Tunturi is a gym equipment and fitness equipment manufacturer. The company was started in 1922 and is regarded as the first gym equipment company to produce cardio equipment on a large scale basis.

The company is perhaps the first company to develop fitness equipment for the sake of exercise alone.

Their expertise developed from manufacturing bicycles and mopeds

In the 1990s the company made a strategic decision to focus their energy on developing exercise bikes and later on treadmills.

In 2003 Tunturi was acquired by Accel group, Europe’s largest producer and seller of or bicycles and fitness equipment. Accel of course are the owners of the Tunturi sister brand Bremshey.

For many people LACK OF EXERCIZE it is nothing but a guilt trip, perpetuated by their inability to take action, even on the smallest of scales. That does not have to be you.
Starting an exercise program is easy, why not start your new life today rather than in a year’s time?
There are various reasons why somebody would want to train at home, and you may be scouring the web looking for you first gym equipment purchase. If I have read your mind well enough then I would say that you are looking for a treadmill?

In most cases I find that when I discuss goals with clients there are a number of different goals such as muscle gaining, toning and weight loss. Write the goal down, visualise what you will be and can do when you have achieved this goal. Now make the commitment and let’s get you started.

3. Do I need other equipment? Actually I shall commit the sin of “mind reading” and answer this one. Yes, you probably do want to have some sort of strength training as well as a treadmill. Contrary to what most people think, running and cardio training alone is NOT an effective way to lose weight. A combination of strength training and cardio is the best way.
This, of course links in with point number one. Discuss your needs with a reputable vendor or a fitness professional before buying the wrong equipment. If you are looking to get in shape, lose weight or improve your health and fitness utilizing a low impact cost efficient machine, then take a few minutes to read this.
Can you remember the last time in the gym that you exercised to the extent that your skin tingled with exhilaration, your muscles worked, your endorphins flowed and you just knew that you had done your body and health justice?
I have just had one of those workouts on an exceptional item of exercise equipment.
Turns out that there are a select number of fitness equipment or gym equipment machines that can achieve this sort of workout and they are few and far between. You have to dig deep to find them. Especially if you want a machine with a price tag that suits a home gym owner’s pocket.
Enter the WaterRower

Of course I have made extensive use of all types of cardio machines available in the gyms, I love the spinning bikes, I enjoy a sprint on the treadmill and I appreciate the calorie burning efficiency of the stepper and the elliptical trainer, and I will even laze around on an upright cycle or recumbent exercise bike whilst thinking about my next bodybuilding workout or yoga session.
I have however always had a great respect for the rather neglected row of exercise rowers at the health club. And for good reason, rowing burns more calories than any other exercise. In fact many exercise specialists regard rowing as the perfect aerobic exercise. It offers a variably intense workout with low impact smooth motion and an all body involvement. It really is unrivalled for its physical benefits.
Scientific studies from the university of Leeds estimates that Rowing works 81 to 84 percent of your muscle mass, helps to tone and strengthen your muscles and burns far more calories than most other aerobic machines. The exercise is also low impact, as it removes all the body weight from the ankles, knees, and hips, but still moves the limbs and joints through a full range of motion from completely extended to completely contracted.
From a human movements point of view the rowing motion ranks up there with swimming as an all body workout involving power and endurance.

Dr. Benjamin Levine, medical researcher working with the National Space Biomedical Research Institute said the following on the Earth & Sky Radio Series:

”We looked to the sporting world and asked, which athletes have the biggest hearts, the densest bones, the biggest muscles. And that was a pretty quick answer: it’s rowers. Levine said that rowing is a very unique exercise. He said it’s like a combination of weight training and endurance training. Plus the blood pressure goes up high with each stroke, so it’s a good, solid workout for the heart. And it appears the rowing regimen does keep the hearts, bones and muscles of astronauts fit, while cutting the time spent on exercise by more than half. In essence, indoor rowing is a very time efficient workout. Since it uses every major muscle group, plus cardiovascular, all in one exercise, you can accomplish more in less time than with any other form of exercise”.

So what makes the WaterRower better than the other rowers on the market?

Well after you have used both as I have then you will feel the difference and “feeling is believing”. However let me back up what I have to say with some solid facts.
Most rowing machines imitate the action or mechanical movement of rowing without the actual feel and therefore don’t convey the natural feeing, dynamic and vigour of a real water experience.
WaterRowers are realistic and replicate the sensation of real rowing with all of the inherent advantages through the use of belts and paddles and a tank which uses water, (obviously) as a resistance medium.
As with all exercise machines there are features and benefits that are logical and those that just appeal to the soul. The WaterRower appeals to both my brain and soul. The combination of the sound of the water together with the unique and instantly appealing motion sold me on the concept, (as opposed to other rowing concepts!).
A review on WaterRower would not be complete without a mention on the looks of the unit. In a drastic shift away from the rather tatty plastic look of many other units WaterRower has stuck with the natural look by combining the water with real and beautifully styled wooden structures.
The WaterRower is available in handcrafted wood in the following options
• Solid Ash
• Cherrywood,
• American walnut.

The wood was chosen due to its marvellous engineering properties, especially its ability to absorb sound and vibration, which enhances the WaterRower’s quiet performance and smooth operation. Ash, like all woods used in the construction of the WaterRower, is a premium hardwood with incredible longevity and dimensional stability. In addition, the wood is harvested from replenishable forests and is hand finished with Danish oil to provide a deep lustre.

As with real rowing, when you paddle faster, the increased drag provides more resistance. When you paddle slower, the resistance is less intense.

By including a “sprag clutch” system WaterRower have eliminated the jerky feeling you would get when engaging a normal rowing machine.

The company has made a point of creating a comfortable and enjoyable exercise experience from the specially designed heel rests that grip your feet at exactly the
right pivot point, to the wooden frame that dampens out any noise or vibration. Even the padded seat seems more comfortable than any other exercise machines I have sat on.

Of course the WaterRower makes an exceptional addition to the home gym or commercial gym environment.

For the home exercise enthusiast space has always been a consideration. With the WaterRower being such a unique and attractive piece of exercise equipment it becomes more of feature rather than something to hide.
So now that you are considering a WaterRower instead of a treadmill or another more pedestrian piece of exercise equipment, the next natural question that you are about to ask is, “with all this money I am saving what else should I buy for my home gym?”
In terms of the Home gym environment and the accompanying budgetary and space considerations I would lean towards adding an item of strength equipment such as a multi gym, functional trainer or even a set of dumbbells and an adjustable bench.
In the commercial health club environment I would be happy offering a WaterRower without other air rowers. I do, however appreciate that in order to satisfy a diverse membership base one must be flexible. If you already have a number of Concept 2 rowers , Johnson Rowers, Matrix Rowers or Fluid Rowers then you could simply add a number of WaterRowers as a variety offering. For the price of a decent home treadmill you could purchase an exercise machine which will last for many years, offer a full body workout and look great as part of your home.

There are no doubt cheaper or cheap rowers available on the market and you will find them at garage sales and auctions all over the county or in the newspaper under the heading, “stuff that nobody wants”.
I will say it once more, don’t ever buy second hand gym equipment and don’t buy the cheapest (nastiest) piece you can find. It will fall apart and you will hate it and yourself every time you try and use it. This is your health and fitness; don’t buy cheap.
