<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Libraries and Cultural Resources at the University of Calgary invites applications for a 12-month sessional librarian with responsibilities at the rank of Assistant Librarian. The anticipated start date for this position is August 1, 2026. The work location for this position is in the Taylor Family Digital Library on main campus.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Libraries and Cultural Resources (LCR) is a leader in the development of innovative information resources and services locally, nationally, and internationally. In a converged environment, it successfully incorporates the resources and services of libraries, institutional and research archives, rare books and special collections, art galleries, and a university press to provide outstanding support for scholarship, learning and the creation of knowledge. &nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Collections, Content Services, and Research Support, the Cartographic Resources Librarian will provide service delivery in the Spatial and Numeric Data Services Unit, with a focus on maps, air photos, and related data, technologies, and tools. The successful candidate will provide reference, consultation, instruction and research services in these areas, working alongside 1 FTE specialized support staff in GIS, and collaborating with relevant academic staff across LCR as appropriate.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to user-centered service delivery, and will assist in the development and management of geospatial resources and data in support of the research and teaching mission of the University of Calgary. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As an academic staff position, appropriate participation and involvement in teaching, service and scholarship is expected.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Position Responsibilities:</strong></h2>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Provides reference, referral, and consultation services to support the use of cartographic resources, data and tools.&nbsp;</li>



<li>Develops and maintains current knowledge of and trends in cartographic resources, tools and other areas related to this position.&nbsp;</li>



<li>Adapts, develops, and delivers specialized course-based instruction and workshops to students and scholars on topics relating to cartographic resources and data. This will include the design and implementation of appropriate learning resources, and the strategic assessment of instruction and student learning outcomes. &nbsp;</li>



<li>Provides research consultations focusing on cartographic resources and tools.&nbsp;</li>



<li>Supports research grant applications and funded projects as required.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Qualifications/Expertise Required:</strong></h2>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Masters from an American Library Association accredited program in librarianship, or recognized equivalent.&nbsp;</li>



<li>Strong service orientation and experience or training in delivering library instruction.&nbsp;</li>



<li>Interest in implementing new initiatives and in evaluation of current practice.&nbsp;</li>



<li>Aptitude for quickly learning and adopting new technologies related to areas of professional practice.&nbsp;</li>

<li>Participates in collection and scholarly resource development in assigned discipline areas.</li>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Summary:</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is a projected 18 month temporary position, covering for a parental leave. The target start date is the beginning of August.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Assistant Director has primary responsibility for the development and coordination of region-wide programs, services, and promotions. They support rural staff in Palliser Regional Library’s 19 rural branches and are responsible for rural staff training, professional development, and evaluation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Assistant Director works closely with the Executive Director and serves as a member of the Palliser Management Team. This position requires some regular travel around the region and may involve working occasional evenings and weekends.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Duties and Responsibilities:</h2>

<li>Assists the Director in developing and implementing policies, long-range strategicplanning, and operational procedures</li>



<li>Prepares and manages budgets within areas of responsibility

<li>Area Resource Centre and Local Branch programming, materials, and training budgets</li>

<li>Supports grant applications and reporting requirements</li>



<li>Serves on the Palliser management team and contributes to region-wide initiatives</li>

<li>Training Rural Branch Staff

<li>Trains new staff and ensures continuous development for existing staff in the areas of program development &amp; evaluation, community engagement, and digital technologies (website, online databases, Libby, Hoopla, and SILS apps, Canva, etc.)</li>



<li>Organizes the semi-annual Branch Staff Workshop</li>

<li>Programming &amp; Outreach

<li>Oversees planning, implementation, and evaluation of region-wide programming for all ages</li>



<li>Leads community outreach initiatives and cultivates partnerships with organizations, agencies, and local groups</li>



<li>Promotes library services through community presence and outreach activities</li>



<li>Creates and distributes region-wide promotional and informational materials such as Hot New Releases, Literacy Activity Calendars, and informational brochures</li>



<li>Promotes library services through Palliser’s social media pages, manages the Palliser website, and selects merch and promotional items</li>

<li>Collection Development &amp; Management

<li>Selects new books from the Holds Alert List</li>



<li>Manages ARPs for ULS and Overdrive and reviews carts</li>



<li>Evaluates donations sent by branches to HQ for processing</li>



<li>Reviews damaged items for repurchase</li>



<li>Sends weeding lists to the branches</li>



<li>Reviews HQ floating items for weeding or redistribution</li>



<li>Reviews Stranded Holds list for branches</li>



<li>Selects new lendable kits, including book club kits and programming kits</li>



<li>Manages headquarters kit lending policies and procedures</li>

<li>A degree in Library and Information Science, or another related field.</li>



<li>Valid Saskatchewan Class 5 license and clean driving record.</li>

The coordinator will work with children’s services staff, another summer student, and volunteers to provide free and inclusive programming to all library visitors. This position provides invaluable experience in children’s programming, community outreach, and project management within a supportive work environment.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Responsibilities:</strong></p>

<li>Collaborate with Children’s Services staff and volunteers to develop, promote, and deliver fun and educational programming for children aged 4-12 and youth aged 13-17</li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Term:</strong> June 29th &#8211; August 29th, 2026</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Hours: </strong>30 hours per week<br><strong>Compensation:</strong> $17.75/hour</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Drumheller Public Library is seeking an energetic and creative student to help plan, promote and deliver our Summer Reading Program (SRP) designed for children aged 4-12 and youth 13-17 The SRP assistant will work with children’s services staff, the SRP coordinator, and volunteers to provide free and inclusive programming to all library visitors. This position provides invaluable experience in children’s programming and community outreach within a supportive work environment.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Responsibilities:</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Assist the SRP coordinator and the Children’s Services staff and volunteers to develop, promote, and deliver fun and educational programming for children aged 4-12 and<br>youth aged 13-17</li>



<li>Represent the Library at outreach events</li>



<li>Assist other library staff members with essential library tasks and special projects</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Requirements:</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>A commitment to building skills and a passion for fostering literacy, creativity, and a love of learning in children</li>



<li>Experience working with children is preferred</li>



<li>Intermediate computer and social media skills including Microsoft Office and Canva</li>



<li>Strong interpersonal and communication skills</li>



<li>To comply with funding requirements:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Be between 16 and 30 years of age</li>



<li>Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or hold refugee status</li>



<li>Be returning to full-time studies in the fall 2026 semester</li>
</ul>
</li>



<li>A valid class 5 driver’s license is strongly preferred</li>



<li>A criminal record check, vulnerable sector check, and child welfare intervention record check may be required of the successful candidate prior to commencing work</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Working Conditions:</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Lifting, pushing, and pulling library materials and carrying up to a maximum of 12kg</li>



<li>Ability to squat, kneel, bend, and raise arms above shoulders</li>



<li>Standing and walking for extended periods of time</li>



<li>Availability for evening and Saturday shifts</li>
</ul>
