South Central Wyoming saw an influx of monsters in the past few weeks. Reports of these usually large creatures were all over Facebook and Twitter and are quite remarkable to comprehend.

Seriously though I have made two trips to Horse Creek Ranch, just 30 minutes from Cheyenne, and had some of my best days ever fishing for trout! First trip was with long time friend, Bruce Byington, who asked me to meet he and his wife on their way back from a road trip. Mary and I gladly met Bruce and Margie and spend an amazing afternoon and morning fishing the world class waters of this 75,000 acre piece of heaven. Mary and Margie didn’t fish but enjoyed the Rustic Elegance of the lodge and hospitality of the West. Mary was officially “mad” at me for not having her up to the Ranch sooner after realizing it is NOT a “fish camp” but quite nice and comfortable.Bruce and I caught 40+ fish over 20″ in one morning and had a wonderful time!

Bruce with a NICE Horse Creek Rainbow !!!

Brilliantly colored 'Bow from Horse Creek Ranch

Ten days later a new but FAST friend, Mark Conklin, flew in from Atlanta and we made the trek to Horse Creek early the next morning. An absolutely spectacular day ensued with Mark and I landing some of the prettiest fish either of us have ever seen.

Fall colored Brown for Mark Conklin!
The star fly of the day for Mark was the Girdle Bug …in fact he fished the same one (1) ALL day long , never losing it or changing flies. We never could figure out what the Girdle Bug fly represents but after these tenacious hits we REALLY DON”T CARE!!!!

I don’t know the total but somewhere North of 50+ Rainbow and Browns were landed from 18″ and up!!!

Mark and a Monster Rainbow! Boy was I wrong …mine have actually become my Carping shoe of choice …in the mud!

As you guys know (or should know) I a huge sight fisherman. Not on a stature basis but on the passion basis! Nothing gets me going more than to SEE a fish, CAST to a fish and WATCH them eat!!! Good thing my mother and grandmother are long gone as I would sell them both for an afternoon of sight fishing!

As my large fish options are limited somewhat in Colorado and I’m not traveling to Baja currently for the other show “Fish the Baja” my best choice to get my arms ripped off is Carp on the fly. Ok wait, don’t hang up or quit reading or whatever until you give Carp a try for yourself.

This is the “DarkSide” of fly fishing that you only talk about with committed buddies similarly infected. Most of my trout friends look at me like I’ve taken leave of my senses and fact is they are correct!!! I am totally obsessed with catching MONSTER Carp on the fly. It has become my drug of choice to deal with a new extreme flare up of T.A.S. For those of you not familiar with T.A.S. (Terminal Angler Syndrome) see the web page at this link for an explanation of this very widespread disease! [ http://tinyurl.com/4tabyar ]

Stalking Carp in a few ponds and the S.Platte River in downtown Denver has become a weekly if not more activity with me (is my wife reading this!). This much maligned fish is very picky, spooky, skittish yet very formidable a foe on the fly rod! Ones over 20 pounds are not uncommon in the waters of Colorado, and probably your home waters as well. Big Carp are even more difficult as they become quite wary as they age and even more so of a sloppy or splashy presentation. Crawdad patterns like Umpqua’s Golden Rag Stone or Dave Whitlock’s ‘Near ‘Nuff are fantastic patterns and can be attached to 10 or 12lb leader if the water is not too clear. I like to think of them as Rocky Mtn. Bonefish and they can rip drag with the power of a Bull redfish to boot!!!

This was a nearly two year process from the previous company that owned the name and then the official submission of the documents once completed. We have been working under a written agreement with the former owners for these past few years but it feels good to see things in writing! “Fishing Across America” is now airing on Pursuit Channel and Untamed Sports Channel in about 45 million households in the US and I am proud to say we are negotiating the details of a European invasion. I have been asked to start airing the shows in Italy and a couple other EU countries in the future! I’ll let you know how the progress goes as things mature. We hope to start filming new episodes of FAA soon for the 2012 season.
Thanks for your support and remember ” fish hard, boat safe, take a kid fishing when you get a chance, I’ll see you next week on Fishing Across America”!!!

A rainy day in Denver was good enough to get good friend Greg Mortensen his first Carp on the fly. Greg has been raggin’ on me for the past few months as my Golden Ghost obsession has taken shape, being a die hard trout fisherman that he is! Well I don’t know how well the infection has taken hold but he did land two nice Commons on his first trip out and got to feel the power. Time will tell how deep the disease will effect Greg’s angling behavior. The day saw 6 commons for me with a nice mirror thrown in for good measure. Watch the vids below!!!
