Breaking a sweat can stimulate genes that make energy-regulating proteins

In a recent article published by Rebecca Cheung, it was claimed that “Exercise can make over muscles — even at the DNA level”.

So we now know that we can use techniques such as hypnosis for weight loss, and exercise for fat loss, it is now revealed that we can change our genes! That’s good news.

In the 7Cell Metabolism article it reported that after an intense workout at the gym for example, certain chemical changes to DNA appear in a person’s muscle cells. These alterations trigger genes that regulate a cell’s energy.

This work helps explain the mechanism by which exercise benefits cells. It further raises questions about whether the benefits of an active lifestyle are passed from parent to child, says study co-author Romain Barrès of the University of Copenhagen. Barres asks; “Do we carry some consequence of whether our parents were active or not?”

Scientists have in the past demonstrated that exercise can stimulate the activity of certain genes that can make proteins that regulate cellular powerhouses called mitochondria.

Scientists studied biopsied cells from thigh muscles of adults who had undergone low- and high-impact cycling workouts. After the more strenuous workout, muscle cells had fewer methyl groups attached to DNA and higher levels of blueprints for energy-regulating proteins compared with cells that had completed a low-impact workout.

Michael Skinner, from Washington State University states that this study unlocks innovative ideas about the role of chemical alterations such as methylation in muscle function and development. He goes on to say that additional research will need to examine whether other genes are affected by the chemical modifications to DNA found in this study.

In conclusion Skinner adds; “What this likely suggests is that if you did this early in life, while muscles were being developed, that might actually program the muscle.”

I get a lot of call from clients wanting know how they can utilise impossibly small budgets to buy the best gym equipment available. Let’s see what I can do.

Any of you who have ever bought and tried to exercise on a supermarket treadmill will already know the dangers of buying cheap, (you can all skip the first part of this article). Cheap purchases are the most expensive long terms purchases.

The first part of this article is for those of you who are still considering the cheapest treadmill or home gym in the country. In case you were wondering here is how you can see if is a cheapo low quality unit.

• Point 1; it is cheap, very cheap. Too cheap for an intelligent person like you to believe that it is going to last

Cheap Gym Equipment Looks Cheap!

• Short warranty period. One year? And what do we do with it when it breaks down in one year? Oh yes, something else for the junk mail of the garage sale. And talking of the junk mail have you noticed what brand of treadmill everyone is trying to get rid of?

• Being sold by the same staff member who sells watches, cell phones and illicit videos from the back of the shop. If he is an exercise expert then I am…. you know what I mean.

Trust Me!!!!

• Has a small motor and the manufacturer brags about its “peak horse power”. Bragging about peak horse power is like saying “my car goes really fast down a mine shaft”. Small crustaceans love small treadmill motors. If you weigh more than 6o grams then buy something decent

When I used to set up gyms around the country I was given advice by my mentor at the time. “stop taking phone calls from agents who have great deals” he said. “look on a map or drive around and decide exactly where you want to be, then contact the agent. Only look at things that satisfy your needs”

That is still good advice today. The fact that you are reading this means that you are looking for some good advice. Choose a product that will assist you in achieving your fitness goals first, then look at prices. It may not be the cheapest machine, but remember this;

Once your health has deteriorated then even the most expensive unit in the world will not make you healthy again. If you don’t have to exercise (and who does really?), then ask how you will make time for the health problems which will slow you down as you get older.

The issue is not if you have time to exercise, the issue is what other activity in your current schedule will have to be cut back to make more time for exercise?

Research has consistently shown that more than 50% of gym members don’t use their memberships. Why? They are not comfortable in the gym environment for one or more reasons.

Research has also shown that impulse purchase fitness equipment is hardly every used. Impulse means you go to the supermarket and put the bread and treadmill in the same basket.

And lastly people who have bought cheap exercise equipment often don’t have money left over for gym membership or better equipment. Unfortunately that cheap purchase becomes the most expensive purchase ever and your health and pocket suffers.

As one of my lectures said many years ago, “you don’t miss your health until it is taken away from you and then, frequently it is too late to get it back” We don’t spend enough on health and I honestly include myself in that category

4. Running can be a very effective workout and most people know how to run.

2. Do you find running very boring? Rowing is a great workout
3. Do you have less than R10 000 to spend? Buy a rower, elliptical or bike. Not a treadmill under R10 000
4. Do you need to build muscle more than get fit or lose weight? If muscle toning in your aim them buy a mutigym
5. Clients at a BMI of 45 and over or in excess of 180KG in body weight should consider other exercise options before cardio machines. Multigyms and free weights performed in the right way are great fat burners
