Helping Parents Help Kids Negotiate Our Digital World

From 2010 to 2014 the average daily use of mobile devices for adults went from just over an hour to over 5 hours per day, in addition to the three and a half hours spent online and over 4 hours watching TV. That brings the combined screen time for adults to over 12 hours a day not accounting for the dual screen situation where people watch TV while they surf the internet or communicate on their mobile devices.

That’s the average screen time for adults and then we wonder why our children are so attracted to screens and the potential damage they may be causing themselves. I read an article where a parent was discussing the mock dinner their young children were preparing and before pretending to serve anything they both checked pretend phones for texts and emails. Children have always wanted to be more grown up and the best example they have of that is watching their parents.

If you really want to limit your children’s screen time the first thing that you need to do is limit your screen time in front of them. It will be more difficult than you think but is extremely important if you are trying to show your kids that there is more to life than staring into a screen or mobile device. Babies learn by mimic

Official recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics for children’s screen time has remained largely unchanged since 1998:

· No time for kids under 2

· No more than 2 hours a day for older children

· Even with more and more education on computers they still suggest no more than 2 hours of recreational screen time per day

A report by common sense media reported that in 2013 75% of kids under age 8 had access to mobile devices and 38% of children under the age of 2 had access.

Organizations that support educational media technologies for kids call most of the content created for them “dopey activities” or the “empty calories” of the digital media world.

Parents need to be intentional about the amount of time their kids spend on screens and especially as to exactly what type of content they are watching and interacting with. It is equally important for parents to take the opportunity to spend time with their kids online instead of making a battle out of it make it an opportunity for learning and bonding.

Reports show that somewhere between 15% and 33% of teenagers have been cyber bullied over text messaging or social media. That is only one of the potential dangers when looking at the ever expanding digital world. In addition, there are plenty of other hazards that are not fully understood:

· The rewiring of the brain from too much screen interaction

· The interference with natural light and sleep cycles

· What activities are being replaced by the time kids are spending on screens

· The long term effects from lack of social interaction

· And many other, physical, social and psychological

Ask your kids to teach you their favorite games, as well as any educational games along with any rewards or bonuses they have achieved.

Some sites and games have listed or suggested age limits take a look and follow the recommended limits.

Have periodic discussions with your kids about their online activity and what to be careful as they grow older and spend more and more time on the different social networks and websites.

If you are going to monitor your child’s screen or online activity have a conversation with them first so they know you are monitoring them and that you are doing it to keep them safe. If you do it without them knowing, you risk damaging the trust they have with you.

Every type of device has parental controls and screen sharing capabilities so you can easily keep an eye on your child’s screen time and keep them safe.

Managing Technology, Screen Time and Kids

There are a lot of issues that need to be considered when looking at kids and screen time or technology.

How much technology or screen time can have negative effects.

Now that there is a screen or 2 in every room not to mention the smaller screens that every person in the room is holding when is it too much?

In addition to that then there is the type of content and how much of the various types of content is considered too much:

Many kids left on their own would happily play video games for days on end so it’s important to put together a screen time plan that teaches them the discipline they will need as they grow older and the world becomes more and more digital.

Helping your children when they begin school for the first time

A child’s entering preschool or kindergarten can be a source of excitement for kids and parents,but it can also be a source of stress or fear.

Today’s kindergartens, and pre-schools for that matter, have changed. There are distinctive differences in race, religion, family lives and level of education. Some children don’t have the ability to recognize letters of the alphabet while others can read and understand words and even sentences.

It’s important to do everything you can to help prepare your child for the educational, emotional, psychological and social interactions they are going to experience.

It’s difficult to prepare your child for everything that can happen as they begin their educational career but there are some basic areas you can cover that will give them the highest potential for success.

·      Take the time to get to know the local schools and choose the class your child will attend carefully.

·      Get the school’s enrollment and curriculum documents as well as the CV’s of the teachers.

·      Attend all open houses and any school tours that are available.

·      Spend time with your child doing learning activities long before their first day of school begins.

·      Encourage your child to get excited about reading and education as well as making sure they know you will be there to support them.

·      Challenge your child as you work with them and demonstrate how to handle situations where they may feel overwhelmed.

·      Talk with your child’s new teacher and discuss the teacher’s goals for the children in his/her class.

·      Ask the teacher if there are specific days that parents are invited to participate in class and how else you can help.

·      Find and use technology, books and other available tools to show your child how exciting and fun learning and making new friends can be.

Bullying Statistics at Schools In The United States

Helping your kids to recognize and deal with bullying is more important then ever with over 20% of kids reporting they have been bullied and at least that number being bullied or stalked online. Fist and foremost is to talk with your kids and make sure they can recognize bullying and know what to do when it is happening top them or someone they care about.

In 2013, about 22 percent of students ages 12–18 reported being bullied at school during the school year. Of students ages 12–18, about 14 percent reported that they were made fun of, called names, or insulted; 13 percent reported being the subject of rumors; and 6 percent reported that they were pushed, shoved, tripped, or spit on. Of those students who reported being pushed, shoved, tripped, or spit on at school, about 21 percent reported injury as a result of the incident. Additionally, about 4 percent of all students reported being excluded from activities on purpose, 4 percent reported being threatened with harm, 2 percent reported that others tried to make them do things they did not want to do, and 2 percent reported that their property was destroyed by others on purpose.

"At school" includes the school building, on school property, on a school bus, or going to and from school. Bullying types do not sum to totals because students could have experienced more than one type of bullying. Students who reported experiencing more than one type of bullying at school were counted only once in the total for students bullied at school.

Anger is felt by people of all ages and only gets worse when it is not handled well.

Not helping your kids to recognize anger in themselves and handle it appropriately can become a big issue especially once kids start to attend school and are required to interact with others.

Your kids can’t deal with situations that produce anger within them if they don’t recognize these types of situations and that they are getting angry.

Some common causes of anger especially within kids are:

· Feeling misunderstood

· Feeling that you are not being paid attention to

· Frustration from a number of different sources

· Being expected to complete tasks that are above your abilities

· Feeling like you don’t have enough time to finish what is expected of you

· Being disappointed by a test score or other low performance indicator

· Being teased or picked on by classmates or other students

· The feeling of fear can often turn to anger when not dealt with

· Bottling up negative feelings can eventually turn to anger

· Low self-esteem or not feeling good about one’s self can cause anger

· Physical ailments like tiredness or a headache can make people more apt to be angry

· Being ignored or not listened to can cause anger especially over time

These are just a few of the ways that kids can become angry or allow feelings to build up that eventually explode into some kind of an angry temper tantrum.

Parents and teachers can keep an eye for certain giveaways that may warn them of a child’s upcoming anger or display of anger towards another child or adult.

· Red Face

· Clenched Jaw

· Tight Fists

· Trembling or looking shaky

· Louder than usual

· Looking for an argument

There are plenty of strategies for dealing with anger and they vary wildly depending on at which stage you encounter the anger. The sooner you are able to recognize the potential problem and help them with it the easier it will be to handle. When helping someone that is having a problem with anger there are ongoing methods that can have a great effect.

· Helping them keep a journal of when they get upset

· Keep a journal of productive ways to handle anger and what happens

· Give them a list of calming exercises

· Teach them to relax using counting down exercises or taking a walk

· Work with their teachers to keep an eye on the situation and help them before they need it

· Help them to identify when they are getting upset early so they can take actions before their anger gets out of hand

· Help them to set goals and and time frames then track them

· Reward them when they successfully handle anger and add it to their journal

Parents can often be more nervous and scared then their kids on the first day of school

· There are many reasons that cause fear in parents when their kids start school

· They are afraid their kids will be scared in the new environment

· Their kids won’t be able to finds their way around or get lost

· Their kids will be nervous to the point that they won’t eat lunch or use the bathroom when they need to

· They will miss their parents

· They won’t have the help they need to handle all of the new situations and kids and people they will be meeting

· They won’t make friends

· They will be behind the class when it comes to learning

· The will miss their bus or other ride

· They won’t be able to get help if they need it from their teachers or teacher’s assistants

· They will get tired throughout the day not being used to putting in a full day or half day as they are now needed to do

All of these fears and concerns are easily taken care of as long as you prepare for them and prepare your child adequately for all of the new experiences and interactions that will be happening with them. Role playing with your child can do wonders for not just your child but also you as you walk through potential situations that could come up and how to handle them. In a future post I will cover some examples of great role playing exercises that will help you and your child to prevent any fear or anxiety as your kids become students and then young adults.

Pre-School and Kindergarten classes alike give young students the ability to get used to being around and interacting with other students while in a learning and cooperative environment.

A good experience will carry forward with the child and help them as they move forward with their education and with their life. The self-esteem and confidence they develop is priceless as they grow and mature into teenagers and adults. Preparing your child for the opportunity and challenge of learning and working with other students to achieve a common goal is some of the most rewarding experiences they will have as young kids.

Parents have a great opportunity to help their children and give them an advantage that will help them in school and everywhere else they have the chance of meeting or interacting with other kids their age or people in general. The best skill sets to begin helping your children with are extremely simple to demonstrate and practice with them.

Listening Skills

Paying attention to what other people are saying and just as important be quiet as others are trying to speak, maybe even some questioning games.

Sharing and Generosity

Showing them how good it feels to be shared with and equally how good it feels to share and be generous with others.

Patience and Taking Turns

Teach the idea of being patient with others and taking turns when there are lots of people waiting for the same thing.

Self Confidence

Showing them that what they think and feel matters and they should be confident in knowing that and sharing those thoughts with others.

Feeling Good About Themselves

Help them to feel good about who they are as a person and how special they are. Teach them that it’s important to trust and have faith in yourself.

Curiosity and a Love of Learning

Teaching your kids to have a healthy curiosity and instilling in them a drive to learn will be something that will help them throughout their entire lives.

This is a great start in working with your kids. The best way to instill these skills in your kids is to demonstrate them yourself and point out to your kids how and when you take advantage of these to help you with them and those around you.
