It is a specific kind of discomfort that originates from the sciatic nerve, the largest and thickest nerve in your body, in the lower lumbar and sacral region. Imagine a pain that then travels, through your buttocks, and down one of your legs and even down to your calf or foot – that&#8217;s typical of sciatic pain or sciatica. It is important to note these symptoms may be caused from other similar conditions originating in the lower back region, and therefore should be fully diagnosed before treatment commences. Interestingly, as many as 40% of people will experience sciatica at some point in their lives, with the likelihood increasing as we age​​.</p>

<p>We all have been there before.&nbsp;</p>



<p>You look at the clock and you find yourself 3 hours deep into your work.</p>



<p>Your neck is feeling stiff as hell and you go to stand up and your back is giving you grief.&nbsp;</p>



<p>You know you need to be proactive about this and something needs to be done about it. Otherwise you going to end up with a long term issue that is going to take hours of therapy to get rid off.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What to do about it?</h3>



<p>There are few things to look at here. Your desk setup is definitely to be looked at and we will revisit that later.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The other thing is actually taking breaks and moving a little. Research says that you need to be taking frequent breaks in order to avoid niggles and pain.</p>



<p>We are talking <strong>every 40 minutes</strong>. And only <strong>2 minutes </strong>of break can help with pain but if you can do 5-10 minutes even better.</p>



<p>Your question now should be, how do I spend my 2-5 minutes for the best result?&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>Movement!</strong></p>



<p>It can be any movement, but if you can do some well thought out stretches that would be even better.</p>



<p>We thought rather than explaining the stretches with words or just putting pictures we would record it for you.&nbsp;</p>



<p>So here are 3 different types of stretches that you can do right at home or at your desk at work.</p>

<p>Ideally you want to do this every 40 minutes or so. However even if you perform this once per day it is better than nothing…</p>



<p>Imagine how your body is going to feel if you do this consistently.&nbsp;</p>



<p>If you do 5 minutes per day we are talking about 10 hours of stretching over a 3 month period.</p>



<p>If you ask me I would be doing that 5 minute investment over hundreds of dollars for physiotherapy appointments.</p>

<p>A study by Neric et al. (2008) aimed to evaluate the effect of active recovery with electrical stimulation compared to submaximal swimming recovery and passive resting recovery following sprint swimming. The high-intensity nature of sprint swimming leads to elevated blood lactate, a substance that is a byproduct of glucose utilization by muscle cells. Active exercise recovery has been shown to lower lactate faster than passive resting recovery, however, may not always be practical.</p>



<p>Within the context of competitive swimming, it is possible that an athlete will complete two or more intense events separated by no more than 30 minutes and will therefore be unable to sufficiently recover before the next event. There is concern that elevated muscle and blood lactate levels after one event, if not reduced to near resting levels before the next event, may negatively affect subsequent performance. During competitive swimming performances, the preference would be to use a swimming recovery or warm-down between events. However, there are instances where there is no pool available for a sufficient swimming recovery, so alternative recovery treatments become important.</p>

<p>The study examined 30 competitive swimmers and blood lactate levels were tested before and immediately after a 200-yard swimming sprint, as well as after 10 minutes (‘mid-recovery’) and 20 minutes (‘post-recovery) of recovery (either rest, active recovery or electrical stimulation.</p>



<p>Submaximal swimming (active recovery) proved to be most effective at lowering blood lactate, however, electrical muscle stimulation also produced significantly better lactate reduction compared to resting recovery after 20 minutes. The study concluded that electrical muscle stimulation shows promise as an alternate recovery treatment for the purpose of lowering blood lactate, such as in situations in which the athlete has limited access to active recovery facilities (e.g. pool), is physically or psychologically exhausted and not motivated to continue to exercise, or simply seeks an alternate recovery treatment.</p>

<p>Gait is a person’s pattern of walking. Although we often take it for granted, gait is a very complex activity. After a stroke, or with conditions such as Parkinson’s disease or Multiple Sclerosis, a person’s gait pattern may be altered and become abnormal due to their functional limitations and impairments. The resulting gait pattern is unique to that person’s injury/illness and is often a combination of new compensatory movement patterns and movement deviations.</p>



<p>Gait training often becomes a major focus in treatment in order to restore or maximise their walking ability and minimise their risk of falls, especially as risk of falls is increased greatly in people with these conditions. Treatment can focus on improving ambulation efficiency, timing, technique, ability to negotiate obstacles and turns, speed and endurance, as well as building strength, dynamic balance and safety awareness.</p>

<p><strong>Diabetes mellitus</strong> is a disease that affects 1 in 10 adults (over 500 million, worldwide) with 90–95% affected by Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Frighteningly, one in two adults with diabetes is undiagnosed. </p>



<p>Our mission is to help people avoid developing T2DM or help them manage it. This is why we wanted to raise some awareness and help you get started with some simple tips and tricks.</p>



<p>T2DM is a chronic condition in which the body becomes resistant to the effects of the hormone insulin and over time loses the capacity to produce insulin in the pancreas. As a result, blood glucose levels become elevated which can have very serious adverse health effects. Although there are strong genetic and family-related, non-modifiable risk factors involved in its development, there are also a number of modifiable lifestyle risk factors that can be controlled by the choices we make.</p>



<p>Obesity and physical inactivity play critical roles in the development of T2DM. The current Australian guidelines recommend that people with Type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes accumulate a minimum of 210 min per week of moderate-intensity exercise or 125 min of vigorous-intensity exercise consisting of aerobic and resistance exercise. Resistance exercises focusing on major muscle groups should be performed two to three times a week. Increased skeletal muscle glucose uptake and insulin sensitivity can be elevated up to 24 hours or longer following exercise. Make sure you consult with your doctor if you haven’t done exercise in a while and you are planning to embark on some more vigorous exercise.</p>

<p><strong>How to get started? </strong></p>



<p>You can simply get a start by walking for 30 minutes per day. That will add up to the 210 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity. As you get more confident you can increase the speed and intensity of the walk or maybe even add other aerobic exercises such as using steps or maybe even cardio machines if you have access to them.&nbsp;</p>
