RIM’s on a roll with the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and BlackBerry Torch 9860, and now the BlackBerry Torch 9810 is ready to fill the gap in the middle. Read on to find out everything you need to know about the device.

Slide-out qwerty

Like the BlackBerry Torch 9800 (of which this is a direct descendent), the BlackBerry Torch 9810 features the best bits of RIM’s two types of smartphone – a qwerty keyboard (portrait view, of course) and a full-size touchscreen. How does it cram all this into one compact shell? By storing the qwerty behind the screen and enabling you to slide it out.

3.2-inch touchscreen

As mentioned, on top of that qwerty sits a decently proportioned touchscreen. At 3.2-inches, it’s almost half an inch bigger than the BlackBerry Bold 9900′s, which demonstrates why RIM wanted to work the slider mechanism in. There’s also no sign of the unorthodox SurePress tech that put a number of people off the Storm series.

1.2GHz processor

The BlackBerry Torch 9810 might be the middle child of the new BlackBerry family, but it’s certainly not middle of the road. It features the same 1.2GHz processor as the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and the BlackBerry Torch 9860, which effectively doubles up on the power of previous BB generations.

Adreno 205 GPU

The BlackBerry Torch 9810 has a dedicated Adreno 205 GPU, which will boost performance considerably – particularly when it comes to high def video and 3D games. It’s the same chip that can be found in the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play – the so-called ‘PlayStation phone’, which gives you an idea of its pedigree.

5-megapixel camera

Follow the instructions carefully. Cancelling the update during the download plase will not damage the phone. If you recieve an error then your phone cannot be flashed yet wait until an update is avalible.

This tutorial will show you how to flash your HTC Magic / T Mobile G1 with flash ROMs. Android builds are usually distributed as flash ROMs which you can use to update your phone if you have root access to it. Otherwise, you have to wait for official updates which come out once in a blue moon. You can also install modded ROMs which offer extra features and are optimised for performance. You can create ROM backups of the current state of your phone and restore them whenever you want to. You can also apply flash images from other regions. The main reason why you would want to install flash ROMs is to install the latest Android builds directly from source. Also, if something goes wrong in the flashing process, you can restore it using a previous working build.
To flash your phone with ROMs,
You need to have
1. A HTC Dream / T Mobile G1 with root access
2. HARD SPL (Secondary Program Loader) installed
3. The Flash ROM
You can follow my previous tutorial to know how to root your phone.
First of all, install Hard SPL (Secondary Program Loader) on your phone. It allows you to flash your phone with ROMs.

Connect your phone to your PC and mount it. Copy update.zip to the root of your phone.

Now, switch off your phone. Start it up in recovery mode by holding the Home key and pressing Power. You will now enter recovery mode. Press Alt + L to see the recovery menu.
Now press Alt + S to apply the update from the SD card to the phone. Now just restart your phone and your installation of Hard SPL has completed.
Now, to install new Android builds, you need to download the ROM and then install them.
You can download the ROMs from a number of sources on the internet, I personally prefer Android ROMs on Google Code - http://code.google.com/p/android-roms/downloads/list
Download the ROM image you want. Rename it to update.zip and copy it to the root of your phone's SD card after connecting it to your PC.
Now, switch off your phone. Hold the Home key and pressing Power. You will now enter recovery mode. Press Alt + W to wipe your phone first. This is needed or the device may hang during installation.
Now press Alt + S to apply the update from the SD card to the phone. Now just restart your phone and the new ROM will have been installed.

First remove the battery cover, battery and sim. Two clips hold the front cover in place (circled) so release them.

You should now have the front cover removed. Remove the screws you can see.

Flip the frame from left to right but take note that it is still attached by a ribbon. The release this, flick the black latch (circled) up then pull the metal frame away from the phone.

The circuit board will still be attached at the bottom of the phone so move it to one side slightly to access the ribbon connector from the LCD screen. The connector attaches like a plug and socket. Lift the connector up, away from the phone to unplug it. The LCD screen will now be free.

You should now have the LCD screen removed. Reverse the procedure for reassembly.
