Underlying the question was the false excuse used by regressive directors that a shelter can never be both No Kill AND open admission. This is what I told her:

A No Kill shelter can be public or private, run by a humane society or by a municipal government. While some have claimed that a No Kill shelter can’t have an open admission policy, this is false. A No Kill shelter can be either “limited admission” or “open admission.” And there are plenty of No Kill animal control shelters and thus No Kill communities to prove it.

By contrast, an “open admission” shelter does not have to, and should not, be an open door to the killing of animals. In fact, using the term “open admission” for killing shelters is misleading as they are CLOSED to people who love animals. They are CLOSED to people who might have lost their job or lost their home but do not want their animals to die. They are CLOSED to Good Samaritans who find animals but do not want them killed. They are CLOSED to animal lovers who want to help save lives but will not be silent in the face of needless killing. And so they turn these people and their animals away. It doesn't have to be this way.

America is a nation of animal lovers, and our citizens, as well as the animals they love, deserve a shelter that reflects their compassionate values. We now have a solution to shelter killing and it is not difficult, expensive nor beyond practical means to achieve. No Kill is a humane, sustainable, cost-effective model that works hand in hand with public health and safety, while fulfilling a fiscal responsibility to taxpayers.

For shelters wanting to embrace life, the @[119530458104442:274:No Kill Advocacy Center] has free guides to help them: http://goo.gl/C43MvJ

For those that don't, we have free guides for activists to force them to: http://goo.gl/aSRzWO

Normally under the realignment law a sentence is split 50% in custody and 50% out of custody or 2/3 in and 1/3 out. Pleading him to the maximum of 3 years last month did not guarantee that a full 3 years in custody would be imposed. In fact the probation pre-sentence report recommended 2 years in custody and 1 year stayed with mandatory supervision for that year out of custody, but the judge agreed the crime too cruel, too callous, too vicious and violent. He also cited probation department findings that Meek is at a high risk to re-offend. Meek finally admitted committing the crime explaining that he “believes he had the right to euthanize the dog, just went about it the wrong way".

We are thrilled the court recognized the unusually brutal crime. District Attorney Hillary Bagley reminded the judge that the animal did not fall victim to instant and total submersion since it weighed about 35 to 40 pounds and was weighed down with 25 pounds making the needless suffering and struggling prolonged and unfathomable, reprehensible to anyone. At the end of the hearing, absolute maximum penalty was imposed. We would like to commend Officers Reynaga and Sorrels for putting together a solid case which resulted in this conviction, along with the tenacious D.A. Hillary Bagley and last but certainly not least, Honorable Judge Ben Dividian who treated a crime against an animal as it should be.

PANDA went home with a PAWesome new family today in San Francisco. We know she will be LOVED! #EveryLifeMattersURGENT: LIKE, COMMENT, SHARE My name is PANDA (female) and I was surrendered to Animal Care & Control SAN FRANCISCO after 18 years because my person died. I was sad, scared and confused at first in the shelter. The volunteers have worked with me so now I'm actually quite chatty and vocal. I know you might be thinking I'm 18 but trust me, I've got a lot of spunk in me. The SF ACC vet staff said I was in good health for a senior kitty. My only issue is that I'm BLIND, which is really no big deal as long as I go to a home who understands how to take of me. You're getting the picture, I am not being put up for adoption at SF ACC because I didn't pass their medical standards. SF ACC offered me to Give Me Shelter and they have 72 hours to find a place for me to go or my outcome will be up to SF ACC. You get triple good karma points if you adopt me, plus a super sweet kitty and if you adopt me this weekend I can be part of the Maddie's Pet Adoption event. Can you help a sweet kitty out and give me a home?If you can help PANDA - adopt or foster - please email maria@givemesheltersf.org. Maria will respond to your emails as quickly as possible. Sami landed on Brandon's doorstep with a terrible wound on her flank. He had no idea where to go, so he came to our intervention table where we quickly realized that Sami is one of our former foster kitties! We called her owner, who came right away, and went with Brandon, who is her neighbor, to a local vet where we all chipped in for Sami's stitches and pain pills. She is now safe at home and won't visit the neighbors anymore - unless they come over to visit her. Living indoors is best!

This year, participating groups within selected counties of the San Francisco Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara and San Francisco), Washoe County, NV and Dane County, WI will come together for one goal: To empty the shelters! For each pet adopted, Maddie’s Fund® gives participating shelters from $200 to $2,500. This is Maggie!
Maggie is a Veterinary Clinic Assistant in our spay/neuter clinic. Her job duties include assisting with anesthetizing pets, prepping them for surgery, watching them during recovery, and much more! She has been with us at SNKC for a little over 5 months. Maggie has worked in animal-related positions in the past, and is originally from Nebraska. She loves working at SNKC "because we understand that education is key in solving the pet overpopulation problem, and also understand the importance of withholding judgment and treating all people and animals with compassion."
Thanks for being such an awesome team member, Maggie!

Our goal today is to find security footage that shows Maxx (his original name before we dubbed him Maximilian) somewhere in the shaded area of this map. It's important to find film of Maxx, as it may also show a person of interest with him. The time period we are searching for is between Monday, May 11 at 12 Noon to Thursday, May 14 at 6:00 am. We'd like to review any footage from that area during this time period. If you have footage from the area in the map, please call us - but please - only for the footage and/or tips. This is also our emergency dispatch line, and the Animal Control Officers answering it are dealing with animal emergencies as well. ACC thanks everyone for their support.

We have a new reward flyer with some additional information. We're hoping that perhaps someone saw Maximilian being taken to the location where he was ultimately found. His appearance is quite different before the abuse occurred, and the photo may prompt someone to remember a sighting. To clarify questions about his injuries: when we spoke of older injuries, we were referring to burns and bruises that were one to two days old, and happened after he was stolen and before the majority of the abuse occurred early the morning of May 14. The Friends of Animal Care & Control will be taking care of Maximilian's cremation.
