I heard this story on the news this morning and it makes a bit of sense to me, even if I am not a rat. High Fructose Corn Syrup is pretty bad for you anyway and this study seems to show that.

A new UCLA rat study is the first to show how a diet steadily high in fructose slows the brain, hampering memory and learning — and how omega-3 fatty acids can counteract the disruption. The peer-reviewed Journal of Physiology publishes the findings in its May 15 edition.

“Our findings illustrate that what you eat affects how you think,” said Fernando Gomez-Pinilla, a professor of neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and a professor of integrative biology and physiology in the UCLA College of Letters and Science. “Eating a high-fructose diet over the long term alters your brain’s ability to learn and remember information. But adding omega-3 fatty acids to your meals can help minimize the damage.”

While earlier research has revealed how fructose harms the body through its role in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diabetes"rel="nofollow"title="" >diabetes, obesity and fatty liver, this study is the first to uncover how the sweetener influences the brain.

Results of the High Fructose Corn Syrup Rat Study

Even Coke contains high fructose corn syrup

The UCLA team zeroed in on high fructose corn syrup, an inexpensive liquid six times sweeter than cane sugar, that is commonly added to processed foods, including soft drinks, condiments, applesauce and baby food. The average American consumes more than 40 pounds of high-fructose corn syrup per year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. “We’re not talking about naturally occurring fructose in fruits, which also contain important antioxidants,” explained Gomez-Pinilla, who is also a member of UCLA’s Brain Research Institute and Brain Injury Research Center. “We’re concerned about high-fructose corn syrup that is added to manufactured food products as a sweetener and preservative.”

So looking at this study is just another nail in the coffin for high fructose corn syrup which is really a terrible sweetener however cheap it is to produce. The best way to avoid HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) is to avoid pop and sodas and sweetened juices as well as any foods that are highly processed. Remember that because this substance is so sweet and cheap it is a very easy and cheap way to sweeten foods instead of using regular sugar. Also there are studies that show that HFCS will also help cause diabetes and this was one of the real starting points where some scientists say that the obesity issues in the US were caused by.

So what do you think? Are you shocked? This cover of Time magazine is sparking support and outrage all over the country and I guess for good reason. Everyone is a fan of breastfeeding until kids get a bit too old for their comfort.

Why is Breastfeeding Important?

Well first of all lets get to the root of the issue here. I have never seen a case where any study has said anything bad about the effect of breastfeeding on kids or their parents. Not only is breast milk very healthy for babies but it also helps to create that bond between mother and child helping them to protect the baby and to help the mother in the nourishing as well as weight loss aspects of child rearing.

No child can live for any length of time without some kind of milk product and the fact is that the American Academy of Pediatrics says babies should be breastfed exclusively for the first 6 months. Beyond that, the American Academy of Pediatrics encourages breastfeeding until at least 12 months, and longer if both the mother and baby are willing.

Breastfeeding a four year old?

So the real shocking part of this whole story seems to be the picture itself, although I think that breastfeeding just kind of makes a lot of people feel uncomfortable. The woman on the Time Magazine breastfeeding cover is Jamie Lynne Grumet and she is actually standing in defiance while nursing her 3 year old (maybe 4 year old) son standing on this stool.

According to a poll this week 73% of the people who saw the cover felt uncomfortable with it. I am not one of these people. I saw the cover, was initially shocked at the pose, but them looked inside myself to see what was really wrong. My daughter was breastfed until 6 months, my sone was never breastfed, I have no issues with nudity, so the only thing that I think caused me to recoil initially was my own sense of self values in the media. I am sure Time magazine knows this as well.

This is a very important issue I think. Women are encouraged to breastfeed, but never in public, and then expected to stop at 6 months. What is they decide to go longer? Not going to hurt the kid, not going to hurt me. This has to be looked at as a civil right for women, no need for us non-women, non-breast feeders, to be judgemental of how someone wants to wean or not wean their child from the boob.

In the end I think this is just one more way that we need to look at ourselves and decide where our sense of morality is and why. Good for you Jamie Lynne Grumet

There’s no doubt that exercise burns calories. So why has study after study found such modest average weight loss even after subjects follow relatively vigorous, well-designed exercise programs?

The usual answer is that you unwittingly eat more to compensate for your workout. That’s partly true, but it skims over a vital detail: Few of us are “average.” Break down the study results, and you find that exercise is highly effective at melting off pounds for some people, and ineffective for others. Scientists are now teasing out the factors that explain these different responses – and poking holes in weight-loss plans that promise one-size-fits-all success.

[kc_background_pac_2_highlight_1 size="25" color="#000000" align="left"]Why Exercise Changes sometimes Fail[/kc_background_pac_2_highlight_1]

“There’s currently a strong interest in identifying ‘behavioural phenotypes’ within the obese population so that treatments can be more specifically targeted,” says Graham Finlayson, a biological psychologist at the University of Leeds. “This is the case for exercise, food, diet, pharmacologic and surgical approaches.”

Exercise and Weight Loss

The wide variability in response to exercise is shown clearly in the results of a 12-week program of supervised exercise, published in a review co-authored by Dr. Finlayson in the British Journal of Sports Medicine last month. Although the intensity and duration of each workout was the same for all 58 subjects, some lost more than 10 kilograms while others actually gained a small amount of weight – opposite extremes from the average loss of 3.2 kilograms.

I myself think that there is a correlation between food and exercise that is very tight. I have gone through changes where I am very physically active and I eat to compensate for the calorie loss. Keeping a very disciplined eating schedule to conteract any problems with metabolism and Leptin depletion are essential.

Dr. Finlayson and his colleagues suggest a long list of possible reasons for the variation. There are physiological possibilities, like the rate at which food leaves your gut; the production of appetite hormones like leptin and ghrelin; and the extent to which your body relies on fat versus carbohydrate for energy. All of these are affected by exercise and could influence appetite and food intake, though the evidence remains contradictory.

So what have you found in the past. Does your increased workouts help or hinder weight loss. Remember there are a lot of exercise newbies reading this, what would you suggest to them?

There is a lot of concern over the growing rate of childhood obesity today. In the United States, at least one child in every five is overweight or obese. Genetic factors play a role but the primary causes of obesity are consumption of high-calorie foods and inadequate physical activity.

Due to the rising rate of obesity, weight-related diseases are becoming common among children and adolescents. There are many health risks of childhood obesity, including the following.

Health Risks of Childhood Obesity

Type 2 <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diabetes"rel="nofollow"title="" >Diabetes – Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease linked to childhood obesity. An increasing number of overweight children and teenagers suffer from this medical condition. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in three children in the United States will develop diabetes in their lifetime.

High <a href="http://www.webmd.com/hypertension-high-blood-pressure/ss/slideshow-lowering-bp-tips"rel="nofollow"title="" >Blood Pressure – Children who are obese or overweight are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure, which can lead to other health risks such as heart disease.

Cardiovascular Disease – Overweight children often suffer from high cholesterol levels as well as high blood pressure. These two medical conditions are risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Hardening of the arteries or atherosclerosis is linked to high cholesterol levels in the blood, and is the most common cause of heart disease. It can begin as early as childhood in overweight children.

Health Risks of Childhood Obesity

Breathing Problems – Other health risks associated with child obesity are asthma and sleep apnea. A large number of overweight children suffer from asthma. Obese children can also have trouble sleeping as a result of obstructive sleep apnea. This is a serious breathing disorder wherein the sufferer’s breathing is briefly interrupted during sleep. If left untreated, apnea can lead to heart failure.

Gallstones and Liver Problems – Children and teenagers who are obese are likely to have gallstones. Obese children are also at risk of fatty liver disease and liver problems that could lead to cirrhosis.

Orthopedic and Other Complications – Excessive weight bearing down on the body can cause orthopedic and joint problems. Obese children suffer more often from fractures, muscle problems, <a href="http://www.everydayhealth.com/arthritis/index.aspx"rel="nofollow"title="" >arthritis, joint pain and bone deformities.

Metabolic Syndrome – It is estimated that 25% to 40% of overweight children will develop metabolic syndrome that could lead to diabetes and heart ailments. Metabolic syndrome linked to weight problems include high blood pressure, insulin resistance, and abnormal lipid levels.

Future Health Risks – Child obesity carries health risks not only in the present but also in the future. Children and teenagers who are overweight or obese are more likely to become obese adults. Obesity in adults has a direct negative impact on their health and well-being. In addition to increased cardiovascular risk, adults who are obese are more likely to suffer from diabetes and to develop certain forms of cancer.

What You Can Do Now

Childhood obesity is a serious health problem that should be dealt with as early as possible. There are treatment options for obese children, such as diet and gastric bypass, but health professional believe that prevention is the best way to combat childhood obesity. Parents should provide a balanced and healthy diet for their children. They should also set a good example by leading a healthy lifestyle, eating nutritious foods, and encouraging their children to participate in regular physical activities.

Strictly speaking, there is only one causes of childhood obesity, and that is consuming more calories than the body can burn each day. However, there are certain factors that increase the risk of your child becoming obese. It’s important to take the necessary steps to decrease these risk factors in order to avoid health problems that may arise from obesity.

There are many factors that cause obesity in children and adolescents. Oftentimes, these factors work in combination to increase the risk of your child becoming overweight. Below are some of the causes of childhood obesity.

Causes of Childhood Obesity

Environmental Factors – Environmental factors play a huge role in childhood obesity. American families often eat out, and more often than not, they eat fast food that is high in fats and calories but lacking in nutrition. Sugary drinks and energy-dense convenience foods like cookies and chips are readily available while wholesome, healthy foods are less accessible and oftentimes more expensive. Portion sizes are larger than they used to be, so that people tend to eat more without realizing it.

Kids Need Exercise

Children these days do not get enough physical activities. They spend too much time using entertainment media such as television, video games, computers and movies. TV viewing is a major cause of childhood obesity because it discourages physical activity. In addition, it can lead to increased food intake through snacking and eating in front of the TV. Television commercials also encourage children to make unhealthy food choices.

Genetics/Family History – Another factor that can cause childhood obesity is genetics. A child that comes from a family of overweight people is more likely to put on extra weight, too. While genetics plays an important role in childhood obesity, family factors also have a significant impact particularly if these factors include eating too much without getting enough exercise. Dietary and lifestyle habits within the family contribute to childhood obesity.

Socioeconomic Factors – Children from low-income backgrounds, including lower level of education, are more likely to become obese. Healthy eating and exercise is difficult for families with limited time and resources. High-calorie processed foods are often cheaper and more readily available than fresh fruits, vegetables, and other healthy foods. Families with low socioeconomic status may also have limited access to safe recreational places, thus making it difficult to participate in sports and physical activities. However, recent studies into obesity show that the rate of childhood obesity among high- income groups is now on the rise.

Psychological Factors – Some people, including children, are “stress eaters”. They overeat in order to handle stress or deal with negative emotions. There are also people who eat to fight boredom.

Medications – Certain drugs can cause obesity in children, such as steroids and antidepressants. Children who are taking medications for a psychiatric condition or seizure disorder may gain excess weight. These drugs cause weight gain by stimulating the appetite or slowing down the body’s metabolism so that it burns calories more slowly. In some cases, the medication may cause the body to retain water.

The CDC has a great page on their plan over the last few years to try and stop these causes of childhood obesity

Childhood obesity rates are now at alarmingly high levels, with almost one out of five children and adolescents being obese. This health concern does not bode well for society today, as scientists believe that the current generation of children may be the first to have a lifespan shorter than that of their parents. High <a href="http://www.webmd.com/hypertension-high-blood-pressure/ss/slideshow-lowering-bp-tips"rel="nofollow"title="" >blood pressure, breathing problems, and type 2 <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diabetes"rel="nofollow"title="" >diabetes are just a few of the negative effects of childhood obesity.

How is Obesity in Children Measured?

Body mass index is the best method to determine if an individual is obese or overweight. In children, BMI is determined using the child’s height and weight. The child’s weight status is determined using his or her age and sex. The method is different from that used for adults because a child’s body composition varies with age, and between boys and girls.

Health Effects of Childhood Obesity

Obesity in children can have a number of harmful effects. Children who are overweight or obese can suffer from:

High blood pressure

High cholesterol level

Type 2 diabetes

Sleep apnea

Asthma

Dyspepsia or gastro-esophageal reflux (heartburn)

Liver problems

Effects of Childhood Obesity

Many of the diseases mentioned above used to affect adults only, but with the increasing rates of childhood obesity more and more children now suffer from these diseases. Obese children are likely to suffer from type 2 diabetes as a consequence of insulin resistance or insulin deficiency.

Obese children are also likely to have high cholesterol levels and hypertension (high blood pressure). These medical disorders are risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Likewise, obesity can cause breathing problems such as asthma or sleep apnea. Overly obese children and adolescents can also suffer from metabolic disorders, liver disease, gallstones and joint problems.

Psychological and Emotional Effects of Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity can have damaging psychological and emotional effects on children who are at a vulnerable age. Obese children are often teased and bullied by their peers, and can suffer from social discrimination and low self-esteem. As a consequence, they may react by misbehaving or becoming anti-social.

In a society that places great importance on being thin, beautiful and athletic, obese children are often socially ostracized and bullied. They can suffer from anxiety and as a result do poorly in school.

Health Risks in the Future

Obese children are more likely to grow into obese adults in the future. In addition, they can also suffer from weight-related problems much sooner. As a consequence of childhood obesity, people can have a heart attack as early as their 30′s or 40′s. Childhood obesity also leads to diabetes as well as some forms of cancer in adults.

What You Can Do Now

The obesity rate is now at a level where it has become a major contributor to chronic disease and disability worldwide. The level is highest in developed countries, where obesity is now recognized as a grave concern to public health. A healthy and balanced diet can help control obesity. Children must be encouraged to engage in regular exercise and physical activity. The effects of childhood obesity are too serious to be ignored. In severe cases, medical care may be required and treatments such as liposuction or stomach bypass surgery may have to be considered.

For many people knowing how to lose 20 pounds in a month would be a dream. Put that dream right in front of you because I am saying that there are ways that you can lose 20 pounds in a month.

To get started on any weight loss goal is easy but you need a strategy and tactics in place to know how to lose 20 pounds in a month. Your strategy towards any goal is the broad strokes, the big concepts that are important. Here is your weight loss strategy

Increase your resting metabolism
Reduce your calorie intake
Quickly burn calories during cardio and weight workouts

Now that you have a strategy to lose 20 pounds in a month so now you need the tactics that will make it a reality. You need radical changes to lose 5 pounds a week.

How to lose 20 Pounds in a Month

Your tactics are the individual things that will make your dream work out for you.

How to lose 20 pounds - Eating Tactics

Plan your eating the day before – If you plan your eating the night before then you are not going to have to worry about getting into a struggle of eating these crappy foods and instead will know what you are going to eat when.

Eat 5 or 6 small meals a day – This is going to help you to raise your metabolism. When you eat often you are sending a message to your body that you are not going to starve and that you will always have enough to eat.

Have leftovers a lot to make it easier to eat good food – If you make giant helpings of meals then you will have lots of leftovers to choose from. One of the problems that I always hear from people is that they are worried that if they have to eat really often then they will spend their whole life preparing meals. this is just not at all the case.

Eat meals that are small – One thing that drives me crazy is how we allow our bodies to waste food. It is hard to find a steak smaller than 8 ounces in a restaurant but did you know that your body has almost no way for digesting and using more than 4 ounces of that steak?

Eat lots of fiber – Fiber will increase metabolism and make you healthier by cleaning out toxins.

Drink lots of water – Who cares what the so called experts say. Water makes your metabolsim faster and makes you feel great

How to lose 20 pounds - Exercise Tactics

Exercise twice a day – One 20 minutes workout in the morning and another one in the evening.

Do weights once every second day – Getting muscle will help your body burn more fat. The muscle takes a lot of calories to maintain while fat takes nearly none.

Split your cardio workouts between high and low intensity – High intensity to burn a lot of carbs off and low intensity to finish of the fat hanging around

Cardio is 20 minutes of hard cardio – Hard cardio is defined as keeping your heartrate up around 80% of your max. This will raise your metabolism for a long time 12 – 24 hours.

<a href="http://www.prevention.com/fitness/fitness-tips/14-walking-workouts-burn-fat-and-boost-energy"rel="nofollow"title="" >Walking or casual exercise can be an hour long – This is a great way to burn fat as you can exercise low impact by walking for an hour.

Weights should be basic exercises – Basic exercises are things like squats, bench presses, lunges, military presses. These exercises work a lot of muscle groups at once.

Healing between workouts is most important – Now that you are working out it is a good idea to get a lot of rest and sleep so that your body can recover. Your body only recovers when you are sleeping or at least resting.

There are no guarantees of course that you will lose 20 pounds in a month but just look at this plan of attack. Is this different than you are doing now? Are these new lifestyle changes possible for you? It is all up to you to see what radical changes that you can make in your life and what they will lead to. Good luck in your quest and at the very least you now know how to lose 20 pounds in a month.

I have been noticing a lot of magazine covers this week talking about Beyonce and her weight loss after having a baby. Sure Beyonce is a huge pop star so I thought I would look into it and see how she was able to get backin shape again so quickly.

According to eonline she lost her weight the old fashioned way.

Meanwhile, as for her enviable physique, Beyoncé admitted to gaining about 50 pounds during her pregnancy, but says she’s now, nearly four months after Blue’s arrival, just “three to four pounds” away from her prebaby weight. And there’s no secret as to how—just good old-fashioned hard work.

“I lost most of my weight from breast-feeding and I encourage women to do it; It’s just so good for the baby and good for yourself,” she said, noting that she breast-fed Blue for 10 weeks.

From there, she went the old-fashioned route, counting calories and working out “three to four times a week.” That, and “staying away from anything delicious.”

Beyonce and Baby

But as we all know in the past Beyonce has gone for a lot of different types of weight loss. People Magazine on their cover this month called Beyonce “The Most Beautiful Woman on the World” and that is a lot to live up to.

I know that also back just a few years ago Beyonce was a big proponent and supporter of the Master Cleanse, or Lemonade Diet which is a 10-14 day plan where you just drink a maple syrup, lemon, cayenne pepper and water mixture.

Besides the regular diet that she has done over the last little while she also is a very determined fitness fanatic and will spend a lot of time working out to keep that great Beyonce body. She runs up to 6 miles several times a week and does boxing workouts which provide an intensive cardio workout and endurance training, which help her to be able to perform well on tour. Beyonce does full body workouts at the gym, using weights to exercise her shoulders and biceps, body<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weight_training"target="_blank"rel="nofollow"title="" >weight training, such as push ups, sit ups, squats and lunges to work her legs, core and chest.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (Gerd), also known as acid reflux is a condition in which the acid in the stomach is forced up into the esophagus often causing great pain and discomfort. There are several potential causes for this condition including such things as an esophagus that contracts abnormally or a stomach that empties slower than normal. These conditions could be due to a damages stomach and could cause severe damage and burns to the esophagus lining.

Acid Reflux is more prominent and painful when lying down at night. The body is lying down leaving behind all the hard work for the acid of climbing up the esophagus. It can easily creep up and make sleeping nearly impossible.

There are several ways of avoiding the burn of acid reflux. The one that is the most permanent and works most effectively is a change in the way you eat and in fact the way you sleep. To stop or lessen the effects of acid reflux when sleeping you should try to keep your head somewhat elevated. This will make the job of climbing up the esophagus more difficult for the acid thanks to gravity.

Diet and Acid Reflux

Acid Reflux disease

In addition to altering your sleeping positions many find results by changing their diet. There are several food types that seem to aggravate reflux due to a reduction in pressure in the lower esophageal sphincter. These foods include most caffeine, peppermint in any form, many chocolates and alcohol of all types. In addition foods high in fat content should be avoided for reduction of acid reflux symptoms.

In addition to choosing the appropriate foods you should also change your eating schedule. If you are used to a large meal at the end of the day you might consider a smaller meal earlier in the evening. The reason for this is that your body has a chance to move the food from the stomach to be digested thereby eliminating it as a pressure to cause the reflux.

Learning the process of avoiding the burn of acid reflux might take a bit of time but will be well worth the effort. Taking stock in what you eat both at home and when you are out is a vital part of reducing symptoms of acid reflux.

For those suffering from this issue, the symptoms of acid reflux can be debilitating. Understanding how the foods you eat affect your body is the best way to conquer the pain of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease.

The thought of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) for most people brings to mind two men locked in a cage, trying to knock each other out or making the other person submit through painful joint lock or choke. However, MMA is much more than that. For example, it is a great way to lose weight and get fit. Joe Riggs, a former Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) fighter, started MMA training weighing almost 300 pounds. He made a name for himself in the UFC fighting at 170 pounds. He lost all of that weight through MMA training.

MMA Training

There are three main martial arts involved in MMA:
1. Muay Thai kickboxing
2. Wrestling
3. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)

MMA schools typically offer courses in the individual disciplines with a combined MMA class for those who are more serious and considering actually engaging in an actual MMA fight. Because of the skill level and physical conditioning required to fight MMA, most schools will not let people train Mixed Martial Arts until they have achieved a proven ability in at least one of these three arts.

Workouts

The workout for any of these arts is intense. Students can expect a warm-up that includes a series of body-weight exercises, some with a partner and some without, that prepare the body for what it is about to face. After the warm-up comes a technique portion where the instructor teaches a skill followed by the students practicing, or drilling, the technique until they have it down. The technique portion of the class is followed by live drilling that allows the student to practice that technique against a fully resisting partner. Students who wish to focus only on the technique and not engage in the live drilling can elect to do that instead.

Improved Fitness

Lose Weight With MMA Training

People who train MMA notice an improved level of conditioning pretty quickly. They are learning not only how to move their own bodies in ways that they never have before but they are learning to physically manipulate other people as well. These classes leave the individual exhausted, exhilarated and ready to come back for more. MMA students will lose weight and stay fit regardless of whether they actually decide to engage in an MMA fight or not. For those interested in fighting, understand that good MMA trainers will not let their students fight until they are capable of defending themselves in the cage.

Robbin Grey is a freelance writer who loves writing about MMA and other various martial art styles. Robbin is currently writing for the MMA Zone where she specializes in combining MMA training with health and fitness.

No matter what they say losing weight is not easy we are all looking for tricks to help lose weight. A weight loss program will succeed only if you are 100% committed to your goal and are willing to work hard to get rid of your excess pounds. Fortunately, there are a few simple tricks to lose weight that will make the task easier. With a few simple changes, you can get the ball rolling and start losing weight.

Tricks to Help Lose Weight - Change What You Eat

You are what you eat. If you continue eating high-calorie, high-fat foods, you will never have that lean and trim body you have always wanted. A few simple changes in the food you eat can help you shed pounds.

Reduce your consumption of red meat. Burgers and steaks are high in calories and cholesterol. Instead of red meat, build your meals around chicken, lean pork, and fish. The method of preparation also counts. Avoid deep-fried meats or preparation methods that call for creamy, high-calories sauces. Opt for grilling, steaming, or baking.

Eliminate fried foods. Make healthier choices by grilling, roasting, boiling, or baking to reduce the amount of fat in your foods.

Keep your kitchen stocked with herbs and spices to boost flavor without adding calories.

If you must eat fast foods, choose wisely. Have a grilled chicken sandwich and a salad on the side. Watch the dressing, as it could add unwanted calories.

Start with soup or salad. A fresh salad with vinaigrette dressing or a broth-based soup can help curb your hunger and control portion sizes.

Have some fruit for dessert instead of cake, cookies or ice cream. The natural sugar in fruits will satisfying your craving for sweets while adding fiber, vitamins and minerals to your diet. In time, you’ll learn to forgo high-calorie desserts and reach for healthier fruits instead.

Changing your eating will make a huge difference to how your body metabolizes the food as well as storing fat. You want to make sure that your blood sugar does not fluctuate and and by using these tricks to help lose weight by evening out your diet this will happen. And finally these changes will help you to not be hungry all day or bloated after big meals.

Tricks to Help Lose Weight - Change What You Drink

Many people are surprised to learn that calories also lurk in beverages and drinks. Cutting back on liquid calories can make a big difference in your weight loss plan. Here are a few tricks to reduce calories in your drinks and help you lose weight.

Tricks to Help Lose Weight

Put a ban on soda. Eight ounces of regular Coca Cola contains approximately 97 calories. If you drink several glasses of soda every day, you could easily rack up 500 calories or more of empty calories.

Ditch that diet drink. If you think switching to a diet drink is a smart move, think again. Sugar-free drinks may not help you lose weight after all. Apart from the potential health hazard of artificial sweeteners, diet drinks increase your cravings for sweet foods and can make you binge on high-calorie, sugar-laden foods.

Cut down on alcoholic beverages. They are high in calories and can give you a beer belly. Reduce or eliminate your alcohol consumption.

Drink water. When you are thirsty, drink plenty of water. It quenches your thirst, helps eliminate toxins and waste products in the body, and contributes to overall health. Best of all, it’s calorie-free.

The most important tricks to help lose weight is not exercise but instead what you eat and drink. When changing your diet you need to make sure that you make changes over time and you will find as you make changes that your metabolism will increase all the time.

At the same time your body will not change your leptin levels which would cause your body to start storing more fat. Using all of these eating and drinking tricks to help lose weight should help you to lose weight fast.

It is important to maintain the proper weight if you want to be healthy. People who are overweight are prone to many diseases including high <a href="http://www.webmd.com/hypertension-high-blood-pressure/ss/slideshow-lowering-bp-tips"rel="nofollow"title="" >blood pressure, heart disease and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diabetes"rel="nofollow"title="" >diabetes. Losing weight does not have to be difficult. There are many simple ways to lose weight quick and help you shed unwanted pounds.

Before starting a weight loss program, you have to set your goals and come up with a game plan. Decide how many pounds you want to lose and how long it will take to reach your goal. A lot of people find it hard to begin a weight loss program, so it’s best to start with easy and simple ways to lose weight quick.

How to Lose Weight Quick

Lose Weight Quick

1. Eat Wholesome Foods – The best way to lose weight is to avoid greasy, high-calorie junk food and consume only wholesome foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, whole grains and nuts should make up the bulk of your diet. Foods that contain high amounts of fiber make you feel full longer but have fewer calories. Eating the right foods is a simple way to lose weight fast.

2. Avoid Carbonated Drinks – Soft drinks are high in sugar and calories but contribute very little nourishment to the body. Drink water instead of carbonated drinks. You need 10 to 12 glasses of water every day for your body to function at its best. If you have a craving for food at odd hours of the day, try drinking a glass of water. You may mistakenly think you are hungry when in fact you are only thirsty. Drinking water instead of soft drinks will help you consume fewer calories.

3. Control Your Portions – Portion control is a simple yet often-neglected way to lose weight quick. If you fail to control portion size, you may be eating more than you should. Many people find it too cumbersome to measure food portions every time they eat, but with practice you should be able estimate serving sizes just by looking at the food.

4. Eat Smaller Meals More Frequently – A simple way to lose weight quick is to divide your meals and have 5 or 6 small meals instead of 3 big ones a day. Eating more frequently helps maintain your metabolism at a high level and burns more calories.

5. Keep A Food Diary – Carry a small notebook everywhere you go and make a record of the foods you eat, including water. Be sure to include the portion size of each food. This will give you an idea of many calories you consume in a day. Studies have shown that people who keep a food diary wind up eating up to 15% fewer calories than those who don’t.

6. Exercise – A weight loss program is not complete without exercise. The most effective way to lose weight quickly is to exercise regularly. Your exercise regimen should include both cardiovascular exercise and strength training. Cardiovascular exercise burns fat while strength training helps build muscle mass. Muscles are important for weight loss because they require more calories to maintain than fat does, thereby increasing your metabolism.

Using these six methods are all it takes to lose weight quick. What is critical is to take one idea at a time and add one or more small changes to your lifestyle and you will find that you can in fact make these changes. Each week you add a few little changes and within a month or two you will find that your lifestyle has radically changed.

Making changes over time, I believe, is really the critical part of helping your to lose weight quick.

Healthy food choices are the critical part to lose weight. Many people think that if you want to lose weight all you have to do is reduce the amount of food you eat. While this may be true to some extent, it’s more important to remember that the types of foods you eat can make a huge difference in your weight loss program. You have to eat healthy to lose weight. In other words, you must learn how to make healthy food choices to get the right nutrition in the right amounts.

The truth about weight loss is this: you can lose weight only if you burn more calories than you consume. You can do this by eating less, exercising more, or doing both. Health experts recommend a combination of a healthy diet and exercise to lose weight. A good weight loss plan allows you to eat healthy to lose weight.

Make a Lifestyle Change

Many people become overweight as a result of making the wrong food choices. Sad to say, this is because our way of life makes it easier to snack on doughnuts and cookies instead of fresh fruits. The refined carbohydrates in cakes, white bread, cookies, candies and biscuits quickly add pounds to the waistline and belly. The taste buds of the typical American are attuned to fried foods, chips, and junk food. Clearly, a conscious effort must be exerted to get people on the right track when it comes to making healthier food choices.

Health Food Choices

People who want to lose weight often go on all sorts of diets, hoping that they will eventually find one that will help them shed fat and keep the extra pounds off permanently. It’s time people realize that fad diets do not work for long-term weight loss. You have to make a lifestyle change and learn to eat healthy if you want to lose extra weight and keep it from coming back.

Healthy Food Choices for Weight Loss

People have to eat but making the wrong food choices can lead to obesity or weight problems and illness. If you want to lose weight, eat the following healthy foods:

Fruits

Vegetables

Lean meats

Fish

Whole grain cereals

Nuts and seeds

Milk products

Eggs

A healthy diet for weight loss should also include plenty of water.

How to Eat Healthy to Lose Weight

The smartest way to lose weight is to choose healthy foods that you already have in your normal daily diet. Make this the starting point for your new and healthy eating habits. Eating familiar foods helps dispel the idea that you are on a diet. This is very important if you are trying to lose weight because being on a diet implies that it will end some day. When you stop your diet, you may gain back the weight you lost.

By changing your eating habits and learning to eat healthy, you’ll be able to lose weight and keep it off for good. Reduce your consumption of refined carbohydrates and watch what you add to your food. Avoid creamy sauces, high-calorie salad dressings, and deep fried foods. Keep in mind that it’s possible to make healthy food choices even at a fast food restaurant.

If you’re reading this right now, that means one thing: you’re on a mission to accelerate fat loss and get rid of your boring diet.

Metabolic Cooking - Karine Losier and Dave Ruel

You’ve been there and done that. You’ve tried other diets in the past and have come to see less than stellar results, likely despite some of your best efforts.

You’re also a busy person and you don’t have time to spend hours in the kitchen to prepare your meals everyday.

Who is Metabolic Cooking?

Well Karine Losier and Dave Ruel have teamed up to come up with 250 recipes that are all designed not just to fuel your body but also to crank up your metabolism so that you can lose weight while eating the best foods for your body.

Dave is one of the most respected and trusted fitness cooks in North America.

Dave has a large background in helping others achieve their goals, be it fat loss or muscle building, with his uncomplicated and revolutionary recipes and nutrition approach. Over the past few years, he has helped thousands of people reaching their goals through a successful fat burning diet.

Well, the truth is that Karine also has a Masters degree in psychology and has had the opportunity to deal with a lot of people with weight problems and who struggle to lose body fat.

That makes her fully aware of all the psychological struggles that people face with regards to their eating habits and diets, thus she know the importance of good nutrition that tastes great, uses top fat burning foods, and serves to motivate people to stick with their diet by challenging their commonly held psychological beliefs.

Exercise helps smokers quit and remain smokefree, according to new data presented today at the World Congress of Cardiology. Moreover, exercise increases life expectancy in smokers and non-smokers alike.

The study of 434 190 people who went through medical examination program at a private fee-paying company between 1996 and 2008 in Taiwan revealed that active smokers (those engaged in at least moderate activity) were 55% more likely to quit smoking that those that were inactive. Furthermore, these active smokers were 43% less likely to relapse than smokers that were inactive.

Physical activity among these subjects was also shown to increase life expectancy, even among smokers. Smokers that participated in physical activity had an increased life expectancy of 3.7 years and a reduction in all-cause mortality of 23%– equivalent to levels achieved by ex-smokers with low activity levels.

Results of Study – exercise helps smokers quit

The results of this study shows that exercise helps smokers quit smoking also demonstrated that active ex-smokers increased their life expectancy by 5.6 years and reduced their all-cause mortality by 43%– equivalent to the levels seen in inactive non-smokers.

“Exercise helps smokers quit and quitting smoking has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of developing CVD and that must be the goal of all smokers,” said Dr C.P. Wen, National Health Research Institute, Taiwan. “If smokers can continue to exercise, not only they can increase the quit rate, but also they can reduce their mortality for all cause and for CVD in the long run.”

Exercise Helps Smokers Quit

The prospective study of 434,190 individuals in Taiwan was conducted over a period of 12 years. Leisure time physical activity of each individual was grouped into 1) Inactive, 2) Low active (15 minute/day), and 3) Active (30 minute/day).

Tobacco use and cardiovascular disease

Smoking is one of the major causes of CVD and directly responsible for one-tenth of all CVD worldwide. Smokers are almost twice as likely to have a heart attack as people who have never smoked. Moreover, second-hand smoke exposure is responsible for 600 000 deaths every year.

Article from Health 24

A person can substantially lower their CVD risk by stopping smoking. Within five years of becoming a non-smoker, a person’s risk of having heart attack is halved and within 15 years the risk of developing CVD becomes nearly the same of someone who has never smoked. Get out and exercise, exercise helps smokers quit.

This last couple of weeks I feel are all about me but I am hoping that you can learn from my problems.

We all deal with problems and setbacks when we are getting fit or healthier. Usually this is because we are beating our body into changing one way or the other. How you deal with your injury or setback will directly affect how you move forward afterwards.

Last week I decided that I was going to really pick it up trying to get in the best shape of my life so I could dominate in street hockey next week. I did this by doing lots of cardio, running, riding, rowing, elliptical trainer. But the trouble is that I have been cardio-lazy all winter while doing speed style weight workouts, you know like turbulence training.

Well my body got really mad at that straight out cardio and I seem to have wrecked my back. This happens lots to people and when it happens to you how do you react?

Well the best way to react is to heal and work around the injury. Ice and heat alternating a few times a day, aspirin for the pain and continue trying to exercise.

Dealing with Setbacks

When eating this happens a lot. You cut your eating and change your diet and in your head you are struggling, starving, and feel like you are doing without. Then suddenly you find a cake and eat it.

What do you do next? Well I would have to ask why you are starving yourself and depriving? My best idea is to regroup after eating that cake and try to decide what was wrong. Plan what you will do. I will tell you right now that just by drinking more water, spacing out your eating to 6 smaller meals, and cutting out all the bread, potatoes, and rice from your diet will make a huge difference.

So think back, how do you tend to react to setbacks? I know this is always a process that you have to look back at your past and see how you can adjust.

I always used to be disappointed in myself that I did not have unlimited willpower until I realized that I was setting far too high a standard for myself. You should look at yourself the same way, recognize your limitations and don’t try to be some kind of hero but just always move forward in your dreams and goals.

Just made me a green detox smoothie. This thing tastes great and is really easy to make. I used a handful of washed kale, half a can of pinapple, one banana, and one peeled orange.

Green Detox Smoothie

Although this tastes think and great there is a change I will make next time and that is to freeze the pineapple and the banana or maybe use frozen oranges. The consistency is good but it is not as cold as I would have liked. Sadly my daughter does not like bananas or pineapples so this was not a green detox smoothie for her but it is for me.

Benefits of a Green Detox Smoothie

Kale is super high in Vitamin K (1300% of a daily amount), Vitamin A, and Vitamin C as well as having a lot of digestive abilities.

Pineapple of course is great for helping digestion because it cantains Bromelain. as well as being high in Vitamin C and Manganese, and has many Anti-Inflammatory Benefits.

Add to this the antioxidants in both bananas and oranges and you can see this green detox smoothie really packs a punch all in one big glass.

While regular exercise and a healthy diet is recognized as the ideal way to maintain a normal weight, there are some individuals for whom weight loss surgery or bariatric surgery is the only option remaining.

People who are morbidly obese and have tried and failed to lose weight using conventional methods are turning to surgical weight loss as a solution. Bariatric surgery is recommended only for people with severe obesity; that is, with a body mass index above 40.

Weight loss surgery is also offered to people with BMI between 35 and 40 if they also suffer from obesity-related health problems such as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diabetes"rel="nofollow"title="" >diabetes or sleep apnea.

Surgical Weight Loss Options

When diet, exercise or weight loss medications are not enough to reach and maintain a healthy weight, people who suffer from severe obesity can resort to a number of surgical options for weight loss:

Surgical Weight Loss

Gastric Bypass. A gastric bypass allows you to lose weight in two ways: first, by limiting the amount of food ingested and second, by reducing the amount of nutrients you absorb from your food. This is done by creating a smaller stomach pouch which is attached to the lower part of the small intestine. The smaller stomach holds less food so you feel full sooner. Also, fewer calories are absorbed because the food bypasses a portion of the stomach and small intestine.

Lap Banding. This surgical weight loss procedure uses an adjustable band inserted in the stomach to give a feeling of fullness and limit the amount of food consumed. The lap band can be tailor-made for the patient. It is also adjustable after surgery so that you can eat more or less food as needed.

Gastric sleeve. This type of stomach reduction surgery is one of the newer options for surgical weight loss. It makes the stomach smaller by removing up to 85% of the stomach, leaving only a narrow, banana-shaped tube. With a smaller stomach, you will feel full even with less food. This weight loss surgical procedure is safer compared to gastric bypass because it does not rearrange the digestive anatomy. It may also be safer than lap banding since no foreign objects are introduced into the digestive system.

Benefits of Surgical Weight Loss

Quick and effective weight loss. Most patients start to lose weight immediately following surgery. In general, patients lose weight rapidly within 6 months to one year. Weight loss often continues until two years after the surgical procedure., and few patients regain it.

Improved health conditions. A number of studies found that weight loss surgery can return blood sugar levels to normal in patients with type 2 diabetes. There is also an improvement in obesity-related health conditions such as sleep apnea and high <a href="http://www.webmd.com/hypertension-high-blood-pressure/ss/slideshow-lowering-bp-tips"rel="nofollow"title="" >blood pressure.

Psychosocial adjustment. As patients reach a more normal weight, their self-esteem and self-image also improve and they are better able to function in society.

Risks of Surgical Weight Loss

Side effects. Patients may experience vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, flatulence, and dizziness.

Nutritional deficiencies. Surgical weight loss may be accompanied by nutritional deficiencies including anemia and osteoporosis.

Complications. After weight loss surgery, some patients may suffer from complications such as abdominal hernias, infections, gallstones, or breakdown of the staple line used to make the stomach smaller.

Lifestyle changes. Bariatric surgery often requires permanent lifestyle changes for significant and lasting weight loss.

There are several options for weight loss or bariatric surgery and one of them is gastric sleeve weight loss surgery. This type of surgery is often recommended for patients with a BMI higher than 40. Patients who are extremely obese can undergo vertical sleeve gastrectomy, as it is also called, to allow them to reach a safer weight, after which they can have another bariatric surgery such as gastric bypass. A gastric sleeve operation is done laparoscopically or using small incisions, removing up to 85% of the stomach to reduce food intake.

How Gastric Sleeve Weight Loss Surgery Works

Using small incisions, the bariatric surgeon removes two-thirds or up to 85% of the patient’s stomach, so that the remaining stomach is in the shape of a tube or banana. Staples can be used to create a smaller stomach, which typically has a capacity of about 200 ml. With a smaller stomach, the patient can take in only small quantities of food.

Who is a Good Candidate for Gastric Sleeve Weight Loss Surgery?

Gastric Sleeve Weight Loss Surgery

Although the procedure is relatively new, gastric sleeve surgery is now one of the recommended weight loss procedures for patients with BMI higher than 40. The procedure can also be offered to individuals with BMI between 35 and 39 who have obesity-related health disorders such as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diabetes"rel="nofollow"title="" >diabetes and high <a href="http://www.webmd.com/hypertension-high-blood-pressure/ss/slideshow-lowering-bp-tips"rel="nofollow"title="" >blood pressure. It can also be offered to those who find it difficult or impossible to make the follow-up visits required by a procedure like gastric banding, which leaves a foreign object in the patient’s digestive system.

How Effective is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

Most patients who have gastric sleeve surgery experience a weight loss of 50% to 80% of their body weight within 6 months to one year after surgery. Within two years, patients can lose an average of 60% of excess weight. One of the benefits of this bariatric procedure is that patients experience an improvement in blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Patients with diabetes and sleep apnea also show an improvement in their condition.

Comparison of Gastric Sleeve and Other Weight Loss Procedures

Unlike gastric bypass procedure, gastric sleeve surgery allows normal food digestion and absorption of nutrients, yet weight loss is about the same as that experienced by gastric bypass patients. In addition, the procedure is not as risky as a gastric bypass.

Gastric sleeve patients are also able to lose weight more quickly than those who have gastric band surgery. Being a relatively new procedure, however, there is limited data on long-term weight loss with gastric sleeve surgery compared to other procedures like gastric bypass.

Successful Weight Loss with Gastric Sleeve

People who have gastric sleeve surgery must make certain lifestyle changes in order to continue supporting weight loss. It’s true that the procedure creates a smaller stomach and forces you to eat less, but you will still have to exercise and eat a sensible diet in order to remain healthy and continue losing excess weight. Eating larger amounts of food can gradually stretch the stomach and make it bigger, thereby negating the effects of the weight loss procedure. Patients must commit to a healthy lifestyle and good eating habits for gastric sleeve weight loss surgery to be successful.
