The body of a man, believed to be in his mid-30s, was located at Amity Point, Stradbroke Island, this morning. The pair, from the suburb of Redland Bay, were reported missing at 10pm (AEST) yesterday after failing to return by their designated time of between 6pm and 7pm.

Police said they had left Victoria Point about 5am yesterday. Water Police are searching the area with approximately 10 boats assisting and two helicopters. Initial water searches were conducted last night but suspended until morning due to bad light. The two men are believed to have been using an aluminum dinghy about 4.8 meters long.

You can try your hand at peeling a shrimp in a contest that allows use of only one hand but permits the use of other body parts, if it helps. You can build a boat from scratch in two hours — then take it to sea and hope you don’t sink. And you can raise money for charity by entering a beauty pageant. Even if you’re a bloke.
The Australia-France Cooperative Enforcement Agreement that has recently entered into force allows joint Australian and French patrols to enforce each other's fishing laws in their respective exclusive economic zones (EEZs) and territorial seas in the Southern Ocean.

Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs, Martin Ferguson, said Australia and France have neighbouring EEZs in the Southern Ocean and share a common interest in protecting the valuable fisheries resources within it.

Besides facing the toughest provision of Australia's new anti-people-smuggling law, those responsible for dispatching the fishing boat will be liable to separate criminal charges, including manslaughter and reckless endangerment of life.

The law, passed earlier this year, created the new offence of "people-smuggling involving exploitation or danger of death or serious harm" and carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence. Based on information gathered from the Flying Fish Cove survivors, Australian investigators have given Indonesian counterparts the names of three suspects and requested the arrest of at least one, an Iranian national.

Mr Dunn said NSW Maritime Boating Officers would be on hand to patrol the waterway for the duration of the weekend event.

“Recent sustained rainfall had resulted in rapidly changing conditions, which would make navigation more difficult for less experienced operators, especially those from interstate who are new to the area,” Mr Dunn said. “There will be many operators especially from Victoria who may have never boated in these conditions before. “There is also the possibility of flash flooding which could result in additional debris in the area, increasing the risk of hazards,” Mr Dunn said.

There are no restrictions against drinking and driving a boat but Bay of Plenty regional Harbourmaster Carl Magazinovic said laws against drinking and boating would cause a decrease in water accidents.

Mr Magazinovic said although actual figures weren't recorded, "a couple of people" a day were caught drinking and boating during summer in Rotorua. "We do see it often and there are problems caused by it in the same way as on the roads," he said. "In Australia there are drinking and boating rules and I think it would be positive to restrict the use of alcohol on boats in New Zealand."

But only a small part of the collection is on display. Life-long fisherman Keith Alcorn converted his double garage into a 13 metre by 12 metre museum to house just part of his huge collection. Other items are being kept in storage at his home, which was specially rebuilt, while the remainder is stored in three sheds away from the home.

Mr Alcorn, 77, grew up in Lismore and has hung on to items either he or his father owned before deciding to become a serious collector 15 years ago.

The change will apply for the next two years after fishing for murray cod had been banned back in 2009. Fishing for the cod will still be banned during an annual closure season between August and the end of November. SA Fisheries Minister Michael O'Brien says strong penalties will apply for offences.

"The feedback from river-based communities and recreational fishers was that they understood the importance of protecting the species but there had to be a balance because recreational fishing is a great tourism activity," he said.
The 45-year-old fisherman died in front of witnesses who saw him struggling in the water about 1pm. His body was recovered by Sunshine Coast Water Police about 100 meters from shore. Phanupong Phamuang was sightseeing at Point Arkwright, just south of Coolum, when he saw the man fishing off rocks. The tourist, from Denmark, said what he saw next was “like a bad dream”.

As regular readers will know, Fisho has taken Pew to task over its push to have Australia's Coral Sea turned into the world's largest no-take marine park. So it came as a surprise to learn that PEW's head office is running a campaign to ban longline fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. The campaign features in an advertisement running in the American Sport Fishing and Marlin magazines.

Hook Marine scooped the Innovation Award at the Lloyd’s List Global Awards 2010 for its SeaWise Vessel Stability Monitor, which provides early warning of the development of a dangerous situation that could result in vessel capsize.

The device works by continually monitoring the rolling motion of a vessel when at sea. Ken Smith, MD of Hook Marine, said he was delighted to have received the accolade for SeaWise, but warned that there was very little interest in the device from the UK fishing industry and much work still needed to be done to ensure that fishermen recognised the huge safety benefits it offered.
