your size, but allowed to know the past of these important fish fauna in South American rivers."

It looks like the "River Tiger" or some close family member may have been around for a long, long time. I'm sure we'll be hearing much more as this exploration and story continues to develop. In the mean time, I can't wait to get reacquainted with the most current family members of the GoldenDorado found below the Salto Grande Dam in the Uruguay River of South America.

GoldenDorado Fishing Report: New World Record?

The most recent report for South American GoldenDorado fishing includes one massive behemoth of the species, Salmius maxillosus. Check this out!

According to Amazon Angler Steve Townson, his client/angler Andrei Bylchynski “is responsible for catching the largest Golden Dorado ever recorded in South America. At well over 60lbs, if it would have been weighed officially on land, it would have broken the World Record by an estimated 6-8 lbs.”

The massive Golden Dorado was caught while casting a deep diving Rapala X Rap in the world famous tail waters of Salto Grande on the Uruguay River, Uruguay, SA. in the area known as “La Zona” [The Zone]. It is reported that when the behemoth was weighed on a 60lb boga grip, it bottomed out the internal scale.

This fish certainly appears to be one of the largest Golden Dorado ever landed, perhaps the largest! Under IGFA (International Game Fish Association) certification guidelines any attempt to establish a certified record would require the specimen to be weighed on land. The fish was not and therefore a challenge to the all tackle world record * will not be forthcoming. If it would have been properly weighed on land and the numerous other certification details completed correctly it would have most likely entered the record books as a new All Tackle World Record.

[*Record presently stands at 55 pounds 11 ounces]

We reported to you a few weeks ago of another angler in the group with angler Scott Krug who reported a Golden Dorado catch in early November of a giant well over 50#. There have been numerous others reported to landing cradle over the 55 pounds 11 ounces, the current world record mark as well. We have no doubt that these giants reside in the tails waters below Salto Grande and are being landed with more regularity.

There is no denying, this is one giant Golden and a magical catch for Andrei.

But it leaves me with this comment to my angling brothers. Somebody please, when you land the next “River Tiger” of this magnitude, with all due respect and caution, run that puppy to land, weigh it on a certified scale, measure it, clip the line, take a few proper photo’s, clean up any necessary IGFA certification loose ends, get that Golden Torpedo back in the water and then let’s move this bar up to 60# or more where it appears that it should legitimately now rest.
