Uncharted 3 developer Naughty Dog has a new game. It’s called The Last of Us – a genre defining experience” for PS3 with survival and horror elements thrown in. Plot details had been thin on the ground up to now, so Naughty Dog, the good folk they are, have finally spilt the proverbial beans on a plot that sounds more buddy-survival picture than the zombie shooter many predicted.

The Last of Us is the latest project from one of the most respected developers in gaming, following its last title – Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. The Last of Us was originally teased in a trailer showing characters Joel – a man in his 40s, and 17-year old Ellie protecting themselves from a zombie ambush. Thanks to game director Bruce Stanley and creative director Neil Druckmann, we’re now a little wiser.

Naughty Dog reveals new game called The Last of Us

The Last of Us takes place 20 years after a virus outbreak decimated the population. With no sign of hope, and little left, survivors struggle together in military-safe zones. Tensions are high, and ill-disciplined survivors are routinely executed. Those that test positive for the virus are put put of their misery.

Events see Joel attempting to smuggle the young Ellie out of the city, for reasons Naughty Dog isn’t revealing just yet. Just as well, as she’s landed herself in trouble. And we know what happens to troublemakers. Naturally it all goes wrong, and they are both caught outside and in danger, left to survive against the nasties lurking outside.

We reckon the story sounds like it has more in common with Enslaved Odyssey to the West another game in which you play escort to a former hostage, than your typical zombie blaster. What we do know is that a follow-up sequel is unlikely, Druckmann said in a clip on GameInformer.

“We can say now we don’t want to end on a cliffhanger. We don’t like when games do that. It has to be all encompassing,” he added. “If it does well and people want more then we’ll discuss it.”

Exciting stuff. We can’t wait to hear more. Who else is looking forward to this one?

LG Optimus Vu: odd-shaped handset teased

LG has been teasing us with a most peculiar-looking handset. It’s called the LG Optimus Vu, and has a rather unique shape. It appears that rather than go widescreen, LG has opted for a near square 4:3 screen for its powerful new phone, set to compete with larger screened phones and the smallest tablets. Who says you need to follow trends, eh? Here’s what else we know so far.

We know that the LG Optimus has a 5-inch display and a powerful 1.5GHz processor, an 8-megapixel camera, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. Great specs there, let down only by its outdated Android 2.3 operating system – not the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich soon to hit future Android phones.

LG Miracle Windows Phone with NFC exposed

The most unusual bit about this handset is the LG Optimus Vu’s 4:3 ratio screen, lending the Optimus Vu a square shape that, while not entirely suited to viewing films on, should be great for viewing webpages. However it’s likely that the LG Optimus is more of a rival to other large-screen functional handsets such as the Samsung Galaxy Note and smaller-sized tablets such as the Dell Streak than, lets say sexier handsets such as the forthcoming Samsung Galaxy S 3.

It is also believed that the LG Optimus Vu will be one of many new handsets this year carrying NFC technology, letting owners share date between handsets simply by touching them together. Given that LG’s new ‘Miracle’ and LG Prada 3.0 phone will feature the technology, this looks a given.

However, we’re still scratching our heads over that 4:3 screen. Would anyone buy a smartphone that isn’t widescreen these days? Let us know what you think.

LG Prada phone 3.0 to turn heads in February

PS Vita owners in-waiting! Ahead of the February 22nd UK launch, Vodafone has finally revealed its 3G price plan. And as if to tempt gaming fans further, Vodafone is throwing in a free copy of WipEout 2048 into the bargain.

For £279, customers will receive a 3G Vodafone PS Vita and a free 4GB memory card. Of course, that 3G SIM will need to be topped up. Do so and Vodafone will chuck in a free copy of WipEout 2048 – saving you £25 from buying the racing game yourself.

PS Vita can be used to control PS Vita launch games

WipEout 2048 is just one of the many games that form an impressive launch line-up that also features Uncharted: Golden Abyss – the first of the highly-rated Uncharted series to launch on a handheld console.

That marks the Vodafone 3G deal as a bargain in our books. Elsewhere you can pick up a 3G PS Vita for £280, or a Wi-Fi-only version for around £230. But hunt around and you’re sure to find a deal just as sweet.

Online store Amazon is just one of a number of stores stocking tempting PS Vita 3G offers. There you can grab a 3G or Wi-Fi PS Vita and get a free 8GB memory card and selected game for just £15. So if you’re after more memory for your moolah, that just might be the way to go. But do look around.

PS Vita launch games include: Uncharted: Golden Abyss, WipEout 2048, ModNation Racers: Road Trip, Everybody’s Golf, Motorstorm RC, and more. Which games and PS Vita model are you going for?

PS Vita launch line-up confirmed!

Motorola Motoluxe 8MP Android UK launch imminent

Eager to get out of the traps ahead of MWC this month, Motorola has officially unveiled the Motorola Motoluxe – a mid-entry Android smartphone with an 8-megapixel camera. Just one of a furry of handsets already announced this month, the Motorola Motoluxe is heading to the UK in around a month’s time.

Looking more functional than sexy from early photos, the Motorola Motoluxe teams its 9.8mm thin profile with a giant 4-inch display to tempt anyone planning to enjoy movies on their future phone purchase.

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx: Top 5 things you need to know

In terms of operating system, we’re not exactly talking the latest tech here. The Motorola Motoluxe will come running Android 2.3 Gingerbread alongside Motorola’s own MotoSwitch user interface – not the Ice Cream Sandwich operating system we’ll be seeing on the most high end Android smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S 3.

Around the back the Motorola Motoluxe comes packing am 8-megapixel rear mounted camera, and a VGA camera on the front. An 800MHz processor and 300MB of internal storage (expandable via microSD card) round up the main features.

While not at the highest end of the scale, we imagine the Motorola Motoluxe will have a lot going for it as a mid-level Android phone designed to compete with the growing number of Android phones out there. Among them the recently – announced Samsung Galaxy S Advance – another mid-entry Android with HD video skills and slightly faster 1GHz processor.

Official pricing has yet to be confirmed, but we do know that the Motorola Motoluxe will land on British soil later this month. Anybody looking for their first Android phone? Let us know your phone-buying plans in the comments below.

Playstation Vita Review

Firstly, the Vita is a slick looking device, it feels great to hold and unlike its competitor, actually has some good games come launch.

But its biggest hurdle? Your phone. Yep, the iPhone, Android handsets and all number of other smartphones have become gaming phenomenon’s pretty much overnight, and have left both Nintendo and Sony clinging onto their share of the handheld market. So, whereas Nintendo’s response was to make effectively a ‘gimmick’ that no phone can yet offer. Sony have gone down the route of making a ‘luxury’ portable gaming device that goes for pure grunt power, rather than a casual gamers device. But has this tactic paid off?
Well, sadly only time has the answer to that question. But, personally as a passive hardcore gamer I hope so, as I think it would be a sad day when Sony stop producing handheld consoles and accompanying games.

<!<del>-IMAGE</del>->

But what does the Vita actually do that your phone or original PSP doesn’t? Well it might look remarkably similar to the original, but under the hood it offers an un-paralleled portable gaming experience. Firstly it has a much improved, larger and now crystal clear OLED touch screen – that just looks gorgeous, two analogue sticks (thank god!), front and rear camera, a gyroscope/accelerometer and a rear touch pad for extra touch interactivity with certain games. All of the new features really do make it feel like the best of iOS gaming with amazing graphics and gameplay that we know and love from the PS3. And that really is no exaggeration, the graphical grunt that is kicked out from this machine is stunning, especially from the likes of Uncharted Golden Abyss. You do have remind yourself occasionally that you’re not sat in-front of your lounge TV controlling Nathan Drake – no you’re on a train to Birmingham and everyone’s looking at you thinking – ‘how did that chump get a Vita two months early’? Well everyone, not much longer to wait now.

And thankfully come launch there are twenty-five titles, which showcase all of it’s glory from its graphical grunt to touch screen innovativeness – including Uncharted, Wipeout and Everybody’s Golf being just some of the highlights.

Overall, I think Sony always knew they were in with a fight to stay keeping a good chunk of the handheld market. And bless them, they’ve done what they do best – produced some AAA titles, new innovative ways to play and kept their key demographic happy and hungry for more.
The only question is will people be willing to spend £220 on it? Well there’s only one person that can answer that question, and that’s you. My advice would be – if you can afford it, and love the idea of ‘proper’ games on the go – Do it.

Keep your eyes peeled for more in depth reviews of Vita titles over the coming weeks.

Last week a survey discovered that attitudes to relationships vary among users of different breeds of smartphone. Blackberry users, for example, are more likely to have experienced love at first sight. Apple iPhone owners are more likely to hook up with a work colleague. We asked what does your smartphone choice say about you. Here’s what you’ve said so far.

To discover which smartphones The Gadget Show Online readers own, we popped the question. We found that you use a wide spread of Android, iOS and Windows Phone devices.

Love is in the air for mobile users: what your smartphone says about you

Most who got back to us use an Apple iPhone. That means you’re more likely to indulge in a little office romance behind the water cooler. You’re also eager to call back just one day after a date, you lovestruck iPhone users, you. Are there any readers out there currently in an office relationship? Let us know.

IPhone 4 user Eric Tyson says that his iPhone 4 makes people want to approach him. Does your smartphone attract the opposite sex?

As for you Android users – you’re more likely to take things further wink, wink on the first date. BlackBerry users. We’re still waiting to hear from you. Have you discovered love at first sight? We still want to know hear from you.

Windows users. Do your relationship habits mimic your favourite operating system? Do you yearn for a change from the old in your love life just as you do your tech? Nokia users. Are you dependable types that would never leave a date waiting?

We want the comments to keep on coming. So let us know. Which smartphone do you use? And whether your choice says anything at all about you.

The Olympus OM-D-E-M5 is Olympus’ latest micro four thirds camera, primed to hit the shops in April. Inspired by classic camera design, the Olympus OM-D-E-M5 has a retro feel to it and some brilliant specs for serious photography fans.

As smartphone cameras continue to get better, catching up with compact cameras, micro four thirds snappers such as this Olympus OM-D-E-M5 prove that smartphones still have a long way to go to match the features found on the better models.

Sony outs stylish Cyber Shot trio

The Olympus OM-D-E-M5 boasts a 16-megapixel camera with a live MOS sensor, a super fast autofocus and the ability to capture images at 9.2 frames per second in burst mode. Action shots should be a cinch with the Olympus OM-D-E-M5.

Olympus’ latest will also shoot full HD videos in 1080p, which you can preview on the 2-inch tilting OLED tilting screen. Quick dial adjustment lets you set aperture and shutter speed in an instant.

Five axis image stabilisation helps to eliminate some of the vertical and horizontal rolling that creates shot blur. The idea is that you could take photos and record video while walking without said blur ruining your handiwork.

If retro-looking cameras with a modern twist are your thing, then check out the eye-catching Pentax K-01 as designed by Marc Newson at the link below.

Microsoft has confirmed that new Star Wars game Kinect Star Wars and a limited edition R2-D2 Xbox 360, complete with authentic sounds from the film will be released in the UK on April 3rd. Read on to find whether these truly are the droids you’re looking for.

The double dose of Star Wars goodness will go on sale as a bundle or individually for £39.99 and £349.99 respectively. Kinect Star Wars the game was originally announced at E3 2011.

Max Payne 3 delayed till May: Pre-order deadline extended

Players are able to control characters from the Star Wars universe using nothing but their body and voice.
The special edition R2-D2 Xbox 360 320GB bundle is something else. It comes dressed up exactly like its on-screen counterpart, complete with custom sounds, a shiny gold C-3PO controller and a white Microsoft Kinect unit. Also in the bundle is a copy of Kinect Star Wars, an Xbox 360 wired headset and one month of Xbox Live Gold membership.

The console bundle also features an unlockable ‘Galactic Dance Off’ mode, where players can actually dance to Star Wars tunes from the films. Did anyone see that coming? The Xbox 360 Star Wars Kinect console is currently available to pre-order over on Amazon, so do keep an eye out, Star Wars fans.

This very special collectors bundle isn’t the only special edition we can’t wait to get our hands on. Rockstar Games recently revealed a Max Payne 3 collectors edition, complete with a model of the game’s iconic protagonist. And not forgetting the Ninja Gaiden 3 Collector’s Edition featuring a soundtrack from the game, figurine and and art book, also available to pre-order from Amazon right now.

An image of a new LG phone reported to be named the LG Miracle has surfaced, revealing a mid-entry Windows Phone to compete with Android and iOS devices. Rumoured specifications of the LG Miracle have also surfaced, showing the LG Miracle to have NFC technology, a decent processor and HD video recording.

The LG Miracle was first spotted in leaked photos last December. Back then the name of the device was known the ‘Fantasy’. A name change later and we have the LG Miracle, and with leaked specs revealing the LG Miracle to have a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and a 4-inch NOVA display, Pocketnow reports.

Nokia Lumia 800 white edition out this March

NOVA displays promise to be better and brighter than some of the Super AMOLED displays we’re now seeing on the latest Android phones such as the forthcoming Samsung Galaxy S Advance and even the Samsung Galaxy S3.

For storage we’re talking 8GB of built-in space for photos, movies, music and apps. Other leaked features include HSPA connectivity, front-facing VGA camera, and a five-megapixel rear camera capable of 720p HD shooting.

The LG Miracle is also being reported to feature an NFC chip that would let the LG Miracle exchange and share information with another NFC-enabled phone by tapping the two devices together.

NFC technology is still in its early days, currently being adopted by more manufacturers in the hope that we will use the technology more often as an alternative to Bluetooth sharing, and paying for small goods at shops by touching our phones on a sensor, sending a payment via a users phone bill.

Availability and a release date have yet to be revealed, but expect to hear more at the upcoming Mobile World Congress convention in Barcelona at the end of this month.

Samsung Galaxy S Advance: mid entry Android with high-end specs
Read LG Miracle Windows Phone with NFC exposed on 5FWD

As 2012 kicks into gear we’re seeing more great games hitting the store shelves. After a slow start gamers are now spoilt for choice. This weekend will see a handful of great titles arrive in shops.

To prevent you picking up a stinker, we’ve picked out the best ones. Read on and we’ll tell you which games to spend your money on.

Catherine

Catherine may be a puzzle game, but don’t let that fool you. It comes with its own devilish side-story of temptation and morals to really make you think, even when not attempting to piece together the game’s extremely challenging levels. Catherine is a thriller, horror and warped love story all in one. Its many endings ensures that, if you want to see them all, you’ll be getting plenty of value for money. Oh, and we recommend playing this one on easy. Trust us.

Kingdoms of Amalur: The Reckoning

Open-world games set in fantasy universes are all the rage these days. Should you need your fix post The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, then Kingdoms of Amalur: The Reckoning should go at least some way to hitting the RPG-shaped hole in your belly, brought to visual life by Spawn creator Todd McFarlane. Even if you don’t like RPG games, Kingdoms of Amalur: The Reckoning’s combat-heavy gameplay makes it worth checking out.

The Darkness 2

Jackie Estacado is back and he wants to gain revenge on those who left him for dead, and stop those from getting hold of the powers that transform him into a tendril-packing killing machine. A new art style and better controls makes The Darkness 2 a sequel worth welcoming with spread arms and an open wallet.

EA Sports Grand Slam Tennis 2

Wimbledon 2012 may seem far off but that hasn’t stopped EA getting in the mood to swing a few racquets in Andy Murray-esque anger. As typical of EA, the emphasis here is on realism. Modes and features include a Become a Champion mode, in which you lead a single player to glory and Legends of Now and Then, where you play with or against 20 of the best ever players. There’s PlayStation Move support, too.

Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition

If you have yet to play Fallout: New Vegas, then you should probably do something about that. Even better, if you’re already a Fallout fan, you may want to check out this special edition. It includes every downloadable content pack for around £25. Bargain.

Did we miss any games that you think should have been on this list? Which games are you buying this weekend?
Read Games out this weekend: Catherine, Kingdoms of Amalur, The Darkness 2 and more on 5FWD

Twisted Metal is one of the oldest PlayStation-exclusive series and it’s soon to make its comeback. Series designer David Jaffe has confirmed that famous car combat and racing game Twisted Metal for PS3 will be available in Europe from March 7th.

The Twisted Metal franchise began its early days on the original PlayStation. Way back in 1995. Only last year, at E3 2011 did we know that the series was to make a comeback. And it’s coming to PS3 for the first time next month.

Forza Motorsport 4 review

Confirmation of the release date came straight from Jaffe himself, in a forum post on the popular NeoGAF gaming forums. Twisted Metal for PS3 was originally scheduled for February 14th, but had to be delayed after Sony asked the developer Eat Sleep Play to tone the violence down slightly.

Twisted Metal for PS3 has been long-awaited, and is sure to be welcomed with open arms at a time when there isn’t another series like it at the moment. In Twisted Metal players fight using cars and the weapons they come armed with.

Now with an online mode, up to 16 players can compete with each other over an internet connection. Or players can take on the story mode in the Twisted Metal contest, fighting it out in the Twisted Metal tournament for the prize of a wish granted by Calypso, ringleader of the tournament. Features confirmed include missiles, miniguns, giant magnets and flying mascot weapons, dozens of vehicles and for the first time, flight, in a helicopter armed with a minigun.

Twisted Metal isn’t the only PS3-exclusive game we’re looking forward to this year. We’re perhaps even more excited by Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us – a survival horror game that promises to be different to the zombie shooters clones currently hogging the consoles, and destined to become one of the year’s best sellers.

Read more about The Last of Us at the link below. Don’t forget to let us know which games you’re looking forward to playing in 2012.

Unlike the world’s big rock stars and musicians, amateurs don’t have an entourage and a hulking tour bus to carry their equipment. DigiTech Harman iStomp will at least go some way to lighten that load, by eliminating the need to carry around a huge pedalboard. It’s a dinky pedal that you plug your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad into to create clever guitar effects.

Check out our gadget reviews!

The iStomp is the world’s first effects pedal that can be programmed with any sound. The beauty of the Harman iStomp is its portability and flexibility. It works with a range of compatible Apple iOS devices, and is programmable by any of them. You simply load up the effects you need in between playing songs to make the Harman iStomp sound exactly as you please.

Purchase a DigiTech Harman iStomp, and you’ll receive what Harman says are its two most popular effects for free: DigiTech Total Recall Delay and the DigiTech Redline Overdrive. For extra effects, users can head to the in-app store.

DigiTech is no stranger to using technology to deliver more opportunities for artists to experiment with their sound. Last year DigiTech also unveiled the world’s first iPad programmable guitar pedal that users could customise by adding their own effects in, just like you can do with the Harman iStomp.

Following the earlier release of the Nokia Lumia 800 in a range of teasing colours, Nokia has once again showed its mettle for good handset design by unveiling the Nokia Lumia 800 white edition. We also have a date and price. The white Nokia Lumia 800 will arrive in shops this March on contracts starting from £20.50 per month.

Like the rest of the Nokia Lumia 800 models in Cyan, Black and Magenta colours, the Nokia Lumia 800 white edition features the same gorgeous polycarbonate build that gives the Nokia Lumia 800 its distinctively smooth and glossy looks that give even the white iPhone 4S a run for its money.

Nokia Lumia 900 UK flavour out this June

And like its fellow counterparts, the Nokia Lumia 800 features the same 3.7-inch AMOLED ClearBlack screen, 16GB of storage space and an additional 25GB of SkyDrive cloud storage and a 1.4GHz processor and an 8-megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss lens.

Meanwhile the Nokia Lumia 900 is another handset from the Lumia range that Nokia fans can look forward to this June. The Nokia Lumia 900 was first unveiled at CES 2012, and can be considered an upgrade of the Nokia Lumia 800.

The Nokia Lumia 900 features a larger 3.7-inch AMOLED ClearBlack display and the same 1.4GHz processor and 8-megapixel camera and HD video recording. Unlike the Nokia Lumia 800, the Nokia Lumia 900 has a front-facing camera for video calls.

It has been recently claimed that a rumoured Nokia Lumia 910 will have a 12-megapixel camera, which has since been denied by Nokia’s imaging supremo Damian Dinning. So, all that’s left to do is decide: Nokia Lumia 900, or that beautiful white Nokia Lumia 800?

A new year is always time for predictions, so here’s another: you’ll not play another game like Catherine all year. Catherine is a horror-puzzler-cum-thriller for PS3 and Xbox 360 that rarely fails to draw you in, as Stephen Ebert discovers.

<!<del>-IMAGE</del>->

Catherine finally hits the shops next month, looking destined for cult hit status, blurring the line between horror and puzzle genres. You play as 32-year-old software engineer Vincent Brooks. He has a girlfriend, Katherine, who becomes pregnant, and hints of marriage. The idea of commitment scares Vincent to bits, but not nearly as much as the awful nightmares he’s been having. Even worse – he’s just found out that others in his town have been dying in their sleep. Beneath the story is a neat, although not exactly revolutionary stone-shifting brainteaser.

The good

It’s when Vincent falls asleep that gameplay begins, in levels made up of building blocks that you must push, pull and then climb to help Vincent escape his nightmares. A countdown timer leaves little time to spare. This is puzzling at its most frantic and nail-biting, calling for cool heads.

In the race against time a rewind button lends you more time to stress about your next move. Gameplay is easy to grasp, but that doesn’t make things any easier. Seriously, we had to play on easy mode (stop sniggering at the back). Finally clearing them grants you a strange sense of accomplishment and relief. And then it’s back again into Vincent’s crazy world.

Vincent’s story is riveting, and you won’t want to skip it. There is something about Vincent’s downtrodden personality and sense of victimisation that makes following his story so intriguing. Mini games within this world force players to answer questions that will change the course of the game. There are eight different endings, warped by the choices you make. The witty script will at least ensure you enjoyed the journey towards them.

The bad

Catherine is still just a puzzle game, where all you do is push blocks. There are plenty of games like this out there, Catherine just make it look both sexy and scary, yet you’ll still want to play on just to see how it all ends.

The bottom line

Fun, mind-numbing, and absorbing. Catherine is a freaky puzzler with an interesting story attached, and gameplay that’ll leave you tearing your hair out. If you’re a glutton for punishment, you’ll feel all the better for it. However, despite all its dressing up, Catherine is still just an overelaborate puzzle game – a sometimes annoying girlfriend that you can neither live with, or without. But if you’ve got the patience, this is one short-term love affair worth hanging onto.
Read Catherine review on 5FWD

Apple’s iPad 2 was revealed on March 2 2011, so if the company follows suit with the follow-up we should be seeing the iPad 3 very soon indeed. With that in mind, what are we hoping to see from the next slab of Apple loveliness?

The iPad 2 has sold like the proverbial hotcakes over the past year, even though (as seems to have been forgotten) it was seen by many as a bit of a modest overhaul of the original device. We’ve been told that the iPad 3 could be the one to watch. Here’s what we might be getting…

HD screen

The main reason some people were a bit miffed with the iPad 2 (though we love ours to bits) isn’t because of a misplaced sense of entitlement or the curious need to diss Apple at every turn. Oh no. It was because the screen was absolutely identical to the original iPad’s.

That won’t cut the mustard for a third year running, which is why we’re expecting Apple to provide a major screen overhaul. We’re talking an HD display with double the resolution of the previous models, which should provide a picture that’s almost as sharp as the iPhone 4S.

Quad-core processor

Dual-core mobile processors are so 2011, darling. This year will see the emergence of quad-core smartphones and tablets, and the iPad 3 will almost definitely be at the forefront of that progression.

All reports are suggesting that the next Apple tablet will feature a new A6 chip with double the processor cores of the iPad 2. Considering how powerful last year’s model is, that’s quite a prospect – we’re approaching laptop speeds here.

Slightly bulkier body

For all its internal changes and that shiny new screen, we’re not actually expecting the iPad 3 to change all the much on the outside. Indeed, there have been rumours that a real working iPad 3 was out on the floor of CES last month, but that no one noticed because it was so similar to the iPad 2.

Regardless of the truth of that tantalising claim, it has been suggested that the only difference in the iPad 3’s design will be a slightly thicker body. Well, with a high def screen and a souped up camera to squeeze in, what did you expect?

iPhone 4S-standard camera

The iPad 2 introduced a camera to the Apple tablet range, but in truth it was only really any good at shooting videos – and even then it wasn’t the sort of thing that could replace your camcorder. The iPad 3 should change all that.

We’re expecting the iPad 3 camera to be very similar to the iPhone 4S’s – which means it’ll be one of the best 8-megapixel smart device cameras around. We could also get an HD front-facing camera in a bid to sharpen up FaceTime performance.

Siri

Apple’s voice-operated assistant, Siri, was the star of the iPhone 4S show. For the first time, voice recognition actually seems to have a practical use on a mobile device, such is Siri’s knack for understanding what you want and offering a shortcut to it.

Not only would it be logical for Apple to include its smart new tool with the iPad 3, there have also been mentions of Siri on iPad spotted in a beta version of the next iOS, 5.1.
Read Apple iPad 3 is coming: Here’s what you might be getting on 5FWD

Street Fighter X Tekken will for the first time bring together characters from two of the best fighting franchises on Xbox 360 and PS3 next month. We’re now looking forward to its arrival even more, after four more characters were leaked ahead of their official reveal. Tekken’s Jin and Ogre will be joined by Street Fighter’s M. Bison and Akuma.

The four Street Fighter X Tekken characters first appeared on a Taiwanese gaming site, that had posted images of the characters, along with instructions on how to perform their signature special moves.

Street Fighter X Tekken: 5 things you need to know

The images were soon taken down, however the guys from fighting game fansite Shoryuken managed to get hold of the images themselves, publishing them for Street Fighter X Tekken fans to gaze at and get excited for the year’s most-anticipated fighting game.

Although it has to be said, the reveal of M.Bison is hardly a surprise, given his appearance in pretty much every Street Fighter game. The same goes for Akuma. But it’s always good to know that both Street Fighter stalwarts are finally confirmed.

Street Fighter X Tekken is one of many fighting games vying for attention in 2012 alongside the likes of SoulCalibur V and the forthcoming Dead or Alive 5. Street Fighter X Tekken will, for the first time let Tekken and Street Fighter characters duke it out in the same game.

Unlike the Xbox version of Street Fighter X Tekken, the PS3 edition includes exclusive characters: Cole, Mega Man, Kuro and Toro. A handheld version will also release on the PS Vita, going toe-to-toe with rival fighting game Ultimate Vs. Capcom 3.

Window Phone users, great news! Vimeo has finally released an app just for you, available for free on the Windows Marketplace. It’s no stripped down version, either – letting you do all the HD video uploading, browsing and sharing that you would on the desktop site. Read on to learn more about what the YouTube alternative can do on Windows Phone…

As the Windows Marketplace continues to grow, boosted by new Windows Phone launches such as the Nokia Lumia 900, users of Windows Phones can expect plenty more great apps like this Vimeo app.

Nokia Lumua 900 UK bound this June

The official Vimeo app looks to have all the necessary tools to to even stave users off the desktop version by integrating with existing accounts. From a Windows Phone, Vimeo users are able to upload HD video, browse others, search for the latest clips, and check how many eyes have seen their latest mobile masterpiece.

The usual caboodle of social features are included. Users can like, comment on videos and queue some for later viewing. And yes, of course you’ll be able to share yours and others videos via Facebook, Twitter, email or SMS straight from the app. Design-wise, the Vimeo app takes its cue from official Windows Phone apps, in that menus are easy to navigate.

It seems there’s been a lot going on at Vimeo. The video-sharing site has also been revealing its latest desktop site overhaul, introducing improved ways to view video and de-cluttering on-screen settings. Users can upload more than one file at a time, while the Inbox now doubles up as your your news feed, saving you the time from flitting between both.

You can read all about those changes in our ‘Top 5 things you need to know about the new look Vimeo’ link below. Will you be downloading Vimeo for Windows Phone? Which phone will you be using?

PS3 PSN changing to Sony Entertainment Network ahead of PS Vita launch

Ahead of the PlayStation Vita launch (PS Vita), Sony has announced that all PlayStation Network accounts will soon be known as Sony Entertainment Network (SEN) accounts. It is, says Sony part of its plans to integrate gaming under the same banner as the rest of its entertainment and media. But what does this mean for you?

The name change, thankfully is a straight-up rebranding. “This transition is based on Sony’s goal to enhance its unique digital entertainment offering. As a series of these activities Sony started last September, PlayStation Network will be aligned with Sony Entertainment Network,” Sony revealed in an email to PSN subscribers.

5 games that make the PlayStat

“This helps us get closer to our goal of establishing a global comprehensive network platform of services across games, movies, music and more, all accessible from one convenient account.”

With the many entertainment services already on the PS3, the move would appear to make sense. Current services include BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and LOVEFiLM. The move to rebrand the PSN network as Sony Entertainment Network comes just over two weeks ahead of the PS Vita’s 22 February launch.

The PS Vita is also able to play music and movies on a smaller scale, and is also billed as an entertainment device. The name change will be introduced with next PS3 and PS Vita software update on 8th February. So don’t be surprised to switch on either console and find that your PSN account is mission. It has just had a name change. That’s all.

Buying a PS Vita? Then don’t forget to check out our ‘Top 5 games that make the Sony PlayStation Vita worth buying’ guide. Sony’s new handheld has a strong launch line-up featuring the much-hyped Uncharted: Golden Abyss and WipEout 2048.

More forthcoming games include LittleBigPlanet, Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3 and Street Fighter X Tekken, as Sony does battle the Nintendo 3DS and smartphones such as the Apple iPhone 4S for gaming. Have you pre-ordered a PS Vita? Let us know.

Sony ‘Xperia Sola’ trademarked by Sony, but what is it?

Ahead of Mobile World Congress the name of a new Sony handset called the ‘Xperia Sola’ may have been inadvertently revealed, after a trademark for the name was spotted. Going by the name ‘Xperia’ we already know that the Xperia Sola is a new handset. Could it be the Sony Ericsson ST25i Kumquat we’ve been hearing about?

The ‘Xperia Sola’ trademark was spotted on the United States Patent and Trademark Office , credited to Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB, traceable to Sony Ericsson’s Swedish base. So it’s fairly obvious that the ‘Xperia Sola’ trademark is the real deal.

Check out our gadget reviews!

Of course the handset, were that to be its name would be called the Sony Xperia Sola, as opposed to the Sony Ericsson Xperia Sola, following Sony’s purchase Ericsson to manufacture phones under the Sony label.

But we still don’t know what the Sony Xperia Sola actually is. One possibility is that it’s the new name of the Sony Ericsson ST25i Kumquat, leaked in pictures last month. Said phone is a thin and stylish handset with an unusual white bar at the bottom that houses the antenna.

The Sony Ericsson ST25i Kumquat also had a 3.5-inch display with a 480×854 resolution and a powerful 1.5GHz processor. A 5-megapixel camera and 720p high definition camera would complete the core features.

However, it is too early to say what the Sony ‘Xperia Sola’ is. Mobile World Congress takes place next month, so we may hear then. In the meantime keep an eye out for any announcements, as we get closer to find out whether the Sony Xperia Sola really is the Kumquat, or a new phone altogether.

PS3 Call of Duty players, rejoice! The latest Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 maps for Premium Members will go live on the PlayStation Network on 28th February, just over a month after Xbox 360 players received them.

The content drop will include two new maps, called Liberation & Piazza will deliver long and short-range combat gameplay for multiplayer Call of Duty fans playing on a PS3 console.

A PS3 announcement for the new maps has been a long time coming, so it’s good to know that we at least have a date for their arrival. So, why the wait? Well, a deal with Microsoft means that Xbox 360 owners currently get first dibs on the new map pack content that Activision hopes will kick the multiplayer pants off rival Battlefield 3.

Check out our gadget reviews!

The Liberation & Piazza maps coming to PS3 on 28th February were originally released to Xbox 360 owners on 24th January. So that’s little more than a month until new maps arrived on PS3. That should give you some idea of how long the next set of maps will appear on PS3 after having arrived on Xbox 360.

As for the maps. Liberation is set in a militarised Central Park in New York City featuring an open landscape suited to long-range sniper action. Mounted turrets on either end tear through any player daring (or foolish) enough to take control of them.

Piazza takes place in an idyllic seaside town littered with blind corners to peep from, and twisting pathways where a firefight could blow up at every turn in a map geared for close-quarter combat. That’ll mean getting out the mini assault rifles and shotguns out, then.

For a heads-up on when the next Call of Duty Elite content will appear, keep an eye on the Call of Duty Content Calendar. Although right now, the months are filled with ‘coming soon‘ messages, so it’s one worth bookmarking.

PS3 players may have to wait till the end of the month to play, but what about you Xbox 360 fans. What do you think of the new maps? Too busy playing Battlefield 3 to notice?

The Pentax K-01 is perhaps the most daring-looking camera in the Pentax range. It’s a mirrorless snapper crafted lovingly by famous designer Marc Newson, with charming retro looks and features such to rival more expensive competition from the likes of Sony, Nikon and Olympus. Read on to find out why you need the Pentax K-01 in your life.

Most cameras are hardly the most desirable-looking gadgets around – placing functionality over design. The mirrorless Pentax K-01 can go some way to changing that perception – it’s gorgeous.

The body of the Pentax K-01 is crafted from aluminium and coated in a yellow exterior sure to get itself noticed. It’s looks are the brainchild of London-based designer Marc Newson, who we’ll say has done wonders here.

Samsung NX200 i-Function camera goes old school

In terms of features, we’re talking a fully interchangeable lens. Like all mirrorless cameras, the Pentax K-01 promises to deliver DSLR-like quality photos in a small body, not much larger than compact cameras.

There’s also a 16-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and full high definition 1080p video recording at 30 frames per second. A six frames per burst photo mode should make light work of shooting fast-moving objects. An ISO range between 100-25600 means that the Pentax K-01 will also perform well in all lighting conditions. Anti-shake technology, 3-inch (fabulous looking) LCD screen and a pop-up flash lend extra functionality and add to the retro look.

The Pentax K-01goes on sale at the end of March for around £630 for the body, or £680 with either an 18-55mm or 40mm lens kit- driving the Pentax K-01’s pricing into midrange territory when comparing to other DSLR cameras, but with arguably more practicality due to its near-compact size.

Does the Pentax K-01 sound good enough to tempt you from your DSLR? Let us know in the comments section below.

A promotional video starring Windows Phone product manager Joe Belfiore has leaked onto the web, revealing everything you need to know about Windows Phone 8 – the operating system destined for future Windows Phone handsets, designed to rival Apple iPhone and Android phones. Read on for all you need to know about Windows 8 and what it spells for the competition.

The promotional video, which found its way into the hands of Pocketnow was recorded in mind with being shown behind closed doors to Nokia employees only. However, its emergence on the web has revealed to us all a host of new Windows Phone 8 (dubbed Apollo) features we may soon see on such new phones, such as the forthcoming ‘rumoured’ 12-megapixel camera-packing Nokia Lumia 910.

Nokia Lumia 910 to arrive in May qith a 12-megapixel camera

Among the new Windows Phone 8 features is the prospect of more powerful Windows Phone devices. We’re talking support for fast multi-core processors and higher screen resolutions to go with the bigger-sized phone screens that we’re seeing more of these days, capable of playing the latest films and games, and making them look good.

Near Field Communication (NFC) will play a big part, as future Windows Phone 8 phones strive to push forward new technologies letting users pay for small goods using their mobile phone instead of physical cash, with currency tied to a person’s mobile phone bill.

More apps, too. Microsoft expects many more thousands of apps to appear in the Windows Phone Marketplace if it is to compete at all with the popular Apple App Store and Android Market.

Having to manually sync music files with different devices may also be a thing of the past, using ActiveSync. Belfiore gave the example of ones music collection being available on a Windows Phone handset instantly without needing to sync to the PC, where it was purchased.

Other features of note will be support for removable SD card storage – a feature recently missing from the Nokia Lumia 800 – the flagship Nokia phone – and the first in Nokia’s history to feature the Windows Phone operating system. This means that potentially all future Windows Phones will have more storage than any of the current iPhone models, which lack SD card support.

The new features and plans for Windows Phone 8 sound promising to all gadget fans. Microsoft is expected to reveal more on the future of Windows Phone 8 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month.

We can’t wait to hear more but what do you think, does Microsoft have the smartphone chops to really go up against Android and iOS? Let us know what you think in the Comments below.

Love in the air for mobile users: what does your smartphone say about you?

When it comes to owning a smartphone, we all have our preferences, be it Android phones, Windows phones, iOS or otherwise. What does your choice say about you though?

We all have our reasons for our choices, but what does your smartphone say about you, or your attitude to love, romance and relationships? Here are a few interesting findings.

Did you know, according to a Match.com survey, that Android phone users are most likely to dabble in online dating. Up to 72 per cent have visited online dating sites, while 58 per cent of iPhone users and 50 per cent of BlackBerry owners have done so, too.

iPhone 5 camera to pack groundbreaking focus technology

And BlackBerry owners are clearly lovestruck hopefuls – 67 per cent revealed that they’ve experienced love at first sight. They are also more likely to drink on a date, too, so make of that what you will.

And those looking for office romance? Your best best bet is to seek out iPhone owners, who are most likely to date someone from the same workplace. They are eager, too: only waiting just a day to make contact after a date.

Which brand of smartphone do you own? Do you share the views of your fellow smartphone users? Maybe you’re a BlackBerry owner that has been struck by Cupid’s arrow on site? Let us know in the comments section below.

With the possibility of EA’s forthcoming Mass Effect 3 coming to mobile phones, we cannot help but get excited at the thought of Commander Shepard giving it large on the small screen.

The beauty of today’s smarter smartphones is the ability to play some of our favourite console games on devices we can fit in our pockets. Games like Mass Effect 3.

Mass Effect 3 hits the shops on 9th March 2012, confirmed for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. An EA spokesperson has now hinted of a “handheld/mobile” port, suggesting we could see Mass Effect 3 on iOS and Android devices.

Check out our gadget reviews!

The EA rep did not specifically mention any devices by name, instead choosing to tell games site Kotaku that launches of handheld and mobile products tied into Mass Effect 3 appear to be pretty much nailed on:

“There will be “handheld/mobile” products tied to Mass Effect 3, as noted in our past few earnings announcements. They are part of the Galaxy at War system. We will have more details to share soon.”

It is not an official confirmation by any means, and Kotaku has been unable to confirm the name of the confidential source, so take the above with a pinch of salt, however a title as high anticipated as Mass Effect 3 is likely to sell plenty, should it receive some smartphone love.

Shooting games on mobile phones never really quite manage to replicate that console feeling. Aiming down the crosshairs on a mobile phone just feels unnatural. Maybe if your iPhone or Android device looked like a gun, that would solve it, right?

Metal Compass believe so. The company has unveiled its Xappr gun attachment that you dock your phone onto for simulating that pew-pew-pew shooty action feeling.

Top 5 console games to buy in February 2012

The Metal Compass Xappr (you see what they did there?) lets players play a number of augmented reality, and shooting games for iOS and Android handsets in a rather unconventional way, by transforming your smartphone into a gun.

The illusion is one of actually firing at enemies in your surroundings in a way smartphones just cannot simulate without hacking a toy gun in an act of inevitably botched DIY. The Metal Compass Xappr will also be available in a Micro-Xappr variety, soon to be revealed and put on show at the Nuremberg Toy Fair, Germany between February 1st and February 6th.

Both Xappr guns will launch this Spring, and are available to pre-order right now from the Xappr website.

While some camera-makers are keen to show off the latest in modern-styled tech, Samsung is handing over the reigns of modern design to add a retro twist to some of its own shooter range.

The Samsung NX200 looks like something from a bygone era, but look a little closer and it has some great specs and DSLR quality for a relatively compact size.

To cut to the chase on those specs, the Samsung NX200 has a whopping 20.3 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor – you can be sure of some top quality photography here.

Panasonic Lumix ZS20 is world’s thinnest 20x zoom camera

And for video fans and hobbyist, even professional filmmakers, the Samsung NX200 also shoots full high definition footage, which these days is a must-have feature on any top camera.

Around the back is a 3-inch AMOLED VGA display, helpful for previewing photos and video clips. The Samsung NX200 will also feature an i-Function lens. Pushing a button on the lens automatically adjusts the settings you require to shoot certain scenes.

The Samsung NX200 has already been confirmed for a Germany launch this March for 849 Euros, although we’re sure we will see the camera arrive in the UK at some point, hopefully not much longer after.

New Ford B-Max unveiled

Ford has revealed the production version of the Ford B-Max, which was initially unveiled at 2011’s Geneva Motor Show.

The road-ready version will make its debut at this year’s show and promises to wow crowds with its unique B-Pillarless design and impressive technical features.

The B-Max is a Ford Fiesta-sized SUV with two sliding doors in the rear and two regular doors up front. It’s able to lose its B-Pillars thanks to the use of trick materials, which give the car enough rigidity to keep it from becoming wobbly on the move and the roof from caving in. Thanks to its pillarless structure it’ll have a wider door aperture than its competitors from Citroen and Vauxhall.

The B-Max will come with Ford’s new 1.0-litre three cylinder EcoBoost engine. As well as the 125bhp, 58.9mpg engine, the B-Max will come with a variety of Duratorq diesels.

Stephen Odell, chairman and CEO of Ford of Europe, commented: “The B-MAX combines an exciting, innovative design with features that only previously have been found in bigger cars… It’s a brand new car that responds to the needs of an increasing number of customers who want much more from their small cars”.

The B-Max will go on sale in September.

Read New Ford B-Max unveiled on 5FWD

Euro NCAP reveals safest cars of 2011

Safety organisation Euro NCAP has revealed the safest vehicles it tested in 2011.

53 cars were tested in 2011, each falling into one of five categories. There are a number of tests to evaluate the safety of a car – tests like frontal impact, car to car side impact, child protection, pedestrian are inflicted on the vehicles. Naturally, the more secure/solid the car is the higher it scores.

The safest cars in their respective categories are:
Small off-road 4×4 category: Audi Q3
Supermini category: Chevrolet Aveo
Small Family category: Ford Focus
Small MPV category: Mercedes B Class
Large Family category: Volvo V60

Euro NCAP also honoured Ford, Volvo and Mercedes for their innovations in safety tech over the last year.

The gongs for Volvo and Mercedes were awarded for their Autonomous Emergency Braking systems – tech that stops drivers from hitting other cars or pedestrians.

Euro NCAP Secretary General, Dr Michiel van Ratingen, commented: "With Euro NCAP Advanced, we have already recognized a number of technologies offering safety benefits to consumers. The safety case for AEB systems is very strong and we are therefore strongly encouraging manufacturers to increase the availability of such systems on new cars. We are well underway to add the assessment of these systems to the overall rating and to make these systems a requirement for five stars in the future."

The evaluation process is set to get harder over the coming years to put newer, more safety conscious cars to the test.

Read Euro NCAP reveals safest cars of 2011 on 5FWD

When it comes to gaming, the beginning of the year may not have been the most blockbuster-filled, but starting this month, that all looks set to change, with some corking games poised to hit the shelves and setting the scene for another great year of gaming.

With that playful thought in mind, and a new month ahead of us, we’ve picked out our five favourite, and your most most anticipated, games for February 2012. Need help deciding what to buy? Then read on…

Final Fantasy XIII-2

The latest game in the Final Fantasy series is a sequel to Final Fantasy XIII, revealing more behind the original Final Fantasy XIII story. Thankfully you won’t need to own the original to enjoy the events here. New features include multiple pathways, time travel, an enhanced battle system and over 150 monsters to battle.

Soul Calibur 5

The series returns after a four-year hiatus. Other fighting games have since come and gone, so it’s good to see Soul Calibur come back, and on phenomenal form. New characters, new Critical Edge combos, faster gameplay and online multiplayer makes Soul Calibur 5 a must for fans of the series, and all beat-em-up fans.

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection

The Metal Gear Solid series feature some of the finest storytelling and action gameplay from the series that helped revolutionise open-world gaming. Now you can enjoy Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker in HD on your PS3 or Xbox 360.

The Darkness 2

A graphical revamp, tighter controls and new ways to take revenge on your opponents makes The Darkness 2 one to watch this month. Early plays suggest a better campaign than its predecessor. We will have a full review soon, until then we’re keeping an eye on this one.

UFC 3

This month, we’re back in the famous Octagon for the latest in this brutal fighting series. UFC Undisputed 3 adds new submission moves and ways to finish the fight, better, more realistic, sometimes eye wince-inducing graphics and personalised fight entrances to help players rub it in.

The game you’re looking forward to the most not made the list? No worries, let us know what it is in the Comments below with why you think it’s a winner!
Read Top 5 console games to buy February 2012 on 5FWD

Those looking forward to Activision’s open-world game Prototype 2, now have more reasons than ever to get their wallets warmed up! Those who pre-order the Prototype 2 Radnet Edition will receive a generous 55 pieces of additional content at no extra cost. How good does that sound? Read on to find out more about the Prototype 2 Radnet Edition pre-order deal

The extra content, available through a one-time use code available in the Prototype 2 Radnet Edition bix will unlock the masses of free content that Acivision says will provide hours more worth of gameplay.

The new content takes the form of new in-game events, challenges, avatar items, dynamic themes and behind-the-scenes videos from developer Radical Entertainment on the making of Prototype 2.

The Darkness 2: 5 reasons it will be amazing

The new goodies will appear in weekly drops: giving players time to enjoy each new piece of content before moving onto the next batch. Thankfully, all Radnet bonus content takes place outside of the main story – so those not planning on picking up the pack will not miss out on anything story-wise from the campaign. The Prototype 2 Radnet Edition, says Activision, is simply a way to reward fans with new gameplay.

Prototype 2 is a direct follow-up of the 2009 version, where protagonist Sergeant James Heller is the new mutated and infected human turned deadly shape-shifting weapon wreaking havoc in a virus-stricken New York City. Prototype 2 arrives in stores on 24th April on PS3 and PS3.

The PC version has been delayed until July 24th, a posting on the official Prototype 2 Facebook page yesterday confirmed.

Sky TV has revealed plans to launch a new internet TV service letting even those who do not subscribe to any of Sky’s many packages watch shows at any time. Users will be able to watch the shows from any device from the computer to the smartphone.

If all that sounds familiar, that’s because it sounds like the current Sky Go service, however the new service will be quite different, and more flexible.

Should you wish to watch a one-off show or film for the evening, you’ll be able to pay for it upfront by renting it, doing away with the need to purchase a full month’s subscription – so you’re not tied up to any long deals or costly contracts.

Netflix launches in UK and Ireland

The current Sky Go service already allows Sky shows to be viewed on a range of gadgets, however, Sky Go is restricted to paying Sky subscribers, so Sky will be hoping that the new service introduces new customers to its plethora of services.

Sky already offers an impressive selection of films and U.S dramas. The announcement seems to fit in more with films and drama, possibly leaving football – one of Sky’s main draws untouched, but there’s no doubting that quick and cheap one-off payments for big football events such as UEFA Champions League games would be very popular.

We look forward to hearing more about what the new Sky TV service has to offer in the coming months. More as soon as we get it.

Netflix: No plans to offer game rentals

A few months ago Netflix revealed plans to spin its DVD mailing service off into a service called Qwikster. Back then it was suggested that as part of this new service, gaming fans would be able to rent the latest games.

That however will not be the case, Netflix has confirmed. The film streaming company will instead focus on bringing more quality films to its service until some promising deals kick in.

Confirmation came at the end of an earnings call for the company, in which Netflix CEO Reed Hastings revealed that Netflix has “no plans” to offer video games as part of any of its services.

LOVEFiLM signs up ABC TV to bring the best of U.S shows UK

Video game rentals had already been announced as part of the Qwikster spinoff company – its posters even featured an Xbox 360 controller – so that may comes as a disappointment to some.

However, Netflix plans to bring in some hot new film franchises to its service, including some of the latest Disney films, with plans to bring in the likes of The Adventures of Tin Tin from film studio Paramount.
BlackBerry 10 'London' touchscreen phone spotted in wild

The next generation of Blackberry phones will look and feel like no BlackBerry before. For an idea of just how different the new BlackBerry smartphones will be, take a look at that image above.

What you see is the BlackBerry London – a new BlackBerry 10 handset that looks like it has more in common with the BlackBerry PlayBook in design than more familiar BlackBerry handsets, such as the BlackBerry Bold.

Top 5 smartphone launches

The image, posted on CrackBerry.com is said to be a leaked slide featuring some details about what looks like being called the BlackBerry London. According to the slide, the BlackBerry London will deliver a change in identity and user-experience to the BlackBerry phone range, and be a powerful phone capable of making the most of top quality apps.

Little else was detailed on the slide, but we can see that the BlackBerry London will have a front-facing camera (as well as a rear camera), and no physical buttons on the front, opting for what looks like a large touchscreen.

BlackBerry phone-maker RIM is tipped to be thinking about injecting the BlackBerry London with a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, with a view to launching the device late this year at the earliest.

Of course, more on the BlackBerry London when we hear it. BlackBerry users – what are your early thoughts?

This means that news of the five-door SEAT Mii is not far away.

Engines on offer will remain the same in the five-door as the three-door model. Two are initially on offer, either a 60bhp or 75bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. Later a 68.9mpg and 96g/km Green tec variant will launch.

The Citigo will launch in mid-2012.

Read Geneva show debut for five-door Skoda Citigo on 5FWD

The vent on its nose is awfully similar to the Viper GTS’ of old.

Ahead of the new Viper’s proper reveal at the New York Motor Show in April a scant few details are known. The new car will have traction control thanks to US Federal law and may have a naturally aspirated 8.7-litre V10 engine with 600bhp and 560lb ft.

Read Facebook reveal for new Dodge Viper on 5FWD

The original Darkness game did alright. It was a good game with some solid shooting gameplay, packed with a few gruesome scares thrown in for good measure. However, the sequel – The Darkness 2 is even better.

We will have a full review soon, but in the meantime, check out these five reasons why The Darkness 2 could be worth picking up for your PS3, PC or Xbox next month.

Improved controls

We’ve spent a good couple of hours with The Darkness 2, and are pleased to report that the gameplay controls feel much firmer, and just more accurate this time round, especially when dual-wielding pistols or using protagonist Jackie Estacado’s tentacles to inflict pain on enemies.

A new look cell-shaded

The cell-shaded look won’t please all fans, but we think it looks great, adding a more vibrant look to some scenes, while retaining the grim mood and feel of the original game.

Vendettas co-op mode for up to four players

The Darkness 2 has a co-op mode where up to four players can play, in a story that runs alongside that of the main single player campaign and featuring four characters, each with their own peculiar talents abilities, leaving players to decide which is their favourite.

Upgradeable abilities

Throughout The Darkness 2, players will have the chance to upgrade Jackie’s abilities by collecting currency to purchase new talents and improve those he already possesses. Gun Channeling, for example provides unlimited ammunition and increased gun damage – a lethal, winning combination. Meanwhile, a power called Black Hole lets Jackie send enemies whizzing through the air in a deadly rip through the atmosphere.

A blazing array of weapons

One of the things we most love about The Darkness 2 is the ability to dual-wield firearms, and mix and match firepower with Jackie’s demonic powers. Handguns, submachine guns, shot guns and all manner of assault rifles to blast enemies away at a distance. The chance to mix things up, weapon-wise lends more variety to popping a cap, or a few hundred into those daring to oppose Jackie Estacado.
Read The Darkness 2: Top 5 reasons it will be amazing! on 5FWD

Ahead of what could be a very exciting Nintendo Wii U launch at the end of the year, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has hinted that Nintendo will, in future make more downloadable content available for its games, starting with the likes of Super Mario 3D Land for Nintendo 3DS.

In a talk last week, the Nintendo boss said that such a move would encourage fans to talk about its games more, by regularly injecting new content and DLC – something we could see with future Nintendo games.

Super Mario 3D Land review

“We anticipate that Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 will bring in a substantial profit in the next fiscal year and the year after that.
“On the other hand, we will be able to do various things in the field of digital business. Up until now, once consumers who had bought a game got tired of it, they would never play it and it would never draw public attention again,” Iwata said.

A solution, he said, would be to provide new content to deliver more replay value to games such as Super Mario 3D Land. “What if we could provide add-on content through the network? As I referred to before, for example, this is the idea of supplying new stages to Super Mario users who want to play the game more but have completed the game and lost interest in the existing stages.”

Up to now Nintendo has not sold DLC for its titles post-launch. A move towards doing so would fit in perfectly with the Nintendo’s plans for its forthcoming Nintendo Network, which Nintendo promised will deliver the kind of digital content and entertainment not yet seen on a Nintendo console.

Would you pay for more Super Mario 3D Land levels? Let us know your thoughts in the Comments below.

So it’s a surprise to see Samsung officially already launch the Samsung Galaxy S Advance.

The latest in the growing line of Samsung Galaxy smartphones packs in an impressive array of specs in a mid-entry Android smartphone that still screams out high-end goodness.

Samsung Galaxy S3 rumours: Five things you need to know

For a start, a 1GHz dual-core processor is not too shabby at all. Browsing the web, those pages should load up pretty quickly. You won’t find the latest Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system – the Samsung Galaxy S Advance has Android 2.3 Gingerbread on board.

The screen is a 4-inch Super AMOLED display with, for those that like to keep count, a 400×800p resolution. The rear camera is a 5-megapixel offering capable of recording high definition 720p-rated video. A front-facing 1.2-megapixel camera takes care of video calls, should you wish to make any.

A release date has not been announced, but it is thought that Samsung will be showing off the Samsung Galaxy S Advance at MWC 2012 before it arrives in stores in the following weeks.

Soul Calibur 5 for PS3 and Xbox 360 feels like an old friend we love to welcome with open arms. Back after a long four years, but never forgotten, the Soul Calibur series is just as fun, frantic and exciting as it has ever been. New characters, new moves and better free-flowing combat make Soul Calibur 5 worth the wait for fans, says Stephen Ebert

<!<del>-IMAGE</del>->

The Soul Calibur games have been around for 13 years. In that time the series has collected millions of fans. Four of those years have been spent waiting for Soul Calibur 5. The good news is that all the free-flowing action that Soul Calibur has been famous for remains, and that despite a few minor, and some major tweaks, Soul Calibur 5 may well be the best in the series.

The good

Soul Calibur fans can welcome a number of new faces replacing some old ones. Z.W.E.I is almost literally a beast of a fighter, able to call upon mystical werewolf powers to chain combos. His moves look tricky, thankfully he’s easy to get to grips with. Viola is another that uses magic, this time in the form of a projectile crystal ball to keep her enemies at a distance.

Xiba replaces the departed Kilik. He too has a staff that can be used to ward off enemies and if you’re lucky, knock opponents out of the ring for an easy win. The new characters are headlined by guest fighter Ezio Auditore from Assassin’s Creed. His combination of lethal close-quarter combat and projectiles could see him become a firm favourite, and is a perfect fit for the series. A number of the old guard remain: Voldo, Cervantes, Ivy, Yoshimitsu, Maxi and Nightmare, and others still remain in an impressive character roster, and a handful more, unlockable as you progress through the game.

One of the biggest changes is the introduction of new Critical Edge combos that have something more familiar with the Street Fighter series than we’ve yet to see in a Soul Calibur game. Only once a gauge is filled can these moves be activated at will, taking up to a third of the opponents energy bar, and giving them little chance to protect themselves – making fights more dramatic, giving more players the chance to even things up during contests. It sets the scene for the combat that remains as free-flowing as ever. If anything, Soul Calibur is quicker than ever, with approachable, yet taxing to master combat as deep as the player wishes it to be. From novice to expert players – there is plenty to keep the fight fan satisfied, including online play giving players the chance to challenge those across the globe by region. Online play, from our experience is smooth, with very few signs of lag.

The bad

A dragging story mode is the only real blot on an otherwise excellent fighting game. The story mode sees players take on the role of a fighter names Patroklos, out to rescue his sister, and take on the sources of evil surrounding the Soul Calibur sword. The story is actually well told, but it lacks in enough variety to make it entertaining or worth going back to.

The bottom line

Soul Calibur 5 marks a welcome return for one of gamings best fighting series, and one we’re glad to have back. Publisher Namco Bandai rings in the changes, while staying true to what made the series the brilliant fighter it is. For fans, it’s a must.
Read Soul Calibur 5 review on 5FWD

No new Xbox in 2012 says Microsoft

Claims and rumours of there being a new Xbox and PlayStation console announcement in 2012 has seen excitement go through the roof. Xbox fans can now at least tone down their excitement, after Microsoft France revealed that we will not see a new Xbox in 2012.

It was originally rumoured that a new Xbox reveal of sorts would happen at CES 2012, but with that date having come and gone, the rumours turned to E3, which Microsoft France at least has now denied outright.

Check out our gadget reviews!

In an interview with LePoint.Fr Cedrik Delmas, marketing director of Microsoft France said that there is still plenty of life in the Xbox 360, before hinting heavily that we will not see a new console in 2012, let alone at E3 2012, this June.

“Xbox 360′s cycle is not at all finished. The proof is that we don’t see the logic in cutting the price this year. E3 is still premature. What’s certain is that there’ll be nothing new in 2012.”

Nintendo has already confirmed that its new console – the Nintendo Wii U – will be launching at the end of the year. Delmas brushed off the idea of competing with Nintendo with a new console.

“We’re not here to counter Nintendo and they’re not here to fight the other manufacturers. Nintendo has put itself in a different cycle, they’re advancing at their own pace.” So for now at least, it’s looking like the Nintendo Wii U will be the only major new console shown off at E3 2012.

But how long before you think Sony and Microsoft will follow? How long do you think there is left in the current console cycle? Send us your thoughts below.

Panasonic has entered the realm of gadget record-breakers with the Panasonic Lumix ZS20 digital compact camera. Panasonic claims it is the world’s thinnest 20x zoom camera.

The latest in the Lumix range has of course more to offer than model-like proportions: it also has a pretty good feature set that we’re sure many looking for a new camera will want to get their hands on when the Panasonic Lumix ZS20 goes on sale in March.

Check out our gadget reviews!

The Panasonic Lumix range has always proved popular, and the Panasonic Lumix ZS20 will shortly be joining them. The Panasonic Lumix ZS20 features a Leica ultra-wide-angle 24mm lens that extends to 480mm inside a body measuring just 1.1-inches thick.

The sensor inside is a 14-megapixel High Sensitivity MOS sensor. Its image processor delivers burst shooting at 10 frames per second, and capture full high definition video.

Other features and extras include the 3-inch LCD screen around the back, USB charging and built-in GPS mapping. The maps come bundled on a DVD, and can optionally be installed on the Panasonic Lumix ZS20, should you need them.

The Panasonic Lumix ZS20 will arrive in shops in March for around $349.99 (£222) in black, red, white, and silver options.

Pentax Optio VS20 has two shutter buttons
Read Panasonic Lumix ZS20 the world’s thinnest 20x zoom camera on 5FWD

Speeding fines rising to £100

Speeding fines are set to rise from £60 to £100 to fund victim support schemes.

Justice Minister Ken Clarke is poised to raise the fine for being caught speeding £40 to £100. Not only will the rise cover speeding fines, but also for jumping red lights.

The extra cash will go toward victim support schemes to help those who have been on the wrong side of crime.

In 2010 the government reduced the amount of cash it received from speed cameras to aid its argument that it was ending the perceived ‘war on motorists’.

The £60 fine has been in force for the last ten years. While the fine is rising, the three penalty point punishment is not going to change.

Read Speeding fines rising to £100 on 5FWD

Women are better at parking than men

The parkers were then scored out of a possible 20 points. Women managed an average score of 13.4 and men only managed an average 12.3.

2,000 drivers were surveyed about their attitude to parking. Only 25 percent of the men surveyed were particularly bothered about their car’s position in a bay, while women revealed they were more careful about parking in the middle of a space.

It also found that 39 percent of women are more likely to reverse into a space compared to 28 percent of men. Not only that, but women will make more adjustments to their car’s position to make sure everything’s just so.

The survey also found that women take five seconds longer to park their cars than men.

For now at least, the battle of the parking sexes has been won.

Read Women are better at parking than men on 5FWD

A rumoured Samsung Galaxy S3 is doing the rounds on the gadget grapevine, but what is it? The mystery phone is said to be a quad-core Android phone with a 12-megapixel camera due to be announced and revealed as soon as next month.

Samsung has yet confirm anything, but that hasn’t stopped numerous guesses at what the next Samsung Galaxy phone will feature. Here are some of the rumours doing the rounds.

Samsung Galaxy S3

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has been heavily tipped to be a powerful quad-core smartphone that sounds as if it could blow almost every other rival handset out of the water, with guesses suggesting speeds of up to 1.5GHz – great for apps, games, anything.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

This sounds like a given, but we can pretty much assume that any new Samsung Galaxy S2 follow-up will feature the latest Android operating system adding a lot more features and user-intuitiveness, and a nifty face unlock feature, where you unlock your Android phone through the magic of face recognition technology.

It may have a 4.6-inch screen

The Samsung Galaxy S3 will have a whopping good Super AMOLED screen, of that you can be sure. But what size? Reports have gone so far as to suggest that it will be as large as 5-inches, but an upgrade on the Samsung Galaxy S2 of around 4.6-inches sounds more likely.

Camera 12-megapixel

Rumours last week point to a 12-megapixel with an LED or Xenon flash-enabled camera capable of going toe-to-toe with the Nokia N8 for photo supremacy, and 720p high definition video recording.

Samsung Galaxy S3 could launch in April 2012

Infamous gadget insider Eldar Murtazin, who last week claimed to be in possession of a Samsung Galaxy S3 predicted an April 2012 shop date for the Samsung Galaxy S3. Considering his prediction of Nokia partnering up with Microsoft, and recently that a Nokia Lumia 910 will soon hit the shops (which now looks like happening) he’s a man worth taking seriously.
Read Samsung Galaxy S3 rumours: Five things you need to know on 5FWD
