I've been traveling like a crazy mama, enjoying the summer swimming with children, celebrating holidays and birthdays, and neglecting this blog. So for those of my faithful followers I will post until Wednesday of this week and then be out of town for yet another week. I will resume my blog updates when I return. School will be close to starting and I will be on more of a schedule than the wonderful days of summer allow.

On to the motivation for staying FIT...
Sometime when people are trying to stay FIT it is at the forefront of their mind AT ALL TIMES. This can drive a person to eat unhealthy because of the stress it causes them. Take a step back and relax. When it is time to eat, make it healthy. Exercise daily and make it count. Do those things and the rest of the time put it out of your mind and go through your day. Being FIT is a lifestyle, but it doesn't have to be metally all consuming. Planning is a great way to keep it that way. Plan your meals, snacks, drink lots and lots of water each day, exercise daily. There's time for other things in between all of that like work and play. Be FIT, stay FIT, and have time and energy for so much more.

GOAL: Keep things simple. Plan simple, healthy meals. Set aside time each day for exercise. The rest of the time do what you need/want to. It can be a challenge but find the "balance" that's right for you.

Whatever happened to the spunky, peppy workouts from the 80's? Now it's hardcore train until you die. Not that it's bad, it just felt great to get a good laugh in during my workout. I'm now feeling Totally Firm thanks to Denise.

When was the last time you dug out those workout tapes? I still have a few, some have gone to D.I. or Goodwill, but the classics remain.

GOAL: Find an oldie but a goodie today and feel the burn, get a good laugh in, and feel energized. If you don't have one I bet your local library does!
The question about whether or not the shoes work is your call. USA Today does a great job exploring the myths and truths about the shoe. After reading reviews about the different toning shoes, I would say the consumer consensus is mixed. Some say they feel like they did just work out after taking them off at the end of a day. Others say they just like them and don't notice any "toning" going on.

I have never tried a toning shoe and have never believed in the marketing ploy to keep people out of a gym or other type of workout---we all know that just does not work!
In the article one women said she was walking, rolled funny and sprained her ankle within 20 minutes of wearing the shoe. I would submit that this can happen in any shoe and is not "toning" shoe specific.

Bottom line (in my opinion): don't trade in your gym membership for a pair of these shoes.

This morning I woke up at 5:30AM to head on over to the pool to swim some laps. I checked the weather before I left, just because. It said 81 degrees and an ozone health warning was in effect. I opted to change back out of my swimsuit and jump back into bed and read in peace and quiet as working out in filth is not exactly a good idea. It worked until I fell back asleep. RATS!!! I don't like it when that happens.

Ever have those mornings when you have great intentions and plans only to get swept away into other things? Here's what I did and you could try it to:
I had plans with my kids to go to the summer movie. So I don't shower, throw on something that will look like I tried to put myself together, and come home and go straight into the workout clothes with a workout routine already in mind. Still get in a great workout and not throwing in the towel because it didn't work out the first time.

Find something that works for you if the first attempt and getting in a good workout fails. Maybe it won't happen until 9PM, the point is, make the time and there will be the time.

On to the article: Seriously disgusting sounding food. Watch out for those things when you are on the road this summer! Take along some healthy homemade car snacks like granola or applesauce muffins. Nuts and a big bottle of water are also good options...better than the gas station stops!

Either way, it can be hard to get outside and do some cardio when it's mega degrees outside. No fear, pool time is here! The pool can give you a fantastic workout.

Over at one of my favorite ever sites for everything fitness: Fitness Magazine, they have pool workouts for beginner, intermediate, and advanced. You'll love it!

As I've said before, I don't own a gym membership, so I have to be very creative when it comes to FITting it in and knowing that I got a great workout. My community I live in has a pool they allow for lane swimming from 6AM-8AM. It's a great way to start your day feeling refreshed and energized to run around crazy with the kids all day spending quality time with them during these summer months.

Get your pool workout on! Let me know if you have a pool workout that you love to do. I'll probably try it!

GOAL: At least once this summer do a pool workout. So for my post today it's going to be about FITting it in while on vacation.

My vacation consisted of swimming, camping, canyoneering, hiking, walking at the zoo/museum, and running around having all sorts of fun with family we don't get to see very often. It was a tough trip to pack for with all of those activities going on.

When you go on vacation this summer:
* Do something to keep you moving for at least 30 minutes everyday
* Keep careful track of what you are eating. Don't go overboard. Just because you are on vacation it does not mean to indulge in foods you wouldn't at home. Keep you meals as close to your home meals as possible.
* Get the rest of your vacation family and friends to do something active everyday as well.

I'm so glad to be back and can't wait to keep the information coming to you!

GOAL TODAY: 30 push-ups, heart rate up for at least 30 minutes, and 3 sets of 10 dumbell curls with 3-5 pound hand weights.

One article I wanted to share with you was about the philosphies of Chris Freytag. She is the woman behind Motivating Bodies. She has an impressive background with many books under her belt and is certified in just about everything fitness. (My dream!!!)

I thought I'd share with you her 3 C's to "Real Results"
1. Commitment: "Let your loved ones know what you are going to do so they can help you and encourage you." (My comment: How many times have I written about that one on this blog? I have back-up now!)

2. Convenience: "You have to find a program that is convenient...It has to be close by. It has to be easy for you to get there and do it. It has to be something you kind of like or maybe a friend goes with you." (My comment: For this time in my life I am motivated in my home without a gym membership. A full cardio workout is doable, but you have to be creative. I do get strength training in daily. It is not necessary to have a gym, but you have to be motivated in the comfort of your home to get moving while you're there!)

3. Consistency: "You ahve to do it all the time. You can't just work out once every two months and expect a change. That's just common sense..." (My comment: This is true. Consistency is key. Remember my post on getting back on the bandwagon?)

You can buy back issues from Success Magazine. I would recommend this one. Filled with lots of motivation to have a healthy, FIT lifestyle. You won't regret making time for FITness and good nutrition!

(What package isn't anticipation worthy, right?) Well this package was one of those I check the door just to make sure I didn't miss anything. THAT kind of package!

In it was the Distance Knee Pant that LUCY sent me. Remember them from this post? This running knee pant comes out the last week of June- this month. This pant is a runners dream. Just wearing the pant around the house when I got them I really felt like I could run farther. (You think I'm joking, but you would be wrong.) Seriously, there is not bulk behind the knee to irritate it which you might expect with a knee pant. Instead it has a breathable mesh material that stays put. A nifty little pocket for your iPod or a gel shot is sewn on the back of the pant-great feature! I also am conscious of sun damage and this pant has an SPF 30+.

This knee pant feels weightless on your body and looks stylish, too. I love the slightly gathered material on the sides of the knee and hip. It makes it look like you have some room in there! The colors of the pant sent to me are navy blue with hot pink stitching. There is also a geometric pattern just below the waist in pinks and blues. A stylish pant and great product soon to come out by LUCY! Try as I might, I could not find anything negative to say about the Distance Knee Pant by LUCY.

I will post a picture of me in the knee pants shortly. Nothing like a great pair of pants to keep you motivated to get your workouts done!

This week it's all about finding a buddy or a form of "buddy" to keep one another revved up. Having some sort of accountability system will keep you honest with yourself and will keep you wanting to show results to that buddy. Below are a list of ways to keep you motivated using the buddy system.

*workout with a friend/personal trainer
*join an on-line forum: Jillian Michaels, My Fitness Pal, or start a conversation on my Twitter page or Facebook page
*join a weight loss "club": weight watchers
*get your significant other to join in with you. I find that to be fun and entertaining and motivating.
*tell everyone you know about your goals-then you'll HAVE to stick to them!

Using this type of motivation is good for you and you can also be the one to motivate others when they need a pick-me-up.

Enjoy your week of working out and accomplishing goals!

Much needed and much loved! We went out hiking and enjoyed the beautiful weather, surroundings, and fresh air.

I'm a huge fan of switching up workouts and I rip out workouts from Fitness Magazine and Health Magazine. Then I go through them and choose which workout I'm going to do that day. I have everything from full body strength, targeted areas for strength, and numerous cardio workouts. Switching up a routine will get you motivated to keep moving. I've started a different strength workout that I'm going to do for one month. I'll add some variations if my interest starts waning.

You can check out the workout here. Maybe you want to jump on board, too! Sign up and they'll send you a new workout every Monday. Awesome deal, huh?!

Happy working out.

Don't let one binge day ruin the next one. It causes a downward spiral. Re-committ that night and the next morning.

Some steps to stop at ONE DAY ONLY:
1. Fill up your favorite water bottle (everyone should have a favorite for this purpose!) with ice and water. Place it next to your bed as you go to bed. Drink some before bed and it will be there still cold when you wake up in the morning. It is a good reminder to consistently put what your body NEEDS into it.

2. Keep the fridge filled with fresh fruits/veggies. If you need to cut some fruits/veggies up for easy grabbing, DO IT! Isn't that why we automatically reached for pre-packaged food-because it's easy? Pre-package your fruits/veggies and grab those instead. You'll thank yourself as you hit the sack that night.

3. Write down a workout routine as you fall asleep and do it first thing in the morning. Or put a workout DVD in the machine set up to go for the first thing in the morning. Either way, do it first thing in the morning after a bad day-it will prevent it from happening the next day.

4. Have some self-control issues with the junk food? JUST DON'T BUY IT!!! Cookies can be made at home for cheaper, more fun with kids, and healthier. There are tons of recipes out there for a healthier way to make these goodies. (When I get around to it, I'll post some on my RECIPES page!) Chips are another item that NEVER hit my grocery list. I know that I can't stop when I start. Even at a get together or party I avoid at all costs the chip tray. I go for the fruit tray instead.

These simple, easy guidelines will help you back on the bandwagon and stay there for good! Only you know what your weaknesses are. You have to find a way around them and develop self-control.

Seriously, have you seen Lucy Activewear? Only the most comfortable workout wear I've ever tried on. I have a cute peace sign top and lightweight zip jacket I like to wear when golfing in chilly weather. (Makes me feel like I'm a true golfer!) Their bamboo pants are like heaven and you can wear these clothes out without looking schlumpy.

Here's the link to their website.

Sign up for their newsletter. If you have a store near you they have Fitness Fridays on ocassion. I've gone to one and it was fun. They were giving out mini Jamba Juices, had a Stroller Strides class, and a drawing for free Stroller Strides. It's always different. ALSO, they have sent out coupons for free items. I got a two pack of their socks. They are my favorite ever workout socks. These retail for $14 and they gave them away for absolutely FREE. Another freebie was wristbands. I opted out of that one. I don't wear wristbands. Maybe if I was a tennis player I would...

Try them out. I think you'll REALLY like them!

I LOVE reader comments and you help to motivate me, too.
Kasey asked me to do a post on returning to exercise after injury.
Everybody is different and each injury is different.

First of all, you have to take care of the injury with rest, ice, compression, and elevation. (RICE as those in the medical field know it)

Second you have to listen to your body. If it hurts, don't do it. I will always remember my dad for that one.
Once there is no pain or swelling, you have full range of motion, you have almost all your strength back in the injured area (compared to the opposite appendage) you are safe to return to exercise or training.

Third, return slowly! You may feel great and stable, but strength may have been lost and it could take anywhere from a couple of weeks to months to regain the strength that was lost.

Obviously I am no doctor, and so this should be taken as a general guideline. Your doctor will give you more detailed instruction and you should follow Dr. first.

Non-weight bearing exercises such as swimming, biking, water aerobics, and weight training of the non-injured area is a good way to keep up your strength while you are waiting for your body to heal. Again, you should always ask your doctor if it would be appropriate to participate in any of these activities.

Remember to always stretch and do a warm-up of about 5 minutes before starting any exercising to warm up the muscles. This will help prevent injury during exercise.

Revisit your long lost love then and only once a day thereafter. I have to do this every so often. Even though I am just striving to maintain my weight, I know when I've overdone it and need to get back on track...either gain or lose. The scale is helpful in that regard.

That being said, a scale is a good motivator. If you don't like the number, you tend to try to eat healthier and exercise. AND that being said, the scale is not a good indicator of your overall health. Muscle really does weigh more than fat. As you gain muscle you will see the scale go up, but soon you will see the pant size decrease because muscle also is more compact and takes up less room than fat.

Do strength training at least 3 times a week to get that lean muscle working for you! Lean muscle, even when you are at rest, burns calories. Fat just sits there. Nobody likes that idea! We want our bodies to continue to keep working for us, even when we are at rest.
Take time each day to focus on breathing and clearing your mind. If you are like me and have kids begging for your attention every second of the day, this time can be hard to find. Focus on deep breathing and letting all of your "to do lists" running through your head rest for a few minutes.

Notice how your body relaxes and when you are done with this meditation/deep breathing you will feel invigorated to tackle that "to do list" with a renewed energy.

This practice is good for mind, body, and spirit. All 3 working together for the benefit of you and it only take a few minutes each day. Your ability to focus will become sharper. Decreasing stress will help to increase your metabolism. Right when you get out of bed, early in the afternoon, or just before bed are great times to practice relaxation.

GOAL: TAKE A FEW MINUTES TODAY TO PRACTICE DEEP BREATHING. IN FACT, WHAT ARE YOU STILL SITTING HERE FOR? GO DEEP BREATH, RELAX, AND MEDITAE.

Here's the deal: go to Bountiful Baskets and sign up for a basket and maybe a few other offerings that look yummy and pay for it. Saturday morning at your designated time and place pick up your basket full of fruit and veggies. (Take you own basket/box with you.)

The catch and the fun part of this is that you never know what you are going to get. The great part is you know that it is handpicked and you are getting the best of the best.

The states that participate (you need to check if they are in your particular area, too) as of right now are: Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Nevada, Idaho Washington, and Texas.

The bread that is offered is super fantastic and freezes/thaws well.

This amount of fruits and veggies is supposed to last a family of 4 for two weeks. It works out to about that, but some of the food you will either need to freeze or eat fast. That's a great way to get those fruits/veggies in.

The price is very reasonable: first basket $18 and every basket after that $15. If you add on bread, or other offerings like peaches, strawberries, etc. the price will go up. This is for A LOT of fruits/veggies. If you are unsure of it, share with a friend, neighbor, or family member for your first basket.

GOAL: EAT THOSE FRUITS AND VEGGIES...ALL WEEK, EVERYDAY!!!

The articles link above is chalk full of wonderful ways to get your recommended amount of fruits and vegetables each day. The article contains a chart with the recommendation based on age. For my age I need 2.5 cups of vegetables and 2 cups of fruit per day.

I think I do pretty well when they defined one piece of fruit as 1 cup. I eat 1-2 bananas a day and sometimes an apple on top of that. Strawberries and grapes are a plenty at our house and are "eat what you want when you want" type of deal. It's great because the girls reach into the fridge, pull out the grapes they want and eat away. It makes an easy side to lunch/dinner/and a great snack.

In the veggie area I try to have at least 1/2 a cup with each dinner, cut up cucumber at lunch to eat, add green peppers to dinner or cut up zucchini. Last night I grilled up some zucchini and enjoyed about a cup of that. I eat celery with PB for snack and add lettuce to sandwiches or make a little salad to go with dinner or lunch.

Visit a Farmer's Market or your local produce store that you love and buy what you eat in a week so nothing goes bad. Cut it up, wash it, store it properly and you will find that getting your fruits and vegetables in everyday can be a breeze. It is definitely a way of life and takes some time to get in the habit of it.

An example of my routine: Every Wednesday is double ad day at Sprouts. It's a great day to go to get last weeks deals and the new deals. I can load up my cart with a head of lettus or two, cucumbers, zucchini, bananas, grapes, oranges, strawberries, and whatever else I think we will need for a full week for a family of 4. When I get home I immediately wash everything and store it properly so it lasts. Sometimes I freeze it in small portions to pull out when needed. (Strawberries for smoothies is a good example of this. I go to a different produce store when time permits and buy 3 lbs. of strawberries for $1. I freeze 2 lbs. and the family eats the other lb. in the next few days.) Celery is washed, cut, and stored in a container for easy snacks and chopping for dinners. Grapes are taken off the stems, washed, and stored in an open zip-lock bag. Lettuce/spinach is washed, spun/dried, and stored wrapped in paper towels in an open ziplock bag to keep it crisp.

GOAL: GET IN YOUR RECOMMENDED AMOUNT OF FRUITS AND VEGGIES EACH DAY. NOTICE HOW GREAT YOU FEEL ABOUT YOURSELF WHEN YOU DO THIS.

Make an allowance in your daily calorie intake for a little treat. 160 calories will give you 6 hershey kisses or 1/2 cup of Dreyer's Grand Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream. (fitnessmagazine.com)

Also, if you are on Twitter you can tweet to Connie Diekman, R.D. and director of nutrition at Washington University in St. Louis. She will send you healthy alternatives. THAT'S a COOL tip!

Find something else to do. Take a walk around the block, drink water, grab a piece of fruit.

Finally, swimsuit season is upon us. Picture yourself in a swimsuit or find a picture of yourself and remind yourself quickly of what you want more. Healthy, FIT body OR the candy?

GOAL: Practice your self-control and get your sweet tooth under control.

Breakfast smoothies will be a perfect start to your day. Some smoothies can be upwards of 400 calories. That's way too much.
Here's the anatomy of a smoothie (thanks to fitnessmagazine.com March 2010) to help you decide how to construct your smoothie goodness.

BASE
1 cup low-fat milk (118) calories
1 cup chopped or frozen fruit (53-84 calories)

GOOD STUFF
1/2 cup sherbet (107 calories)
1/2 cup plain low-fat frozen yogurt (110 calories)
1 tablespoon honey (64 calories)

EXTRAS
1 to 2 scoops soy or whey protein powder (120 to 240 calories)
2 tablespoons peanut butter (188 calories)

These are for 20 oz. smoothies. Mix and match your smoothie for different variations, but stay within 250 calories for good breakfast in the morning.

Try to get small portions throughout the day of protein instead of one hefty chicken breast at dinner. All you need is 2-4 oz. of chicken per food sitting. Excess of lean protein can lead to that dreaded belly flab we either are staving off or are working off. Yogurt is a great source of protein. Eat yogurt as part of your morning breakfast. I will sometimes have a yogurt between lunch and dinner or a little before bedtime if I'm needing something.

Portion control is essential in reducing calorie intake and getting the right amount of nutrients instead of too many. Depending on your body you need roughly 30 grams of protein each day. Visualize either your fist or a deck of cards and make your portions of meat that size for the entire day. Divide the chicken up into lunch and dinner or chicken and salmon. Once your plate is clean, you are done. Take the plate directly to the table, do not pass GO!

This morning I was up bright and early. I'm working really hard on getting my 7-8 hours of sleep in each night. It feels great to get just the right amount of sleep. Being on a regular schedule is so great for your body. It helps with your metabolism and can speed it up. Drinking 2-3 liters a day helps with that as well. My aim is for 2 liters now, and I'm getting there. (Bathroom stops are every 1/2 hour, feels like being pregnant all over again!)

I didn't just wake up early. I woke up, put on those workout clothes. Grabbed my Yoga mat, headed to my backyard, and enjoyed the perfect morning. I ran 10 laps around our yard (it's a good size yard), then I did walking lunges and a back leg lift on the way up. I did this across our lawn and back again. I didn't count, I just made it to the other side of the yard. If you have seen my yard, you know how long it is! I did 2 sets of 30 jumping jack, did LOTS of ab work. Did some butt work. 3 sets of 10 pushups and LOTS of water.

What a way to start the day.

GOAL: GET 7-8 HOURS OF SLEEP EVERY NIGHT AND GO TO SLEEP AND GET UP AT THE SAME TIME EVERYDAY. YOUR ENERGY LEVEL WILL INCREASE. THIS IS ONE ASPECT OF INCREASING YOUR METABOLISM.

CHALLENGE: You will NOT regret, EVER, getting a good workout in. You WILL regret NOT getting a workout in. Write this down and post it on your mirror so you see it every morning.

You can watch the video below. When he showed this to me last night I thought I was going to wake up the entire neighborhood with how loud and hard I was laughing. So here's your calorie burn for the day!

WARNING: I am NOT liable for any accident that may occur from falling off of your chair or accidents related to messes or any other thing that might happen in your uncontrollable state. Watch and you'll see.

Thoughts about the video: notice the "dr." is not mentioned by name, she is wearing a leotard to do FACE exercises!, and I think she really does believe in her face workout. I don't know HOW in the world she got through making the video, I barely got through watching it!

Now that you've watched the absolute funniest thing EVER... (why have I never seen this on America's Funniest Videos?) GO DO SOME REAL EXERCISES!

P.S. Thanks Brody for the great ab workout I got watching this...the lady's face kept coming in my head all day and I would just start busting up thinking about it!

My husband and I were talking last night and he told me, "I just feel like I'm falling apart physically. They say when you reach 30 things seem to go downhill. They're not kidding. I thought it would be gradual, not like a bus hit you!" (I added some of those words myself, but that is basically what he told me.) In response I said, "Well I turn 30 this year, I hope that doesn't happen to me!"

The truth is, I don't think it will happen to me because I do pay careful attention to my diet and exercise. I make sure to FIT both of those things in on a daily basis. It is a lifestyle for me and I'm living that life I want to live.

On this Giveaway website they are offering a 12-Week program from Live the Life.
Live the Life has a free trial offer for 1 week. Click here to sign up.
I am not recommending every diet site I can find. I do not believe in diet pills or anything that suggests losing an extreme amount of weight in a day or week. (Have you read about any of that stuff here? Didn't think so, because it DOESN'T WORK!)
I am for eating healthy and exercising. That is the one true way to lose weight, get FIT, and have the energy you want to have. Off the soapbox...

Live the Life will give you a menu for the day and an exercise routine for the day. I am not advocating signing up for the full 12-week program, but try it out for a week. See the difference and pay attention to the way you feel. I've watched the videos they put out and I agree with their 7 ways to increase metabolism.

You can enter the giveaway to try for a 12 week program and sign up for the free 7-day program.
Who knows, you might be hooked on eating healthy and exercising.
Looking and feeling great is not a quick thing, it takes time, but it does happen!
