If you’ve watched the weight lifting competitions consisting of the ‘clean & jerk’ as well as the ‘snatch’ technique during the Olympics, you would have noticed weight lifters wearing thick belts during their lift in the competition.

That’s the fitness weight belt that is normally used in powerlifting or weightlifting.

There are pros and cons to wearing this belt, thanks to the controversy that has been stirred up recently by purists in the weightlifting business and medical experts as well.

And yet despite all this, the thrill of watching these men push the limits is enough to get your heart pumping and feel that adrenaline rush through your body while you go through your workout.

But before we get bum rushed into Mr. Olympia mode, let’s understand what the weight belt is used for before we go into its pros and cons.

The Weight Belt – What is it?
Weight belts much like conventional belts come in different shapes and sizes yet their functionality remains the same: for support. However, in the case of weight belts, the functionality is to support the lower back, and thus safely increase the intra-abdominal pressure while lifting large weights in strength training or competitions.

The weight belt originates from the ‘back belt’ or the ‘back support belt’ because they were used by industrial workers to protect their backs while lifting heavy weights. So, you can see that the functionality is the same although the reason for use varies.

These days, there are Olympic weightlifting belts and powerlifting belts as well, and most of them are made of leather or Velcro. The width of the powerlifting belt remains the same around the circumference of the belt, while in the Olympic belt are wider at the back (when strapped on) to support their lower backs.

So, you next obvious question would be (amidst all the controversy), do you need one?

Weight Lifting Belts – Do I need one while working out?
The answer to this question depends on your state or health and fitness. If you’re a fitness-junkie (pardon the paradox) you probably don’t need to use one all the time. Now, just in case, you’re struggling from an injury or are attempting to lift large weights, a weight belt helps in preventing further injury or the risk of getting one.

But if you’re healthy enough, and you don’t push your limits while working out, then you don’t need to use one.

One of the reasons why there has been some controversy around the constant usage of weight belts is because using one with light weights doesn’t help strengthen your abdominal muscles in the workout, as it the relieves the pressure by almost 25%. So you can imagine how useful the belt is in these circumstances. Such are the pros and cons that surround this controversy of using the weight belt in fitness routines.

In Closing
Apart from the amount of usage involved, there is no scientific proof that it actually helps in protecting your back, as the benefits involved are largely geared to protect the lifter from the risk of injury.

Finally, as mentioned earlier there’s no need to use one constantly while using light weights, only of course if you’re performing exercises where the lower back in involved such as the military press, the squat and the deadlift.

If you’re not doing too much or aren’t injured, you can do without these extra contraptions while working out as your body is all you need, really.

The first thing that comes to mind when one comes across the ‘Dietician vs. Nutritionist’ dilemma, is the phrase ‘the devil is in the detail’. At first impression, both these words seem scholarly enough as you need to go through four syllables to pronounce both words.

Another observation about these words is that they sound terribly important that only a person who is accustomed to chastising his clients (by giving these poor indulgent souls veggie-only meals, perhaps) and uses them to describe his designation in the profession of healthcare.

Your first response: Pffuuit! Who cares?

But once you begin to frequent the doctors’ for medical check-ups… and he tells you to watch out, perhaps the questions below arise on being required to consult an expert on the kind of food you’re allowed to have and more pertinently, not have.

Is there a difference? So what? Why bother? Is it such a big deal anyways? How will knowing the difference between the two (if there is a difference) affect me?

All very pertinent questions that will be answered if you read on…

Dietician vs Nutritionist: Let’s dig a little deeper…
The first thing here is that there’s a difference. In more ways that one.

So let me explain with an example:
If I gave you the option to consult a psychologist or a voodoo-man, who would you choose?

Most sane people would choose a psychologist.

Why?

They’re well equipped by conventional standards of medicine [Read: by virtue of their qualifications] to look after the well-being of their clients by knowing enough in their area of specialization to refer to them as their patients.

This nice little analogy also applies to the Dietician vs Nutritionist, where the nutritionist is the quack (voodoo man, empath, astrologer… pick your poison, really), and the psychologist is the Dietician.

And as always, your education can play a large role in determining whether you’re going to make a sizeable amount of amount compared to your street-smart counterparts (leaving out anomalies such as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs out of course).

Actually, to be regarded as a registered dietician, you’ll have to complete a bachelor’s degree with an area of specialization from an accredited university just like any other doctor.

Yes, just like the one you visit for your regular check-ups. No, not the voodoo man that you spend 5 cents a minute calling, to find out what the future holds. Perhaps, for reasons related to a strange mixture of mirth, boredom and curiosity.

But I digress.

This also involves taking (and most importantly, passing) an exam much like lawyers who have to take the ‘bar’ exam.

But of course, this does not mean that nutritionists don’t know anything about the value of nutrients in the food, and can’t make valid recommendations. They do, but they’re not experts in nutritional science like dieticians are.

As I said, the education that provides them legal certification makes the difference here.

In Closing
All dieticians are nutritionists but nutritionists aren’t dieticians unless they decide to study the subject in greater detail. I hope that’s simple enough to understand the difference between the two. Here's a video that drives that point home.

So when it comes to choosing between old grandmother’s remedies (and recipes) and consulting a doctor on any serious health issues, I’m sure you’ll understand that the dietician is the person to go to.

So, what’s your favorite snack while settling down for a quiet night in front of the boob tube or at the movies?

Popcorn is the popular response I gather. And it’s healthy… make no mistake!

If you’re at the movies though, you can literally see people shoveling down throatfuls of popcorn as well as washing it down with a supersized Coke relentlessly. No wonder obesity seems to be the problem these days thanks to the generous amount of oil, butter and salt used to add flavor to a serving of popcorn.

I’ve seen a woman take about 20 minutes to fit into a chair while getting ready for a JP Morgan Chase New Hire training session, and just about making it ‘in time’. It was torturously funny if not embarrassing because getting out of the seat for lunch was a different story altogether. And I can’t help but think to myself as to why would anyone want to put themselves through embarrassments like this.

I don’t think the problem lies with the popcorn but actually the amounts that we tend to shovel down our throats especially while you can keep track of how much you’re actually eating, while watching a movie or your favorite sitcom.

The reason for my explanation is because popcorn belongs to the family of Whole grains, which are healthy for you. Not unless your proclivity for eating popcorn matches the amount of food served buffet style at the nearest ‘lucky’ Chinese restaurant. And you might as well pray for the magic of the fortune cookie to work on your luck, because you’re going to need some in the fitness department.

But I digress.

So, what are whole grains then?

Whole Grains
Very simply, whole grains are cereal grains that retain the bran, the germ and the endosperm as opposed to refined grains that remove the first two.

Examples of whole grains are rolled oats or oat groats, hulled (not pearled) barley, popcorn, brown rice, whole wheat flour, sprouted grains and whole wheat bread.

So now why are whole grains healthier than refined grains?

It is because of the retention of the bran and the germ along with the endosperm. The endosperm contains only carbohydrates and protein (refined grains) but the added value of including the bran and the germ are the B-vitamins, minerals, fiber, heart-healthy oils and protein that increase the nutritional value of the meal. Of course, research has shown that whole grain decrease the risk of heart disease, some types of cancer, Type-2 diabetes, the reduction of bad cholesterol while regulating blood sugar level and helping the body to control its weight.

So what this means is while you do get the carbohydrate and protein nutrients from refined grains, whole grains simply have a wider range of nutrients which have advantages that refined grains don’t have.

So it only bodes well that you choose to go the whole grain way, not unless you don’t care about your health or what you eat or if you don’t have common sense. Good luck with all that, then!

In Closing
It’s understandable that some people are foodies, and like foods that are classified as junk. Well, most of the time we gravitate to cravings that are just not good for us, and so it’s just as hard to let go of food that you like just as alcoholics or junkies who can’t do without their poison. Yet the challenge to reaching your goals of fitness can be made much easier if you watch what (and how much) you eat. All it really depends on is whether you prefer the habit over health!

Tom Hanks, one of Hollywood’s leading men, has always been a favorite of mine when it comes to the movies from ‘When Harry met Sally’ all the way to ‘Angels and Demons’ that was released this year. But there’s one role that is laudable in my humble opinion, playing a corrections officer at Louisiana’s Cold Mountain Penitentiary in the movie, The Green Mile.

And no, this is not a artsy-fartsy review of Stephen King’s novel upon which the movie is based, but it was the first thing that came to mind as Tom fell to his knees while struggling with the excruciating pain while trying to pass urine (which is what we’re discussing here).

Well, to put it bluntly it’s like getting kicked in the balls, a knife in your back or whatever makes you go numb with pain!

And this will also remind you of the time you would go ‘ouch’ when you watch your favorite athlete taking an unexpected hit in the nuts. And all those delightful ball-breaking memories come flooding back…

Strange déjà vu, it seems.

And the experience of getting kicked in the nuts (Read: any trauma or illness in the pubic area) will change your life forever. And then you begin to contemplate your life as a man…

But I digress as we’re talking about kidney stones here…

Here’s a video that provides information on kidney stones.

Kidney Stones – Symptoms
Well, it’s pretty obvious to most of us (health-conscious or not) that when a stone is formed in your kidney, and passes through the urinary tract… you will know what pain is!

In most cases, the pain is either the dull, toothache variety at one side of your back or the sharp pain that occurs in waves and makes you feel like you’re being carved up by a gourmet chef in the abdominal region, not surprisingly leaving you in those tantric positions (that you see in these yoga classes) to ease the pain.

Either this is something you’ve learned off by second-hand experience (watching a loved one suffer) or have experienced it yourself first-hand. These situations you find yourself in is anything but gratifying, as you’ll conclude!

A couple of other common symptoms include:
1. Blood in your urine.
2. Fever
3. Vomiting
4. Urine that smells bad or looks
5. A burning sensation while urination

Now that we’re aware of the common symptoms, let’s look at the treatments that involve removing the kidney stones, and more importantly, the pain that gives it such a scary reputation.

Kidney Stones – Treatment
Depending on the seriousness of the patient’s condition, several options are available for treatment, and which will be recommended by your physician once they complete the urine tests that are required to make an accurate diagnosis.

Of the kinds of treatment to remove the stone, the simplest are to increase hydration levels as well as completely stop food that have are either caffeine-based or dairy-related products. In some cases, it works in removing the stone… and you’ve been lucky if you’re one of them!

But for the not so lucky ones, other procedures such as shock wave treatment, tunnel surgery, the Ureteroscope procedure as well as a full scale surgery are available to remove the stone as required.

And your physician will tell you which one is best for you so there’s nothing to worry about other than taking care of yourself.

Conclusion
As the introductory video to what a kidney stone is suggests that the chances of a person who has had a kidney stone in the past is more likely to get another one. What this suggests that it’s not enough to get yourself seen by a doctor but you have to ensure that you maintain a diet in order to ensure that it never happens again. And if you’re the types who doesn’t learn from experience, the pain should serve as motivation to maintain a decent diet through exercise and nutrition, ensuring that you will never have to go through another kidney stone emergency ever again.

Introduction
When we talk about taste, I’m reminded of the rock star Michael Hutchence (of INXS fame) who lost his taste (read: no or damaged taste buds) in an accident with a postal truck.

The tragedy of it all was that Michael Hutchence had millions of dollars with which he could have savored the finest meals in the best restaurants around the world, but with no taste… it wouldn’t matter whether he ate sandpaper or did the whole caviar and wine thing!

Taste Buds: Important facts
By now its common knowledge that the taste buds (called taste receptor cells at a cellular level) are located in the mouth, and obviously its function is to taste the nourishment that is a part of our daily routine, and send the information to the brain based on the

Of course, you should also know that the five elements of taste are salty, sour, bitter, sweet, and umami (or savory), and for at least once in our lifetimes, we would have felt how each of these elements really taste.

From the example of Michael Hutchence, it’s pretty obvious that our taste buds are irreplaceable and therefore should be taken care of, as much as possible especially when they’re inflamed which we’ll discuss next.

Inflammation in the Taste Buds: Causes
Since the direction of this piece of writing is to help you to avoid inflammation of the taste buds, which will leave that proverbial bad taste in your mouth (winky wink), it’s important to list the common causes of inflammation in the taste buds. And I say causes (not cause) because there can be several reasons for the occurrence of an inflammation in your taste buds.

Here’s a list of causes (some of them are self-explanatory):
1. Age
2. Disease
3. Exposure to toxins like tobacco smoke and insecticides
4. Heredity
5. Infections
6. Injury
7. Laryngectomy
8. Oral Inflammation
9. Radiation therapy
10. Vitamin deficiencies
11. Endocrinal disorders such as Hypothyroidism, hypoadrenalism, and diabetes mellitus, and dental problems
12. Certain herbs and supplements (such as chewing gymnema leaves)

One thing’s for certain with each of these causes for inflammation is that you’ll understand the value of being able to taste apart from the other perceivable effects that will help you realize how important it is to be careful wherever and whenever you can.

Inflammation of Taste Buds: Effects
For one, you won’t be able to taste a particular food or drink properly like before. Irritation and swelling in the particular area are the most common effects.

What you can do about it
In the case of bites and scratches (and all I can think of is naughty naughty here), it’s not that serious as you can apply glycerin to the affected area. In the case of burns, chewing on ice chips as well as eating soft and cold foods will help relieve the pain as well as prevent the affected area from being aggravated. However, if you aren’t able to determine the source of the infection, it is better to consult a doctor immediately before turning to grandmomma’s home remedies.

In Closing
There no need to go loco because of the Michael Hutchence example given earlier as it is rare, and under circumstances of extreme trauma… but that doesn’t mean you can afford to careless with your health. After whose gonna pay for it, with your pocket (and your tongue). You, of course.

When one encounters a phrase such as ‘Healthy Fast Food’, it’s ‘suspend your disbelief’ time as the conceptualization of such an idea seems to ridiculously defy our experiences in the real world. Perhaps the use of such a phrase belongs to the world of sci-fi cinema where allowances for such contradictions are permissible at the cost of being entertained, and perhaps a reason being that with time, the meaning of the word ‘fast food’ has taken on a healthier connotation unlike its monstrous reputation in this day and age.

Yet sometimes, much like Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series which elicited the use of video-phones that became a reality not so long ago, the same can be said of the phrase ‘healthy fast food’ despite the controversy and questions about its adverse effects on health that have been brought up time and again.

Simply put, most popular fast food joints do offer healthy alternatives now. Yes, it’s true!

(So we can happily go on to dedicate the ‘suspend your disbelief’ part of our lives religiously for Hollywood and the boob tube.)

And check out some of the options that are at our disposal at some of America’s largest fast food chains…

Healthy Fast Food Options
1) McDonalds
Serving almost 47 million meals a day, McDonalds is one of America’s most popular fast food restaurants in the world. The McDonalds grilled chicken salads with low-fat dressings is the best choice while the Fruit 'n' Yogurt Parfait dessert also works towards eating a meal with as less calories as possible.

2) Burger King
Some of the healthier options Burger King are (again!) the grilled chicken salads, a chicken sandwich with a garden salad as well as the Veggie burger which many say is a bold step for a meat-dominated burger franchise to have on their menu.

3) Wendy's
Similar to the option listed for the burger joints above, grilled chicken sandwich or salads are healthy with low-fat dressings. And just for variety’s sake, try a large chili with a side salad.

4) Pizza Hut
Healthy options at Pizza Hut include the Thin 'N' Crispy Pizzas and the Fit 'n Delicious Pizzas with their garden salads and light dressings.

5) Taco Bell
Their range of Fresco tacos and burritos are better options than the rest of the menu along with the side salads.

6) KFC
The salads and chicken are fine here, but remember to order for chicken without the skin. Also ensure that they chicken is grilled and not fried.

Now since this isn’t a comprehensive list, there’s a neat little pocketbook conveniently called the ‘Pocketbook Dietician – Guide to 500-calorie Restaurant Meals’ that one can refer to before ordering a meal at most restaurant and fast food joints in the U.S. You can find it at this link.

In Closing
Yet in all these choices, there is one believable choice that hasn’t been mentioned because it isn’t fast food as much as it is fresh food – Subway. It is the most popular choice amongst these restaurants when it comes to a low-calorie diet (amongst the health & diet conscious folk) yet it doesn’t belong with the big six mentioned above for obvious reasons. So if you can’t be bothered with perusing through pocketbooks and customizing your meal, Subway’s just right for you! Yes, yet another missed opportunity for to suspend your disbelief, while Samuel Taylor Coleridge turns in his grave…

We see examples of excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis every day. In your normal life, you would have encountered one such person if you don’t have it yourself.

One such friend had greasy palms and armpits that would require him to change shirts frequently in a day, and he was no stranger to the remarks that would do the rounds unbeknownst to him, thanks to the unusual body odor.

Perhaps if people knew why that happened they could’ve been a little more sensitive to this embarrassing affliction that was no fault of the guy. Strangely enough, regardless of these rude first impressions he went to become the president of our college.

To me that was one heck of a social comeback! But let’s read on to understand the stigma that excessive perspiration can cause so that we can sensitive to people who have to deal with this on a daily basis.

Perspiration
First and foremost, it is a normal thing to sweat or perspire. And how does this happen?

All mammals have sweat glands as we all and are further divided into two types of glands such as the apocrine and merocrine sweat glands. The Apocrine sweat glands in mammals are in the area of the armpits, groin and around the nipples.

Apocrine glands are much lesser in number as compared to its well-spread counterpart, the merocrine sweat glands that are located all over the surface of your body extending from the inner to the outer layers of the skin.

This type of sweat gland is located greater concentration on the skin of our palms and soles as compared to the other parts of our body.

So why do we sweat?
Firstly, thermoregulation is very important for the body especially at times of excess activity, where the sweat excreted cools the surface of the skin and hence reduces body temperature. Secondly, it also works as a route to get rid of excess electrolytes and water that is a part of our body. Thirdly and finally, it protects our body from environmental hazards such as harmful chemicals and the growth of bacteria on our body.

So, by now you should’ve figured that it’s a good thing to sweat unlike our four-legged friends who just ‘sweat it off’ by panting.

Just like all things that can turn harmful when excessive in nature, sweating in large amounts is not only harmful for the body as well as cause danger and embarrassment (as in my friend’s case). So let’s look at the reason why excess sweating takes place…

Cause for excessive perspiration or sweating
Doctors and researchers have concluded that the reason for this phenomenon to occur is mostly hereditary. As sweating is a function that is controlled by the autonomous nervous system that also controls common functions such as heart rate and blood pressure, we as humans have no control over this part of our nervous system.

Talk about being helpless… huh?

So you can only treat the symptoms and not the disease in this case, if you get my drift. This is why there is a blast of herbal medications, talcum powders, different oral medications, lotions, and injections of botox to combat the embarrassing odor (the bacterial breakdown of sweat). However, it also requires the person to change his clothes just as you would rush to do the last time you pissed in your pants… thanks to having one too many beers.

Conclusion
Hyperhidrosis is not fatal but can have a strong impact on one’s social, functional and emotional standing. Hence, it bodes well for the rest of us to treat them with dignity and respect and all the more when we should count ourselves fortunate to not inherit an annoying illness such as excessive sweating. And in most cases, that is all we need to do – be cognizant of another’s needs.

You know, the Gerard Butler abs that guys want and the Jessica Biel abs that a lot of girls want? Well, achieving that goal is closer than you might think. Here are 5 tips to help you get on your way to reaching 6 pack abs:

1. You Don't Need to Do Thousands of Crunches. Ab exercises will help build your ab muscles, but they won't get rid of your belly fat and show that flat, hard stomach that you have hiding. The trick is to focus on intense training like sprinting and weight lifting and not spend too much time worrying about ab exercises. As you burn calories, your abs will start showing.

2. Try Isometric Exercises Like Planks. Isometric exercises are a great way to tone up a muscle, rather than make it huge. This is great if you're looking to that flat, toned abs look. Planks and side planks are excellent for this.

3. Nutrition, Nutrition, Nutrition. The best workout plan in the world will not make up for a terrible diet. The most important thing in getting those hard, 6 pack abs is to eat a balanced diet of whole wheat bread, vegetables, fruits, some dairy products and lean meat. If you want to lose weight, count your calories and take out 500 calories from your diet per day to lose 1 pound of fat per week. Once you have great nutrition you'll start seeing your abs in no time.

4. Keep Motivated. Try and keep yourself motivated to keep on training and eating right. Some things that might help are listening to good workout music, thinking positive thoughts, and being a part of a community of people who are trying to reach similar goals. Even if your motivation does go down at some point, and that happens to all of us, push yourself to workout anyway. There will be good days and bad days, but in the end you will look back and know it was worth it.

5. Don't Feel Guilty About the Occasional Relapse. Don't feel guilty about binge eating at your best friends wedding or missing an occasional workout. Just don't give up and even after a relapse, get right back into the groove of working out and eating right and soon you'll get to the point where you'll even be able to let yourself go once in awhile while still maintaining your hard-earned 6 pack abs.

What are you waiting for? Go out there and get those abs!
